Exercise 01

Total Hours: 4hrs

Study of Resistors and comparing resistor values using colour codes and Digital multimeter.
Objectives: On completion of this exercise you shall be able to Identify different types of fixed value registers by their appearance. Check the physical condition of fixed resistors. Determine resistance value by colour code. Determine resistance value by using ohmmeter or multimeter. Requirements of Materials/Equipments Assorted type resistors 10 Nos / batch Ohmmeters / Multimeter 01 No / batch Bread Board 10 No / batch PROCEDURE TASK 1: Identify resistors by their appearance and calculate resistor value from color bands . 1. Take resistors from the given lot and compare it s approximate physical appearance with the resistors shown in the chart. Identify type name and record it in table of O&T sheet 2. Repeat step 1 for the remaining given resistors 3. Take a color coded resistor from the given lot and identify the colors of bands starting from one end of the resistor as shown in fig. Record the colors of the bands in table of O&T sheet. 4. Refer colour code table and calculate the nominal, minimum, maximum, value of the resistor. Record values in table of O& T sheet. 5. Repeat steps 1&2 for the remaining color coded resistors and get your work checked by your instructor.

TASK-2:- Measure resistanceof resistor using ohmmeter / multimeter.

1. Checks the physical condition of the given resistors one by one discard the defected resistors. 2. Take a resistor from the assorted lot, find and record its standard ,min and max resistance values in the appropriate group of table in O & T sheet. 3. Scrap the resistor leads using a knife as showing in fig 1to remove the oxide / varnish layers on the leads The oxide / varnish layers behave as insulators. If the leads are not scraped before measuring the resistor values, the meter may show very high resistance instead of the actual resistances of the resistor.

4. Using a cloth or paper , wipe the leads to make than free from moisture, oil etc 5. Repeat steps 2to 4 for the remaining given resistors. 6. Connect prods to the ohmmeter/ multimeter terminals. Set the meter to the suitable resistance range so as to measure the resistance value of group 1 resistors of Table. 7. Short meter prods as shown in fig. Adjust the zero set knob of the meter and carry out resistance zero setting of meter. The position of zero set knobs may be different in your meter.

8. Clip the resistor at Sl. No 1 of the crocodile clips as shown in fig. Do not touch the leads of the resistor while measuring. This will make the meter show you body resistance and not the resistor under measurement.

9. Record the value shown by the meter in the appropriate column of table. 10. Repeat steps 8and 9 for all the resistors. 11. Repeat steps 6to10 for the different groups of resistors recorded in table. Resistance zero setting must be done, every time and measuring range of ohmmeter is changed 12. For the entries made in table for different groups check if the measure value and the calculated value of the resistors are matching. Enter your observation in the last column of the table. 13. Get your work checked by your instructor.
