Ref. CPNM(HDT)'s message reproduced below, Fuel gas was sampled at the following points. 1. HDTU Furnace, 2. CPP Supplementary Firing Fuel Gas Line. 3. SDU Fuel Gas KOD, 4. Laboratory The results are as under. COMPONENT Hydrogen Nitrogen Methane Ethane Ethylene Propane i-Butane n-Butane i-Pentane n-Pentane C5=&+ % Vol. (1) 23.6 0.17 52.67 15.36 2.50 1.04 0.10 0.19 0.42 0.55 3.38 %Vol. (2) 49.16 0.12 34.41 9.89 1.59 1.45 0.07 0.13 0.32 0.41 2.46 %Vol. (3) 79.71 0.00 4.84 2.67 0.00 12.16 0.23 0.19 0.06 0.00 0.13 %Vol. (4) 80.14 0.00 4.32 2.44 0.00 12.46 0.22 0.18 0.06 0.00 0.18
The results are self evident. We request the concerned persons/depts/sections to restore normal fuel gas supply to laboratory so that analyticals jobs requiring use of Bunsen / Meeker burners can be carried out.

After receiving the Breaking News e-mail from CQCM, the sender advised HDTU Shift-InChrages to monitor hydrogen purging to FG header. During the last few days w.e.f 01.02.2006, Sweet gas average generation ex-HDTU/ATU is around 36000 Kg/day and surplus hydrogen not consumed in the reaction is around 1350 Kg/day on an average which goes to FG header. Both Sweet gas and surplus hydrogen goes through the same header ( i.e Fuel Gas header ) supplying fuel gas to HDT furnace which consumes around 4250
Kg/day then the rest 36900 Kg/day mixture of hydrogen + sweet gas goes to Main FG header ex-HDTU. It can be seen from above that hydrogen content is around 3.75 % wt. in FG header exHDTU/ATU. This is for your information please. L.W Khongwir CPNM

It is unlikely that such large volume of H2 should be present in the FG header. However the matter needs to be further investigated for necessary correction. Source of Hydrogen in Fuel Gas is from WHFU and HDT. Average off gas from WHFU is around 730 Kg/hr having a Hydrogen content of around 20%w while from HDT compressor the hydrogen ( 100 % ) to FG header is around 50-70 Kg/hr during normal operation, which goes up during change of mode HSD-Kero. In view of what has been observed at Lab end, please arrange to test FG sample from HDT / WHFU ends to further examine the source and take necessary corrective action. G Dasgupta

The situation has further worsened. Hydrogen content has been found to be about 92 % vol from 05/02/06 evening. Laboratory burners could not be lit. As a result, tests involving burner could not be performed. A K Chakravorty

BREAKING NEWS
From 31/01/06 afternoon it has been observed that the pressure of the Gas Holder located at QC Laboratory increased from 6-7 psi to above 15 psi. The burners in the laboratory were found to emit colourless flame. The gas was analysed and was found to contain about 90% vol Hydrogen. Such a high level of Hydrogen is not desirable in the fuel gas system. Concerned authority is hereby requested to take immediate action to bring down Hydrogen Content of Fuel gas.
