Justice V. Eswaraiah Takes Over as Chairperson of National Commission for Backward Classes
Government of India has appointed Justice Vangala Eswaraiah, former Acting Chief Justice of Andhra
Pradesh High Court as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes. It has been set
up under the National Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993, pursuant to the direction of the
Supreme Court in the Mandal case judgement for setting up a national body for Backward Classes at the
Centre as a permanent body.

The 16th meeting of the National Integration Council (NIC) held on September 23

2013 under the
Chairmanship of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh against the background of the recent communal
clashes in Muzaffarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh. The NIC was constituted to combat the evils of
communalism, casteism, regionalism, linguism and narrow-mindedness as a follow up of the National
Intergration Conference under then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in September-October, 1961. The
first meeting of NIC was held in 1962. The NIC declared its objectives in the meeting held in 1968 as
unity in diversity, freedom of religions, secularism, equality, justice-social-economic and political, and
fraternity among all communities.
Medical Health & Wellness Exhibition 2013 starts in Omans capital
A three day long Medical Health and Wellness Exhibition 2013 gets underway in Omans capital Muscat
on 23

September 2013. The focus of the event is on promoting health and wellness along with a display
of state of art healthcare products and equipment from all over the world. An 18-member delegation
from the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) is taking part in the event. Medical Tourism in
India is expected grow annually at the rate of 30%, making it a $2 billion industry by 2015. A report by
ASSOCHAM has projected that the number of medical tourists in India is expected to grow from 850,000
in 2011 to 32,00,000 by 2015
Jiyo Parsi Scheme Launched by the Government of India
Jiyo Parsi, the Central Sector Scheme for containing population decline of Parsis in India launched on
23rd September 2013 by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India. The main objective of
the Jiyo parsi scheme is to reverse the declining trend of Parsi population by adopting scientific protocol
and structured interventions, stabilize the Parsi population and increase the population of Parsis in
India.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel secures third term in office
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has secured a third term in office, with her party the Christian
Democrats winning 41 and a half percent of the vote in federal elections. Thus, this marks the best
federal election result since German reunification (1990).

Central Sector Scheme for Skill Development of Minorities to be implemented from the financial year
2013-14 onwards.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela has been presented with 'South-South award 2013' a
humanitarian achievement award for his contribution to South-South cooperation and sustainable
development. Madame Graa Machel, Mandela's wife, will receive a Humanitarian Achievement
Recognition for her tireless advocacy for education, children's welfare, and culture. The theme of this
years ceremony is Innovation and Technology for Sustainable Development.

under the central banks jurisdiction to give the authorities more powers over the microcredit
organisation. Grameen Bank is an institution that provides microcredit (small loans to poor people
possessing no collateral) to help its clients establish creditworthiness and financial self-sufficiency. In
2006 Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Grameen received the Nobel Prize for Peace.

The ninth edition of the bilateral Indian Navy-Royal Omani Navy biennial exercise Naseem Al Bahr

September 2013, off Oman, in the North Arabian Sea. The first Indian Navy-Royal
Navy of Oman exercise having been conducted in 1993, this year marks 20 years of IN-RNO bilateral
exercises. Bilateral relation between Indian and Oman were formally established with the 1953 Indo-
Oman Treaty of friendship, Navigation and Commerce, a first between Indian and any Arab country.
