PROJECT INFORMATION: PLEASE DESCRIBE PROJECT FOR WHICH FUNDS ARE REQUESTED AND SUBSTANTIATE NEED FOR PROJECT. PLEASE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

Purpose of Organization:

Lamar-Milledge Media Center is part of Lamar-Milledge Elementary School of the Richmond County Board of Education. The purpose of the media center is to serve as a learning ground for all students. It is the hub of technology, books, other resources and research. Although it is not an organization, the media center plays an important role in the securing of a well-rounded education for the 21st century learners.

Critical Need to be addressed by the Project:

The Lamar-Milledge Media Center is lacking in the area of ebooks for the students. The 21st Century Learner must be exposed to the technology that is becoming the driving force in education and everyday life. Lamar-Milledge Media Center houses 30 Nook ereaders which all have 0-3 books installed. The students in all grade levels could be utilizing this innovative format for reading, but with adequate materials available, they are useless.

Specific Objective:

Lamar-Milledge Media Center will provide students with access to at least 20 ebooks per grade level on various reading levels by February 2014.

Profile of Client Group Served (Who and How Many):

The project will serve the student body of Lamar-Milledge Elementary School, grades kindergarten through fifth for a total of 440 students. These students are from an innercity environment with little to no use of technology in the home. The incomes on the average are in the lower bracket.

MISCELLANEOUS

Please list other funding support (in-hand and pending), including sources and amounts. Wesley Methodist Church has committed to donate $300 dollars towards the replacing of chargers and purchasing ebooks for the Nooks.

Does your organization utilize volunteers? If so, how many and in what capacity? Volunteers from Wesley Methodist Church are utilized to assist in the media center with the shelving of books, helping students locate books in Destiny, checking books in/out, and individually tutoring students. At this present time there are 52 volunteers from this church which are on a rotating schedule. Not all of the volunteers work in the media center. There are six volunteers that rotate in the media center.
