2 SCOPE The test procedure guides the EQA engineer in carrying out low voltage (up to 500V) core loss measurement on power transformers. 3. Sr. No. 3.1 3.2 INPUTS Activity / Documents Supply Requirements: 1. 3, 440 V, 50 Hz with switch facility rated at least 15A. Instrument Requirements: 2. LPF (0.2/0.5) Wattmeter - 2 Nos or 1 No. 3. Phase sequence tester 500 V if required - 1 No. 4. A.C. voltmeter 0 600V or Multimeter - 1 No. 5. Multi Ratio Current Transformer if required - 1 No. 6. Potential Transformer 440/110 V if required - 2 Nos or 1 No. 7. A.C. Ammeter 0 1/5A or Multimeter - 1 No. 8. 3 Variac rated at least 10A if required 1 No REFERENCE : Manufacturer manual Earlier Test record CIRCUIT DIAGRM - (Refer enclosed fig. A) PREREQUISITES Activity Ensure that the transformer under test is de-energized. For system transformers, ensure that the maintenance engineer has taken the necessary permits and isolated the transformer. Ensure that no parallel circuits are connected to the transformer under test and there are no shorts on the secondary side. In the case of neutral grounded transformers, ensure that the ground connection to neutral is removed.. Interconnecting Transformers of Gas Insulated Sub-stations with SF6 to oil bushings are tested through earth switches (QE3). In such cases, ensure that the earth switches are closed and earthing strips removed. Core loss test is to be preferably carried out from LV side, but can be done on both sides

when necessary. Potential and current transformers with suitable ratios are to be used in case the wattmeter is not rated for the voltage and current. Ensure that IR of the transformer as measured under IR test is satisfactory. In case of construction supply, check phase sequence of 440 V supply and make correct connections to wattmeter. ACTIVITIES Activity / Documents Make and confirm the circuit connections as circuit diagram Note down the wattmeter multiplying factor (MF) from the used wattmeter range. Switch on the supply in case of direct connection. Increase the voltage slowly up to the final desired value if the supply is connected through 3 variac for LT distribution transformers (rated 415V). Wait for few minutes for the charging current to settle down. Record the line voltages, currents, wattmeter readings (W1, W2). Record the frequency with the help of multimeter or note from the station panel meter. If the test is carried out with single ammeter/wattmeter repeat the test with the meters connected on other phase(s) and record the readings. The single ammeter shall be first connected as A1, the single wattmeter as W1 and the test repeated with the same meters connected as A2 and W2. Compute the core loss from the recorded readings: Core loss in watts = CTR X PTR X MF (W1+W2) The core loss obtained thus to be compared with earlier results and the design values RECORDS Activity / Documents Test Format is as per sheet EQA-FM-TR LIMITS Activity / Documents Deviation with the earlier result (after voltage, frequency corrections) : 10% or Deviation with commissioning value : 20% CORRECTIVE ACTIONS WHEN DEVIATIONS ARE BEYOND LIMITS The Engineer shall repeat the test with firm connections at a higher possible voltage. The Engineer shall convey the deviations to SH/AGM/DGM With the concurrence of DGM the engineer/SH shall instruct the EMD to rectify the defect. The Engineer shall carry out the test after the defect is attended .
