Corner Kick

A method of restarting the game when the goal goes over the goal line after last touching a defensive player. Kick is taken from the corner nearest where the ball went out.

Cleats

Shoes with plastic or rubber points on the bottom worn to provide traction.

Center Circle

A circle marking a 10 yard radius in the center of the field. Point where game is started or restarted.

Dribbling Down the Line

Running with the ball at a players feet and maintaining control.

A ball played parallel to the touch line and thrown toward the goal of the opposing team. This is the strategy used for a throw in. A kick for a personal foul. A team may score from this type of kick.

Free Kick

Field Player

Any player other than the goalie.

Goalkeeper

The player positioned directly in front of the goal. It is their job to prevent shots from getting into the net. The only player permitted to use their hands and arms during the game in the penalty area.

Goal

A goal is scored when the entire ball enters the net.

Hand Ball

Occurs when a player other than a goalie uses an arm or hand to control the ball. This results in a foul and a free kick.

Substitution

Throw In

A method of continuing play after the ball has crossed the touch line (sideline). The player must throw the ball in at the point where it went out of bounds. The player must have both feet on the ground and throw the ball with two hands over their head.

Touch Line

Sideline running the length of each side of the field.

Wall

A line of players protecting the goal from a free kick.

Definitions

Referee holds Yellow card or Red card above head. Advantage

Referee points out both his arms without blowing his whistle. Generally, a soccer referee will give approximately 3 seconds advantage before blowing his whistle for a foul Direct Free Kick

Indirect Free Kick

Referee raises his hand until ball is kicked and touched by another player. Goal Kick

Referee points to a corner of the goal area from which kick is to be taken. Goal Kick - Asst Ref

Assistant Referee points his flag at goal area from which kick is to be taken. Corner Kick

Referee points towards corner of the field from which kick is to be taken. Corner Kick Asst Ref

Assistant Referee points his flag at corner area from which kick is to be taken. Penalty Kick

Referee points to penalty mark from which kick is to be taken. Penalty Kick Asst Ref

Assistant Referee holds his flag straight up. Once the center referee notices, the AR makes quick, small waves with the flag and then goes to stand in front of the corner flag on the goal line to indicate a penalty kick.

Substitution

Assistant Referee signals to the referee by holding his flag overhead with both hands Throw In

Points in direction of attacking team that won the ball. (Which way the ball is going.) Throw In - Asst Ref

Assistant Referee stops running, points the flag straight up, and then lowers the flag to a 45 degree angle in the direction of the throw.

Offside

Referee blows whistle and raises his arm straight up reflect the AR's call. Keep arm raised until ball is kicked and touched by another player. Offside - Asst Ref

Assistant Referee points his flag straight up above his head to signal offside violation to the referee Offside Location

After Assistant Referee signals offside, he then shows location of infraction by holding his flag out in front of him -- flag held low indicates infraction occurred at side of field nearest to him, middle = center of field, high = far side of the field. Goal

Referee points towards the center circle -- the location of the next

kickoff -- and moves to the position for the next kick off. Goal - Asst Ref
