PROGRESS REPORT
We are now almost half way through our second (and last) trimester of study in Ctosta Rica, and by this time, are able to converse in Spanish quite well, that is, if we are the ones who are choosing the topic of conversation. This trimester, we have four dif ferent classes each day: Phonetics, Oral Expression, Advanced Grammar, and Exercises. In, the Oral Expression class, we study the boot< of Acts from Dios Lleqa a I Hombre, which is' the version of the Spanish Bible which we give out to the graduates of the "El Encuentro" Correspondence Course in Chile (Spanich equivalent to TEV). This is very help ful, in building a Scriptural vocabulary in Spanish. In addition to our regular class load, both of us are using tutors, to help us to sharpen up on finer points of the lan guage, and to study the Ck^rrespondence Course that we will be using, We are also very active with the other members of our group: Jim and Lynn Adams,
Jeff and Kathy Phillips, Woody and Nelda Phillips, and Ralph and Cindy Shead. Jeff and Kathy "Ph1 I 1ips wiI I be leaving for Chile on March 2. We meet together often, usually on Friday nights, to try to get to know each other better; on Sunday afternoons, to worship
the Lord, and exhort one another (this Is in English, which is a time that we look for ward to each week, as each of us attends a Spanish-speaking church); and the men have a
prayer breakfast each week, to study the Scriptures, looking for patterns of missionary
work.
We have some very nice neighbors, who are willing to help us with our Spanish at any time. Our closest neighbor has five sons, from ages 8 to 14. All of these guys are

Another close neighbor is an English teacher in a Costa Rican school. I would like to share something that I learned from him. The family that lived In our house before we did, was also a missionary family. The man talked to Edgar (the teacher), but not in
Spanish.
Edgar told me that he talked too fast, was hard to understand, and the subject
Edqar said, "David, I never understood a thing he was trying to tell
me. But you are different. I feel like I can just talk to you, like a.friend." Marvin Mayers, in Christianity Confronts Culture, says that a prerequisite to sharing the Good News, Is the "Prior Question of Trust", in Edgar's case, that question of trust had been violated, and the seed that was sown did not take root. But by my willingness to be a friend, I now have an open door, to once again sow the seed, an<3 gTve it a chance
to grow.

CHURCH PLANTING SEMINAR
PAGE TWO
On December 18, 19, and 20, Irmiedlately after the end of our first trimester,of stu
dy, we (our group of Chilean missionaries) sponsored a "Church Planting Seminar", led by (3eorge Patterson, a missionary from Honduras, who has planted scores of indigenous, and
growing churches, over a period of about 12 years work. About 30 missionary students at the language Institute took part in the seminar, as Mr. Patterson shared what he has learned from his mistakes. Basically, he taught us eight Biblical principles of mission work, using an acrostic, "CHISPEf^" (sparkplug). Each principle is based on Scripture, and in Mr. Patterson's understanding, is not necessarily applicable to a minister of a local church, but is very much applicable to a missionary, specializing in planting growing, healthy churches. I would like to share these principles with you, in hope that some of you would react to them with em, by correspondence.
1. Cuerpo (Body). This principle is based on Ephesians 4:11-16, and emphasizes the fact that the church Is the body of Christ, Brand new churches almost always produce
more spiritual energy than established churches. He gave this as an example: a new church may need 100 spiritual calories to subsist. If it only produces 50, then it needs
to be subsidized from the outside in order to survive. But If the same church needs 100
spiritual cplories, but produces 200, then It can not help but grow.
2. Hacedores ((Doers). This principle, based on James 1:22, exhorts us to make our teaching "Biblical", instead of Just teaching the Bible. The emphasis is on obedienceorinted teaching. He emphasized that we should never expect Bible knowledge to pro
duce fruit, but that obedience to Christ does produce fruit. 3. Idoneos (Gifted men). This principle, based on 2 Timothy 2:2, is to train el ders, faithful men, who are able to teach other men also. He emphasized that these men

Matthew 10:14,

"shake the dust off of their feet", when there were not responses, Mr. Patterson urged us not to waste time with problem congregations, but to go on to another place, and to start one that will-grow. The exhortation is for the church planter to plant churches where God is working.
6. E.iemplos (Examples). Based on 1 Peter 5:1-4, the principle exhorts us to be ex amples, rather than bosses. He exhorted us not to use superior education as a means of controlling national leaders, encouraging us (as examples), not to ever do anything that
could not immediately be Imitated.
7. Reino (Kingdom). Based on Matthew's account of the Great Commission, this prin ciple teaches us to make disciples, instead of getting decisions. If we make sure that
the converts understnad that Jesus is the King, and that obedience to the King is a mark

received has been so great, that It would be Impossible to "cram It all Into one year". It has been a time of soul-searching, a time filled with ups and downs. Really there have been more ups than downs, but when the downs come, you can be sure that they seem real to us. Throughout all. It has been a time of growth for both of us. We are happy here In Chile, and are growing happier all the time. We place confidence In the Scripture that

NOTES FROM ROSE
I wanted to take the time to write and thank all of you for your concern for us. It feels so good knowing that all of you, and the Lord, are behind us. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
says, "In everything give thanks", and I especially fhank God for all of you.
Chile has been really good for me. I have had many trials but they have just helped me to grow closer and closer to the Lord. Living here has helped me to depend more fully on the Lord. I am happy to be in Chile. I really thank God for sending us here, and for the new and fuller life He has given me.
I was able to go to the south of Chile for a National Ladies Convention In July. From Santiago, five missionary women went, together with eleven Chilean women. We alI got to know each other really well during the 25 hours (round trip) on the train. It was great to meet other Christian women from the south, too. The women really got excited and want to work more and more for the Lord. We (missionary women) are starting more and more ac tivities for the Chilean women. For example, I have been going to the church at La Legua with Sarah Holt every Wednesday afternoon for special classes designed to help them start a Sunday School program. Please pray that God will bless our efforts. The only bad thing about the convention was that many women from Central Chile could not afford the trip to the South. Next year, the convention will be held in SAntiago, and many more women will
be able to share in the blessing.
I am also learning many new things in the home. David's favorite treat is homemade peanut butter, as he Is a "peanut butter nut". A small jar of peanut butter in the store costs about $5, so It really Is worth It to.make It at home. When we first arrived In Chile, green beans were going out of season, so we bought over fifty pounds of green beans at one time. I learned the process of home canning pretty quickly, because I am a "green bean nut". Also, I had to learn to wear three layers of clothes to keep warm in the cold houses (no houses have Central heating in Chile). I am also learning to make some Chilean dishes, with the help of Inez Molina (my closest Chilean friend).
The most exciting thing in my life now Is the life I feel inside of me. We are very

"El Encuentro"; Lesson 2 "The Bfble" A Book from Men or from God?"
Did you know that Christtans affirm that the Bible Is a book Inspired by God? We be lieve that God controlled the minds of the men who wrote the Bible during the time that
they were writing, so that they recorded His Infallible message, and not simply their own Ideas. On what do the Christians base the Idea that the Bible was Inspired by God, unlike any other book? The most important proof to show that the Bible is a divine re velation Is in fulfilled prophecy. If a man prophecies about nations and cities by his own knowledge, and the events he fortells do not happen as he said they would, we could say that the prophecies of this man simply came from his own imagination. But, If a man could forteli specifically about events that would happen In the future to nations, ci ties, or empires, giving minute details and these things actually came to pass, each pro phecy would be a testimony that the man spoke not merely on his own authority, but spoke by the Inspiration of God.
The Hebrew prophets made very sure that they did not err in their predictions. For, according to the Jewish Law, If a man claimed to prophesy by the Inspiration of God and erred In the most minute detail, he was Immediately stoned to death. Let's look at an example: the city of New York has now existed for more or less 300
years.
million live In the surrounding area. Today, if a man said that this city would be de stroyed within 15 years, and would never be rebuilt, we would probably say that he was
crazy. We don't have In our world a man who can speak with such authority and with com plete confidence that everything he says will come true. But In the Bible, men often prophesied every detail about the destruction of cities and nations; and everything they
saId came about In exact detaII.
Fifteen hundred years ago, there was a city that was already fifteen hundred years old. This city, named Tyre, was one of the principle cities on the east Mediterranean coast. It was a prominent commerlcal center, as well as being prosperous and beautiful. The citizens of Tyre were known for the bad treatment they gave to their prisoners of war and for their extreme vanity. Because they were evil, the prophet Ezeklel prophe sied against the c4ty. He did not speak by his own authority. Instead, he spoke by the authority of God. (Ezeklel 26:1-14) He mentions seven definite acts that would happen: 1. Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonians would conquer the city (vs. 7). 2. Other nations would participate In the destruction of Tyre, and they would attack like waves of the sea, one. after another (vs. 3). 3. After the conquest, the city of Tyre would be like a smooth rock (vs. 14). 4. The place where the city has been would become a place for fishermen to dry their nets (vs. 14). 5. The stones, the timber, and even the dust of the city would be thrown Into the sea (vs. 12). 6. The conquerers of Tyre would use battering rams and sledge hammers to demolish the walls (vs. 9). 7. The city of Tyre would never be restored (vs. 14). During the first fifteen hundred years of the existence of Tyre, several nations attacked the city, but were never able to conquer it. It would have been Impossible for one man, simply by his own knowledge, to prophesy
about the city of Tyre In such a manner. But Ezeklel ledge^ rather he prophesied by the Inspiration of (Sod. the prophecy was completed In every detail.
didn't prophesy by his own know So, history Itself shows us that
Four years after Ezeklel prophesied about the city of Tyre, the king Nebuchadnezzar encircled the city. For thirteen years he did not permit anyone to enter or leave the city as he tried to conquer It. Finally, as Ezeklel had foretohd, Nebuchadnezzar con quered Tyre, something no other nation had been able to do. But, when his army entered

re-established their location on an Island one kilometer out Into the Mediterranean Sea.
Nebuchadnezzar tried to conquer the new island city, but was unsuccessful.
Exactly 241 years after Nebuchanezzar declared was on Tyre, Alexander the Great, the famous Greek general, declared war on the new Island city of Tyre. For two years, he tried to conquer the new city using rafts of the Persians, whom he had previously con quered. After falling In these attempts, his army began throwing the columns, crocks, and the dirt from the ancient city of Tyre into the sea, leaving it like a smooth stone. With this material, they were able to span the gap between the coast and the island with an earthen bridge 70 meters wide and a kilometer long. The island was no longer an Is land, but became a mere peninsula. To build the bridge, the Greek engineers constructed
a special type of covering that allowed the Greeks to be protected from the artillery fire while they worked on the bridge. When they completed the construction, they em ployed the tallest towers that man had used In history to advance on the city. These to wers were 60 meters high or approximately the same height as a 20 story building. After 7 months of work. In which time they built the bridge and the towers, they were able tor conquer Tyre. During the battle against the city, the Greeks killed at least 10,000
people and sold the remaining people into s.lavery.
The half of the island where the inhabitants of Tyre had built the new city was ac
tually below sea level during high tide. Due to the fact that the land area of the is land was rather limited, they extended their territory Into the sea by constructing a dike to hold back the ocean. By sorking during periods when the tides were low they
were able to build the dike. After the conquest of Tyre by Alexander the Great, ail of the city, including the dike, was totally destroyed.
During the time in which Alexander the Great was conquering Tyre, the leaders of other cities began to fear him so greatly that they did not even.resist the advance of the Greek army, but surrendered every city without even fighting. For this reason, the advance of the Greek army on the eastern side of the Mediterranean was rapid and almost
