STORY: The United Nations Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson has today (26th October) held discussions with Somali President H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, in a visit to the country. DSG Eliasson arrived in Mogadishu this morning, to assess the progress made and challenges faced in stabilizing Somalia after 22 years of conflict. Speaking after the meeting, H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, described the Mr. Eliasson visit as yet another step that re-affirms the confidence that the UN has in Somalia. We have realized the level of commitment that the United Nations has to Somalia, to the new Somalia. The United Nations has been with Somalia Somali people for over 20 years now. The UN was the guarantor and the protector of the Somali unity and sovereignty in the last 20 years, he said. The President added that the time has come for Somalia to rise up to the challenge and take charge of its own institutions. This is the time now, the Somali state is back, we are sovereign, recognized by the international community. We are standing for the protection and we are going to take over the responsibility and the burden from the UN. This is the time

we stand here with the UN to move forward to have a united and stable Somalia, Insha Allah The UN deputy Secretary General pledged continued support of the UN to the Somali government as the country embarks on rebuilding its infrastructure and institutions following decades of war. For me to be back here is a very important moment and the meetings that we have had today think show the solidarity that is felt from many parts of the world to Somalias government, the leadership and Parliament. We hope very much that we will be able to contribute to increased security in the country both through the presence of international troops but also by strengthening the Somali National Army and Security Forces, said Eliasson who last visited Somalia in 1992, when he was Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs. Mr. Eliasson together with the UN delegation visited the UN Country Team Offices in Mogadishu, the scene of the June 19th 2013 al Shabaab attack which killed 15 people including one UN International staff. He noted that such acts of terrorism reaffirm the need for joint action with the Somali government, to ensure that peace and stability prevail. What they want is to make us fearful and make us pull back and make us not achieve what we intended to do and thats why we should paradoxically use this occasion and honor those who died by doing our job better than ever, in a unified way together with our Somali friends, he asserted. He also held meetings with several government officials including the Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon and the Speaker of the Somali Parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari. Somalia has been heavily supported by the United Nations on its journey to recovery after 22 years of civil war. The UN has supported the Somali transition that saw the current Federal Government elected into power just over a year ago and continues to support processes towards ensuring security and re-building the countrys institutions.
