Applications
printers, scanners, positioning, automation power tools, battery operated (toys, tooth brush, ..) traction, appliances/white goods power tools, fans, small appliances (coffee grinders, blenders, sewing machines, ..) automation, traction, precision, appliances/white goods

Strengths
constant torque, high holding torque, precise position control cheap to manufacture, simple control, no feedback necessary low cost, highly reliable

Weaknesses
control complexity can vary; speed control or high load condition low reliability (due to brushes), EMI, arcing, noisy, more difficult to cool, maintenance costs are relatively high complex control necessary to eliminate noise and torque ripple

Brushed DC (BDC)

Switched Reluctance (SR) (Synchronous) Universal

PMSM

cheap, simple control, good power/weight ratio, speed control possible, no feedback necessary, can be powered with AC or DC efficient, reliable, smooth operation; can be used in combustible environments; high torque efficient, reliable, smooth operation; can be used in combustible environments; high torque, quieter than BLDC motor is cheap, quiet, long lasting, efficient at fixed speeds

low reliability (due to brushes), EMI, arcing, noisy, poor torque and limited control, only unidirectional
ACIM

Brushless DC (BLDC) (Synchronous)

complex control for highest efficiency; relatively expensive, introduces electrical noise and torque ripple, normally needs sensors very complex control and (normally) sensors needed for highest efficiency; relatively expensive poor at low speeds, sensors and complex control necessary for high efficiency -> price rises

Asynchronous vs. Synchronous Decay

VM VM VM

Normal Operation
(PWM Voltage On)

Asynchronous Decay
(PWM Voltage Off)

Synchronous Decay
(PWM Voltage Off)

Asynchronous Decay:
Recirculation current Free Wheels through the body diodes. Power loss = I x 2VD

Synchronous Decay:
Recirculation current flows through the FETs .Power loss = I2 x (2xRDSON) and is typically lower than Asynchronous decay. There are several types of synchronous decay modes: Fast, Slow, and Mixed

Decay Mode Performance Tradeoffs

VM VM

Fast Decay Slow Decay

Mode

Current Decay Slow Fast

Torque Ripple/ Audible Noise Good Poor

Voltage to the load Higher Lower

Control when winding current is decreasing OK Better

Slow Decay Fast Decay

Mixed Decay Mode: The best of Both?

Critical Points:
Mixed decay: % of the decay cycle is fast decay followed by slow decay
Fast and slow decay ratio may be programmable depending on the driver Mixed decay is ideally suited for micro-stepping

Critical Points:

Analog OCP implementation (high side shown)

Two analog components of OCP:

- An analog current limit removes gate drive to the power FET to prevent very high currents from damaging the device (ILIMIT) - An overcurrent detection circuit monitors the current and provides an overcurrent signal to the digital core if the current exceeds IOCP
