UN General Assembly begins 68th session
The 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly is beginning on 24
th
September 2013. The
theme for this session is sustainable development. During the session, India will focus on issues of
sustainable development, counter terrorism, reforms of United Nations Security Council. India is hopeful
of a positive result on the issue of getting permanent membership in United Nations Security Council
before the summit on sustainable development in the year 2015.
Delhi Government Issued Guidelines to Rely Only on ELISA Test for Dengue Confirmation
The Government of Delhi advised all the city hospitals to rely only on the ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immune
Sorbent Assay) Test for confirmation of dengue, in order to put an end on any kind of confusion.
Chinese Paddler Liu Shiwen won Women's Table Tennis World Cup 2013
Chinese paddler Liu Shiwen won womens table tennis World Cup 2013. The tournament was held in
Kobe, Japan. Liu Shiwen is presently ranked world number 1.
Global Rate of HIV Infection, AIDS-Related Deaths Dramatically Reduced: UN
According to a UN report, the number of HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths has fallen dramatically.
UNAIDS said, death rates fell from 2.3 million during its peak in 2005 to 1.6 million in 2012. The number
of new HIV infections fell by a third since 2001 to 2.3 million. In 2001 there were more than half a
million new infections. By the end of 2012 almost 10 million people in low and middle income countries,
including South Africa, Uganda and India, were accessing antiretroviral therapy, according to the report.
The improved access is being attributed to drugs being more affordable and available in communities, as
well as more people coming forward for help.
Apollo Hospitals and Saarum Innovations Formed joint venture for First Commercial Bio-Bank of India
Apollo Hospitals and health science firm Saarum Innovations formed a joint venture for establishment of
Sapien Biosciences, the first commercial bio bank of India. Bio-banks are the libraries or the store house
of the human organism. There are various kinds of bio-specimens which include purified DNA, plasma,
saliva and blood. All these bio-specimens are maintained in the bio-banks.
Scientists of Indian Origin discovered blueprint for first universal flu vaccine
The influenza virus that causes flu is known to be one of the world's most rapidly changing organisms.
Flu vaccines become redundant after every season and aren't effective against every strain causing
cough, cold and other complications. So, scientists have to create new vaccines with new strains of the
virus each year. However, a team led by professor Ajit Lalvani from the National Heart and Lung Institute

The Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde inaugurated the 33rd Asian and Pacific Conference of
Correctional Administrators (APCCA) in New Delhi on 24

from delegates from 23 member countries, the delegates from States and UTs dealing with correctional
administrations are also attending the conference. Asian and Pacific Conference of Correctional
