HRD Ministry Announced to Launch 50 DTH Educational Channels
The HRD Ministry announced that it will launch 50 DTH educational channels soon. All these channels
will be different from the existing programmes on air including Gyan Darshan as new one will be more
interactive. All these channels will air programmes which will be live and not pre recorded.
IAF celebrates Air Force Day on 8th October
The Indian Air Force is celebrating its 81st anniversary on 8th October 2013. It has shown its full range of
modern aerial capabilities to mark the day at a grand parade at Air Force Station, Hindon in Ghaziabad.
Empowered Committee on Cinematograph Act Submitted Report to Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting
The Empowered Committee headed by Mukul Mudgal, retired Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High
Court submitted its report on 9th October 2013 to Information and Broadcasting Minister, Government
of India. The committee was appointed (on 4th February 2013) to examine issues of certification under
the Cinematograph Act, 1952 and give recommendations.
Pranab Mukherjee Conferred the Presidential Awards for Classical Tamil
The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Presidential Awards for Classical Tamil 2009-10
and 2010-11 to scholars on 9th October 2013. The Tolkappiyar Award for lifetime achievement to Dr.
Iravatham Mahadevan for 2009-10 and Prof. Tamizhannal Periakaruppan for 2010-11. The Kural Pitam
Award was awarded to Dr. Jaroslav Vacek for 2009-10 and Dr. John Ralston Marr for 2010-11.
S. R. Bansal Took the Charge as the Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank
S. R. Bansal took the charge as the Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank. Prior to
assuming the position of Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank he was Executive
Director of Punjab National Bank.
Government proposed to set up Plastic Parks
The Government of India on 9th October 2013 proposed to support setting up of Plastic Parks for the
promotion of downstream plastic processing industries. The Scheme is aimed at increasing investment
in the sector for additions in capacity and for increased exports in the sector. Adopting a clustered
development approach, the scheme aims to achieve environmentally sustainable growth through
innovative methods of waste management, recycling etc. Currently the share of India in world trade for
plastics is very low.

The worlds biggest retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc and its Indian partner Bharti Enterprises ended up their
joint venture on 9th October 2013. From now on they will independently own and operate separate
businesses in the country. India in 2012 allowed foreign supermarket companies to own up to 51
percent of their local operations. However, no company has applied to enter the country under the rule.

Peter Higgs, United Kingdom and Francois Englert, Belgium jointly awarded Nobel Prize for Physics 2013
on 8th October 2013. For Contribution of Origin of Mass of Subatomic Particles
Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2013 Announced
Michael Levitt, a British and US citizen of Stanford University, US-Austrian Martin Karplus of Strasbourg
University and US-Israeli Arieh Warshel of the University of Southern California share The Nobel Prize in
Chemistry 2013 on 9 October 2013. Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences told that the Nobel Laureates in
Chemistry 2013 have made it possible to map the mysterious ways of chemistry by using computers.
Janet Yellen Nominated as Head of US Federal Reserve Board
US President Barack Obama on 9th October 2013 nominated Janet L. Yellen as the new head of the
Federal Reserve Board. Janet Yellen replaced Ben Bernanke as Chair of the Federal Reserve Board.
Ethiopia Parliament Elected Mulatu Teshome as New President
Ethiopia's parliament elected Mulatu Teshome as the country's new president for a six-year term.
Mulatu Teshome will replace Girma Wolde Giorgis, who first took the post in 2001 and was re-elected in
2007.
Malala Yousafzai Won EUs Sakharov Human Rights Prize 2013
Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teen shot by the Taliban for championing girls' education won the
European Union's (EU) Sakharov human rights prize 2013 on 10th October 2013.

mental illness and its effects on people. The theme for the year 2013 is Mental health and older adults
It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global
mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.
China surpasses USA as Biggest Oil Importer
China passed USA to become worlds biggest oil importer in September 2013 as per the data released by
US government in the first week of October 2013. Until the late 1990s, China fulfilled its oil needs but
the economic boom outstripped its production capacity. This compelled China to depend more heavily
on imports, especially from Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Wilfried Martens, 9 times Prime Minister of Belgium and who led the European Union's Christian
Democrat group, died on 9th October 2013. He was 77 years old.

Alice Munro won Nobel Prize 2013 in literature and became the first Canadian woman to take the Nobel
Prize since its launch in 1901. The Swedish Academy which selects Nobel literature winners described
her as the master of the contemporary short story.
