QuantumEraserbasedonthedoubleslitexperimentintheMay2007issueofScientificAmerican.The
purposeofthistutorialistoshowthequantummathbehindthelaserdemonstrationsillustratedin
thisarticle.
HillmerandKwiatcreatedthedoublesliteffectbyilluminatingathinwirewithalaserbeam.They
carriedoutanumberofdemonstrationswithlaserlightandpolarizingfilmsusinganexperimental
setupthateffectivelyisasshownschematicallybelow.
Assuming(initially)infinitesimallythinslits,thephotonwavefunctionattheslitscreenisan
entangledsuperpositionofbeingatslit1withverticalpolarizationandslit2withpolarizationatan
angleurelativetothevertical.Thisentanglementprovideswhichwayinformationifuisnotequalto
0and,therefore,hasanimportanteffectonthediffractionpattern.

Thisstateisprojectedonto|andpbecausea|orientedpolarizer(eraser)precedesthedetection
screenandbecauseadiffractionpatternisactuallythemomentumdistributionofthescattered
photons.Inotherwords,positionismeasuredattheslitscreenandmomentumismeasuredatthe
