The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) Workers Legal Fund was established October 2013 by a group of determined bus drivers after attending an Employment Rights 101 class presented by labor attorney, Danielle Obiorah. The employees learned that they needed to mobilize and pool their finances to hire an attorney to address critical issues involving pay, working conditions, harassment, etc. 2. What are the goals of the DSCD Workers Legal Fund? • Provide financial legal assistance and support for legal cases that address issues and concerns of the workers of the DeKalb County School District. • Provide educational classes, projects and programs to improve the knowledge of the workers of the DeKalb County School District. 3. How does the DCSD Workers Legal Fund benefit members? The workers legal fund will provides legal assistance to address critical issues that affect workers’ pay, working conditions, workers’ rights, etc. 4. What are the major complaints the workers have against the DeKalb County School District? • No raises for over 5-8 years • Pay cuts • Poor working conditions • Forced to work without pay on personal time • Fight acts of discrimination, retaliation, intimidation, and harassment • Tampering with time sheets • Unfair wage calculation that robs workers of base pay for hours worked • Safety issues • Elimination of bus monitors from buses transporting special needs children • Overcrowded buses • Poor communication • Lack of allowance for drivers with special needs • Threats of privatization from the district • History of a 6 percent pay cut and reduced benefit Mission – Safety of our children and justice for the workers to ensure quality education
