At-A-Glance

Intelligent Storage Networking

Cisco MDS 9000 Family SAN-OS Software The Cisco MDS 9000 Family SAN-OS is the underlying system software that powers the award-winning Cisco MDS 9000 Family. SAN-OS provides many unique and powerful standards-based features that simplify the configuration, provisioning and ongoing management of MDS-based SAN solutions. In addition to supporting Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP), SAN-OS supports IBMFibre Connection (FICON), Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI), and Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) in a single platform allowing customers to better utilizing existing enterprise resources, thereby lowering costs. Additionally, Cisco MDS 9000 Family switches are the first SAN switches on the market with Virtual SAN (VSAN) support built into the switch hardware. VSAN capabilities allow the SAN-OS to logically divide a large physical fabric into separate, isolated environments to improve Fibre Channel SAN scalability, availability, manageability, and network security. Cisco MDS 9000 Family Software License Packages In addition to the unique software feature included in the base switch configuration, Cisco offers an advanced set of software features logically grouped in software license packages. Enterprise License Package This package includes advanced traffic management and advanced security features recommended for enterprise class SANs such as Inter-VSAN Routing, Quality of Service, Extended Credits, and Hardware Enforced LUN Zoning. SAN Extension over IP The Cisco MDS 9000 Family SAN Extension over IP package provides an integrated, cost-effective, and reliable business continuance solution for connecting Fibre Channel SANs across an existing IP infrastructure. The package delivers FCIP Data Compression for more efficient WAN bandwidth utilization, FCIP Write Acceleration for improved application performance, FCIP Tape Acceleration for improved resources utilization, and SAN extension tuning for optimization. Mainframe Package The Cisco MDS 9000 Family Mainframe package is acomprehensive collection of features required for using theCisco MDS 9000 Family switches in mainframe storage networks. With the Mainframe package, the Cisco MDS 9000 Family has the capability to simultaneously support the Fibre

Channel, iSCSI, FCIP and FICON protocols allowing SAN users to standardize on one vendor to support their entire SAN environment. FICON VSAN support is provided to help ensure that there is true hardware-based separation of FICON and open systems. Switch cascading, fabric binding, and intermixing also are included in this package. Fabric Manager Server (FMS) The Cisco Fabric Manager Server (FMS) package extends thefeatures and functionality in Cisco Fabric Manager by providing historical performance monitoring for network traffic hot-spot analysis, centralized management services, and advanced application integration. Storage Services Enabler (SSE) When used with the Cisco MDS 9000 Storage Services Module (SSM) the Cisco MDS 9000 Storage Services Enabler (SSE) package provides the underlying infrastructure and programmatic interface to enable intelligent fabric applications such as Network-Accelarated Serverless Backup for non-disruptive data replication, NetworkAssisted storage applications for heterogeneous data replication, and Network-Hosted applications such as storage virtualization for heterogeneous volume management. Cisco Fabric Manager Software Cisco Fabric Manager, included at no charge with every Cisco MDS9000 Family switch, is a responsive, easy-to-use, Web-based application that simplifies the management of Cisco MDS 9000 Family switches. With the Cisco Fabric Manager intuitive GUI, storage administrators can compare switch configurations side by side, perform configuration policy checks across Cisco MDS 9000 Family switches, set alarm thresholds for reporting into third-party fault-management applications, and view individual device and aggregate statistics in real time to simplify the management of their storage environment.

Industry Leading Scalability and Performance The MDS 9500 Director series delivers the industrys highest port density, highest performance director-class switch supporting up to 528 ports in a single chassis with optional 1/2/4-Gbps and 10-Gbps Fibre Channel modules. Business ContinuityCisco offers the broadest range of business continuity solutions delivering Fibre Channel, FCIP and iSCSI protocols in a single integrated system allowing cost-effective, high-performance storage transport over IP, Wide Area and Metropolitan Area Networks. Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)With integrated GUI-based SAN management and network diagnostics included in every switch, the MDS 9000 Family delivers improved storage administrator productivity, faster problem resolution, and reduced service costs. Investment ProtectionThe MDS 9000 Family shares acommon architectural framework and offers interchangeable, backward- and forward-compatible switching modules across the entire family to protect existing SAN investments and provide a smooth upgrade path to support future growth. Simplified, Secure InfrastructureAdvance features such as virtual storage area networks (VSANs) and Inter-VSAN routing (IVR) allow administrators to logically and functionally partition a single physical SAN fabric or switch into multiple VSANs, each with its own security policies and fabric services. Open Platform for Intelligent Storage Applications TheMDS 9000 Family provides the intelligent hardwarebased services for hosting or accelerating applications for data migration, data replication, serverless backup, networkhosted volume management, and more.
