Objectives

The objectives for this proposal are the following:

Present Mr. Lesuma at Taylorsville High School with solutions to

solve our school traffic, which causes students confusion, late to class in the mornings and students being upset

Find some reasonable and constructive solutions to this conflict Present several solutions:

Increase the speed limit Change the pick-up and drop off zones Create more driving lanes Make the green turning light on Redwood Road stay green longer

Problem Analysis
Our team has identified that students at Taylorsville High School appear to be struggling when arriving to school in the mornings and when leaving school due to traffic. The problem seems to be there are not enough lanes to keep traffic flowing, also the lanes we have are to narrow. One or more solutions can usually be found for any problem, and in this case we believe there are three:

Change the pick-up and drop off zones Create more driving lanes Make the green turning light on Redwood Road stay green longer

Research Solutions

Drivers who are dropping or picking up their teens which at some point they have to merge it takes them time to do it because traffic are coming through and they dont always stop to give them a chance to merge. Parents who are dropping or picking up their kids also get stuck in traffic because some of the other drivers dont stop to give them right of way causing traffic to slow down. A survey was created to be handed out to 450 students. The questions on this survey were: Do you like the way our school lanes are set up? Is it easy for you to leave after school? Do you drive to school? Is it easy for you to arrive at school in the mornings? Out of those students who did the survey only 130 completed the survey.

Regarding content, students answered that they would like to: have more lanes, increase speed limit to 20, remove the merging lane, change stop signs and add three lanes going one way. While searching the web we came to a conclusion that were not the only school that is being affected via traffic, there are many other schools that have the same problem as we do, such as, Gopalapuram Schools, James E. Moss, Park City High, Cleveland and Treasure Mountain. Jr. High. In this research we found out that traffic not only affects students but parents as well. Parents of students get really upset that they always have a very difficult time confronting the issue of traffic congestion around schools, school administration are trying out different strategies to address the issue: Principal called for a parents-teacher meeting to discuss ways to handle the problem A service organization was formed to have volunteers trained to be able to regulate traffic The administration decided to change the pick-up and drop off zones

Ever since the administration came up with this solutions there is less numbers of late-comers, apparently their Road Safety Patrol volunteers regulating traffic every morning made a dynamic difference regarding to their attendance. Also, changing their pick-up and drop-off zones makes traffic flows more rapidly. An interview with Mr. Lesuma was generated to see what his thoughts are about the conflict towards traffic. We questioned him some questions that helped us get to a conclusion in order to solve this problem. We contemplate that it would be very helpful if parents who drive their kids to school could leave their house a little earlier so they arrive to school on time in that way theres a chance that they wont hit traffic or cause traffic. We also mentioned Mr. Lesuma if it would be beneficial to change the speed limit to 20, which currently right now is at 10. His answer was No because he sees students driving at 60 MPH everyday so that wont make a difference. Instead, he believes that maybe if the green turning light on Redwood Road stays green longer would be more accommodating, and also students who drive themselves

over, can enter on the other side of the school by 5400 which it would decrease traffic by Redwood Road when entering into the building.
