Mineral Identification Report

Do you think the steps below of the scientific method must be followed in order? Yes, because if you do not, you could already know your mineral when you make your hypothesis. 1. State the problem (the objective in the form of a question). 2. Gather information. 3. Form a hypothesis. 4. Experiment! 5. Record and analyze data. 6. Form a conclusion. 7. Communicate results.

Now that you are done researching and identifying your mineral fill-in the information for each step of the scientific method below. Then, number which step was first, second, etc. Objective: Use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. = Materials: -Mineral - Fracture -Streak Plate - Cleavage - Hardness - Color - Luster - Density Procedure: 1. Mr. Finan gave me a mineral. 5. Looked up my mineral 2. I filled out the sheet 6. Made some guesses 3. I went to the next table and guessed their minerals 7. Found out my mineral 4. Filled out the defections 8. Now I am doing this

1. State the problem. (Hint: Just write the objective above in the form of a question.) How can I use the scientific method to find out what my mineral is? 2. Gather information. (Look it up and/or ask an expert) *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 3. Form a hypothesis. Write a statement that tells what mineral you think yours is (your two guesses). I predict that my mineral with me will be either Tantalite or Thorite.

4. Start the experiment! (Follow the procedure.) 5. Record and analyze data. *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 6. Form a conclusion. This must be a paragraph that includes:
An answer to the problem (question 1). How your hypothesis compares with the actual results. (Was your hypothesis correct? If not, how close were you?) A description of your mineral and what helped you find the identification of your mineral the most.

Type your paragraph here In Science class, I used the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. The steps that I used are steak test, luster, hardness, cleavage, fracture, and density. Plus, I also used color to figure out my mineral. I made a guess of Thorite and that was the right one. My mineral was black, red, bronze, gold, brown, jagged, wood felling, brittle, sub metallic, and fractured. Moreover, I have the privilege of naming it peacock. What helped me the most was when Mr. Finan told me what the first letter of my mineral name. Also, Google images helped me find the right one when I was sure about the guesses that I had made and they were Thorite and Tantalite. To conclude, I hope we get to do this again later in the year.
