The large Greek colonization from
VIII-VI c. B.C. led to the creat ion of several
town-colonies situated on the Northern
coast of Aegean Sea: Thassos, Aenos,
Abdera, Maronea, Perinthus, Byzantion
etc. These colonies represented places
of significance which realized the main
commercial activity in the ancient Hel-
lenic world. The intensive contacts of the
already established commercial centers
with the Thracian tribes led to power-
ful rivalry between them for spheres of
economic influence. That rivalry is most
ostensibly manifested in the creation of
commercial centers (emporia) in the inte-
rior ofThrace. In these emporia lived not
only new settlers - Greek, but also local
- Thracian population.
According to the ancient Greek his-
torian Thucydides the process of creation
of emporia by the Greeks begins back at
the end of VIII and VII c. B.C. Such emporia
are known in Asia Minor, Sicily and Mace-
donia. And again Thucydides informs that
during 464 B.C. on the river valley of the
riverStrimon (river Struma) and in Thrace
settled 10,000 Athenian coi Qnizers.

While describing the march of Alexander the Great from Amphipolis
through Rhodope Mountains towards Hemus during the spring of 335, the an-
cient author Arrian informed that at that time in the interior ofThrace the com-
mercial centers (emporia) were already a fact.
The inscription found at the village ofVetren, the area of Pazardzhik town in
ancient Greek was the first and until now the only epigraphic monument which
gave rich information about the settlements created in ancient Thrace - com-
mercial centers. The text of the inscription and the archaeological excavations
performed by the village ofVetren proved the existence of the large commercial
center at that place - 1-moptwv niOTtpoc; (emporion Pistiros). According to the
inscription, in addition to em porion Pistiros in Thrace also other emporia
(market-places), which realized regulated commercial relations with Maroneia,
island ofThassos and the other town-colonies from the Northern Aegean coast.
One of these market-places was situated in the surrounding area of the village
of Krastevich, the municipality of Hissarya.

In 2005 the (lrchaeological museum in the t own of His-
sarya started the investigation of the unknown to the ar-
chaeological sci ence settlement, commercial and cult
center from V - IV B. C. The Thracian settlement stands at
500 m South-East from the village in the area Pamuk Tepe.
It encompasses an area of about 10 000 sq.m. and was
situated on a slightly high terrace with South-Western
exposure. In the Western foot of the terrace runs the river
Pyasachnik.
As a result of the archaeological excavations are re-
vealed the foundations of three buildings. Building "A" dom-
inates in the settlement complex and its walls are preserved to a
height of 0,60 m. From the plan and sizes of the building one can
assume that it had two floors. In the lower part the brickwork was
perform eel by stones soldered with mud and in height it was formed
by sun-dried brick. The building consisted of three parallel rooms, in
which was found varied archaeological material : fragments and han-
dles from bronze vessels, iron points from arrows, large quantity of
fragments from earthenware (amphorae and blackfirn vessels) and
pieces of earthenware - local production, earthen objects with cult
function, weighs for loom, fragmented pitoses.

In one of the: rooms
was found a treasure of sil-
ver Greek coins of low, av-
erage and par value.
With them were made pay..
ments on the iocal and the
external market. The coins
were cut on the island of
Thassos, Kyzik and Neapolis
and were dated to the pe-
riod 525-360 B.C.
Among the archaeofogical finds of great value are the remains of
bronze and iron slag. They are an important indication about develop-
ment of handicraft activity (processing of iron and non-ferrous metals).
From the Eastern side building "A" ended with a penthouse in which were
situated a cult fireplace (eshara) and one working fireplace.

Plan of the_cult complex in the area Sekiz Harman
At about 1 km North-East from the Thracian settlement existed
a cult complex, consisting of a sanctuary and a temple. The complex
is situated on a high hill in the area Sekiz Harman. At this stage of the
studies are established two periods from its <:onstruction.1nitially was
laid the.stone foundation (stylobate) which closed-the area with anal-
most square. form. Above it was probably formed a wooden
tion, covered with tiles. The main archaeological finds found in""that
area are fragments of tiles of various form and decoration. On some ......,'1::.;......._

of them were painted spirals, on others - Gorgon Medusa. The varied
-decoration of the used tiles speaks eloquently about the significance
had that cult building for the ancient inhabitants from the re-
gion. Most probably that place was intended for the priest and on it
were performed different religious rituals.

During the second construction period above the limestone foun-
dations was erected the temple building which from the Western side
ended with stone colonnade and portico. In situ were found three
stone drums from the colonnade. For their preparation was used loose
stone which surface was smoothly processed by means of grinding.
On the surface of one of the drums one can see traces of fluting. The
temple was covered with massive tiles, some of which painted with
red slipware.
The archaeological structures found until now in the area Sekiz
Harman by the village of Krastevich allow scientists to assume that the
cult complex situated at that place was closely connected with the
commercial place in the area Pamuk Tepe. The archaeological finds
document its existence in the time from the end ofV c. B.C. to Ill c. B.C.
The location and the character of the Thracian settlement by the
village of Krastevich, together with the closely situated sanctuary and
temple in the area Sekiz Harman form a united complex which pos-
sesses the characteristic signs of a commercial center qmoptwv (em-
porion).

The internal emporia were most of-
ten created on strategic cross-roads and
also in regions rich in ores and minerals.
They did not have a status of a town and
in them were always built sanctuaries
because according to the beliefs of that
time Gods were called on as guarantees
for the order and respectability of com-
mercial deals. In proximity to the newly-
found emporion at the village of Kraste-
vich are found the ore deposits by the
towns of Panagyurishte and Koprivsh-
titsa, but to the North of it passed an
ancient road which through the massif
of Sredna Gora Mountain lead to the de-
posits of non-ferrous metals in the field
of Zlatitsa-Pirdop.
The Thracian emporion at the vil-
lage of Krastevich stands at about 50 km
North-West from emporion Pistiros which
in the pre-Roman Thrace realized the
most intensive commercial exchange of
goods and raw-materials with the towns
from the Northern Aegean coast. To the
East from it there existed a land thor-
oughfare which through the Thracian
cult complex at the village of Starosel
reached the Thracian settlement at to-
day's town of Hissarya and from there it
set off for the large Thracian commercial
center from VI-IV c. B.C. at the village of
Vassil Levski, region of Karlovo town.
