Mock1 Jessica Mock Professor Gutierrez UL 100 27 October 2013 Evaluation of Sources: Teen Suicide American Academy of Child

and Adolescent Psychiatry. Teen Suicide. American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, July 2013. Web. 25 Oct. 2013. 1. Relevancy: This website article gives background information and statistics on teen suicide. It also gives signs of depression and warning signs to look for if an individual is seriously considering committing suicide. 2. Accuracy: I like this website because included in the text are links to other articles related to the topic with additional information. At the end, there are also two books available to purchase. This shows me that the publishers are serious about their website and the topic at hand. 3. Currency: This article was published in July of 2013 so the information provided is current and accurate. 4. Authority: At the bottom of the website it says, The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) represents over 8,500 child and adolescent psychiatrists who are physicians with at least five years of additional training beyond medical school in general (adult) and child and adolescent psychiatry. To me, this shows all the credibility needed for me to know the information provided in this article is accurate. 5. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to educate and inform any type of audience about suicide and how to prevent it from happening.

Mock2 6. Rating: I rate this website a 5 because it provides a great amount of information, it is all credible, and it gives two books to purchase if I wanted to obtain more information about the topic. American Psychological Association. Teen Suicide is Preventable. American Psychological Association, 2013. Web. 25 Oct. 2013. 1. Relevancy: This website gives basic background information pertaining to suicide occurring with individuals ranging from ages 15-24. It also lists different risk factors that may emerge with a person who is likely to commit suicide. 2. Accuracy: The fact that this website is published through the American Psychological Association shows me that the information given is accurate. 3. Currency: This website has a copyright year of 2013; therefore, this source is very up-todate. Because this source is so current, the information is especially relevant. Though there is data given that is dated clear back to 2003, the rest of the information provided is mostly current. 4. Authority: The authors responsible for this article have background knowledge and experience in the field of Psychology; therefore, they know a great deal about the human mind and how it all works. I trust that the information given on this website is accurate and correct. 5. Purpose: The purpose of this website is to educate anyone and every one of the risks of suicide and to provide different methods of help if someone or a loved one is in need. This is also a good website to visit if someone is unsure of a loved ones unusual activities.

Mock3 6. Rating: I rate this website a 4 because it gives a lot of great information on my chosen topic and it is credible. I also like it because it provides different ways for an individual to seek help. One thing I think this website can improve on is the length of the article. It is only one page long and I wish the authors would elaborate more on the topic because the information given is very knowledgeable. Greenman, Craig. Expression and Survival: An Esthetic Approach to the Problem of Suicide. New Castle, UK: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2008. Print. 1. Relevancy: This book gives very little background information on suicide and expresses the great meaning of life. It also shows the connection between suicide and philosophical ideas. For example, the question of why when a loved one ends their own life. Ethical and moral views on suicide are taken into consideration in this book as well. Though this book would be an interesting read, I dont think it would be appropriate for a research paper because there is not a lot of material included that would inform the reader on the subject. 2. Accuracy: The author seems to know a lot about philosophy and his field of study, but that does not help me much because that is not the type of information I am needing in order to do my research. 3. Currency: This book was published in 2008; therefore, it is 5 years old. This is only one year shy of not being considered current. It would be a good idea to find something more up to date. 4. Authority: The author is an Assistant Professor of Humanities at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire. I feel that it would be better if his focus of study were Psychology or

Mock4 Medicine because the effects of suicide deal with the brain and different medical disorders. 5. Purpose: The purpose of this book is to look at the issue of suicide at different viewpoints. 6. Rating: For this research topic, I would rate this book a 2 because it is 5 years old and the information would not be useful in a research paper. Jennifer, Corbett D. "Study Tracks Drug-Related Teen Suicides." Wall Street Journal. Feb 09 2011. ProQuest. Web. 25 Oct. 2013. 1. Relevancy: This source states facts about drug-related incidents tied to suicide attempts. This article also discusses the different factors involved in triggering suicidal thoughts and actions and mentions seasonal depression. Though the information is quite randomly placed throughout the article, this source is relevant to my topic and does provide useful information. 2. Accuracy: In the abstract, the following statistic is given: The study, conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, found an average of 178,423 ER visits a year from 2004 to 2008 for drug-related suicide attempts involving people age 12 or older. Though this is good information, it would be better if it were more current. The fact that the study was conducted through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration makes this source more accurate. 3. Currency: This article was written only two years ago so it is still pretty up-to-date. The information is still relevant and not much, if any, information has changed about teen suicide in the past two years.

Mock5 4. Authority: No information is given about the author so that makes me think she does not have the experience or credentials to write a professional article over this topic. 5. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to inform the audience of seasonal depression and the effect of drug use on suicidal thoughts and attempts. The author mainly talks about young adolescence; therefore, I believe this is her audience. 6. Rating: I give this source a 2 because it does have many facts about suicide, but it is hard to decide if they are completely accurate. The study discussed is also from 2004 to 2008 and I wish it were more current. King, Keith A., Catherine M. Strunk, and Michael T. Sorter. "Preliminary Effectiveness of Surviving the Teens Suicide Prevention and Depression Awareness Program on Adolescents' Suicidality and Self-Efficacy in Performing Help-Seeking Behaviors." Journal of School Health 81.9 (2011): 581-590. Professional Development Collection. Web. 25 Oct. 2013. 1. Relevancy: This article is written to show the connection between depression and thoughts of suicide in individuals ages 15-24 years. A study was done with 1,030 students participating. Surveys were given as pretests and posttests and a 3 month follow up was required. The individuals want to seek help increased at the time of the follow up and their activities due to feeling sad decreased. 2. Accuracy: A list of references is given at the end of this article and each authors credentials are listed. Keith King even has a Ph.D. This source, in my opinion, is very accurate. 3. Currency: This article was written in 2013 so the information provided is very current and accurate.

Mock6 4. Authority: Two of the authors work in Psychiatry and the other author has a Ph.D. in Health Promotions. Both of these subjects relate well with teen suicide and I trust that the authors have a great deal of knowledge on this topic. 5. Purpose: The purpose of this article and study is to let young adolescence know that there is help out there and there is always a way out. 6. Rating: I give this source a 5 because the authors are extremely credible, a study is involved, and there are different sections broken up in the article such as background, method, results, and discussion. With these sections involved, it allows for much more information to be given. Schusterbauer, Emily. Teen Suicide. Detroit, MI: Greenhaven Press, 2009. Print. 1. Relevancy: This book talks about the different factors that may increase teen suicide risk. Some of these factors are bullying, substance use, and poor body image. 2. Accuracy: Each chapter involves information from a variety of sources and gives a brief description of each source at the beginning of the chapter to show the sources credibility. For example, the first chapter includes information from Michelle Ana Moskos, Jennifer Achilles, and Doug Gray. The description tells that Moskos works for the Utah Department of Health, the American Association of Suicidology, and the National Suicide Prevention Resource Center as a consulting epidemiologist, Achilles was a study coordinator for the Utah Youth Suicide Study, and Gray works as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Utah School of Medicine and is a child and developmental psychiatrist. 3. Currency: This book was published four years ago so it is still somewhat current, but I could still try to find a book that is more recent for better information.

Mock7 4. Authority: Looking at the different sources for each chapter, almost all of the individuals listed have outstanding credentials considering the topic at hand. I trust that the information in this book is correct. 5. Purpose: The purpose of this book is to allow the reader to become familiar with the different issues one might be going through when seriously considering suicide. It can also allow people to open their eyes and realize that even the littlest of comments can bring someone down immensely. 6. Rating: This book has great information by knowledgeable sources and was published within the last 5 years. I give this book a 5.
