PART - A (8 X 5 = 40 Marks) Answer any EIGHT Questions 1. List out the limitations of classical theory and mention the importance of quantum theory, with reference to radiation.
2. State the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. A proton is confined to a nucleus of radius 10 -14 m. Calculate the minimum uncertainty in its momentum. Also calculate the minimum kinetic energy of the proton. The proton mass is 1.67 x 10 -27 kg.
3. Discuss the working of scanning tunnelling microscope with a neat diagram. 4. What is intermodal dispersion and deduce the expression for time dilation due to intermodel dispersion.
5. Write short note on carbon nano tubes and their types. 6. What is spatial and temporal coherence? Explain in detail. 7. Using Einsteins theory, show that in the optical region, say at = 5893 and T = 300 K, the amplification is not possible.
8. Differentiate how data is recorded in Blue-ray and compact discs and hence elaborate on the advantage of blue-ray discs.
9. Write the differential and integral form of Maxwells equations. 10. A silica optical fiber has a core of refractive index 1.55 and a cladding of refractive index 1.47. Determine (a) the critical angle at the core cladding interface, (b) the numerical aperture for the fiber and (c) the acceptance angle in air for the fiber.
