Paws to Read program grows in popularity
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The most popular dog with the
kids in Medford Township may
very well be Ocho.
A 3-year-old German Shepherd,
Ocho is more than just an ordi-
nary dog. He is a registered thera-
py dog who spends an hour on
Thursdays at Pinelands Library.
The Paws to Read program is
an alternative approach to help-
ing kids improve their reading
skills. At Pinelands Library, chil-
dren can register for 15-minute
sessions with Ocho and read one
of their favorite books.
The kids love it, Rick
Yankosky, a librarian who works
with Paws to Read, said. They
get to read to an un-judging audi-
ence. The dog is an attentive lis-
tener.
The reason Paws to Read works
so well is that the children, thanks
to the calming presence of Ocho,
are able to relax and read in a
pressure-free setting.
Yankosky said Ocho was origi-
nally meant to be a seeing-eye dog.
However, he had some problems
with being skittish.
So one day, Ochos owner, Mary
Hickey, went to the library and
proposed the idea of starting
Paws to Read.
Since the program was
launched last year, it has become
increasingly popular. Yankosky
said that the kids love Ocho and
feel extremely comfortable
around him.
Ocho is just a real friendly
German Shepherd, he said.
Even kids who are fearful of
dogs will maybe just read to him
the first time. The next time they
come back, theyre hugging the
dog and petting him.
The purpose of Paws to Read
isnt to teach kids how to read. In-
stead, the program is meant to
help children become better read-
ers, regardless of their age level.
Overall, the program has been
a success and not just at
Pinelands Library. Many libraries
around across the country have
some form of a Paws to Read pro-
gram. Pinelands, like many li-
braries across the country, cite its
program as helping children im-
prove their literacy level.
The success of these programs
has caused their popularity to ex-
plode and for libraries to start
their own programs.
Yankosky said that kids of any
reading level can register for the
program. The library has had
kids ages 5 to 12 take part in the
program.
The program and Ochos popu-
larity has exploded so much that
the library has a waiting list. The
programs sessions are 15 minutes
long, with four sessions per day.
Because the program only takes
place a couple times a month, it
had led to a high demand from
kids in the township.
You only have four shots
per session, Yankosky said. A
lot of times its repeat people. A
lot of times weve had kids come
to the library, see it and say Wow,
what is that? and then sign up for
it.
Yankosky also revealed that the
library may soon add another dog
to its Paws to Read lineup some-
time in the near future.
Anyone who wishes to sign up
their child for Paws to Read must
register in advance. This can be
done at the library in person or on
the librarys website at
www.bcls.lib.nj.us/pinelands.

The Sun
With a lot of focus in recent years on
school safety, security and violence, many
districts have put less of an emphasis on
drug and alcohol abuse.
However, that is not the case in Medford,
where the Medford Public Schools and
Shawnee High School decided to make
drug and alcohol abuse the central topic
during Violence Awareness Week from
Oct. 21-25.
At Shawnee, Assistant Principal Ben
Lamberson and Heidi Krihak, Shawnees
substance awareness coordinator, held a
parents meeting to help inform them of the
reality of drugs and alcohol in schools.
Lamberson made a point that his goal
wasnt to scare parents. He emphasized the
schools effort in trying to help kids who
have a substance abuse problem.
This isnt just an issue at Shawnee High
School, he said. This is an issue across
the state. We dont want to pretend its not
an issue.
Throughout the week, students at
Shawnee worked on projects and partici-
pated in events to help promote saying no
to drugs and alcohol. Lamberson showed a
PSA made by students that played on the
schools television network during the
week.
In addition, Shawnee High School fea-
tured students as part of a Character
Counts program. School administration
and staff identified kids who make
Shawnee a better place.
The goal is promote character in school
so students may be swayed more toward
those attributes.
Preventing drug and alcohol abuse for
students goes beyond these programs and
even beyond school walls. Lamberson said
he has dealt with many substance abuse
cases in his eight years as assistant princi-
pal. He said while there are cases of drugs
in the schools, they are also watching out
for kids when they leave the classroom.
When a student is suspected of drug or
alcohol use, they are immediately tested ac-
cording to school protocol. If the test comes
back positive, they are enrolled in counsel-
ing sessions with Krihak.
Lamberson made a point that discipline
doesnt fix these addictions.
Its about help, Lamberson said. We
care about the kids. Sometimes that gets

V
oting is one of the inalienable
rights that our forefathers
fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important in-
alienable rights that we have as Amer-
icans, if not the most important in-
alienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for inde-
pendence in the 1700s based on the ral-
lying cry of no taxation without rep-
resentation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representa-
tion.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended
or ensured voting rights:
The Fifteenth Amendment to the
Constitution gave voting rights to non-
white males;
The Nineteenth Amendment gave
women the right to vote;
And The Voting Rights Act of 1965
prevented discrimination in voting.
A lot of time and effort was spent,
and blood was shed, to give all citizens
of the United States over the age of 18
the right to vote.
And now, it is up to you to take ad-
vantage of that right at the polls for
the General Election next Tuesday,
Nov. 5.
Up for election are the states gover-
nor a race between Republican in-
cumbent Chris Christie and Democrat
Barbara Buono the states lieutenant
governor a race between Republican
Kim Guadagno and Democrat Milly
Silva as well as local positions.
In this weeks Sun, you will find in-
formation on exactly what you are vot-
ing for, when polls are open and details
on every polling location in town.
If you have further questions about
the election, you can always find infor-
mation on the countys website or call
your local clerk.
Whatever your political slant or
whomever you may be voting for, just
make sure you make your way to the
polls next Tuesday. Many people be-
fore us fought for your inalienable
right to do so.

obituaries
The Woman's Club of Medford,
in collaboration with the Village
of Taunton Forge Shopping Cen-
ter, announced that it is bringing
Trunk or Treating to Medford
this Halloween.
In suburban communities
across the country, trunk-or-
treating also known as Hal-
loween tailgating is the latest
twist on the quintessentially
American tradition of door-to-
door candy-collecting, bringing
Halloween to the safety of
church, school or shopping center
parking lots, turning the backs of
vehicles into the new heavily dec-
orated front porch.
Trunk-or-treating also solves
the suburban and rural drawback
in which homes built a half-mile
apart make the simple act of
going door-to-door unrealistic.
Where sub-division neighbors are
sometimes strangers, these safe
alternative community events
substitute family-friendly enter-
tainment for the uncertainty par-
ents feel when escorting their
children through neighborhoods.
Said Kathy Cullen, president of
the Woman's Club, From the re-
search we've done, this is great
for the kids, but the parents end
up having just as much fun.
The Medford Trunk or Treat
event will be held on Halloween
Day from 3 to 5 p.m. Parents who
wish to participate in candy dis-
tribution should come in a vehi-
cle and be prepared to distribute
candy from their trunk. Decora-
tions are optional, but prizes will
be given for the best decorated
trunk.
Escorted children are invited
to walk through the designated
area of the parking lot to collect
candy. The Womans Club will
also lead a parade around the
shopping center so that the chil-
dren can collect treats from the
stores. Prizes will also be award-
ed to the best-costumed children.
The shopping center stores will
also have snacks and other
munchies available for partici-
pants.
The Taunton Forge Shopping
Center is located at the intersec-
tion of Taunton Boulevard
and Tuckerton Roads. For
more information and to register,
visit www.medfordwomansclub.

Trunk or Treating comes to Medford
Criminal fraud targeting busi-
ness entities and threatening
their financial survival is a seri-
ous and growing problem, and
learning how to spot scams and
protect your organization from
the threats will be the topic of the
eighth Legislative District Busi-
ness Roundtable on Wednesday,
Oct. 30.
Business fraud is running
rampant in this country, said
state Sen. Dawn Marie Addiego.
Criminals prefer to target small
and mid-size companies because
they lack the resources to protect
themselves and monitor compli-
cated financial transactions.
Addiego and Assemblyman
Chris Brown will host Frank Car-
mody, an investigator for the at-
torney general and the Division
of Community Affairs, from 8 to 9
a.m. at the Red Lion Diner, Routes
70 and 206 in Southampton.
The inspector will discuss
fraud scams that target commer-
cial enterprises, and share tips to
help businesses avoid the traps.
Carmody will explain common
check, cash and wire transfer
schemes; credit card skimming;
preventing employee fraud; and
how to avoid social networking
scams.
Developments in technology
have created new opportunities
for fraud. Being aware of some of
the current fraud trends may help
you stop the problem before it
starts, said Brown. Business
men and women need to be ever-
vigilant.
Carmody will also introduce
business people to the benefits of
the Alternative Dispute Resolu-
tion Unit, effective utilization of
employee background checks,
and the value of adopting and fol-
lowing a refund policy. Business-
es will also learn how to execute a
legal telemarketing campaign
within the rules of the do not
call list, and how to defend
against identity theft.
Todays scammers are global,
educated, talented, ruthless and
greedy, said Addiego. They use
the best technology for the worst
reasons, stealing money from un-
suspecting businesses. They are
difficult to apprehend and con-
vict, and recouping any loss is
virtually impossible.
Since unveiling the Business
Roundtable series in 2010, the
eighth District legislators have of-
fered members of the local busi-
ness community an opportunity
to meet face-to-face with key indi-
viduals from state government
and related entities.
Previous guest speakers have
included Lieutenant Gov. Kim
Guadagno, New Jersey Depart-
ment of Environmental Protec-
tion Commissioner Bob Martin,
State Treasurer Andrew Sida-
mon-Eristoff, Department of
Banking and Insurance Commis-
sioner Thomas B. Considine, and
Caren Franzini from the New Jer-
sey Economic Development Au-
thority.
Seating for the Business
Roundtable is extremely limited.
Reserve a spot by calling Josh
Foote at the 8th District office at
(609) 654-1498, or sending e-mail to
jfoote@njleg.org.
Coffee and danish will be
served.

Beyond explaining the dangers
of drugs and alcohol and their
proliferation in schools, Lamber-
son was also trying to get the par-
ents in attendance on board with
the administration. He explained
that many parents are in denial
or refuse to get their children
help.
We shouldnt be permissive,
he said. We cant just say its
OK, go ahead. This is about a
partnership. We want to partner
with you.
Coinciding with Violence
Awareness Week is Red Ribbon
Week, which is specifically fo-
cused around drug and alcohol
abuse in schools.
Medford Public Schools held a
number of events to promote
drug and alcohol awareness last
week, with the goal of reaching
students before they hit the age
when substances become more
prevalent.
Gale Ferraro, director of pupil
personnel services for Medford
Public Schools, said the schools
had theme days across the week
and hung banners around the
schools to commemorate the
week.
The schools also had poster
contests and classroom lessons
around those themes. The district
also hosted an assembly about
Red Ribbon Week across all
schools.
