This is a question from one of readers, Carlos. Here is an ex tended v ersion of his question: Q: I am asking y ou if y ou could point out some good and straight tips in answering interv iew questions like, Tell me something about y ourself? Dont y ou think its a v ery v ague question and most HRs ask the same set from time to time? I know it sounds ridiculous to dole out y our whole life story . I just want an honest and straight to the point response. A: First of all I would like to state that as a former HR officer my self, I also asked this question a lot. The possible reasons why interv iewers ask this question are: 1 . To break the ice and get the interv iew rolling 2. To learn more about the applicant so they can pick up points to ask about I would like to stress that there is no straight and specific answer to this kind of question simply because people are different with different liv es and ex periences. The key is to: 1 . Offer an answer that rev eals a little about y ourself BUT 2. Do not rev eal too much about y our personal or family life (mention as little as possible) 3. Do not make y our answer too long 4. Include details about y our professional ex perience and professional qualities 5. Be honest The best that I can offer is an ex ample of how y ou might answer this question. Y ou can start by say ing something like:

Strictly speaking, interv iewers themselv es should av oid personal questions and this is the norm in western organizations. In the Philippines howev er, it is a fact that these questions are asked to determine whether or not y ou might potentially hav e attendance, punctuality and performance issues due to y our personal situation. Y ou may share personal bits about y ourself and y our family but av oid going into v ery specific details. My name is Marian Santos. I am from I loilo City and the youngest of three siblings. All of my older siblings are professionals in the fields of Accounting, Law and Medicine. I have decided to pursue a career in I nformation Technology, having graduated with a degree in I T. This is also the ideal career path for me since I have always been interested and good at database management and systems development.

In my ex perience in local companies here and in Cebu, the third sample is perhaps the most ideal.
