Introduction to Simulation
An office will be simulated involving activities of: prototype order processing. The office environment will include telephone interruptions and meetings. A "day" will be 1 hour (60 minutes).

Situation
Company has been coming "under fire" from their customers due to long delivery time and errors in their prototype orders. In addition, manufacturing is upset with the errors in the build information (drawings, BOMs and orders) leading to delays in manufacturing and error in the product. Lastly, management is upset because of the errors and missing information leading to delays in getting paid for the work done. The organisation has attribute the source of errors to short-comings in the front office operations.

Introduction to Simulation
Participants will assume the roles of: Manager, Customer A, Customer B, Sales, Mail Courier, Product Planner, Prototype Personnel, Engineer, Manufacturing Detroit and Manufacturing Chicago. Other participants will serve as Value Stream Mappers (2-4). Any additional participants will serve the role as "Observers". Performance will be measured at the end of each "day", including: Lead Time, Throughput, Percent Complete and Accurate and Productivity.

Round 1 De-brief
Discuss what happened. What did the performance measures tell you? What do the Value Stream Maps tell you? Relate to real world experiences. The information obtained in Round 1 will serve as a baseline for our performance. We will re-calculate these measures after each round, and compare the results. Hopefully, we will see improvements each round.

Round 2 of Simulation
Develop ideas that can be implemented relating to the concepts covered:

Standardised Work Quality at the Source Workplace Organisation Visual Controls and Management People Involvement Batch Reduction

No major Information Technology solutions will be permitted. You will have approximately 10 minutes to agree on specific improvements and 30 minutes to implement the changes agreed upon.

Pull Systems Cellular / Teaming concepts Equipment Reliability Levelling, Management Timeframe & Takt Image
