am so excited that you want to study Gods precepts for life with us in the book of Titus! Were going to look at Pauls message to Titus about the churches on the island of Crete. Well learn all about godly church leadership, the relationship between sound doctrine and good works, and how you can live a godly life in an ungodly world. You couldnt have chosen to do a better thing, Beloved, than to sit at Jesus feet, listening to His every word. Gods Word, the Bible, has the answer for every situation of life. If you listen to what God is saying to the churchand to youyoull find yourself face-to-face with the Truth, and that Truth will surely bring transformation in your life!
The more you observe, the greater will be your understanding of Gods Word. Scripture is the best interpreter of Scripture, so you and I will be looking at other Scripture passages besides those in the book of Titus to get a clear understanding of Gods message. Where do observation and interpretation lead? They need to lead to application. Although the Bible is a very old book, it is Gods Word, which gives us everything that we need to know in order to live a life pleasing to God. After weve observed the text and discovered what it means, we need to think and live accordingly. The result is a transformed lifethe more you and I are in the Word of God and adjusting our thinking and behavior to its precepts for life, the more we will be changed into the likeness of Jesus Christ! He is the living Word of God who became flesh, the Savior of the world, and our coming King of kings!

As you listen to each program on radio or the Internet, keep a pen or pencil handy to write down or mark key words that Ill point out on the program. Youll find many of these key words on the back cover of this study guide, with suggested colors to use in marking them so that you can spot them quickly in the text. Try to mark each key word in the same way throughout the text. You can mark these key words ahead of time or after the program, whichever is easier. You can also get the CD of the program and mark the key words later while listening. Also feel free to mark them your own way. There is nothing sacred about the particular symbols I use. Do what is best for your own learning style. We all learn differently. You will also find in this study some Greek words that will amplify your understanding of Gods message to the church. The New Testament was originally written in Koine Greekthe common language at that time. Periodically throughout these programs, I will give you the original Greek word and its meaning. Youll also find the Strongs number for each Greek word so you can look it up later for even more study. All the cross-references Ill mention in these programs are given to you under the sections called Wheres That Verse? If you can, look them up with me. You can write these in the margin of the text of the Observation Worksheets in this study guide, or if you have a New Inductive Study Bible, there are wide margins where you can write them. I suggest you use a pencil, then write them in ink later. At the end of each day, think about what you learned and how you can apply those truths to your life. Write out these personal applications on the pages at the end of this study guide entitled, My Commitment to the Truth Based On What Ive Learned Today. After you study the book of Titus you might want to continue to mark your own Bible in the same way. I find that it helps me greatly to have my notes in my Bible when I have my morning quiet time with God in the Word and in prayer. If you do not have a New Inductive Study Bible, you might want to consider getting one at your local Christian bookstore, or call us at 800-763-1990, or order it online at www.preceptsforlife.com. It gives you instructions and helps you study each book of the Bible inductively so that you can continue to discover truth for yourself. 5

The island of Crete lies off the south coast of Greece. In the first century Christian churches had been started in several cities (Titus 1:5). The fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Crete is a long, narrow, and mountainous island, 170 miles long from East to West, but not more than 35 miles wide at its widest point. Europe lies to the north, Asia to the east and Africa to the south. 8
A Knowledge of Truth
SYNOPSIS You are beginning an exciting adventure! If read and heeded, the book of Titus can turn churches around, impact communities, and eventually remold our nation for God! It was written around the same time as the book of 1 Timothy, about A.D. 62, when the early Church was being challenged by the culture around it. This powerful epistle is bursting with instructions to help us live out our faith in an equally challenging world today! As you study it, be watching for what you can learn about the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness. (Titus 1:1) QUESTIONS 1. Look first at the references to the author of this letter that you already marked (in blue). Who was he, and what do you learn about him in this first chapter? Theres a page at the end of this guide for you to write insights on. 2. Look next at the references to the recipient that you marked (in orange). Who was he, and what do you learn about him in this first chapter? 3. Where was Titus when Paul wrote this letter? Mark that geographical reference in your Observation Worksheets by double-underlining it in green. 4. What in Titus 1:5 implies that Paul visited Crete at some point? 5. What did Paul commission Titus to do in the cities of Crete? (Titus 1:5) 6. What do you learn about the purpose of this letter from the first chapter? Prayer
Father God, thank You for the example set by Paul and Titusmen who followed You and obeyed Youand then saw You accomplish great things through them. How I long to be putty in Your hands, Lord, that You can mold and shape and prepare meto send me where You want me to go to do Your work. Make me willing to listen and obey, even if Your calling on my life leads me to difficult and challenging situations without much glory or thanks. I want to be Your faithful bondservant, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen!
LESSON 1
Wheres That Verse? Isaiah 59:14,15 Romans 1:21-32 Greek Words
The phrase set in order what remains or straighten out the things that are unfinished in Titus 1:5 includes the Greek verb (#1930, [epidiorthose], Titus 1:5). The root Greek noun, orthos, means straight as in orthodontist (someone who straightens teeth). Set straight implies a prior crooked condition. The verb was picked up in early periods by physicians for setting bones. Back then, lacking the pain medications we have today, bone setting was a painful procedure, especially if bones had to be re-broken. Here, Paul asks Titus to straighten the churches in Crete by appointing elders who meet the tough spiritual criteria he lays out in Titus 1:6-16.
LESSON 2
Wheres That Verse?
Revelation 21:4,5 Revelation 22:3-5 Ephesians 1:3-5 John 11:54; 12:36; 16:33 John 15:16-19 1 Peter 1:1-2 Galatians 1:15-17
A Bond-Servant of God
SYNOPSIS Are you willing to make yourself a slave of God for the sake of the Gospel? What does that mean in todays world? As we study the book of Titus together, my goal is to help you discover truth for yourselfto come face-to-face with Gods precepts for life so you can live as more than a conqueror, so you can know the victory that overcomes the world! Whom are you serving today? And what reputation do you have? If you were to select some words to describe yourself, would you use bond-servant? Isnt it interesting that one of the greatest leaders in the early church described himself as a servant?
Greek Words
Bond-servant (#1401, [doulos], Titus 1:1). Paul introduces himself to Titus as a bond-servant of God, although he more frequently refers to Christ as His master (Rom. 1:1; 2 Cor. 4:5; Gal. 1:10; Phil. 1:1). Doulos was the common term for slave. Slaves are not free from their masters rule, whether they serve willingly or not. Consequently, the New Testament contrasts doulos with freedom. Even when the Son of Man sets a person free from the slavery of sin (John 8:34,36), as Paul notes, the person becomes enslaved to the Lord (Rom. 6:18,22). Apostle (#652, [apostolos]), from the Greek preposition apo (from) and the verb stello (to set, place, appoint, send). Paul was not one of the original twelve apostles, but God called him to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles (Acts 9:1-16), something he focused on particularly after the Jews rejected the message. First-century apostles who received New Covenant revelation directly from God during the formation of the biblical canon had qualities that are no longer valid today: first, they are defined as those who physically saw Jesus after His resurrection (1 Cor. 9:1), and secondly, they had unique signs to authenticate the revelation they received and preached (2 Cor. 12:12). This kind of apostle, responsible for authoring New Testament books, is no longer with us.
QUESTIONS
1. Mark every reference to God in Titus with a purple triangle over the word. Youre going to learn many truths about God in this study! 2. Whats the significance of the facts that God cannot lie and that His promises are from long ages ago? (Titus 1:2). What hope does that give you? 3. How does Paul describe the culture Titus was working in on the island of Crete? (Titus 1:10-12 and 16) 4. What does Paul call Titus in Titus 1:4? 5. What do the following Scripture verses tell you about Titus and his qualifications to lead the churches on Crete? Galatians 2:1-5; 2 Corinthians 2:12-13; 8:16,23-24; 12:18; 2 Timothy 4:9-10. 6. Check the chart on page 50 to see the sequence of events in Pauls life after his conversion. Draw a line from Pauls First missionary journey (just before the Apostolic Council at Jerusalem, when Paul first took Titus with him), to the year the book of Titus was written (see Paul goes to Crete). About how long had Paul and Titus been associated?
Prayer
Lord God, I want to be Your servant, to obey You in everything. I ask You to mark me as Your bond-servant for life. I want to stay on message and finish well, as Paul did. I want to be known as a godly follower of Jesus Christ who can be entrusted with kingdom responsibilities. Rescue me from selfishness and worldliness. Help me to put Your interests far above my own. In Christs precious name, Amen.

A Lifestyle of Godliness
SYNOPSIS Is there an energy crisis in the Church? As we study Titus, were going to see how important it is to live a holy lifestyle in todays culture. We need to be salt and light in the midst of a corrupt generation. Without the light of life radiating through us, our society will experience moral blackout! You and I need to model every word that comes out of the mouth of God to our culture to stay the course to holiness!
LESSON 3
Wheres That Verse? John 1:1,14 Romans 5:1-2 Romans 8:15 1 Cor. 1:7,8 Greek Words
Elder (#4245, [presbuteros], Titus 1:5). The presbyter has the office of oversight, supervision, superintendence. The elder or presbyter is charged with the duty of seeing that ministry procedures in the Church are done justly and efficiently. The use of the term in the Church is a carryover from Judaismmembers of the Sanhedrin were called elders (Matt. 26:57; Acts 24:1). If you carefully observe the connection for in Titus 1:7, youll see that Paul identifies the presbyter (elders, 1:5) with the overseer (#1985, , episcopate, bishop, 1:7). Above reproach (#410, [anegkletos], Titus 1:6), from either the alpha privative a(n), not, or the preposition ana, above, plus egkaleo, to call in, bring a charge against. A bishop must live an exemplary life, one with no accusations, blameless.
QUESTIONS 1. Make a list of the qualifications for elders Paul gave Titus in Titus 1:6-9. In your Observation Worksheets number the negative characteristics that should not mark a leader in the church. Then number the positive qualities they should exhibit.
Prayer
Holy Father, I know I dont measure up to Your standards. I want to live according to Your precepts rather than by the worlds standards, but I desperately need Your help to do it. Forgive me for the dirt in my life. Clean me up and turn me around so that I can live for You as the holy person Youve called me to be. Please continue Your work in me, through the power of Your Holy Spirit, that I might be a purified disciple, zealous for good works! In Christs name I pray, Amen.

LESSON 4
Wheres That Verse? Romans 6:4 2 Corinthians 5:17 2 Corinthians 5:14-16 1 Timothy 3:1-7 For More Study!
How Can a Man Control His Thoughts, Passions and Desires
A One-Woman Man
SYNOPSIS Whats your idea of the model man? Has it been shaped by the macho man seen on TV, in billboards, and in movies? Lets see what God says He wants a man to be like, especially a leader in His Church, representing Him here on earth. If the culture we live in is to see an example of Gods love and mercy as well as His holiness, then we need to understand and model what He wants His ambassadors to be.
QUESTIONS 1. Look again at the job description Paul gives Titus for an elder. Which quality is repeated and umbrellas the rest?
2. How do you feel when you look at this list? Does it bring to mind old sins and guilt from the past?
3. Do you feel convicted by this list that there are areas of your life not measuring up to Gods standards?
4. According to Titus 1:9, what are the two reasons an elder must know Gods Word? What will an elder be able to do, when he has obeyed God and held fast to His Word?
Prayer
Lord God, I know I haven't been perfectI haven't measured up to Your standards. There's so much in my life that haunts me with guilt. Heal me of the hurts and regrets, Lord, and do Your work in my heart! I thank You that in Christ Ive been crucified and buried in Him and that old things have passed away. Now I want to walk in newness of life with Him! Teach me how to control my thoughts, passions, and desires. Help me to love and minister to my family as You've called me to do, in the power of Your Holy Spirit. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.

Reckless Living
SYNOPSIS Titus is a very practical book! It helps us live out our commitment to Christ. Its also a very convicting book, pointing its finger at areas of our lives that can make us squirm! Read it with an open heart, letting God, the great heart surgeon, do His work in you, cutting out heart disease and leading you into health and vitality. He wants to mold you to be blamelessthe kind of person who represents Him well on this earth so that His Word is not dishonored! Ask Him to do His expert surgery on your heart today!
LESSON 5
Wheres That Verse? Ephesians 5:17-18 Luke 15:11-13 Greek Words
Dissipation (#810, [asotias], Titus 1:6), from the alpha privative a (not) and sozo (to save), thus literally not salvageable, wasteful. The term is always associated with profligacy, extravagance, recklessness (as opposed to self-control; see Eph. 5:18; 1 Pet. 4:4). The example of an asotos we all know is the prodigal son that lived loose[ly] or riotous[ly] (Luke 15:13, respectively the NASB and KJV versions). Rebellion (#506, [anupotakta], Titus 1:6), from the alpha privative a (not) and hupotasso (to subject), thus insubordinate, disorderly, rebellious.
QUESTIONS 1. Read through Titus again. This time draw a red arrow next to every verse that includes instruction or exhortation. (Feel free to use the Observation Worksheets in the back of this study guide if youre not ready to mark in your Bible) and then record what youve learned on the page entitled, My Commitment to the Truth Based on What Ive Learned Today. 2. What priorities does Paul charge elders with in Titus 1:6-9? 3. What priority should a relationship with the Lord have in the elders life? (Matthew 10:37,38; 16:24) 4. What is the basic problem in the negative qualities Paul says should not mark an elder? 5. As you look at your life, which areas would you say are out of control, selfishly controlled, and under Gods control?
Prayer
O Lord God, reveal to me areas of my life where I'm rebelling against You, not living according to Your standards. Then, Father, please forgive me and help me bring my thoughts captive to Christ, to be accountable to You and to Your Word. Give me a godly friend who can challenge me to live to Your glory. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.
13
LESSON 6
Wheres That Verse? Galatians 5:19-23 Psalm 119:104 2 Chronicles 19:2 Greek Words
Self-willed (#829, [authade], Titus 1:7), from autos (self) and hedomai (to please), from which we get our English word hedonisticthus, self-pleasing (only here and in 2 Peter 2:10). Quick-tempered (#3711, [orgilon], Titus 1:7). This is just one word in Greek, not a compound with quick. In another place, Paul says Be angry [orgizesthe, same root] and sin not (Eph. 4:26), so some anger is justified. Commentators justifiably attach qualifiers like quick to get (angry) or prone to (anger). Pugnacious (#4131, [plektes], Titus 1:7), from plesso (to strike), so a striker (like pug or pugilist, which is slang for boxer). The pugnacious person is ready to strike someone with words if not fists. Sordid gain (#146, [auschrokerde], Titus 1:7), from aischros (shameful, indecent) and kerdos (gain). This is a criterion for selecting both elders (here and in 1 Tim. 3:3) and deacons (I Tim. 3:8). There is legitimate gain as Jesus teaches in the Parable of the Talents, but theres also dishonest gain. Sensible (#4998, [sophrona], Titus 1:8), from sos (sound) and phren (mind). Soundmindedness means discreet, clear, sensible in judgment (Rom. 12:3; Tit. 2:6; 1Pet. 4:7).
QUESTIONS 1. How well do you handle anger in your family? On the job? At your church? 2. How can you do a better job of handling angry feelings when they arise? Whose will do you need to submit to? 3. In what areas of your life are you still selfish and self-willed? 4. Review the positive qualities Paul tells Titus the leader should have. List them here and grade yourself 1-10 for each characteristic, 10 being the best.
5. Read through the Observation Worksheets of Titus and mark every use of the word sensible in a distinctive way as a key, repeated word. Prayer
Father God, how unfit they are to govern a church who cannot govern themselves, govern their turbulent and unruly passions! Help me to be meek, gentle, peace-loving, and patient to everyone through the power of Your Holy Spirit working within me. Convict me when Im self-willed, quick-tempered, and contentious, and prune these sins out of my life. Make me more like Christ, Lord. Thats what Youve created me to be, and thats the desire of my heart. I love You, Lord, and I want to walk in Your ways! I pray these things in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

LESSON 7
Wheres That Verse? 1 Corinthians 4:1,2 Genesis 39:4 1 Thessalonians 1:5 Colossians 3:1-4 Ephesians 5:25-26 Galatians 5:22-23 1 Corinthians 5:8,9 Greek Words
Just (#1342, [dikaios], Titus 1:8), righteous, someone who conforms to Gods Law. Jesus Christ alone was perfect. Peter calls him just in his first epistle (1 Peter 3:18), and Paul concludes that through one act of righteousness [] there resulted the justification [] of life to all men (Rom. 5:18). We are saved through faith in the perfect righteousness of Jesus atonement alone, but after were born again, God sanctifies us, making us more righteous, more like Jesus (Rev. 22:11). Devout (#3741, [hosion], Titus 1:8), pure, holy, unpolluted. Revelation 15:4 says God alone is holy () and Jesus is His most perfect expression of holy () humanity, separate and undefiled (Heb. 7:26). Leaders must be wholly committed to Gods service. Holding Fast (#472, [antechomenon], a present participle, Titus 1:9), from anti (against) and echo (to have), thus to have against (your body), hold close, cling to. We hold physical things that are valuable to us close to our bodies (like our children when theres danger lurking). The object here, however, the faithful Word, lends itself more to being held close to the heart. Those who hold the Word of God close to their hearts speak it constantly and show it in their lives.
QUESTIONS 1. Review Titus chapters 1 and 2 and your list of positive qualifications for elders. Compare it with the list of qualities for older men in Titus 2.
2. Which qualities apply to your relationship with God and which ones to the way you relate to people?
4. Go through Titus and look for every reference to the truth, the Word of God, and sound doctrine. Mark them the same way with a small brown book (see back cover example).
5. How much time in Gods Word do you think you need in order to hold it fast?
Prayer
Dear Lord God, Im powerless to be a good person without Your help. I need Your Holy Spirit working within me. I can't trust myself to be hospitable, loving, good and sensible, even in relationships with the people I love most! Help me to be devout in my relation to You and just before others. In Christs holy name, Amen.

LESSON 8
Wheres That Verse? Timothy 3:16 Thessalonians 2:5 Peter 2:2,3 Timothy 1:3,4 Timothy 4:1,2 Greek Words
To exhort (#3870, [parakalein], Titus 1:9), to encourage, comfort, from para (alongside) and kaleo (to call). Both the Holy Spirit and Jesus are called Paraclete, Helper and Advocate respectively in John 14:26 and 1 John 2:1. The advocate or encourager is one we can call to our side. In the context, leaders are available to side with and encourage people against those who contradict, using sound doctrine. Sound (#5198, [hugiainouse], Titus 1:9, also in 1:13; 2:1,2), healthy, as in Luke 5:31: It is not those who are well [] who need a physician, but those who are sick. We can infer that those who contradict have sickening doctrines (teachings): Poison of a viper is under their lips (Ps. 140:3, cf. Rom. 3:13). Leaders differentiate teachings that heal us from those that make us sick. Doctrine (#1319, [didaskalia], Titus 1:9), teaching, from which we get our English word didactic (see Eph. 4:14; 1 Tim. 4:1). Leaders appeal to healthy truth from the Word to refute those who contradict. To refute (#1651, [elegchein], an infinitive, Titus 1:9, also in 1:13; 2:15). The Classic Greek term carried ideas of shame and disgracenormal reactions when arguments are refuted, especially publicly, as in Jesus teaching: [The world] hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil, (John 7:7, cf. John 8:9 [KJV]).
2 1 1 1 2
Prayer
Lord, keep me focused on Your truth. Strengthen me in the inner man through Your precious and faithful Word so I will be able to recognize false teaching and reprove, refute, and exhort those around me with a loving, compassionate spirit. Purify me, Lord, from all ungodly motives. I want to be Your faithful ambassadorto go where You want me to go and do what You want me to do on this earth. In the name of Your beloved Son Jesus, Amen.

LESSON 9
Ammunition For You
Conspiracy, The Da Vinci Code, and the Bible, by Precept staff editor Dr. Rick Purdy with Aimee Hammond. Whether youve read The Da Vinci Code or not, you need to know how it stacks up against the Word of God. This concise booklet refutes major errors taught by a prominent figure in the book and enables you to talk intelligently about them with those who have been misled. We want to make this booklet available to you free of charge. Just call us at 800763-1990 and ask for this special offer. Its our prayer that God will use this research to arm you for battle in defense of His Truth!
QUESTIONS 1. Review the first chapter of Titus again, looking especially at verses 13 and 14. Why did Paul tell Titus to reprove those who are teaching things they should not teach (Titus 1:11)?
2. The most significant error in The Da Vinci Code is that the Bible is the product of mennot the Word of God. What was Jesus opinion in Matthew 4:4 and John 17:17? Whats yours?
3. How could weak believers react to the books accusation that the church has covered up Jesus marrying Mary Magdalene and having children with her?
Prayer
Father, make me wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove, so that I will calmly be able to silence those who lead Your people astray. I know I need to spend more time in Your powerful Word, Lord. I need to hold it fast in my heart to be the strong and valiant warrior You want me to be in today's hostile world. Save me from apathy, laziness, and self-indulgence, Lord. Put Your words in my heart and on my lips so that I will be a faithful follower in this generation. In the name of Jesus my Savior, I pray. Amen.

LESSON 10
Wheres That Verse? Romans 6:4 Matthew 7:20-27 Greek Words
Profess (#3670, [homologousin], Titus 1:16), confess, from homos (same), and lego (to say), thus to say the same thing, to concur, agree. Its amazing how alike the defiled (1:15) seem to the pure because they confess the same truthsspeak the same spiritual language. But this is a surface comparison only; ultimately their deeds contradict their words. Deeds (#2041, [ergois]), works.
2. What contrast do you see in Titus 1:15-16 and Titus 2:1? What two groups of people are in the church at Crete?
Prayer
Dear Lord God, I want to be pure and undefiled, able to help others who are turning away from Your truth. I confess that some of my deeds are unholy and disobedient, and I know You see them as detestable and worthless. I want my doctrine to be sound so my works will truly glorify You. Help me to be self-controlled, dignified, and sensible, so that all I say and do will represent You well. In Jesus precious name, I pray. Amen.

A Crisis of Character
SYNOPSIS Our society is experiencing a crisis in morals, just as Cretes society was when Paul wrote this letter! In the second chapter, Paul instructs Titus to teach groups of people godly character so that the word of God will not be dishonored (Titus 2:5). As you review chapter 2, watch for different categories of people mentioned. Well focus on what Paul says to women today and how you and I can change the character of ourselves, our family, and our culture. QUESTIONS 1. What does Paul instruct Titus to teach in Titus 2:1? 2. What should the character of older women should be (in Titus 2:3)? 3. What are some of the responsibilities of older women in the Church (Titus 2:3)? 4. What character traits should older women teach younger ones? 5. What have you learned from God that you can teach others? 6. What do you need to know in order to mentor people, guiding them to godliness? 7. Why do you suppose Paul instructed Titus to have older women teach younger women? Is this is good advice? Why?
LESSON 11
Did You Know?
CretansLying was widespread in Crete. In Titus 1:12, Paul may be quoting sixth-century B.C. poet, Epimenides, when he says one of their own describes them as dishonest, beastly, lazy, and gluttonousnot very flattering! The Cretan reputation for dishonesty contributed to the invention of a new (Koine Greek) verb, cretanize for lying, a fitting contrast to the God who cannot lie (apseudes, literally lie-less, Titus 1:2). The eternal life God promised will be ours because He keeps His promises. We can build our faith on the foundation of a God who never lies.
Prayer
Dear Lord God, I should be modeling for others how You want me to live, but I feel weighed down so often by inadequacies and trials. Assure me that You will give me the power to reach out to help and mentor others, even in the midst of my pain and uncertainty. Thank You for the many things You have already taught me. Help me to be ready to teach people You bring into my life by word and by example so that we will all be molded into the glorious image of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Do the work You need to do in my life. In Christ's name I pray, Amen.

LESSON 12
Wheres That Verse? 1 Corinthians 6:12 Psalm 29:9 Titus 3:8 Did You Know?
The verb enslaved in verse 3 is the Greek verb doulo (#1402). Its associated with the noun bond-servant in Titus 1:1. Addiction is slavery, but God can break the ties that bind.
Set Free!
SYNOPSIS We can be set free from addictions in our lives! In Titus chapter 2, Paul instructs his spiritual son, Titus, to teach sound doctrine. In verse 3 the emphasis is on older womenwhat Titus should teach them so that they will know their roles in the church and live according to Gods Word. Its clear from this verse that some older women in the church at Crete had problems with alcohol. Christians suffer from addictions today just as they did in the first century. How can we attack and overcome them? The answer is in the Word of God.
QUESTIONS 1. List the qualities that Paul instructs older women to have in their lives:
Prayer
Dear Lord God, I dont want to be mastered by anything or anyone except You. Break the power of addiction in my life. Free me from bondages to Satan and my own lusts and set me on a new course to live a life of reverence and commitment to You. I want to be used in Your kingdom, Lord. I want to share with others what You have done and are doing in my life. I know Im far from being a good role model for others to follow, but I pray that You would complete Your work in me and give me opportunities to tell others about Your power to save and deliver! In Jesus precious name, Amen.
26
LESSON 13
Wheres That Verse? Ephesians 5:25-28 Genesis 2:18 Ephesians 4:11-16 Mark It!
Love is not a key repeated word in Titus, but it is a key concept throughout Scripture. Mark it with a red heart when you read it.
Greek Words
Love their husbands (#5362, [philandrous], Titus 2:4), literally, to be husband-lovers. Phileo carries the connotation of affection, dearness, friendship. Workers at home (#3626, [oikourgous], Titus 2:5), literally house workers, probably corresponding to helper in Genesis 2:18. Being subject (#5293, [hupotassomenas], Titus 2:5), from hupo (under) and tasso (to arrange, rank). The present participle shows the need for the regularity of this so the Word of God will not be dishonored. In an absolute disagreement that is not a matter of immorality, the married woman should subordinate her will to that of her husband, just as Jesus did with His Father: Not My will but Thine be done.
Prayer
Dear Lord God, what a ministry You've given women in their homes! I want to be in right relationships with those You have put closest to me. I want to love and enjoy them as You created me to do. Help me to grow in all aspects in You and build up the body of Christ. Help me love others as You love mewholly, selflessly, and unconditionally. I pray that I will always put You first among my priorities. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

LESSON 14
Wheres That Verse? Genesis 2:24 Hebrews 13:4 Ephesians 5:21-31
QUESTIONS 1. Look up the cross-references under Wheres That Verse? What does the Bible say about sex within marriage? 2. According to Genesis 2:24, what is one of the most important factors in a successful marriage? 3. Have relationships with your children ever crowded out your relationship with your spouse? 4. What can you do to repair a damaged relationship and begin to love your spouse the way God wants you to? 5. What can older Christian women actually do to encourage young women to love their husbands and keep peace in their marriages? Prayer
Dear Lord God, thank You for giving me precepts I can live by to grow and please You. I want to embrace these principles and experience the abundant life You sent Your Son to give me. Open my heart to hear Your Word and respond. Make me the person You want me to be; help me to love as You've loved mefully, completely, unconditionally. In Christs name I pray, Amen.

QUESTIONS 1. Read Titus 2:4 again and note the priority children should have in a young woman's life. 2. Why does it say young women should learn to love their children in a godly way? 3. What do you learn from the first two cross-references under Wheres That Verse? about instruction and discipline? 4. If you have children, do you usually discipline them out of love or anger? 5. Read the promise to women in 1 Timothy 2:15. Does this give you hope? How important is your modeling of these qualities to your children? 6. From Titus 2:4,5 list other qualities a woman should have to help her love her children in a godly way
NOT
LORD,
HIM. (Hebrews 12:5). The Lord corrects us like children, sometimes even chastising us. The writer of Hebrews counsels us to avoid two extremesthinking lightly of and fainting under these stripes. Gods ultimate purpose is for us to persevere, not faint, so we must take His correction very seriously.
Prayer
Dear Lord God, in so many ways I feel like I've "blown it" as a parent. Forgive me for being a poor example in the past and make me the kind of parent You want me to be. From this day forward, I want to live for You and serve You, and I want my family to be a living representative of Your love. Thank You for redeeming and restoring us. Teach me how to discipline and love my children so they will continue in faith, love, and holiness with self-restraint. I love You and thank You, Lord. In Christ's name, I pray. Amen.

LESSON 16
Wheres That Verse? 2 Timothy 3:1-7 1 Corinthians 13:11 Psalm 119:128 2 Corinthians 11:1-3 Joshua 1:6 1 Chronicles 22:13 Ephesians 5:3-5,11,12 Matthew 5:8 Greek Words
Pure (#53 [hagnas], Titus 2:5), meaning free from defilement. Sometimes the term is used in the general behavioral sense of "blameless, as when its connected with conduct (1 Pet. 3:2) or task (2 Cor. 7:11); at other times, its connected to a specific species of purity like sexual purity, as when it's coupled with virgin (2 Cor. 11:2). Paul tells us to think about pure things all the time (Phil. 4:8).
QUESTIONS 1. List qualities from Titus 2:4, 5 that older women should encourage and teach younger women.
2. Count the number of times the words sensible (self-controlled) or sensibly are used in the first two chapters.
3. Review the meaning of the Greek word for sensible in the Greek Words sidebar of Lesson 6 (the word appears in 1:8; 2:2,5,6,12) and ask God if there areas of your life where He wants you to be more sensiblegiving up some of your freedom to fully obey Him.
4. Read Ephesians 5:3 (think on these things), then write down how to stay pure in todays culture. What choices do you need to make?
Prayer
Dear Father, I want to be sensible and pureI want to see You clearly and become the person You want me to be. Help me to make wise choices, listening attentively to the prompting of Your Holy Spirit, and help me to keep myself from being polluted by all the impurity in the world around me. I want to know You and understand You in all Your beauty and purity. Teach me self-restraint and discipline so that I will honor You in everything I say and do. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Workers at Home
SYNOPSIS What a big responsibility! Older women should teach younger women to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored (Titus 2:5). Does this mean women should not work outside their homes? In our culture, weve bought into the myth that women are not fulfilled in domestic work. What does the Bible say? QUESTIONS 1. What are some of the married womans primary responsibilities, as described in Titus 2? If youre married, what can you do to make your home more Christ-honoringa place of peace and order, a little bit of heaven on earth? 2. Do you know an older woman you can learn from in creating a home that truly honors Christ? 3. Do Pauls instructions about younger women preclude their work outside their homes? What about the excellent woman in Proverbs 31? What can a Christian woman do to keep her priorities straight and to decide how many hours a week to work? 4. If youre a working mom, are you working because you need to or just to provide your family with more stuff and a bigger home? 5. What can single moms do to be good mothers and keepers of their homes, if they need to work? 6. In what special way has God spoken to you in this study so far? Is there something youve learned or been convicted of? Be sure to write about it on page 49 entitled My Commitment to the Truth Based on What Ive Learned Today. Prayer
Dear Lord God, help me not to wrestle against Your standards, but to embrace them and understand Your heart. I want to do a better job of the responsibilities You've given me. Thank You for Your teaching. I want to learn Your principles so I can pass them on to others. In Jesus' holy name, Amen.
LESSON 17
Wheres That Verse? Proverbs 31 1 Timothy 5:14,15 Greek Words
[To] keep house (#3616, [oikodespotein], 1 Timothy 5:14), from oikos (home) and despoteo (to rule, master, from which our English despot is derived). This interesting combination reveals that women should rule over domestic affairs master of the house, not master of the husband.

LESSON 18
Wheres That Verse? Deuteronomy 8:3 Psalm 12:6 Proverbs 31:10-31 Greek & Hebrew Words
Excellent (#2428, lyIx;, chayil: strong, efficient, wealthy, Proverbs 31:10). Kind (#18, [agathas], Titus 2:5), good. Being subject to their own husbands immediately follows as a subordinate or qualifying participlekind, being subject . . . In other words, subjection is a form of goodnessa goodness that keeps the Word of God from being dishonored.
QUESTIONS 1. The culture of first century Crete was similar to that of twentyfirst century America. What qualities Paul has mentioned so far are needed today?
2. While this section is written for women, the standards God has set for them are important for men to know as well. Why is it important for believing husbands to understand this portion of Scripture?
Prayer
Dear Lord God, I want to be faithful to obey Your precepts, even if I dont completely understand them. Help me to manage the things Youve brought into my life and to order my priorities so that You are always first, my spouse second, and my children third. I want to create in my home a peaceful, godly atmosphere that honors You and brings You glory. I want to look well to the affairs of my home and be kind to my family. I want to support my spouse as the excellent person you desire. Work these qualities in both of us, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen.

Submit Or Else . . . !
SYNOPSIS The idea of submission has been misused to subdue and control. What is the true meaning of submission from a biblical perspective? Read Titus chapter 2 again and see who Paul says a woman should be subject to and why.
LESSON 19
Wheres That Verse? Ephesians 5:21-33 Colossians 3:18-19 1 Timothy 2:9-15 1 Peter 3:1-7 Greek Words
QUESTIONS 1. Review by writing down the key teachings older women should teach younger women in the church: 2. Why (Paul concludes) should young women learn these character traits? 3. If youre a wife, what do you learn from Titus 2:4-5 about why you should and how you can submit to your husband? 4. What does your flesh and our culture tell you thats opposite? 5. Read 1 Peter 3:1-7. What insights about biblical submission do you observe in this passage?
6. How can you grow in love and trust for the Lord so your heart will want to obey Him? 7. If youre a man, has this study given you new insight into the meaning of submission?
Prayer

I long for harmonious relationships that will honor and glorify You! Please change me, Lord! Give me a humble spirit and a kind heart. Guard my tongue from speaking evil. Help me seek peace in my marriage, family, and other relationships. Thank you for the way you're working in my life through this study! In Jesus name, Amen.

A Godly Example?
SYNOPSIS What would you do if you didnt have godly people in your life to look up to? What happens when a young wife is not taught by an older, godly woman to be a woman of purity, to be sensible, to keep a home, to be kind, to be subject to her husband? Mary Alice Whalley sees women each week that have never had that kind of a role model. Listen to her stories and ask God to speak to your heart today. Have you discovered God's high calling on your life? Seek Him today and commit your life fully to His purposes.
TITUS TITUS
Lesson 1 Lesson 2
QUESTIONS 1. Does Pauls instruction for older women to teach younger ones involve inner attitudes, outer actions, or a mix?
2. Do people look up to you? Does your example motivate younger believers to honor God?
3. Read John 15:5. How do Jesus words encourage you to be a godly example?
4. What qualities do you look for in role models and teachers? Are you following the right people?
Prayer
Father, thank You for my high calling in Christ! Help me to be reverent with my tongueto speak words that heal and build up and keep me from speaking words that tear down. Put Your words in my mouth. In Christs name, I pray. Amen.

LESSON 21
Wheres That Verse? Deuteronomy 8:3 Matthew 4:1-4 2 Timothy 2:15 Proverbs 7:7 Ephesians 5:3 Greek Words
Sound (#5199, [hugie], healthy) in speech (#3056, [logon], word) which is above reproach (#176, [akatagnoston], not censurable, condemnable, or reprehensible; Titus 2:8), an interesting contrast between words that heal and words that sicken and shouldnt be spoken, reminding us that death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21)). Adorn (#2885, [kosmousin], the verb from which our English word cosmetics is derived, Titus 2:10). The context is servants serving: theyre to be obedient to their masters, not contradicting them or pilfering from them, but rather showing (displaying) all (nothing but) good loyalty. This display adorns the Worddecorates it, proving that the Word is working within. In his pastoral Epistle to Timothy, Paul contrasts godly and worldly cosmetics for women as well: I want women to adorn [, kosmein] themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness (1 Timothy 2:9,10). Attracting others to faith, humility, and good works is commended against attracting others to other, worldly things (cf. 1 Peter 3:1; cf. Matthew 5:16).
QUESTIONS 1. What does Paul say young men should be? List the qualities here: 2. Which qualities do you think you need to work on? 3. What do we need to do to have purity in doctrine? What is our source for doctrine? 4. Contrast Titus 2:7 with Titus 1:16. Have you already marked the key word deeds? What good deeds is God leading you to do? Ask Him for discernment and clear direction. 5. Are there areas of speech you need to work on so that it is beyond reproach (v. 8)? 6. What instruction does Paul give to bondslaves in Titus 2:9,10? Does this principle apply to employees today? How can this be lived out in a very practical way?
Prayer
Father God, how I long for my life to be a reflection of Your grace! Help me through the indwelling power of Your Holy Spirit to be conformed to the image of Your Son, to live in the world and within the Church as an example of good deeds, pure doctrine, dignity, and sound speech. Help me keep Your doctrine pure before all men by never adding to or subtracting from it, but rather always dividing it rightly. Help me represent You so well that others will be drawn to You! In the precious name of Christ, my Savior, I pray. Amen.

LESSON 22
Wheres That Verse? John 3:16 1 John 3:1-3 Ephesians 2 Matthew 24:27,30 Revelation 1:4-7 Matthew 7:17-20 1 Corinthians 6:19,20 1 Peter 1:18,19 Greek Words
Instructing (#3811, [paideuousa], Titus 2:12), from the root #3816 [pais], child. The grace of God instructs us as we would instruct children, firmly but patiently. Possibly Paul has in mind a contrast with the harsh disciplinary method of law.
QUESTIONS 1. If you havent done so, go through the entire book of Titus and mark references to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with the suggested markings on the back cover. 2.Circle the repeated phrase God our Savior (cf. 1 Timothy 1:1; 2:3; Jude 25). How many times can you find it in Titus? 3. Do you see the three doctrinal sections in this book? (Titus 1:1-4; 2:11-15; 3:4-8) Look back over what youve marked and observe three places where there are clusters of references to God. Mark the three sections with brackets, since they summarize the sound doctrine Paul instructed Titus to uphold. 4. Examine again Titus 2:11-14 and diagram the sentence structure by following this example:

Prayer
Lord God, purify my heart! Cleanse me from bad motives and secret sins. Thank You for Your incredible grace that has saved me! Help me to deny ungodliness and temptation and live for Yousensibly, righteously, and godlyin this present age. In Christ Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Make me ready to do every good deed. Let others see You in me! Help me to be an example so that I can speak with authorityYour authority! In Christ's name I pray, Amen.
41
LESSON 24
Wheres That Verse? Psalm 14:1 Ephesians 2:1-5 Romans 3:23 Revelation 20:6,14,15 Colossians 1:13 Matthew 19:28 Greek Words
Washing (#3067, [loutrou], Titus 3:5), a basin for washing, but here the function is emphasized since regeneration is the internal cleansing of the heart. Paul uses this same sense in Ephesians 5:26 when he speaks of Christ sanctifying His Church by the washing [loutro] of the water of the word. Regeneration (#3824, [paliggennesias] Titus 3:5), from palin (#3825), again, and genesis (#1078), generation, thus to generate again. The genitive case makes the phrase read the washing of [i.e., which is] regeneration (an appositional genitive). The new birth produces a new creature (John 3-5; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15). Renewing (#342, [anakainosis], Titus 3:5), from ana (#303), again or above, and kainos (#2537), new. Theres no better English verb than renew. The Spirit of God makes us new people when were born again. Paul calls the Spirits product the new man in Ephesians 2:15; 4:24; and Colossians 3:10. The first two verses contain kainos, the last one, interestingly, contains both Greek words: the new [neos] self who is being renewed [anakainoumenon] . . . . When youre born again, you have a new nature; the Spirit makes you a qualitatively new person.
QUESTIONS
1. Mark the phrase according to and formerly in Ephesians 2:1-5 what were we formerly? What did we walk according to? Compare this with Titus 3:3-7 and Titus 1:1-4, also marking the phrase according to. What are we now? 2. Christ sets us free from the desires and slavish control of sin. Have you been released? Can you remember a time you asked God to forgive your sins and cleanse your heart, when you opened your life to Christ and accepted His sacrifice on the cross as atonement for your sins? If you dont remember or youre not sure, you can pray that prayer today and know for certain that you have passed from death unto life. 3. If you are sure your sins are forgiven and are depending on Him alone for salvation, does your life reflect His glory? Do your deeds show the world that your life has been radically transformed by Him? 4. What areas of your life still need to change? Where has the Holy Spirit pointed His finger of conviction through this study of His Word?
Prayer
Lord God Almighty, I throw myself into Your arms today. Arms that are open wide to receive me! Arms that were nailed to a cross for me! Take me, mold me, make me more like Your Son. Confirm to my heart today that I am your child, a member of Your eternal family. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.

LESSON 25
Wheres That Verse?
Ephesians 1:13-14 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 Acts 2:16-18, 32-33, 37-39 Romans 8:14-17 John 7:37-39 1 John
QUESTIONS
1. Mark the Holy Spirit in verse 5 and the pronoun whom in verse 6 the same way (see the key word list for how to mark this key word). List what each Person of the Trinity does in salvation (Titus 3:4-6): 2. Read Titus 3:6,7 and the first two cross-references under Wheres That Verse? Who is your ticket to heaven if you have repented and believed? Who guarantees that youre going to get your inheritance in heaven and a brand-new body? 3. If we repent of our sins and believe the Gospel (Acts 2:37-39; Ephesians 1:13-14), what will we receive? According to Titus 3:6, in what manner is the Holy Spirit poured out on us? What is the aim of all of this according to verse 7? 4. In Titus 3:8, why does Paul want Titus to speak confidently? 5. Make a list of what you learn from marking the word deeds throughout Titus (1:16;2:7,14;3:1,5,8,14). Why should we engage in good deeds if were not saved on the basis of deeds (Titus 3:5)? What is the relationship between deeds and sound doctrine? 6. Read Pauls final instructions and greetings in Titus 3:12-15. What do they tell you about him and his relationships with people?
Greek Words
Richly (#4146, [plousios], Titus 3:6), lavishly, abundantly, excessively. The Holy Spirit is excessively poured out on those who are regenerated and renewed. The Spirit comes through Jesus Christ as mediator (see Acts 2:33). Being justified [#1344, [dikaiothentes], Titus 3:7) by grace. The aorist passive participle having been justified [declared righteous]is punctiliar action. Were justified by grace the moment we believe. At that instant were fellow heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). Accordingly, the Spirit is called the pledge of our inheritance (Ephesians 1:14).
Prayer
Lord God, make me eager to do good works, to lend a helping hand to those around me, putting their needs above my own. I want to be fruitful for Your kingdom! Please rescue me from my self-centeredness. Help me to represent You in this world so others will be drawn by Your love and lavish grace. Thank you, Lord, for grabbing my attention through this study. Continue Your work in me, making me into the image of Your Son. In Jesus holy name, Amen.

TITUS 1
Chapter Theme 1 Paul, a bond-servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago, 3 but at the proper time manifested, even His word, in the proclamation with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior, 4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. 5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion. 7 For the overseer must be above reproach as Gods steward, not selfwilled, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, 8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, selfcontrolled, 9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. 10 For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.

12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." 13 This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth. 15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.

TITUS 2
Chapter Theme 1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. 6 Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; 7 in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, 8 sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us. 9 Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect. 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. 15 These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you. 53

TITUS 3
Chapter Theme 1 Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, 2 to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men. 3 For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. 4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed God will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men. 9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10 Reject a factious man after a first and second warning, 11 knowing that such a man is perverted and is sinning, being self-condemned. 12 When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there.
54
13 Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them. 14 Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful. 15 All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.
