confusion and can ruin the experiment for you.

Do you think the steps below of the scientific method must be followed in order? Yes because It can cause

1. State the problem (the objective in the form of a question). 2. Gather information. 3. Form a hypothesis. 4. Experiment!

5. Record and analyze data. 6. Form a conclusion. 7. Communicate results.

Now that you are done researching and identifying your mineral fill-in the information for each step of the scientific method below. Then, number which step was first, second, etc. Objective: Use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. Materials: -Mineral -Streak Plate -Luster -Hardness 1. Mr. Finan gave me a mineral. 2. State the problem 3. Collect dat info 4. Hypothesis -Color -Density -Special Properties -Cleavage/Fracture 5. Experiment 6. Record & analyze data 7. Conclusion 8. Communicate results.

Procedure:

1. State the problem. (Hint: Just write the objective above in the form of a question.) How can I use the scientific method to found out what my mineral is? 2. Gather information. (Look it up and/or ask an expert) I went onto http://www.minerals.net/gemstone/lapis_lazuli_gemstone.asp http://www.minerals.net/mineral/azurite.aspx x *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 3. Form a hypothesis. Write a statement that tells what mineral you think yours is (your two guesses). I predict that my mineral will either by lapis lazuli, or azurite.

4. Start the experiment! (Follow the procedure.) 5. Record and analyze data. *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 6. Form a conclusion. This must be a paragraph that includes:
An answer to the problem (question 1). How your hypothesis compares with the actual results. (Was your hypothesis correct? If not, how close were you?) A description of your mineral and what helped you find the identification of your mineral the most.

Mystery Mineral
Mr. Finan gave us a mineral one day, but we didn't know what it was. So, I used the scientific method. First, I need to collect info by observation first, and then I collect even more with resources. Then, I form a hypothesis. Finally, as the last step, Mr. Finan then reveals what

the mineral is, and I form a quick and easy conclusion. So, following this procedure, my hypothesis was lapis lazuli at first. However, after I was given a hint by Mr. Finan, I soon found out that it was azurite. Later, sure enough, I was correct. My mineral is very decorative and has lots of interesting details. One thing about it is that it is a very dark blue with a bit of sub-metallic luster to it, but barely any. However, compared to all of the other minerals, it looks super clean with no dust or dirt on it. Also, on the Mohs Hardness Scale, its hardness was 6.5. Another thing is that my mineral had medium density. Plus, according to a few websites, my mineral is fluorescent. Another thing is that my mineral is inside a big grey rock (but I don't know what minerals it was made of). You see, the tiny blue chunks inside of the grey rock were my mineral, although they were super tiny. It was about as small as the tip of a pencil. The thing that helped me the most was color and streak. There are barely any minerals that are blue, so that really filtered it out for me. All in all though, the Mystery Mineral project was super fun, and I hope to do something like it again.

7. Communicate your results. Post this report and your Data Sheet where people can see it !
