Dollars &
Sense Day
Te Dollars & Sense Day
special event for families
will be held on Friday,
November 8 in the Slocan
Valley. Te event will
showcase many organiz-
ations and agencies that
have something to ofer
families to help them live
a full, rich life while easing
the fnancial squeeze they
face. Tere is a wide range
of supports that families
are entitled to, but it can
be challenging to fnd out
about all of them.
Our idea is to bring
as much information as
possible together on one
day, under one roof, to
make it easy for families
to access
contd on pg 12

Dollars & Sense Days contd from pg 11
everything from subsidies, to employment and training
opportunities, to free childrens programs and services,
tax benefts, free government money for their childs
education, or just how to eat well with less money, says
Penny Tees, the Slocan Valley early childhood coordin-
ator who is co-hosting the event.
Parents will be able to browse the displays, chat with
staf from various organizations, get support to fll out sub-
sidy forms, and take home resources. Tere will be stories,
some simple art and playdough activities for the children,
and a free, nutritious lunch will be provided even some
great door prizes.
Funding for this free special event was part of the frst
round of granting provided by the Slocan Valley Legacy Fund.
It aligns nicely with Financial Literacy Month in Canada,
co-host Alison Salo, the Slocan Valley CBAL coordinator
notes. We know families face the pressures of high hous-
ing and childcare costs, student loans, limited employment,
and the general expenses of raising a family, so we are taking
a very broad view that includes all aspects of making ends
meet, while still enriching your familys life. Understanding
how to use the resources available to you is fnancial literacy.
A showcase like this has never happened in the Slocan
Valley, so it will be a unique opportunity for families. Dol-
lars & Sense Day runs from 10 am to 2 pm at the Passmore
Hall, on Friday, November 8. All families are welcome.
For more information, contact Penny at 250-226-7605
or Alison at 250-359-6887.
A Brilliant Award
One hundred years afer its construction, the Brilliant
Bridge has been honoured by Heritage BC with its highest
award Outstanding Achievement for the recent restor-
ation and preservation of the historic structure.
Te award was presented at a ceremony in Burnaby on
October 18 to the Regional District of Central Kootenay,
Concreate Ltd. and McGinn En-
gineering and Preservation for
the care and commitment dem-
onstrated in the completion of
this important project.
Te Heritage Society does not
give out this award lightly, said
Barry McGinn of McGinn En-
gineering and Preservation, who
nominated the bridge for the hon-
our. Tis award recognizes tech-
nical excellence, the level of volun-
teer and community involvement
in the project, and the overall value
of the bridge to the areas heritage.
Te restoration commenced
in September 2009 with funding
from multiple sponsors. Com-
pleted in 2010, the project cost
nearly $1,000,000.
Te project didnt cost our
taxpayers anything, said Gordon
Zaitsof, RDCK Area J Director.
Its one of those projects that
the whole community can take
pride in, as so many people were
involved. Its certainly been the
highlight of my political career.
Te Brilliant Bridge was con-
structed in 1913 by Doukhobors
using hand tools and traditional
techniques.
Tis award also speaks to the
original workmanship of the
bridge, said Zaitsof. Te bridge
was important to this area for
transportation and for opening
up the region to economic de-
velopment.
For more information on the
Brilliant Bridge, please visit:

Borealis String Quartet In Kaslo
On Saturday, November 16, at 7:30 pm at St. Andrews
United Church, the Kaslo Concert Society is proud to
present the Borealis String Quartet.
One of the most dynamic and exciting world-class
ensembles of its generation, the Borealis String Quartet
has received international critical acclaim as an ensem-
ble praised for its fery performances, passionate style,
and refned, musical interpretation. Te Borealis has also
served as string quartet-in-residence at the University of
British Columbia for the past 10 years. As well as exten-
sive concertizing, the Quartet is frequently heard on CBC
Radio and other radio stations across North America and
Asia. Said the Hamilton Spectator, Light used to be faster
than sound, until these people came along. In addition to
performance, the Borealis has frequently served as jury
members for competitions, most recently at the 2012 Eck-
hardt-Gramatt National Music Competition.
Season passes are still a bargain at $80, and single tickets
at $22 are available at Figments in Kaslo or at the door.
School age children are admitted free when accompanied
by an adult patron.

Dispelling Bat Myths
Are bats really blind? Do they want to suck your
blood? Tese are some of the questions that educa-
tors around the Columbia Basin are answering. Just
in time for Halloween, dynamic and skilled educators
from the Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP)
are providing youth programs on bats. Bats are ac-
tually very shy, clean creatures says Juliet Craig, Co-
ordinating Biologist for the KCBP. Tere are so many
myths about bats. Tey are extremely benefcial in eat-
ing nocturnal fying insects including mosquitoes, and
cycling nutrients from wetlands to upland forests.
Trough a partnership with the KCBP and Wild
Voices for Kids, educators are able to provide free
school programs to teach children about the amazing
world of bats, including their unique features, their
role in ecosystems, and our local bat species. Students
will get a virtual tour of bats from around the world,
eavesdrop on their echolocation calls, and explore
current issues in bat conservation.
Half of the bat species in BC are at risk says Craig.
With the approach of white nose syndrome, a disease
that has been decimating bat populations in eastern
North America, it is more important than ever to get
communities involved in bat conservation, including
our youth. Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, the
KCBP approaches bat conservation in a number of
ways, including assisting land owners with bat issues,
promoting the annual bat count to monitor popula-
tions, and promoting the installation of bat houses. To
date, the KCBP has provided almost 500 visits to local
residents, and identifed over 350 roost sites for seven
bat species.

Bat Project, visit www.kootenaybats.com or contact

gram through Wild Voices for Kids at cbeen.org/wvf/

Clinton +1 Perform At
St. Saviours Anglican Church
Te duo Clinton +1 (saxophonist Clinton Swan-
son and acoustic bassist Rob Fahie) will give a public
performance on Tursday, November 7 at St. Sav-
iours Pro-Cathedral, (701 Ward Street) in Nelson at
7:30 pm.
Original works and classic tunes, all with a jazz fa-
vour, will colour the evening, slated as a fundraiser for
the St. Saviours Food Pantry. Clintons warm but sassy
saxophone and Robs beautiful, full bodied soulful tone
will make vibrant, collaborative music.
Clinton, who picked up his frst saxophone at age
11, grew up in the Slocan Valley and graduated from
Mt. Sentinel High School. He attended the Selkirk
College music school and eventually moved to Van-
couver to further his musical education. He worked
in the music industry there for 17 years before re-
turning to Nelson.
Rob Fahie, who grew up in Ottawa, has toured ex-
tensively throughout the world, playing at many inter-
national jazz festivals and concert venues including Car-
negie Hall before moving to Nelson. Together, Clinton
Swanson and Rob Fahie, as the duo Clinton +1, add a
new dimension to local jazz.

iours Anglican Church in Nelson, is open to those in

Supporting Te Bereaved
For those who have lost someone through death, the
cycle of loss through detachment, despair and anger to
recovery can be a lonely, frightening and overwhelming
experience, even when family and friends are trying to
support us. A grief support group provides a safe, sup-
portive environment where no participants are expected
to say or do anything they are uncomfortable with. In-
dividuals who have participated in a Hospice grief sup-
port group learn that the way they are experiencing their
grief is normal and that basically we all grieve in the same
way. Grief is a healthy response to loss that needs to be ac-
knowledged and expressed before we can move on. Work-
ing through feelings about losses, and sharing them with
others who are also grieving, decreases our isolation and
loneliness while helping us learn how to experience and
work through our pain.
Nelson & District Hospice Society is ofering a free Grief
Support Series for anyone grieving the loss of someone
through death. Te group will run for six weeks starting
Tursday, November 7 through Tursday, December 12
from 10 am to noon. Pre-registration is required but at-
tendance is free.
For more information and/or to register, please call Nel-
son Hospice at 250-352-2337 or email info@nelsonhos-
pice.org. All calls are confdential. Donations gratefully
accepted

Kootenay Co-op Member Loans
Program At $1 Million!
On October 19, just over half way through the cam-
paign, the Kootenay Co-ops member loan campaign has
hit the $1 million mark.
We couldnt be more heartened by the response from
our members, beams Board Director and Member Loans
Committee Chair Susan Morrison. Tis campaign has
been about so much more than the money hitting the
$1 million mark is also about the excitement, trust and
good will thats behind every dollar loaned.
Tough the process of making a member loan takes only
a matter of minutes, Morrison says many people are stay-
ing longer to talk about the Co-op. Our Member Loans
team keeps telling me how meaningful they are fnding
the experience of closing these loans. Members are shar-
ing their favourite stories about the Co-op; some going all
the way back to its roots as a buying club in South Slocan.
Tey are all proud of the Co-op they own and how its con-
tributed to a healthy community and local economy.
Tere is no typical member making a loan, says Mem-
ber Loans coordinator Marya Skrypiczajko. Te cam-
paign is a refection of the diversity of the whole member-
ship. We are receiving support from founding members,
local farmers, members who have childhood memories
of shopping at the Co-op, new members who have just
signed up this year and everyone in between. What they
have in common is that they are all excited about helping
to build a friendly, healthy, community-owned food store.

Author Reading And Artist
Reception At Te Nelson Library
Te arts collide this month at the Nelson Public Library
during November and Decmber, when Argenta artist Deb
Borsos exhibits pastel landscapes, all of them inspired by
books she has loved. Tree authors whose books have been
honoured Anne DeGrace, Rita Moir, and Holley Rubin-
sky will join Borsos in a reading and reception on Tues-
day, November 5 at 7pm.
My childhood home was always a refuge for books, and
though there are no authors in my family, we are a herd of
artists as well as hoarding bibliophiles, explains Borsos.
So it delighted me to be ofered an exhibit here in a library.
What better gallery to share my visual stories in?
Borsos has played with the concept before. Several years
ago, I put together a collection of work based on listening
to CBC Radio for a year and then creating paintings which
were inspired by stories I had heard, she says. She called
that exhibition Every Story Tells a Picture.
Georgia OKeefes biography A Woman on Paper pro-
vides the title for this exhibition, as well as inspiration for
a painting. Other books that have inspired works include
Te Perfection of the Morning by Sharon Butala, Te Far
Country by Nevil Shute, and Where the Wild Tings Are by
Maurice Sendak, among others.
Local books include Moirs Te Windshif Line, Rubin-
skys Beyond Tis Point, and DeGraces Wind Tails. Borsos
will discuss her process and the authors will read from their
works during the evening.
Borsos creates vivid impressionist landscapes in pastel,
sometimes using fne grit industrial sandpaper as a surface
for a remarkable intensity of pigment. Te area in the north
end of the lake where she lives provides infnite inspira-
tion in creating her pastel landscapes. Her work has found
homes in private collections around the world.
I am a big fan of Debs work, says DeGrace. Her landscapes
combine sensitivity and keen observation with remarkable
depth just like a good book. To be included is an honour.

Kaslo Community Garden Club
Praises People, Produce
and Projects
Individuals and community groups have helped restore
the gardens ground for planting and achieve the ambi-
tious projects that have been accomplished in the garden.
People have given hours to prepare ground, plant, weed,
and present workshops. People have given donations of
money, plants, mushroom spore, manure, soil, seeds,
tools, and compost. Tis shows a true community spirit,
and it shows the pride in the garden.
We are celebrating that the Kaslo Community Garden
Club has been selected as the recipient of Community
Donation Day at the Kootenay Co-op in Nelson on Nov-
ember 19. KCGC will set up an information table and
executive members will be there to visit with you and an-
swer questions. Te KCGC will receive 3% of sales that
day. Please consider shopping that day, your purchases
beneft ongoing development of KCGC.
Te garden is being put to bed for the winter. Crops
have been harvested, garlic is planted, the soil has been
cleared and garden refuse composted, and planting green
manure crops is underway. Tis growing season over half
of the garden was dedicated to community food security,
and crops have gone to the Kaslo Food Hub for distri-
bution. Garlic, lettuce, potatoes, beets, squash, broccoli,
kale, leeks, and carrots have all been harvested for use by
our community. Te balance of the garden was devoted
to personal allotments for the growing season. Allotment
gardeners paid a membership and lot fee and signed a gar-
deners agreement and waiver, and then gardened to their
hearts content.
Te garden is a community resource and you are wel-
come. You are invited to participate in the Kaslo Com-
munity Garden Club. Te new gates allow easy access.
Come walk through or sit under the grape arbor and see
or dream about what will grow. Maybe next growing sea-
son you will want to garden with us. Watch for the KCGC
annual general meeting in February, 2014.

Hello! My name is Mia. I dont like to brag but just look at
my picture, I am a very beautiful lady and I heard the shelter
staf say that I have a good-natured personality. I love to be
social and give head butts and kisses. I would suit a family
with older children as I tend to dislike being over-handled,
but I love to sit on your lap and purr away, just appreciating
your afection. So please come down to the Nelson SPCA
Shelter for a visit and give me a cuddle. I can say without a
doubt that I would be a great addition to your family. You
can also call 250-352-7178 for more information.

My parents were faced with selling their home after many happy years living in the Kinnaird bench.
As I live out of the area it was important to me that they hire an experienced Realtor to sell their home.
We met with Joni and soon realized that she was well qualifed. We were all very pleased with her service
and professionalism throughout the whole listing and selling process.
I would highly recommend Joni to any other seniors. Shell take care of all the details. Thanks Joni!

Kootenay Co-op Member Loans
contd from pg 31
Te Kootenay Co-op launched its Member Loans Pro-
gram on October 1 with a goal of raising $1.5 million to
equip the new store, which they expect will open in early
summer of 2015. Does the $1.5 M goal seem attainable in
the time remaining? Tis campaign af rms that we have
a truly amazing community of members who are genu-
inely enthusiastic about loaning their money to the Co-
op, says Morrison. I believe we can get to $1.5M. And, to
the best of our knowledge, this will set a record for funds
raised by a Canadian food co-op!
One important message we want to convey at this time
is that the clock is ticking! says Skrypiczajko. Te pro-
gram closes on October 31, so members who are interested
in participating should defnitely contact us as soon as pos-
sible. All members of the Kootenay Co-op are eligible to
make a loan to the Co-op, and other community members
excited about the opportunity to invest locally can join the
Co-op and be a part of this program immediately.
For more information, call the Member Loans Desk
at 250-354-4077, ext. 555, pick up a pamphlet at the Co-
ops Customer Service desk or visit http://www.kootenay.

Selkirk
College Gala Will
Feature Music &
Technology
Students
With the countdown
on to the Selkirk College
Gala 2013, students in
the Music & Technology
Program are fne tuning
their skills for a wonderful
night of entertainment.
Te theme of this years
annual gala is Five Pillars
of Success which lay the
foundation of the college.
One of those pillars is
focus on the learner, and
the work being done in
the Music & Technology
Program at Nelsons Tenth
Street Campus is a perfect
example.
Music at the November
23 Gala will be provided by
15 members of the second
year Music & Technology
Program class. Te band
will play two 45-minute
dance sets, one featuring
the sounds of Motown and
the other grooves from the
disco era.
Tis is an import-
ant class project for the
second year students, says
Music & Technology Pro-
gram keyboards instruct-
or Gilles Parenteau. Te
fnal result will be top-
notch, but just as import-
ant for us is that it teaches
the students how to put
an event like this together.
When the night is done the
students will have beneft-
ted a great deal from the
entire process.
Selkirk Colleges Music
& Technology Program
has been preparing stu-
dents for the commercial
entertainment industry
for 25 years. Te two-year
diploma program develops
skills in areas of perform-
ance, song writing, audio
recording, flm scoring
and improvisation. Te
curriculum includes in-
struction, ear training.

Selkirk College Gala contd from pg 50
One of the key skills being developed in the Gala prep-
aration is learning music in a short period of time and
then performing it live. Tat is the reality of being a pro-
fessional musician, says Parenteau. We are decreasing
the contact to the music for the students. Tey need to
be good performers, but just as important they must be
ef cient music readers.
Its a project welcomed by the second year class. Im
really excited about it, says keyboard student Rory
Hayes-Anderson. Tese are skills I currently dont have
and in the next few weeks will get a chance to grow under
the pressure of having an important performance.

Tough every young musician dreams of playing sold-
out shows at the biggest venues, the Music & Technology
Program takes a more business minded approach.
All of these things have nothing to do with MuchMusic
or overnight YouTube success, says Parenteau. Playing is
a job and the goal is to be able to feed yourself as a profes-
sional musician.
Becoming a recording artist is never discouraged, and
students are encouraged to continue to chase their dreams.
To do that and continue to work daily as a musician are
options graduates come away with afer two years. Some
of the realistic paths for graduates include the cruise ship
industry, Cirque du Soleil, conventions, specialty acts and
theatre work.
To get students on their way, Gala 2013 is sure to pro-
vide lasting lessons. We always look forward to what the
Music & Technology Program students come up with
on Gala night, says Joyce Buckler, Donor Services Co-
ordinator at Selkirk College. Te Gala is an important
fundraiser for the college and a fantastic evening out, but
at the heart is a showcase of the incredible talents of our
students in all programs.
Tickets for Selkirk Colleges Gala 2013 are $70 per per-
son or $520 for a table of eight. Te evening starts at 6 pm
at Mary Hall on the Tenth Street Campus and includes a
fve course meal. Tere will be a silent and live auction
along with the music and dance.
To reserve your seat for the November 23 Gala, email
events@selkirk.ca or call 250-365-1360.
