November 1st and 2nd, All Saints and All souls Days Dear Parishioners, November 1st the feast of All Saints is a holy day on which the church glorifies God for all his saints, known and unknown. We need these heavenly models of holiness. Saints are masterpieces of Gods work. Admiring the painting, we admire the artist. The praise and admiration of the painting does not detract anything from the praise and admiration we owe to the artist. On the contrary, when we admire and praise the painting, in reality we praise and admire the artist who in our case is God, who works always with the cooperation of humans. All Saints Day reminds each one of us that we are called to be a saint. It doesnt matter what we are doing, what we have done, or who we are. We are called to be saints. All the saints we honor today are women and men who had their priorities straight. They placed Christ and his Church at the center of their lives and everything else came together. They rebuffed evil in their lives and brought peace, hope and love to their age and time. They lived for God, not for this world. We each share their calling, mission, and life purpose. Saints are all around us, earthly models of holiness, women and men whose generous spirit reflects the Gospel call to love and serve God and others. Some do it by making the ordinary holy through a spirit of simplicity and humility. Some do it by showing extraordinary courage in sickness and adversity. Some do it by railing against injustice and working to bring equality and dignity to all. On November 2nd we remember and pray for all our relatives and friends who are deceased. We should remember as well to pray for all the dead for whom there is no one to pray. The Church has consistently encouraged the offering of prayers and Mass for the souls of the faithful departed in Purgatory. The faithful on earth can assist these souls in Purgatory in attaining the Beatific Vision through their good works and prayers. On this day, we ask God for mercy on those who have died. We pray for an ever deeper and abiding awareness of the steadfast love of God expressed through Jesus Christ. Let us, then, make the Opening prayer of All souls day Mass, our own: God, our creator and redeemer, by your power Christ conquered death and returned to you in glory. May all your people who have gone before us in faith share his victory and enjoy the vision of your glory forever. Amen.
