Nick Rutter Professor Pennell WRT 495 February 28, 2012 Portfolio Proposal I. Introduction A.

Project overview: My web portfolios metaphor will be a concert venue. The website will be a series of photoshopped images linked through hotspots. There will be no animation, maybe a couple of videos, no sound. The links will take the shape of posters on a brick wall at different points on the venue; the actual documents will be on the wall like posters in the work examples section. Each piece will be paired with a marked up copy of a draft showing revisions and audio commentary. Both images will be viewable in a separate tab. There will also be a section with actual posters I have designed, both for concerts and for other things. Webpages Entrance Homepage, has poster listing all contents, each individual thing can be clicked or the door can be clicked and each area of the interior can be clicked for each section Inside Clicking on enter or on the doors of Entrance will bring you to a view of the venue with a crowd and a view of all four sections of the site which are as follows: Stage (directly ahead): Video montage of concerts I have been involved with planning, along with a link to my music blog in the form of a magazine laying on the stage. Microphone links to an about me. Gallery (left wall) Compilation of posters I have made on one wall Paperwork (right wall) Compilation of documents, both final copies and marked up drafts, all with transcribed audio commentary. Located on the opposite wall (left of the stage) Technical Experience(soundboard set up somewhere near the stage, distinguished from everything else) Complete resume. Link located at the soundboard. B. Review of Literature: Self-sponsored: Short story: Breakup -Published in The Independent Scribe, have reflective essay on it from another class I can include in commentary. Posters for URI Musicians Guild Concerts Uncanny Concerts, Worst Christmas Ever Tommys Last Stand Unpacked Cover layouts for The Independent Scribe

Photos Castle Parachute Drop and Browsing -Published in Independent Scribe, was contacted about using one for writing website or something Complete resume. Academic: WRT 305 Travel writing piece: Between a Rock and a Tall Place -Lots of reflections on this piece as well, included it in end of class portfolio, overcame a lot in writing/editing it WRT 305 Travel writing blurb on Oliver Watson House -Displayed on actual house, quoted in Good 5 Cent Cigar Article. Lots of revision processes and reflection attached to it, also another piece based on my visit I can refer to ENG 280 Essay on Shakespeare: The Kings Speech: Rhetorical Devices in Henry IV -Recommended for essay contest, straightforward content WRT 235 Clubhouse Blog -Collection of postings on local artists and their albums, also an accompanying reflective blog attached I can dig up and use. WRT 302 Research Essay and Field Report on Rocky Horror Picture Show -Two different genres that are linked together, also have marked up copies and reflective materials on hand WRT 303 Editorial II. Plan A. Objectives and Methods Outside the webzone: -Recording and transcribing the audio for the reflective commentaries on the pieces -Editing the video montage of concerts -Scanning all the marked up drafts -Designing the five webpages -Taking photographs of another venue, staging a mock venue, or totally making it up in photoshop Inside the webzone: -Editing images to change to highlight section when the mouse is hovering above said section. -Finding a way to embed video on displayed image for stage -Finding a way to display PDFs as a manually controlled slide show with running commentary that gives cues when to turn pages and what to look for.

B. Timetable Priority of pages: Paperwork -Most important content-wise, most amount of documents, tricky technical-wise with audiocommentary and PDF slideshows. Stage -Tricky technical wise, second most important content wise because of the pathos of the About Me. Entrance -Most important to rhetorical display of site, need to create a new poster with all the links and need to ensure that they work. Gallery -Most of the pieces are already complete, maybe add some brief captions or audio blurbs. Technical Experience -All I need to do is link to my resume Itinerary: Before Spring Break: -Finish sketch of web pages and how I want to stage photos of venue During Spring Break: -Compile documents physically and digitally -Start skeleton work on webpage images -Sketch out video storyboard and start compiling clips After Spring Break: -During work shifts at the WRT Production Lab, give each image between a week/two weeks be completed. -Once the images are completed, start putting the pages into Dreamweaver, focusing on integrating the documents, audio files and embedding video. -Once sufficient progress has been made in the technically difficult parts in Dreamweaver, start cutting film on weekends using Windows Movie Maker. -During downtime, record audio reflective commentary and transcribe, maybe do in reverse order. Goal: To have a working site at least a week and a half before the dry-runs in class C. Materials and Equipment I have a very sufficient audio set-up at my house for recording purposes, as well as a high-quality digital camera and certain means of staging a venue scene with my role in the Musicians Guild.

I have the equivalent of open-source Photoshop on my laptop and access to scanners, computers, Dreamweaver, iMovie and Photoshop at the Writing Production Lab where I work. D. Personnel URI Musicians Guild staff can be used to stage a venue/crowd E. Facilities WRT Production Lab, Quinn Computer Lab F. Cost and budget No expenses projected, no budget needed. H. Expected results Best case scenario includes the video and audio commentary, both of which can be substituted with text equivalents, an About Me and Reflective essays respectively if the technology provides too difficult. But I at least expect to successfully stage a venue and edit the images and link them successfully. I. Feasibility There is a lot going on here, but broken down to the individual pages, its essentially just linking five photograph backgrounds with hotspots. There is enough time to attempt the technologically challenging things, but there is room to settle for more conventional means of conveying the same message. I only hope that linking to external documents is as simple programming as it is executing. III. Conclusion A. Summary of Key Points The metaphor of a stage venue is ambitious, yet feasible and gives the flexibility to settle on a less ambitious but simpler means of relaying the reflective portion of the site. I have a large combination of different genres of writing and art, both self-sponsored and academic at my disposal, much of which already shows process and reflection for each piece. I have more than enough experience using open-source Photoshop equivalent and the resources to stage and edit each webpage image. I have a rough timetable in place and a clear deadline set for myself to accomplish this portfolio. B. Request for Action With approval of this proposal, I can have a mapped out sketch of my intended project and the beginnings of web pages set up by the time we get back from Spring Break, giving me the momentum I need to finish this portfolio and the access to resources to help me overcome the obstacles I am anticipating.
