Laboratory Report

Aim: To investigate how to investigate the effect temperature, detergent and alcohol has on the

plasma permeability of beetroot.

Methods and Materials:

Beetroot was pre-cut with cork borer , the length of each pieces was 1 cm. Then 7 pieces of beetroot was placed in test tubes. One of the piece was placed in distilled water, with no treatment for control. The second piece of beetroot was placed into Industrial detergent ( Teepol) , then after one minute was rinse in water and placed in 10 ml of distilled water. The third piece was placed in ethanol for 1 minute also , and then rinsed off in water and placed in 10 ml of distilled water. The fourth piece was placed in test tube and then on ice , the fifth piece was put in 30C water bath , another 2 pieces was put in 50C and 70C water bath. Then all this pieces of beetroot was left for one minute , then was taken off and placed in 10ml distilled water for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes the contenst was mixed and the color assessed. To define the color was used colorimeter. Each liquid from beetroot was placed in cuvette and then placed in colorimeter, the result was noticed.

Results:

The different amount of colour changes was recorder. The data over shown in Table 1. The results was compared and shown clearly at the Graph 1.

Discussion:

The purpose of a cell membrane is to control the transport of substances moving into and out of a cell. The membrane is an extremely thin, which is partially permeable. It consists mostly of lipids and proteins. The lipids found in cell membranes belong to a class known as triglycerides. The membrane is mostly composed of phospholipid molecules. Despite their many differences in appearance and function, all cells have a surrounding membrane (called the plasma membrane) . All cells host a variety of chemical reactions that enable them to grow, produce energy, and eliminate waste. (2008 .Cell Structure and differentiation. Newcastle Foundation Handbook). So in this experiment was observed how effect the different temperature and chemicals substances on the beetroot membrane. The biggest differences between colour in the control liquid , which is 0.0 and liquid with beetroot , which was placed in 70C and beetroot from ethanol. Its mean that the higher temperature and ethanol destroy the plasma membrane of plants very well. However industrial detergent , such as teepol protect plants membrane and the level of colour even lower than in control liquid.

Conclusion:

To investigate the effect temperature, detergent and alcohol has on the plasma permeability of beetroot was successful. The data, which was recorded, show that the ethanol and higher temperature destroy the plasma membrane much better than other substances.
