SixthFormRetreat

OnThursday10thOctober,35SixthFormstudentspacked theirbagsandheadeduptotheYouthVillageforwhathas beenoneofourbestandmostpoignantretreatswehave everhadatEnglishMartyrs.ThethemewasTapestry andwelookedathowGodweavesintoandbecomes presentinourlives.Thestudentswereencouragedtonot focusonthepainsofthepastorthestressesofthefuture buttoliveinthepresentmoment.Wediscoveredthe beautyandtheblessingsthatareonoffertouseveryday butbecausesometimeswedonttaketimetostopand reflect,wemissthem.Itwasaperfectmessageforour sixthformstudentswhoareataveryimportantstagein theirlife.Thosewhocameappreciatedthetimeawayand willhavesomememoriesthatwillstickwiththemforever!

ChristmasConcert

TheannualChristmasConcertwilltakeplaceat7.00pmon Tuesday17thDecember2013atStHildasChurch.

Admissionisfreeandallarewelcome.

TheEnglishMartyrsSchoolandSixthFormCollegeproductionthisyearisthefantasticrockmusical JesusChristSuperstar,whichwillrunfromMonday25thtoThursday28thNovember.This appropriatelymarkstheendoftheYearofFaith.Castingtookplaceinthefirstweekoftermand,as always,competitionwasveryhigh.Over100studentsexpressedaninterestinperformingonstage orplayingintheBand.Approximately60studentsfromYear7toYear13werechosenand rehearsalshavebeenunderwaythreenightsaweektolearnthesongsandchoreographyforthis demandingshow.Itpromisestobeoneofthebestyet. Ticketswillbepricedat7.00and4.00forconcessionsandwillbeavailablefromtheschooloffice afterhalfterm.

TheEMSSportsStarshasgotofftoaflyingstartinOctoberwith26ofourpromisingyoungsportsstarsalreadysubmitting successfulapplications.Thetalentedyoungathleteshavealreadybeguntoshowpromiseduringthevigorousinitialfitness testingprocessandwewillhopetodeveloptheircomponentsoffitnessevenfurtherthroughoutthecourseofthe programme.Inordertomaximisetheathletespotentialtheywillbereceiving:IndividualisedPersonalExercisePlans, nutritionaladvicebasedonthedemandsoftheirsport,seminarsonsportpsychologytechniquessuchas:Imagery, RelaxationTechniquesandGoalSettingandadvancedweeklyteamfitnesssessions(pre&postschool)lookingspecificallyat strengthandconditioningactivities.Thebenefitofthisinterventionwillbemeasuredwithregularfitnesstestinginorderto quantifytheirimprovements. WearealsoluckytohavetheexpertiseofMrJSpencewhostartedhiscareerworkingasthestrengthandconditioning coachatNewcastleFCAcademy.Followingthis,hewasthefirstandonlystudenttobeacceptedtoworkaspartofthe strengthandconditioningteamfortheOlympic2012theBritishCyclingTeam.Duringthisplacement,heworkedwithelite athletessuchasSirChrisHoyandVictoriaPendletonhelpingtodevelopthemphysicallythroughtheirtraining. CrossCountry

WetookteamsofboysandgirlsfromYears7 10totheEnglishSchoolsCrossCountryCup. WeweretheonlyschoolfromHartlepoolat theeventandcompetedagainst10other schoolsfromtheTeesValley.Ourteams performedwellwiththeYear7/8boys, finishinginfirstplace.Theywillnowgoonto theregionalroundinNovember.

CongratulationstotheU16GirlsFootballteamwhowonthe5aside towntournament.Thegirlswoneverygameinthe competitionwithoutconcedingagoal,atrulyfantastic achievement!

WelldonetoourYear10Netballplayers whowerecrownedtownchampionsthis month.

NationalSchoolsNetball

CongratulationstotheU14andU16NetballteamswhohaveprogressedtotheRegionalroundoftheNationalSchools Netballtournament.Bothteamsplayedreallywellanddidtheschoolproud.Teamsneededtofinishinthetoptwoto qualify,andtheU14sfoughthardcomingsecondinaverywellattendedagegroup.TheU16squalifiedinfirstplaceand havethereforebeencrownedcountychampions.

MusicisvaluedveryhighlyatEnglishMartyrsandweenjoyarichtraditionofmusicmaking.Thereareopportunitiesto learnamusicalinstrumenthereatEnglishMartyrs.Wecurrentlyhavevacanciesforwoodwindincludingsaxophone, brass,guitaranddrums.MusicExamscanbeanexcellentadditiontoaC.VandareworthUCASpointstoo. Hexham&NewcastleCatholicPartnershipDesignTechnologyShow

OnTuesday15thOctobertheTechnologyDepartmenttookexamplesofworkproducedbystudentsinallareasofDesign TechnologytotheNationalGlassCentreinSunderlandandcreatedaninnovativedisplayofthework.Thedisplayformed partofanexhibitionofworkproducedbystudentsintwelveoftheschoolsintheHexham&NewcastleCatholicPartnership. Agroupofstudentsattendedtheeventtoshowcasetheirwork,manyotherofourstudentswhoseworkwasbeing exhibitedcameuptotheGlassCentrewithparentsandgrandparenttohavealookaroundandshowofftheirtremendous achievements. OurALevelworkwasarealstrengthasproductsweredisplayedfromallthreetechnologysubjectsoffered.Designstaff fromtheUniversityofSunderlandcommentedontheexcellentqualityofourSixthFormwork.Theeveningstartedwitha coupleoftalks,thenpeoplewereinvitedtolookaroundtheexhibition,manypeoplecommentedonthequalityand creativityoftheworkproducedbyEnglishMartyrsstudentsandtookthetimetotalktostaffandstudentsabouttheirwork. Duringtheeveningpeoplewereinvitedtoattendoneoftwoglassblowingdemonstrations.ConnieSullivan(Year11)hada tryatglassblowingherselfandsaidthatitwasamazing! Itwasanextremelywellattended,excitingeveningandthequalityanddiversityoftheworkwasbreathtaking.

Year7tutorgroupswereaskedtolearnasonginaforeign language.GroupsdidsongsinGerman,Polish,sign language,SpanishandRomanian.Thewinninggroupwas 7TM2wholearnedheadshoulderskneesandtoesinPolish! InlanguagelessonsYear7studentscompletedtheir Europeanpassportsandaminispellingbeecompetitionin French.Year8studentsdidaminispellingbeeinGerman andYear9studentsresearchedwhylanguagesare important.

OnFridayafternoon,year7wentto HartlepoolTownHalltoseeaproductionof LeMoulinMagiqueTheMagicWindmill performedbytouringtheatrecompany Thtresansfrontires.Studentsexperienced ahighlyvisual,funandinteractivepiece performedentirelyinFrench. Thestoryrecountedthestoryofwindmillowners JeanPierreandClaudinewhostrugglewithhardshipdueto poorweatherconditions.Thecouplefinallymeetwith prosperityfollowingavisitonenightfromwindandrain,how ever,theyarethenconfrontedwiththegreedoftheirevil landlord.Thestudentsthoroughlyenjoyedtheplaywhich coveredthemesofresilience,generosityandovercominggreed.

Ashasbecomeatradition,32Year10and11studentswentontheHistoryvisitto Londonon3rd4thOctober.Inajampackedcoupleofdays,ourstudentswere abletovisittheChurchillWarcabinets,HardRockCafe,theWestEndTheatreShow 'BillyElliot',andtheLondondungeons.Wealsomanagedtofitalittletimetodo someshoppingatCoventGarden.Allstudentswereacredittotheschoolandtheir families.

OverthepastsevenyearsTheEnglishMartyrsschoolandSixthformCollegestudentshavetakenpartineventsat theschooltoraisemoneyfortheChildreninNeedcharity.Eachyearthetotalamountraisedhasincreasedwithlast yearstotalbeinganamazing3000.

Thisyearisnoexceptionandwewillhavetheusualeventstakingplacesuchasatombola,hotdogstall,cakestall, legwaxing,NintendoWiigamesandastaffcoffeemorning.Anytombolaorrafflegiftswouldbegreatlyappreciated andhelpustokeepraisingsuchamazingamountsofmoney.AnygiftscanbebroughttoMrsLTumiltyinher classroomC1. ThisyeartheannualArtSummerSchoollookedatthetheme:TheBalticandtheBridges. Eachyearweselectyear10studentsfromeachoftheSecondaryschoolsinthetownandbringthemtoEMSforafullweek wheretheytakepartinselectedworkshopsfocusingonPainting,DigitalPainting,Textiles,PhotographyandCeramics. Therewasover50studentscreatingexcitingandinnovativepiecesofworkthroughoutthedepartmentontheweek beginning8thJulytoFriday12thJuly. Theweekwasawonderfulexperienceforallandtheoutcomesofallofthisworkwillbeusedtofurtheradvance courseworkthisyearfortheirGCSEandBTECcourses. OnMondayevening(Oct21st)wewillhaveourannualexhibitioneventintheartgalleryandthevastmajorityofthe studentswillcomewiththeirfamiliesandviewtheworkondisplay.Itwillbeagreateveninganditisalwaysapleasureto seethesmilesonthestudentsandthelookoftheirveryproudparents.
