NEW DELHI: The dates for the important assembly elections in five states were announced by the Election Commission on Friday. The notification was issued by CEC VS Sampath for polls in states - Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Mizoram. Schedule for state elections: Chhattisgarh: Two phases of elections in Chhattisgarh. First phase - Nov 11 and second phase -Nov 19. Madhya Pradesh: Date of polls - Nov 25. Date of notification in MP will be Nov 1. Date of notification - 1 Nov, last date of nomination 8 Nov, Scrutiny of nomination 9 Nov. Rajasthan: Date of polls - Dec 1. Date of notification - Nov 5, last date of notification - Nov 12, Date of scrutiny - Nov 13. Last day for withdrawal of candidature- Nov 16. Delhi: Date of polls - Dec 4. Date of issue of notification - Nov 9, late date of nomination- Nov 16, date for withdrawal of nomination- Nov 18 Mizoram: Date of polls - Dec 4. Madhya Pradesh has 230 Assembly seats, while Chhattisgarh has a 90-member Assembly. The counting of votes for all the states will be on December 8. The total number of polling stations in these five states will be 1,30,000, said Sampath in a press conference. He added that the polling will be conducted with electronic voting machines. The model code of conduct has now come into force with immediate effect in all the five states that will go to polls. About 60,000 security personnel will be deployed in the five states to ensure that the election goes off smoothly and peacefully. CEC V S Sampath also said that the EC will keep a hawk eye on paid news which can take voters for a ride thereby impacting the final result. This will be the first time that the Election Commission will deploy awareness observers to help increase voter turnout. Speaking on Supreme Court's directive on 'None of above' option for the voters, Sampath said that the Election Commission measures were taken to provide the option for voters while adding that publishing of opinion polls banned 48 hours before conclusion of poll.

Also, he added that special protection will be provided to scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and vulnerable groups during polls. Dates for two bye-polls in Surat and Tamil Nadu constituencies were also announced. Bye-elections - Surat (west) and a Tamil Nadu constituency - on December 4. The outcome of the state polls may have a bearing on the upcoming Lok Sabha polls to be held in 2014.
