DA Encourages Farmers to Shift To Organic Farming For health Reasons By Quirico M. Gorpido,Jr.

Maasin City, Southern Leyte-The ProvincialAgriculturistOffice (PAO) here is strongly encouraging famers province-wide to shift to organic f arming for health reasons.

This was the essence of a recent interview with Provincial Agriculturist Marina Espina Gador.

She disclosed that the DA program is anchored on a law RA10068 launched in Metro Manila DA Main office last year, which was also known as Organic Agriculture Act of 2010.

The implementation of this organic agriculture act is supposed to be simultaneous nationwide, she averred. However, dueto theformulation of rules and regulations as the basis for the laws implementing guidelines, shesaid, the aforesaid program has started to be implemented onlysometime in 2012.

Government agencies involved in this program in the dessimination drive of organic agriculture are DOH, DTI, DAR, DENR, DepEd, DILG, Maasin Federation of Farmers and the NGOs.

Gador implied the organic agriculture program is also implemented in other provinces of the country so that all the Filipino farmers should know the importance of shifting from decades-long adaption/useof inorganic farming(the use of chemical fertilizers and chemical sprays on plants)to organic farming or natural farming(the use of natural fertilizers and natural pesticides.)

From series of scientific studies it was discovered that chemical fertilizers, which, in the long years of use would make thefarm soil acidic, and the chemical pesticides spray would badly affect the surrounding environment, animals andhuman health in the long run.

For those alsowho constantly patronize the buying and eating of vegetables and fruits in the market for years, that were regularly sprayed with chemical pesticides, were found to be potentially vulnerable to suffer from other diseases, not common among consumers/eaters of natural farm products.

One of thebad effects of consuming inorganic foods (plants grown with chemical fertilizers and sprayed with chemical pesticides) is that itwill shorten mans life span. Other adverse effect of the aforesaid chemicals use in inorganic farming is that it contributed to the worsening of climate change affecting all nations of the earth, she stressed.

In the USA a male patient was reportedly diagnosed to have cancer by a doctor. He was advised to concentrate on eating only organic plant foods(vegetables, fruits, rootcrops, legumes, spices, other edible plants that are free from chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticidessprays).By following strictly the doctors advice he gradually recover from his dreaded disease.

Another case in point is a female patient who suffered from a kind of skin disease. After consulting a skin specialist, she was advised, aside from her medications, to focus on eating only organic plant foods, organic animal meat (feed only by natural feeds available in the surrounding environment and devoid of any processed feeds).By adhering to the doctors advice she gradually gain recovery of her skin problem.

Phasing out the use of these farm chemicals and their kind would greatly contribute to the mitigation of climate change, she pointed out.

Gador further informed that her office and some LGUs in the province have conducted seminars to farmers/planters in some municipalities. Although she cannot give the estimated percentage of those who attended to such new approach in natural farming, which was really what our forefathers were originally practicing.

Howeve, sheadmitted that this new approach in natural farming cannot be carried out abruptly, but gradually.

Furthermore, she divulged that farmers attending seminars on organic agriculture have been taught of natural substitutes to chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides. Like composting of different kinds of dead biodegradable plants, waste manure, and their kind as organic fertilizer.

For natural sprays(repellant)are mixture of juices from edible and non-edible plants that have bitter, bad and pungent odors like chili, garlic, tubli, ginger, madre de cacao, atis, ahito, dulaw, hagonoy, panyawan, cetronela and neem.

And for attractant (padugok) of insects and pests are: one gallon of coco vinegar sans tungog, one kilo of sugar and one half gallon of water. Mix it all. Then put the mixture inside the uncovered plastic bag and hang it in strategic location inside your farm so that the insects/pests will gather and feast on It until they get intoxicated.

Moreover, Gador said that her office is inspiring and admonishing all households, not only in SouthernLeyte but also in other provinces to plant their respective backyards and vacant lots with all kinds of fruits, vegetables, legumes,, spices, rootcrops and other edibles plants for family consumptions. This is to make sure that what they are eating comes from the natural farming, she assured.Of course they can sell their surplus yields to the public.

The Provincial Agriculturist is hopeful that those farmers/planters who undergone series of seminars in organic agriculture in some municipalities of this province will apply/practice in their respective farms what they have learned to start realizing the goal of the law to achieve good health for all Filipino consumers including the malnourished.(Quirico M.
