A call for grateful living

Many American adults consider Thanksgiving to be their favorite holiday. While Christmas or the Christmas season, really is a festive, nostalgic celebration, lets be honest, its A LOT of work! Thanksgiving, on the other hand, is a day thats good for the soul. If we are fortunate, we may be able to take a break from our hectic lives, gather with family members, share a meal with loved ones and give (not gifts, but) thanks. Many of us may not be aware of just what a powerful emotion gratitude really is. It may be surprising for some to learn that those who practice gratitude as a way of life feel better about themselves, are more optimistic about the future and improve their health! In fact, scientists are finding that these grateful individuals consistently report many health benefits, including: Stronger immune systems. Lower blood pressure. Higher levels of positive emotions. More joy, optimism and happiness. Feeling less lonely and isolated.1 certain ice melts. Wendy Halfpap shares a natural treatment option for plantar fasciitis that those who suffer with the condition may not have considered. And, theres much more, so please read on! Best wishes for a Thanksgiving Day thats good for your soul. Challenge yourself to keep the gratitude of the day flowing in your life so you, too, can reap the benefits! In health and happiness,

Now thats power! Lets take this as motivation to think and feel gratefully every day, not just on Thanksgiving Day. Image what could happen I am grateful for all of our wonderful advertisers who submit articles to educate their communities about more options for living healthy lifestyles. In this issue, Jill Greinke reminds us about the importance of each of us being in full alignment with our life purpose and identifies seven mistakes we should avoid in order to reach that happiness. Patti Beres cautions us about a potential danger for our pets as the snow starts falling: overexposure to

Choosing a personal trainer

By John Pietenpol, CPT

ver the course of the last decade, the fitness industry has doubled in size. Not surprisingly, the number of personal trainers working in the United States has seen a similar increase. With an abundance of trainers entering the marketplace, the incredibly important (and difficult) task of finding the right

trainer for you has become as complicated as picking out a new car, a pair of sneakers, cereal or anything, really. We live in a world filled with choices. The first step is often the easiest. You simply must decide where you will feel comfortable doing your workout. The most common venues are large fitness centers like the YMCA and Golds Gym. These are your one-stop shops that provide personal trainers or the option to use their machines independently whenever you want and at your own pace. Additionally, they may offer healthy lifestyle and wellness programs like yoga, spin, Zumba, etc. These activities are fantastic complements to any personal training program. Alternatively, you can join a small fitness studio the industrys fastest-growing segment. Studios truly put the personal in personal training by providing an intimate setting and custom workout routines. Newcomers who are uncomfortable working out in front of large groups are also attracted to the fitness studios private atmosphere. Very few small studios employ more than three trainers, and all of them strive to help clients reach their goals through exercise and diet. Finally, if youre short on time and long on cash, you can have a personal trainer come to you. Many trainers make their living travelling to peoples homes and leading one-on-one workout routines. If youre a frequent-flying professional or a cant-leavehome parent, this option might work best for you.

Natures Pathways | November 2013

Deciding where you want to work out drastically pares down the field of personal trainers. Now its time to discover the one thats right for you. It is essential to find someone you have a good rapport with, as it will make exercising that much more enjoyable. The first meeting should be free, so dont be afraid to interview a few trainers before you make a decision. To help get you started, here are several questions to ask your potential trainer.

About the personal trainer:

What are your credentials?

A personal trainer should hold NCCA-accredited certification. It lets you know youre working with a professional with the knowledge and skill to provide a safe and effective workout. Only 10 of nearly 70 certification agencies are recognized by the NCCA. For a complete list of NCCA-accredited certification agencies, go to www.credentialingexcellence.org/ncca. What is your area of expertise, and how much training experience do you have? Youll want to make sure the trainer has experience working with clients with similar goals, needs and/or limitations. This question is of particular importance if you have very specific fitness goals (sports conditioning, weight loss, rehabilitation, etc.). What kind of fitness assessments do you perform and how often? Fitness assessments body fat testing, blood pressure screening, and strength, flexibility and endurance tests help a trainer gauge your fitness level and design a safe exercise program. What type of motivational techniques do you use to help clients reach their goals? Knowing my fitness goals, what kind of workout plan will you develop to help me reach them? How often will you change my workout routine? Would you mind providing a few current clients as references?

NO CONTRACTS! NO BULK PACKAGES! JUST PAY MONTHLY!

About training packages:

What kind of packages do you offer?

As with most things, the more you buy, the less it costs. Many trainers offer bulk discounts, resulting in significant cost-persession savings. Its also a good idea to ask about payment options (pay in full, per session, in installments). What is your refund policy? If you are unhappy with your trainer, the experience or the results, youre going to want a refund. If I buy a package, will my prepaid sessions expire? Treat these packages like a gift card or certificate. There is a chance that all of your sessions need to be used by a certain date. What is your cancellation policy? In order to receive a refund, many trainers require that you cancel a session one to two days in advance.

Energy medicine for pets?

By Dr. Jodie

ou first learned about energy in science class when your teacher explained that all matter is made up of jiggly atoms. Attached to this was the well-accepted principle of transferring energy from one form of matter to another. Why, then, is it so difficult to wrap our Western-trained minds around the alternative medicine concepts of energy diagnostics and healing? The idea that acupuncture needles can be placed at strategic junctures of nerve complexes to affect neurohormonal responses is becoming mainstream, but start explaining chi

movement along meridians, and you will lose half your believers! Investigate the chemical constituents of essential oils and explain that high levels of beta caryophyllene in copaiba can have a potent anti-inflammatory impact, and you will have quite a few takers. Tell a group that frankincense oil can aid with spiritual passing, and the room gets quiet. Observe a demonstration of muscle testing to diagnose an imbalance and choose an appropriate supplement, and an entire room of chiropractors are on board. Suggest that BioMeridian machine readings, which measure frequencies in the hair, saliva and nail clippings of an ill pet, can be transferred through a surrogate person, and the participants are considered crazy! Yet, despite skepticism, practitioners who provide energy medicine diagnostics and treatments are enjoying success while working with pets in many different alternative modalities. Loving cat mommies are telling their neighbors how their ill felines improved with kitty raindrop. This essential oils treatment

is very intense and should only be performed with the guidance of a knowledgeable holistic veterinarian who is experienced with the usage of safe essential oils. Desperate canine parents are astounded at the results achieved for their stiff, old arthritic buddies with modalities such as essential oils massage with copaiba, wintergreen and one drop of peppermint. Alternating this with acupuncture treatments and laser light therapy, has been used to avoid harmful non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These pet patients intuitively know that these gentle treatments are good for them. They relax, yawn, stretch and respond in a way that makes a pet guardian tear up and remark, I know this is making him feel better, and I have never seen him behave this way in a vets office before! Even the in vogue antioxidant juices can be enjoyed by pets. A pure product that does not contain any harmful sweeteners and has high ORAC score fruits like Ningxia Province gogi berry, can be a nice adjunct to a species-appropriate diet for dogs and cats. Carnivores will accept a tiny amount of this type of supplement and the healthful energy that it provides when combined with a starch-free, meat-based diet. This is great for countering the free radical damage that is ongoing during chronic disorders such as liver disease, allergies or cancer. Food is energy medicine? Well, of course! The purpose of food is to feed the mitochondrial furnaces in every cell of our bodies and produce ATP, the commerce of cellular energy. Several vitamins are antioxidants. Vitamin E protects cell membranes by

donating protons to neutralize the free radicals and prevent cellular damage. Vitamin C protects the cytosol interior by replenishing to the vitamin E the two protons that it has lost. Glutathione enters the picture and the cycle goes on . This is why it is vitally important that our pets ingest fresh food! Typically, homeopathy, reiki and animal communication are viewed as energy healer modalities. Many homeopathic remedies have been given mainstream-type names and are not recognized by the users as energy medicines at all. Countless sport dog enthusiasts rely on Traumeel and Zeel supplements, popular homeopathics that are combination human remedies that seem to provide the needed relief for many dogs with soft tissue injuries or arthritic joints. Teachers offering classes or sessions to pet parents for reiki or animal communication are busy and thriving in todays open-minded, pet-loving societies. Integrative or holistic veterinarians and alternative practitioners who can provide energy healing expertise under the guidance of a veterinarian are in great demand. These people realize that there are deep forces at work, which can be identified and balanced if we just dare to look. Energy healing has become a necessary method of aid for pets that are suffering from chronic ills in the toxic world around them.

What are assistive listening devices?

By Dr. Douglas Kloss
earing aids are designed to help individuals hear better. While they make it easier in day-to-day situations, there are certain communication needs that cannot be met with just a hearing aid. Many times, these situations involve telephone, radio and television usage. Special devices assistive listening devices have been developed to solve these problems. Assistive listening devices can help increase the loudness of a desired sound, like a television or telephone.

digital and analog phones, and is best for individuals with moderate to severe hearing loss. The second type, a portable amplifier, is an option for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss and can increase sounds up to 30 decibels. These devices attach to the headset on a telephone and make it simple to make conversation louder or softer.

Amplified telephone

Amplified phones are specifically designed for people with hearing loss, allowing users to turn up the volume as necessary to hear speech clearly. Equipped with special features, many amplified telephones can make it easier to hear high-pitched noises. In the event the individual with hearing loss is soft spoken or struggles to hear their own speech, some telephones can amplify outgoing speech to make it easier to be heard. Amplified telephones are available in both household and cellular models. These phones typically have more features than basic phones, like caller ID, large number keys and speakerphone. Some phones also have the capabilities to work with a headset, photo dialing, backlit keypads, answering machine or wall mounts. Often, phones also have special alerts or noises to notify the user if its not hung up correctly. Additionally, if an individual needs to utilize amplified technology at home and work, a telephone amplifier should be considered. This device works to increase the volume of the phone the person already owns. There are two types of telephone amplifiers available. The first, an in-line amplifier, is compatible with both

Hearing aid compatible phones

Since 1988, it has been required by law that telephone manufactures produce wireline models that are compatible with hearing aids. This generally works in two different ways, either acoustic or telecoil coupling. Acoustic coupling allows sounds around the user to be received and amplified. This type of amplification can pick up both ambient or background noise. Telecoil coupling is usually best for individuals with severe or profound hearing loss because it blocks the unwanted noise and amplifies desired sounds. Digital or wireless phones can pose a high level of interference if the devices arent compatible. Electromagnetic energy is transmitted through these types of devices and can cause issues in hearing aids. A rating system has been created to determine the compatibility. Other options to consider would be speakerphone and speechto-text capabilities. These types of services could help an individual with hearing loss communicate more easily or freely. To determine

television programming without having to adjust the volume to a level higher than others in the room might need.

Assistive listening devices for televisions

In addition to talking on the telephone, many individuals with hearing loss can have trouble clearly understanding or hearing the television. Modern hearing aids equipped with wireless capabilities can help make it easier to adjust the television volume without turning it up too high. Individuals with these devices can stream television dialog using Bluetooth technology. There also are television amplifiers, which work with and without hearing aids, and do not require an earphone socket. A television amplifier doesnt affect the overall volume of the television, so it remains an enjoyable experience for everyone watching. This device works by attaching a small microphone to the television set with Velcro. This is then connected through a wire that feeds to a set of headphones or a neckloop that is transmitted directly to the hearing aids. Additionally, neckloops, or induction loops, can help improve the overall clarity of sound when used with a telecoil on hearing aids. Earphones or headphones that plug into a televisions earphone socket are also an option for individuals with hearing loss. TV ears, a wireless headset, can also be purchased to help the individual with hearing loss and their television listening experience. In the event an individual with hearing loss isnt ready to purchase a device to help amplify television sounds, closed captioning is one of the most popular options to fully understand

FM systems

An FM system is a wireless technology that makes it easier for people with hearing aids to understand what others are saying in noisy situations like classrooms or public events. The FM system is made up of a transmitter microphone, which is used by the person speaking in front of an audience, and a receiver, which is used by the individual with a hearing aid. FM systems are advisable for individuals who struggle to clearly understand speech in loud situations.

Hearing aid streamers

Hearing aid streamers are manufacturer specific devices that work with your brand of hearing aid to bring all different types of audio signals directly into your hearing aids. These devices will stream your television, cell phone, landline telephone and music player, as well as other peoples voices in noisy situations (via a mini-microphone), directly into your personal hearing aids. The way these devices work varies by manufacturer. These are generally the best-sounding devices available because the sound is specifically tailored to your personal hearing loss settings in your hearing aids.

Smart backpack use

By Amber Erickson, DC, MEBW
he hustle and bustle of back-to-school season is well behind us, and kids have settled into their school routines. Now that things have settled down, parents may have more time to check out their childrens backpack use. While backpacks are a great way for children to learn organizational skills and display their unique sense of style, they can also be a contributor to back, neck and spine issues.

A backpack should always be worn equally over both of the childs shoulders.
It seems that children are carrying more weight than ever before, but are they doing it correctly? There are some simple guidelines to follow that can protect your childs back for years to come. The time to create healthy habits is when children are young and first beginning to attend school. The backpack is worn over the spine, which is a bony column made up of vertebrae with a disc between each one to act as a shock absorber. When too much weight is applied to the back, gravity will pull us backwards. This means that the head and neck will come forward to compensate for the weight pulling the child backwards, which stresses a still-developing cervical spine. This can lead to headaches and backaches, in addition to more serious problems developing later in life. Many kids like to wear backpacks over one shoulder, which is too much weight being unequally distributed. A backpack should always be worn equally over both of the childs shoulders. This means that the straps should be adjusted so the backpack is distributing equal weight on the shoulders. It should be adjusted so that it falls right in the small of their back. Straps that are too long will put excess stress on the childs low back, while straps adjusted too tight will pull on their shoulders. The straps will slip and slide as

the backpack wears in, so this is something that parents and/or teachers should be checking. Most nylon backpacks should have the strap adjustments checked every three to four weeks; leather straps far more frequently. Padding on the straps can often help a child who weighs less be more comfortable. Backpack weight should never exceed 15 percent of the childs bodyweight (10 percent is a better number). This means if your child weighs 96 pounds, his backpack should ideally weigh 9.5 to 14 pounds. The best way to monitor the backpack weight is to have the child stand on the scale without the backpack and note the weight. Then hand them the backpack without them moving off of the scale and note the new weight. Simply subtract the two weights, and you are left with the weight of the backpack. Too much weight can be avoided by having the child leave heavy textbooks at school or at home, and by only transporting the books they need. If many books need to be transported daily, a suitcase backpack on wheels may be the best option. As schools become more and more technological, books may soon become a thing of the past as they are replaced by computers, iPads and electronic book readers. This may lead us to a whole new set of postural problems!

What a pain in the foot!

By Wendy Halfpap, LMT
any people suffer from pain on the soles of their feet, which is commonly a symptom of a condition called plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is the overuse or the wearing of the connective tissue of the plantar surface of the foot, which can result in a burning pain, muscle weakness and micro tears at the heel. The tissue becomes inflamed, has poor circulation and gets very thick in chronic cases, if not treated. In general, athletes or persons over the age of 40 are more prone to getting plantar fasciitis due to years of wear and tear on their feet. The plantar fascia attaches to the bottom of the heel and merges into the arch. It functions as a bowstring during the mid-stance phase of walking or movement. The same function occurs when standing up on your toes with weight bearing on the top bones or metatarsals of the foot. This condition can occur from excessive inward rotation, also referred to as supination or being flat-footed, with the force being put on the inner arch. It may also occur from walking on the outside of your foot, otherwise called pronation, putting stress on the outer region and Achilles tendon. The fascia in most cases may feel very thick, hard or gritty. Activities such as dancing, running on hard surfaces, standing for long periods of time, overtraining or improper form can cause this condition. Some factors that may

predispose you to plantar fasciitis are weight gain, especially during pregnancy, tight calf and shin muscles, or footwear that is too flexible, stiff or simply not giving you enough arch support. Massage therapy is recommended, and can reduce pain and improve tissue health after only a few treatments. The treatment itself involves more than just the feet. Structures surrounding the feet are addressed first. A specific muscle called the tibialis anterior attaches just below and to the right of the knee, runs along the side of the tibia, crosses the ankle and ends again to the inner arch. If this muscle is tight, it will start to tug and pull on both the foot and the knee at the attachment points. Trigger point therapy is used on the shin to trace the pain to its source by locating any hyperirritable spots that are tender to the touch and to release them while stabilizing

the arch of the foot. Its also important to reduce spasms in the lower leg by focusing on the Achilles tendon using direct compression and moderate to deep pressure until it releases. Then massage is applied directly to the plantar surface of the foot, slowly starting at the heel and working up into the arch to break up and soften the restrictions in the fascia, and to reduce the sensitivity that causes the pain. Finally tension is relieved in the shortened calf muscles, which allows them to relax and lengthen, and no longer puts pressure on the Achilles tendon. Plantar fasciitis may have a slow onset, and it progressively gets worse if not treated. Massage therapy can help with lasting results and benefits. A clients testimonial speaks volumes: This is my seventh year working here as safety manager. This is my first day back at work since my massage last Friday, and its the very first day I have EVER walked around, doing my job PAIN FREE! So lets give our feet the attention they deserve and keep moving.

Dance your practice

By Alyssa Konda

oga has a reputation for being a very traditional and ancient practice with calming, meditative music to balance the mood and concentration, while focusing on the breath linking with movement. A practice in unity of breath and movement. That tradition and authenticity in the practice maintains that sacred element that makes yoga a life practice. However, in that rigidity of tradition, a realization of the modern world may need to be taken into consideration. The idea of recreating a tradition to meet the changes in lifestyles of the modern century. Commonly, people express the difficulties in getting up in the morning to attend their routine yoga class. They may have had a long day at work or childrens activities long into the evening the day before; whatever the excuse, its typically related to the hectic, daily grind of general life. This is usually when mental and physical stress shows itself in the body. So why not change up the routine? Maybe that usual yoga practice needs a change of beat! A very popular trend in fitness is fusion classes: Pilates meets boxing, samba meets aerobics, aerial arts meet yoga, and so many more. Its only natural that pop music would merge into the traditional yoga class. Yoga doesnt have to be that quiet, subdued practice. Dance your practice. A

Downward-Facing Dog, when held for a few breaths, is just that, but add a figure eight motion to the hips and wag your doggy tail becomes the new yogi catchphrase. The strengthening and grounding Warrior II pose becomes Dancing Warrior with a bob of a head and a shimmy of the shoulders. Why shouldnt there be dancing in yoga?

Turn down the lights, turn up the music and allow free movement within the practice. Just like the downtown club, the DJ turns up the music and everyone dances. Any form of dance is welcome. The idea is to listen to the body and flow with the rhythm from the music. Letting go of

Ho-hum crashers for your life!

By Carol Michalski, MSW, LCSW

You need a ho-hum crasher!

This was my husbands advice after looking at my material. The experienced presenter went on to explain that a ho-hum crasher is something that adds a spark to your presentation and elevates it beyond boring! I started thinking about applying the idea of a ho-hum crasher to clients concerns that their lives were not what they had hoped. So, I came up with a few ways to inject some passion into your life and eliminate the ho-hum. Give one (or more) a try!

1. Use W. Clement Stones successful call to action: Do it now!

3. Rediscover what is important.

Enjoy today. Today is the only day we can be sure of. If there is something you want to do, make it happen, now.
2. Turn off the TV and the Internet!

How many hours do we spend in front of those screens? Moderate your use and find other things to do. Get outside into nature.

REINVENTION
Life | Work | Relationships

Life Coach

Carol Michalski, MSW, LCSW

There isnt time to do everything, so make time for the things that are meaningful to you; those that bring you energy and joy. Make a list of everything that is important to you. Add many of the things you want to do in life (things about which you are always saying someday I am going to do this). Then cut the list down to five things. This is your core list. Focus on these things and make time for them. This might mean that sometimes a chore doesnt get done, or it gets done in a way that is good enough.
4. Learn new skills.

I am passionate about working with clients to help them enhance their lives, work performance and relationships.
WORKING TOGETHER WITH MY CLIENTS TO CREATE A CUSTOMIZED PLAN SO THEY CAN:
Enhance their careers Deepen their relationships with others Increase their ability to effectively communicate Set boundaries and limits for work, home and life Become assertive without conflict Deal with stress effectively and creatively Survive divorce Live with illness Experience the power of REINVENTION

Upgrade yourself constantly! It is satisfying and gratifying to constantly move forward instead of standing still.
5. Break out of ruts.

Are you a creature of habit? I am remembering the old Seinfeld episode where George is in a rut and is advised to do the opposite. He changes his seat in the diner, and this creates a seismic shift in his life! Take a different route to work or listen to music instead of talk radio. Get a new perspective.
6. Take a break from watching the news.

This can seem hard at first, if you are a news junkie (I admit that I am!), but it helps you rebalance your perspective. Try to remember that for every sensational,

negative story there are many more stories about unsung heroes who commit great, compassionate acts daily!
7. Do nothing.

10. Dont take yourself so seriously.

Dance your practice continued from page 17

In addition to doing more things we enjoy, there is value in doing nothing as well. Learn how to be still, to be quiet.
8. Become interested in others.

You can make more friends in two months by becoming more interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get people interested in you. Dale Carnegie Volunteer, talk to old people, chit chat with people in the checkout line at the grocery store. Become truly curious about someone elses story.
9. Be in the moment.

There is photo of Albert Einstein sitting on his porch wearing big, fuzzy bunny slippers! This image speaks to me about our need to lighten up. If the guy who discovered the theory of relativity can have a sense of humor about himself, we sure can. So live today with passion and gusto! Its the one day you are sure you are going to have. Dont let it pass you by! I love this quote from a poster featuring Wallace, the pit bull, a rescue dog who became a Frisbee dog champion and then fought a long battle with cancer: In life you either do or you dont. I did!
Carol Michalski, MSW, LCSW, has her own practice in the unique Hide House in Bay View, Wis., where she provides customized, professional life coaching services to individuals who want to enhance their lives, careers or relationships! judgment and competition, and focusing within. The music is just the backdrop to the expression of the practice. Even with dance, the focus comes back to the unity of breath and movement. There is a lot of rigidity in everyday life with work, school and home. A yoga practice should offer a place to release the stresses of modern, daily life. For some people, that release comes from a heated room where they can sweat with the movement. Others may prefer the peacefulness that comes from the traditional practice of movement without sound. A yoga practice introducing upbeat rhythms is just another version of the practice.

he herb peppermint, a cross between two types of mint (water mint and spearmint), grows throughout Europe and North America. Peppermint is often used to flavor foods, and the leaves can be used fresh or dried in teas. Today, peppermint oil is used as a folk or traditional remedy for nausea, indigestion, cold symptoms, headaches, muscle and nerve pain, stomach problems and bowel conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. Essential oil of peppermint may be found in very small doses in capsule or liquid forms. The essential oil can also be diluted with another oil and applied to the skin.

What the science says

Although there are some promising results, there is no clearcut evidence to support the use of peppermint oil for other health conditions.

Results from several studies suggest that peppermint oil may improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. A few studies have found that peppermint oil, in combination with caraway oil, may help relieve indigestion, but this evidence is preliminary.

Peppermint oil appears to be safe for most adults when used in small doses. Possible side effects include allergic reactions and heartburn. Capsules containing peppermint oil are often coated to reduce the likelihood of heartburn. If they are taken at the same time as medicines such as antacids, this coating can break down more quickly, thus increasing the risk of heartburn. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Be true to your (soul) school to obtain healing in life

By Kathy Clegg, MA, CDC
ast month, I wrote about lifes emotional stressors that manifest disease in the cells of our bodies. Louise Hay, author of You Can Heal Your Life, wrote of this mind/body healing connection over 30 years ago and research continues to substantiate the claim. Having experienced a personal family health crisis this month, Id like to delve deeper into healing our bodies from the perspective of hand analysis coaching through soul schools. In the soul psychology of hand analysis, there are four schools of learning: service, love, wisdom and peace. Knowing the one were enrolled in (through fingerprint decoding) helps us know how to live life with less stress and disease. To illustrate, let me tell you about four of my clients, all with a history of cancer. Each has entered this lifetime with a different foundation. Lets start with Susie, who finds herself in the school of service. Despite dealing with metastasized breast cancer, she still has the driven desire to help others. In her life, she constantly thinks and does for others putting their needs first, showing up on their behalf, organizing her thoughts and actions around helping them feel better basically doing, doing, doing until shes exhausted while barely making her own ends meet. Neglecting her own self-care, she struggles with sleeplessness, intense stress, anger and other emotional issues that have been stored in her cells, compounding her illness. Then theres Lisa, whos in the school of love. Constantly stuffing her feelings, she disregards her authentic emotions by rationalizing, explaining and justifying others actions, as well as her own. She denies being treated badly or blames another for her relationship struggles, which could have been avoided if she had expressed her true feelings early on. The desire to be liked and loved causes her to numb out or eventually overreact, creating a sense of overwhelm and numerous relationship complications. Willy is in the school of wisdom. Hes the life-long learner: an eager student for life, who attends seminars, gets advanced degrees and is unaware that hes using his intelligence to insulate from others and from life. He often finds himself an observer, taking too long to make a decision, to change careers, to start his business or to ask for a date. He rationalizes his perfectionist tendencies until

opportunities have passed him by, leaving not only life unchanged, but also him feeling stuck and empty. Finally, theres Polly, whos in the school of peace. She often feels out of balance on this earth; on the adrenalin or professional slacker teeter-totter. At lifes worst, shes prone to an addiction, which in her case has gone from drinking to excessive meditation, because these

easons change, but growing food at Growing Power remains the same. Thanks to our two hundred acres of local food production, were able to bring you fresh, locally grown food year-round. As the cold weather quickly approaches, our staff is gearing up for the winter phase of sustainable food production. At Growing Power, this means truckloads of active hot mix compost are being distributed throughout Milwaukee to the hoop-houses that grow food year-round. Our signature hot mix is a combination of decomposing spent brewery grains and wood chips. Over the past 20 years, our organization has composted almost 2 million tons of food and organic waste, and through it all, we have learned how to create certain types of compost, including our remarkable hot mix, which we use as a source of heat and fertility for our plants! The hot mix is lined along the inside and outside of our hoop-houses to provide insulation and a buffer from the cold. We also pile loads of this naturally hot mixture into the four corners of each hoop-house. The warmth emanating from the active compost piles is captured in the hoop-houses to keep the soil and air relatively warm. If needed, our staff will rebuild the raised garden beds by integrating hot mix into the soil, which keeps the plants and their roots even warmer. The result is mind-blowing! Fresh, tasty, locally grown food is available in the dead of winter! This food is then distributed through our retail store, our year-long farm stands, our Farm to City Market Basket program, our deliveries to stores, restaurants and business cafeterias, and our supply

common sense in addition to countless research findings will tell you that children are more attentive and better prepared to learn when they have eaten fresh, nutritious food. Growing Power is not only growing food, but also minds, every day of the year. We understand the need for fresh, affordable and locally grown food is not a seasonal phenomenon. Growing Power is committed to bringing our food production systems to scale to encourage our community to source at least 10 percent of the food eaten on a regular basis from local producers, such as ourselves. It takes an integrated sustainable food system to do this, and everything from the food waste collected and composted to the harvesting and packaging of the food must be considered. Although we understand the warm, sunny days of summer are over, we have found a way to use natures amenities to keep providing good food throughout the year. We welcome this winter, knowing that our food production will continue and that local children and their families will have uninterrupted access to fresh, locally grown and affordable food. She avoids pursuing a job using her much-needed holistic gifts because shes held back by painful emotions and survival fears, and she dreads having too much responsibility in the world. With each clients soul school identified through hand analysis, I coach them to see and clear their old patterns, and to then move forward with new skills of mastery. Susie Service is shifting her energy to serve herself first; metaphorically, shes putting her airplane oxygen mask on before helping her child. Shes learning to be self-ish, but with boundaries. Then, her service becomes incredibly rewarding verses one of servitude or self-indulgence. Knowing when to do and when not to do for others is her health cure. This takes practice and coaching guidance to discern and gain perspective. Lisa Love is learning to let go of her stuffed feelings by displaying and communicating her true feelings. By clearing past relationship emotions that got stuck in her body, creating disease, shes learning to live with integrity of heart and to break through the barriers. Loving who she is, seeing her own as well as others potential and creating true loving connection in relationships is bringing her healing. For Willy Wisdom, the objective is to move from evaluation to action. Not taking action brings him depression, boredom and an unfulfilled life that has resulted in stomach disease. He is learning to stop hiding out and, with support, take risks at full-out participation in life, so he can be fully alive! In this school, commitment defines success or failure in health and life fulfillment. Polly Peace is learning to breathe through her job panic to find her peace. With techniques of stillness, mindfulness, meditation, work/life balance, self-care routines, spiritual and emotional connection, and guidance, she trusts that she can handle emergencies and enjoys life as it is, reducing her stress and keeping her cancer free.

With personalized coaching tools, you can become master of a healthy physical and emotional body, and live a purpose-driven life of happiness and fulfillment.

Could massage therapy be the career change you knead?

By Heather Peterman

n 2005, the massage therapy profession exploded onto the scene as one of the hottest emerging job titles, according to the list of most-searched jobs on Salary.com. That year, the number of massage therapists in America skyrocketed to well over 100,000 from 24,000 in 1999. Every year since, massage therapy has continued to thrive as a dynamic and rewarding career. The latest statistics report that employment for massage therapists is expected to increase 20 percent over the period of 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. What does that mean? It means more job opportunities in a field that is in high demand. The stats dont lie, and they are just one reason massage therapy has earned its title as a dream job!

The evolution of a dream profession

The popularity of massage was just starting to grow in 2005, and the medical world was still highly suspect of accepting it as a valid modality to integrate into patient care. Back then, massages were something you treated yourself to while on vacation for relaxation, and, most likely, you went to a high-end spa to indulge. However, the dedication of many licensed therapists and the diligence of the major massage therapy associations in educating people on the proven benefits of massage have successfully changed this paradigm. According to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) 2012 national survey, the primary reason people received massage was for medical or health reasons. That being said, todays massage therapists are well-qualified individuals who are expected to work side by side with other health care professionals. Generally speaking, massage therapists specialize in soft tissue manipulation. They apply one or any combination of over 800
24
Natures Pathways | November 2013

different modalities to tissue and muscle to elicit changes both in the physical body and the psychological/spiritual body. A few of the most widely known and documented benefits of massage therapy include: reduction of pain; increased flexibility and mobility; increased sense of well-being; reduction of insomnia and improvement in quality of sleep; increased immunity; and increased production of serotonin and activation of the peripheral nervous system, both of which are helpful in managing depression. In addition to the benefits already listed, recent research has proven massage to be effective in the treatment of: Cancer-related fatigue. Low back pain. Osteoarthritis of the knee. Reducing post-operative pain. Boosting the bodys immune system functioning. Decreasing the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Lowering blood pressure. Reducing headache frequency. Easing alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Decreasing pain in cancer patients.

A day in the life of a massage therapist

Massage therapists spend the majority of their time in a tranquil and quiet setting, whether they are working in a spa, gym or hospital. That being so, it is a hands-on, physically demanding job that
www.naturespathways.com

requires the therapist to be present at all times and to give a lot themselves. Patients often present with complex health issues that require the therapist to apply what they have in their skill set and to think quickly on their feet to gain the results a patient needs. A therapist may spend the majority of their day in a dimly lit, peaceful room, but they most certainly are not the ones doing the relaxing.

Becoming a massage therapist

Work settings

There are job opportunities for qualified massage therapists in many different settings. Spas, gyms, hospitals, chiropractic clinics and physical therapy clinics all tend to have regular postings on job search sites like Monster.com and Craigslist. Many massage therapists also choose to go into private practice once they have gained the experience they need to succeed on their own.

it is also prudent to search for a school that offers a curriculum with a strong focus on the sciences, especially anatomy, physiology and pathology.

Financial success

Massage therapy can be a very lucrative career for therapists who choose to apply themselves and continue learning. It may take some hard work in the beginning to gain patients trust and to start earning referrals, but, with dedication, most talented therapists report handsome salaries.

Massage therapy regulations vary by state. In order to obtain licensure to practice as a massage therapist in Wisconsin, you must attend and graduate from a school approved by the Education Approval Board (EAB). There are a variety of choices and each one has its attributes. It is highly advisable to think about where your career path might lead you and contact each school you have interest in attending to identify its focus. Because of the increase in the job trend and the acceptance of massage therapy in the medical realm, it is also prudent to search for a school that offers a curriculum with a strong focus on the sciences, especially anatomy, physiology and pathology. Once you graduate from an EABapproved program, you will take your board examinations and apply for licensure with the state. In most cases, this can all be completed in a year or less!

Inulin? Whats that?

By Best Health Option Acupuncture & Wellness

nulin is not a form of insulin. Inulin is not some weird name for a diabetic sugar substitute. Inulin is not something you should be afraid of. Actually, you probably had some today and didnt even know it.

Inulin is a soluble (non-digested) fiber carbohydrate that passes through the small intestine to the colon, where it ferments and becomes healthy micro flora. Considered a prebiotic a non-digestive food source that stimulates growth or activity of

good bacteria that supports colon health, better known as lactobacillus (bifidus) inulin lowers blood triglyceride levels, does not markedly increase blood sugar levels, and increases absorption of calcium, magnesium and iron. Now you may be thinking, Great, but I have no desire to eat that, ever! Well, if you had a banana with breakfast or asparagus for lunch, or if youre thinking about artichokes or wheat bread for dinner, you have indeed eaten inulin. You may now be thinking, My colon is just fine with the fiber Im eating, so I dont need this inulin stuff. Manufactured inulin is a single ingredient taken out of a whole food and chemically refined. That inulin leaves a creamy feeling in the mouth and is used to make fiber palatable, without any taste or texture. High-fiber drinks? Inulin. Added fiber dairy products? Inulin. Extra fiber baked goods? Inulin. Studies show that diets that include inulin lower triglyceride levels1 and may in fact reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.2 More recent studies are identifying multiple diseases whose risk factors may be related to intestinal microbial imbalance too much bad bacteria, not enough good.3

So the real question is: Inulin in the natural form or inulin manufactured as an additive? There is much debate on whether the manufactured form of inulin is beneficial long term. However, foods that contain inulin have variable amounts, and most articles on inulin say you need 10-40 grams a day depending on your focus (lowering triglycerides vs. constipation). A small group study performed by the University of Minnesota, St. Paul identified that people can tolerate about 10 grams of natural inulin a day compared to 5 grams of manufactured inulin a day. Inulin in any form can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, but the study did find that those who had the chemically altered inulin complained of gas/bloating, nausea, flatulence, stomach cramping and diarrhea at a much higher level. The report also encouraged continued study of tolerance levels of food additives like inulin because their use is likely to continue to grow, and there is the potential for overuse.4 Some articles that promote the healthy growth of bacteria in the colon, the bifidus bacteria and lactobacillus, also identify that

while manufactured inulin helps proliferate the production of good bacteria, it may also stimulate growth of other bacteria such as klebsiella and certain yeasts like candida, both of which are not good for the body and could be potentially harmful. Mainstream food manufacturers, pressured to reduce calories, fat and sodium while increasing fiber and flavor, are using manufactured inulin in many products. Inulin can be found in high-fiber breakfast bars, ice creams and beverages, among other processed foods. The label may list inulin, chicory root extract, oligosaccharide or oligofructose. For example, a well-known fiber bar with 9 grams of dietary fiber lists chicory root extract as its top ingredient. The natural form of inulin is found in garlic, leeks, onions, a variety of other root vegetables, chicory or burdock root, Jerusalem artichokes, jicama, wheat, rye and barley. Does this mean no more chicory coffee? No more root vegetable soups? Of course not; eat what you like. Inulin in its natural form is beneficial, not harmful in any way, and adds to the taste of the food. People have sustained

on these foods for thousands of years. Making an informed choice about your food sources is important. Read your labels, omit or decrease your use of processed foods, eat foods that are in season, and remember: anything natural that has been separated from its original source and chemically altered to have an effect is no longer natural.

Meditation
The pathway to healing
By Richard Hanhardt, MS, MBA, BCSLC

ccording to a Harvard Medical School study conducted in conjunction with Sinai Hospital, medical doctors referred over six million patients for services such as deep breathing, yoga and meditation last year. Patients were referred twice as often for meditation training as for yoga. Meditation does seem to be gradually finding its appropriate place in Western health care, yet it is still not well understood, and many have tried, failed and given up the practice. At first glance, it doesnt seem to fit well into our culture. And yet it offers a real and tangible approach to healing both our bodies and our emotional struggles. Lets take a fresh look at the benefits of meditation:

A return to a younger time in our lives: In medita-

Physical benefits

Meditation is about healing. The well-documented benefits include: Lowered blood pressure. Better responsiveness to needed medications and less need for medication. Lowered cholesterol. Lowered blood toxins and immune system improvement. A lessening of the effect of addictions. Better control of blood sugar. Lowered stress-related chemicals. And many others!

Emotional benefits

The emergence of your compassion: As your medita-

tion practice develops, you will discover an increased ability to be compassionate in two ways: compassion for yourself and compassion for others. The weakening of negative emotions: We all have anger, depression, fear and anxiety at times in our lives. As we discover the center of our lives in meditation, these emotions will have less and less strength and control.
28

tion, a common experience is the re-emergence of memories of times when we were very happy as children and have now forgotten. This is one of the healing effects of the practice. Restoring our sense of purity: Most of us do not feel that we will ever feel pure again and, most often, we dont even think about it. But it is possible, and as we get to the center (which is part of meditation), we will find a place of purity we were not expecting. Slowing everything down: We move much too quickly in our culture, and we get in trouble when we are reactive in social situations. Meditation teaches us both how to slow down and how to listen carefully to others and our inner voices. Focus improves. The benefits last during the day: At first, we will only experience the benefits for short times during our practice time. But soon we will notice the peace and gentleness we have discovered for ourselves and others, and it will be a choice for us all day long. Happiness: If we combine the physical and emotional benefits, perhaps the best summary of the effects of meditation is happiness. In a University of Wisconsin study in which the electrical activity of the brain was studied in both masters of meditation (many thousands of hours) and similar people who did not meditate, it was discovered that the brains were
www.naturespathways.com

essentially the same except for the area of the brain that controls happiness, which had six times more electrical activity in the meditation masters. Let us return to examining the difficulty we have in Western cultures making meditation work for us. Traditionally, Eastern meditation came from many traditions, including Zen, Tibetan and Vietnamese Buddhism, and meditative prayer from Christianity. They have different paths and instructions, and some focus on sacred words or mantras, but most focus on breathing: the in-breath and the out-breath, and nothing else. This may be the problem for most of us: thinking of nothing is very, very hard to do, so we become impatient. So what do we do? The answer lies in finding a structured approach to meditation that has steps to be followed and a clear process to be used. This approach must have instructions and identifiable transitions because the process changes as we proceed. As we learn to meditate, the instructions and transitions are quickly memorized, and we will have an approach that is successful. Often we need to find an experienced teacher or meditator who can help us with the process. The effort to learn this approach will be well worth your search!

Protect your skin and scalp from winters wrath

By Rachel Warnock

heres a chill in the air; the dry cold of winter is fast approaching. In ayurveda, winter is known as vata season, and one must prevent that dry cold from taking root in their physiology. This means keeping a level of warm and moisture in the system; specifically, moisture

in the hair and skin, and warmth through good circulation. In ayurveda, the best way to combat that dryness and care for both hair and skin is with oil. In the case of hair, one uses coconut oil and has the option to mix it with herbal oils such as bhringaraj, amalaki, hibiscus

or brahmi. The lipids in the coconut oil nourish and strengthen the hair, hydrating it and preventing frizz and tangles. The herb bhringaraj is famous for encouraging hair growth, curbing baldness and, in some cases, reversing baldness. Amalaki and hibiscus are antioxidant rich and strengthen the hair at its base. iving an eco-friendly lifestyle is a choice that can pay dividends for years to come. Future generations and the planet those generations inhabit can benefit significantly from the efforts of their ecoconscious ancestors. But while the benefits of living eco-friendly lifestyles are substantial and long-lasting, the effort to initiate such lifestyles need not be so significant. Men and women who want to leave a healthy planet for future generations can do so by making a host of relatively minor adjustments to their daily lives. Embrace cloth bags. Plastic grocery bags are very convenient, but they are not very eco-friendly. Such bags are often discarded after use, leading to unnecessary waste, and the effort and energy it takes to manufacture and ship such bags is wasteful. Reusable cloth bags are a much more eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper or plastic grocery bags, and these bags can be taken along on trips to the grocery store, and on shopping trips to the mall or other retailers. Designate certain bags for the grocery store and others for shopping trips to the mall. This can drastically reduce the energy it takes to produce and ship plastic bags, especially when shoppers consider just how many plastic bags they discard over the course of a typical year. Use reusable items. Cloth bags are not the only items that can be reused. Items such as paper plates, paper napkins and

Sharing the harvest and holidays with your pet

By Kathleen Folz & Jordan Stamper

ts the time of year when kitchens are filled with the aromas of rich and warming foods. Apple cakes, pumpkin pies, stews, soups and traditional dishes delight our families, friends and ... pets? We consider our pets to be our companions and family members. Why wouldnt we want to share these wonderful meals with them? Many pet parents are advised not to offer people food to pets. We are warned that dogs and cats may suffer digestive upset or worse, or that theyll beg for food from our plates if we offer bites of steak or chicken now and then. Indeed, there are some things to consider when those eyes are pleading for a taste. People foods that are toxic to dogs and cats include: onions, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, chocolate, raw bread dough, alcohol and some artificial sweeteners. (For a complete list, contact your veterinarian or check www.aspca.org.). Pet parents should also avoid feeding their companions treats off their plates that contain ingredients they would normally avoid when choosing their daily healthy dog or cat foods. Salt, sugar and fats, for example, are often ingredients used in cooking for flavor. There are many wonderful foods we can safely share with our furry family members, however. Just use common sense when offering a new food. Only provide a small amount to make sure there is no digestive upset. To avoid weight issues, consider giving pets slightly smaller regular meals to compensate for the calories in the human food theyve eaten. Here are some food suggestions and tips for your dogs or cats during the holidays, or anytime! Green beans or peas can be steamed, cooled and added to your dogs regular meal. If youre baking pumpkin pie, plain organic canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) can be added to your dog or cats

food. Pumpkin can also be frozen in a hollow dog toy such as a Kong and given to your dog to keep them busy while guests are eating! Chicken, turkey or other poultry muscle and organ meats can be lightly cooked, chopped up and used in small amounts as a special topper for your dog or cat. Organ meats contain nutrients important to a carnivores nutritional needs. Never give cooked bones to your dog or cat! If youd like to make a special meal for your cat or dog, search for recipes that use ingredients you would want to find in your pets healthy food. Dr. Beckers Real Food for Dogs and Cats by Beth Taylor and Karen Shaw Becker, DVM, is a great cookbook with a wealth of information to help pet parents create healthy and balanced meals or occasional special treats. Look for treat recipes with healthy ingredients as well. Dehydrated dog and cat foods can be purchased and used to make nutritious meals and treats. Honest Kitchen, maker of dehydrated pet foods, offers a cookbook, Made out of Love, that incorporates its products as the basis for homemade dog and cat treats. Before company arrives, put the amount of healthy treats your dog or cat may have in a dish. Let family and friends know they may give only these treats to your pet. When the dish is empty, no more snacks should be given. This will allow your guests to share the holiday festivities without compromising your furry family members health and safety.

less commonly used, though when massaged into the scalp, it is beneficial for people with frequent headaches. Oiling the hair on a weekly or biweekly basis not only makes hair luxuriously soft and easy to manage, but also repairs damage caused by harsh products, dyes and hair dryers, while also preventing split ends. However, if a person has oily hair to begin with, it is not recommended that he/she follow this procedure. In the case of skin, sesame oil is the best option. It is warming and stimulating to the circulatory system. Sesame oil has a low density and is therefore able to penetrate all layers of the skin. Using an herbalized oil along with the sesame oil, provides added benefits. For example, ashwaganda, bala and shatavari are exceptionally nourishing, keeping skin supple, firm and young looking, while lemongrass and tulsi stimulate blood flow in the body. An oil with ashwagandha, bala, shatavari, lemongrass or tulsi is extremely beneficial for keeping your skin soft and hydrated during the winter months. The only times sesame oil shouldnt be used are on a skin condition and when there are is an abundance of heat in the body. Coconut oil is a good substitution in those instances. Applying the oil to the scalp or body is an equally important part of the equation. As the oil is massaged into the skin, blood flow is stimulated, toxins are loosened from the skin tissue, stress is reduced and endorphins go on the rise. This small act of selflove can go so far. For the body massage, it is best to begin with the chest, using circular motions on the breasts or pectoral muscles, moving outward from the heart, and again clockwise motions on the belly. Use long strokes on the arms and legs, and circular motions on the knees, elbows, shoulders and other joints. Be sure to get the feet and face, too! Typically the face just needs a light film, not the hydration therapy arms and legs may require. When applying oil to hair, start with the scalp and give a thorough head massage. Then proceed to apply the oil to the hair, making sure to get the tips. The bulk of the application should be geared towards the roots and scalp. Let it sit for at least three hours, or overnight if desired (lay a towel over the pillow or wear a shower cap). When ready, just wash it out with a gentle shampoo (may need to be done twice). In addition to this self-care routine, it is best to eat warm, lightly spiced foods to keep the chill of vata away. Vegetable soups spiced with pepper, celery seed, asafoetida, cumin, coriander and/or a bit of cayenne are excellent for warming the body and strengthening the circulatory system. When purchasing oils, one should always select organic unrefined oils from trusted companies. The herbs listed in this article are found in most vata or hair-type herbalized oils. For both skin and hair, mix the herbal oils with the coconut/sesame oil at a 1:3 ratio (1 part herbal oil, 3 parts coconut/sesame oil). Enjoy!

plastic cups are often taken for granted, but these items can only be used once. Over time, heavy usage of these items can add up to a significant amount of waste for landfills, and the production and transportation of such items is significant and wasteful. Men and women can reduce this impact by only relying on reusable items, such as washable plates, cloth napkins, and glass or plastic drinking glasses. It might mean a few extra dishes in the sink each night, but the benefit of these products is well worth the effort. Stop wasting water. Many people, knowingly or unknowingly, are guilty of wasting water. Homeowners may forget to turn off their automatic sprinklers on rainy days, while many people may keep the faucet running while brushing their teeth. Make an effort to reduce your water usage. Even something as simple as taking shorter showers in the morning can reduce your individual water consumption by thousands of gallons over the course of a typical year. Pay it forward. Perhaps the best way to make a positive impact on the environment for years to come is to instill a sense of environmental responsibility in your children. Explain to youngsters why youre bringing cloth bags to the grocery store, and why you turn the faucet off when brushing your teeth. Kids who learn to live an eco-friendly lifestyle at a young age will carry that way of life with them as they grow older, benefitting the planet for generations to come.

Lindsay Mercen, L.Ac.

Spreading Spreading Healing Healing Frequency Frequency in in the the Greater Greater Milwaukee Milwaukee Area Area
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year is quickly approaching. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect upon the things for which we feel fortunate. Health and happiness are primary among these! Like many Americans, you may find the holiday season to be stressful and not so wonderful. Overindulgence, sleep deprivation, viral exposure and winter chills take their toll on the body. Neck, shoulder, back and joint pain can lead to headaches and fatigue, all made worse by cold, windy, damp weather.

Basic science explanation

The next step is to select solutions to bring the body back into balance. Were all just a bunch of jiggly atoms made up of energy. This includes the food we eat, the supplements we take, and the products we absorb and ingest, Lindsay explains. In addition to acupuncture, she specializes in whole food supplementation and essential oils. Since product frequencies can be measured with the BioMeridian, Lindsay can select the supplement that is the best match for her patient and create a tailored treatment plan.

Root cause
Lindsay Mercen, L.Ac., owner of Healing Frequency Acupuncture, is offering a new way to help you get healthier. It is important to dig deep and find the root cause of any ailment in order to fully understand and treat the disorder, Lindsay explains, even natural, alternative therapies can act as Band-Aids, and only mask the true nature of pain and disease for a short time.

Taking the guesswork out of supplementation

Patients bring in their bags of supplements and together we test which ones they are responding to best, and then make changes for better results! Lindsay adds. Often patients are taking way too many supplements. Lindsay warns, Too much of anything can be harmful. Especially when using synthetic vitamins. When youre urinating fluorescent yellow from excessive vitamin B, it causes your body to work harder to flush it out of your system. The BioMeridian is a tool that can even help choose the proper dosage of many different nutrients.

Eastern medicine meets frequency technology

BioMeridian technology measures the frequency of meridians (energy pathways) and their associated tissues and organs to determine stress and functionality. Using this information in addition to a lengthy consultation and exam helps me choose how to focus my treatment protocol and recommendations at a deeper level for every patient, says Lindsay. The principle behind the BioMeridian technology is similar to muscle testing or dousing, but removes any subjectivity that may be present in those modalities. During an examination, Lindsay tests 28 different acupoints on the hands and feet with a stylus. A small electrical current (not a shock) is sent through each point, which is recorded and analyzed by the computer system in real time for the patient. They can watch and view where they are balanced or weakened by how much and whether it is an acute or chronic condition, Lindsay explains. She can also test for specific allergies, food sensitivities, molds and other environmental stressors.

Pets, too!
Pets can also benefit from BioMeridian testing. Lindsay is offering this service for pet owners at Animal Doctor Holistic Veterinary Complex in Muskego. There is an epidemic of allergies in pets today. If conventional blood analysis has left you more confused than when you started and your pet is still suffering, BioMeridian is a great way to get to the root of the problem, suggests Lindsay, who has personal experience within the veterinary field. It was her dog, Toby, a 3-year-old Pomeranian born with epilepsy, who made her a believer in Oriental medicine. When the side effects of conventional Western medicine caused severe pancreatic pain and liver damage, Tobys owners brought him into the Animal Doctor to be euthanized. Lindsay was

working there, alongside her mother, Dr. Jodie, a holistic veterinarian. After a dramatic diet change, Chinese herbs, whole food supplementation, acupuncture and acupressure, Toby surprised everyone and thrived for another seven happy years!

Eastern influence
As a result, Lindsay was drawn to the wisdom of ancient China. After attending veterinary courses on acupuncture and food therapy, she was hooked. She began her studies in Oriental medicine and traveled to China to experience the culture first hand. Four years later, she graduated magna cum laude from the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine, the second oldest school in the nation to certify Oriental medicine practitioners. She has been practicing at The Colour Bowl, an organic wellness spa in Mequon.

Reaching out further to the community

Lindsay is passionate about spreading knowledge, and witnessing the energy and transformation it creates within people, so she is spreading her Healing Frequency this season! She will be offering services in Menomonee Falls at Pravo Wellness Centre, alongside Dr. Matthew Grbich. In addition to patient services, Lindsay is also teaching wellness classes throughout the greater Milwaukee area (see sidebar). She is appreciative for the opportunities that allow her to expand her reach. This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for so much! I have not only my health and a wonderful, supportive family, but also an incredible network of like-minded individuals that I get to grow and work with, Lindsay says gratefully. If youre ready to try a new way to get to the root of an ailment that has been plaguing you or to achieve optimal wellness, call Lindsay at 414.698.6251 to schedule your consultation today!

Get the big idea all else will follow

By Dr. Ty Wade
o what is the big idea and what does it have to do with health? The big idea is simply that your body is self-regulating, self-healing and self-adapting. That means that we all possess a power within that is intelligent. Simply by accepting the big idea as a universal law, we can begin to recognize our God-given ability not only to survive, but also to thrive in our environment. Why is this idea so big now more than ever? Most people have been convinced that there is no innate intelligence, and that we live in a chaotic universe. This entails that we are doomed to the aging process, to become dust in the wind and wither away with age. The paradigm that health comes from the outsidein has been disproven as an effective approach. The United States makes up 5 percent of the worlds population, yet we consume over 60 percent of the worlds medication. If health came from a synthetic drug, then we SHOULD be the healthiest society in the history of the world. But it does NOT, and we are NOT! Shift your paradigm today! Get the big idea, know that health comes from the inside out and that all else will follow. That means to accept that your body possesses the God-given ability to heal, so your lifestyle choices either promote or discourage that power. Once you get the big idea, what will follow are the details that will CREATE health, rather than destroy it. All else follows includes the secret to abundant health and prosperity. If youre able to measure your health by the balance

found between mind, body and spirit, as opposed to the absence of symptoms, then you get the big idea. Lifestyle choices can be overwhelming, so making small changes over time will lead to large shifts in your paradigm and, ultimately, your health. Small hinges open large doors! Mind, body and spirit balance is the truth for maximizing our true health potential. So remember to have the truth in your mind, which is the big idea that your body has the power to heal and create health. Express your life through your body by exercising, eating correctly (no, we are not recommending the food pyramid here), getting the proper amount of sleep, avoiding toxins, thinking positively, etc. Finally, have love in your heart (spirit). Your heart is not just a pump that moves around, it is closely linked to your emotion state and reacts to external/internal stresses in more ways than we realize.

Pet owners beware

Overexposure to chloride-based ice melters can harm your pets
By Patti Beres

ame!

iving in Wisconsin means you are no stranger to harsh winters, and neither are your pets. When the snow begins to fly, plows, shovels, snow blowers and sidewalk salts become the familiar friends that keep our lives moving. Old man winter blows a mean north wind in our state, but we have learned well how to keep our regular routines despite cold and icy challenges. Furry family members, sometimes seen wearing fluffy doggie sweaters, also rely on their necessary daily routines, including outdoor activity. Whether or not snowfalls make you and your four-legged friend romp with delight like pups, overexposure to common salt-based ice melt products can have some not so fun effects on your pet. Chloride-based (salt-based) ice melters are used extensively around homes during the winter to remove ice and snow from areas where foot traffic is likely, such as on sidewalks, driveways, patios and porch steps. Given the number of homes where pets are present, the potential exists for these valuable members of the family to be exposed to these products, even if the pet is wearing this seasons fashion forward doggie booties. Here are some tips to help pet owners better understand the potential effects of accidental overexposure to these products, and what alternatives are available. Realistically, there are three ways a pet can come into contact with chloride-based ice melters: 1) They can walk on the solid particles or hydrated (liquid) product; 2) They can consume the product either accidentally or intentionally; or 3) The solid particles, dust or hydrated product may get into their eyes, ears, noses, mouths and fur. Each scenario is worth a closer look, noting that consistent contact over the long winter months can become quite common and go without notice. Even slight exposure to chloride-based ice melters can irritate and harm paws, skin and eyes without proper attention.

Skin and footpad contact

Chloride-based ice melters present a low hazard to skin when used as directed, as brief contact is essentially nonirritating. Therefore, single, short exposures to the solid particles most likely will not cause a problem to the feet of dogs or cats. However, prolonged (hours) or repeated contact may cause skin irritation; in some cases even burn. Solid particles may become lodged between toes or caught in the fur surrounding the foot pads, which would prolong contact and increase the potential for irritation, as well as ingestion. Additionally, if the product has hydrated (becomes liquid), the salt solution may cause the footpads to become dry and cracked. Therefore, chloridebased ice melters should be used carefully in areas where animals have routine access, or not at all in areas where prolonged contact could occur, such as in a kennel. Owners are advised to inspect and wash their pets foot pads after contact to remove any intact solid particles or salt solution. In the unlikely event that severe irritation is observed, a veterinarian should be consulted.

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms These symptoms are more likely to occur in women with ovarian cancer than the women in the general population. Bloating, Gas Pelvic or Abdominal Pain Difficulty Eating or Feeling Full Quickly Urinary Symptoms (Urgency or Frequency) A woman who has these symptoms almost daily for more than a few weeks should see her doctor, preferably a gynecologist. Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance 13825 W. National Ave., Suite 103 New Berlin, WI 53151 Have an annual vaginal/ rectal pelvic exam, and if you have symptoms, ask for a transvaginal ultrasound and a CA 125 blood test.

Consumption

With respect to exposure via consumption, most pets probably will not intentionally consume a chloride-based ice melter. However, it only makes sense to store the product in a manner that eliminates any opportunity for exploring pets to conduct a taste test. The most likely method of ingestion is when they lick their feet or fur. If incidental ingestion does occur, it is not likely to cause injury, as the toxicity of this product is low. However, continued consumption in small amounts over time could cause the build-up of overexposure effects. If a pet inadvertently consumes large amounts, gastro-intestinal irritation or ulceration may occur. In this case, vomiting should not be induced, but if it occurs naturally, offer the animal plenty of drinking water and consult a veterinarian.

Eye contact

To avoid potential eye contact, pet owners are advised to keep pets away when the product is being applied to surfaces. Dust, residue and hydrated product can also potentially adhere to any exposed area of pet contact. If the product does contact the eyes, or if it settles on other areas, some irritation can be expected. The product should be gently washed out of the eyes or other areas if such exposure does occur. If washing measures are not taken, prolonged contact may result in more extensive injury. Another way to prevent overexposure is to avoid using chloridebased ice melt products and seek innovative, chloride-free alternatives, which are 100% biodegradable and designed to be both pet and environmentally friendly. Ice melting products are currently available that melt quickly up to zero degrees, and are water soluble, easy to clean and less damaging to surfaces. This winter, when considering the safety of your winter walkways, you can easily make choices that are safer for your pets and the environment, too!

My aching knees unveiled

By Hope Zvara

id you know that the average age of a knee replacement is 70 years old, and that many people between the ages of 50 and 80 are going under the knife? Being the largest joint in the body, the knee is a very complex and regularly tweaked joint, giving many causes for pain and discomfort.

Understanding the knee

The knee is a pivotal hinge joint. Basically, it is four bones the femur (thighbone), the tibia and fibula (lower leg bones), and the patella (kneecap) held together by ligaments. These structures, along with the meniscus, bursae and tendons work together to support almost our entire body weight. All of the quadriceps (4 total) feed down towards the knee, and the quadratus femoris feeds into the rectus femoris tendon, as the other three heads also feed into tendinious tissue surrounding the knee. These same muscles also feed up and surround the hip and pelvis, as do the hamstrings on the back of the knee joint, and the muscles below the knee feed from the foot to the knee. Think of everything as connected. Ankle is connected to the knee (with tendinious issue below and above), which is connected to the hip.

And many today confuse arthritis for inflammation of either the joint in the bursitis, which cushions the knee, or the tendons. How does this come about? Most often this can happen due to lack of healthy mobility, improper range of motion or stability, old injuries or lack of flexibility. Many students I work with fear flexibility, especially after a surgery or knee replacement, but in reality, the flexibility will be what saves the knee and preserves it after a replacement.

Are you vulnerable to knee pain?

Why is this important to understand?

When having some basic knowledge of anatomy, you can begin to follow the dotted lines to figure out if your knee pain is really hip or foot pain. In working with hundreds of bodies over the years, I have found that, in many cases, what is experienced as knee pain is actually referred pain. Referred pain, sometimes called reflective pain, is discomfort that does not come from the location of sensation, but rather from another area. People often get referred pain in the knees from having tight hips, and restrictive feet or ankles.
40
Natures Pathways | November 2013

Answer these questions to determine if you may be at risk for knee issues: Are your calves tight and stiff? Do your ankles lack mobility and stability? Are your hips tight, or quadriceps and hamstrings restrictive? Do you have asymmetrical development in your legs right to left or back to front (hamstring to thigh)? Do you suffer from a slack pelvic floor, which will negatively affect the knees? Do you pronate or supinate? Do you struggle with weight by 25 pounds or more? Have you ever had a foot, knee or hip surgery where now you harbor scar tissue? These are just a few causes for concern, among many more.
www.naturespathways.com

So what can you do?

1. For starters, get your shoes off and stretch out your feet. 2. Perfect proper squatting patterns that promote knee health

and stability (e.g., neutral foot first, toes forward and then work from there). 3. Get new shoes. It may be tempting to get the really cushy ones, but if you are stretching your calves and hamstrings, and getting around barefoot more, there may be less of a need for them. 4. Stretch out your hips. Try yoga poses like Runners Lunge, Pigeon, Figure Four and Bound Angle. 5. Open your thighs and groin. 6. Practice balance poses and go for walks safely on uneven terrain to get your muscles thinking. 7. Never lock your knees. 8. Consider a massage or reflexology appointment. 9. Try mayo fascia release like foam rolling. 10. Always, always, always use your pelvic floor and deep core muscles for support and stability. Because replacement body parts are never as good as the originals!

Make your body a calorie and fat burning machine with interval training!
By Courtney Fryatt, M.Ed., NASM-CPT, WLS

re you bored with your workouts or feeling that you need a change? Would you like to burn more calories in a shorter amount of time? High intensity interval training (HIIT), once thought of as a training method for elite athletes,

has become an increasingly popular workout method. Despite the intimidating name, HIIT, when done correctly, can be tailored to fit almost any exerciser.

What is interval training?

203 W. Wisconsin Ave., Pewaukee 262.422.5704 cfryatt4@gmail.com www.fryattfitnessandnutrition.com www.facebook.com/FryattFitness www.twitter.com/FryattFit

Interval training is alternating bursts of intense physical activity with bursts of lighter or lower-intensity activity. If you are a walker or runner, you could increase your speed for a short period of time and then return to your normal pace to recover, before repeating the intense bout again. While using weights or doing any type of resistance training, think of increasing your workload and using more muscle groups to rev up your workout routine. One might do three exercises in a row with no rest, or one exercise at a high intensity for half the time that you might normally do it.

Choose lighter fare this Thanksgiving

tatistics indicate the average Thanksgiving dinner exceeds 3,000 calories. That is more calories than a person should eat in an entire day, much less a single meal. Many people admit to indulging on bigger portions and more fattening foods come the holiday season, but choosing some lighter fare this Thanksgiving can make the meal healthier without sacrificing taste. Although there are staples of Thanksgiving dinner, many lowcalorie foods can be included to make the meal healthier. The following are a few healthy substitutions or alterations holiday hosts can make when preparing their Thanksgiving feasts. Trim down the turkey. Play up the main course with aromatic seasonings or unexpected flavors. Use garlic, olive oil and basil to add a boost of flavor to turkey without having to rely on butter or salt. Marinate the bird with lemon juice and citrus marmalade for a sweet, yet pungent flavor. Consider omitting the bread stuffing and making a stew of roasted root vegetables instead. Opt for turkey breast. White meat of a turkey tends to have less fat and calories than the darker cuts. Serve turkey breasts only, which will not only cut down on calories, but also on the amount of time needed to cook the meal. Make homemade cranberry sauce. Taking the time to make your own cranberry sauce means you can control the ingredients. Cut down on the amount of sugar used in the recipe or substitute it with honey or molasses. Reduce the number of courses. Thanksgiving dinner often features multiple courses. Extra courses can be expensive, but such massive spreads also lead many people to overeat. Stick to two or three courses, and chances are guests will not miss the extra food.
www.naturespathways.com

Choose whole-grain breads. Sliced whole-grain breads or

rolls paired with an olive tapenade will be flavorful and such breads are healthier than white bread and butter. Flavor vegetables with herbs. Vegetables grilled or sauted with fresh herbs may be so flavorful they will not need added dressings that tend to be rich, or cream- or butter-based. Have a wide variety of vegetable side dishes available so guests can fill up on healthier fare rather than more calorie-dense items. Serve only low- or no-calorie drinks. Beverages can add a substantial amount of calories to Thanksgiving meals. Give guests the option of sparkling water or even diluted cider so theyre not filling up on sugary sodas or other high-calorie beverages. Serve fresh fruit for dessert. Create a fresh fruit salad that can be served in lieu of fatty cakes and pastries. Include other activities. Do not make the meal the centerpiece of the celebration. Plan activities, such as a game of football in the yard or a walk around the neighborhood. This places a smaller emphasis on eating while giving guests the opportunity to burn off some of their meal.

It takes just a drizzle of EVOO

By Jackie Zach

ou may have heard about the benefits of cooking with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), but just havent known how to incorporate it into your meal preparation. Well, youre in luck! In this article, we are going to get into the nitty-gritty of using EVOO in cooking. Lets start with a simple breakfast: eggs, toast and fresh fruit. Have you thought about cooking your eggs in EVOO? You can use EVOO that is unflavored or, for a little variety, try chili, oregano, truffle or even a refreshing orange flavor. Remember, EVOO has a smoke point of 350 to 375 degrees, so you want to cook the eggs on medium/medium-high heat. Drizzle orange EVOO and a little honey on your toast for something a little different. Drizzle your fruit with a bit of balsamic vinegar to make it an extra-special treat. Need a healthy snack during the day? Cut an apple into wedges or matchsticks, shave or cut some Manchego cheese into matchsticks, and toss with a drizzle of EVOO. Add some sea salt if youd like for a bit of a salty-sweet flavor. Try different EVOO flavors such as cinnamon or vanilla for different twists on a great snack. Want to jazz up lunchtime? Try drizzling sundried tomato or rosemary EVOO on a ham or turkey sandwich. Get some crusty bread or a sturdy bun, drizzle EVOO, add meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato, and voil! Add a drizzle of basil or lemon EVOO in a roasted tomato soup for a refreshing burst of flavor. Heres a great twist on a recipe that was featured on the show David Roccos Dolce Vita, episode entitled Beef Tenderloin con Balsamico (recipe at right). The recipe calls for olive oil, so use a plain or porcini EVOO. To deglaze the pan, the recipe calls for balsamic vinegar. Why not try an apple or pear balsamic vinegar for a change of pace? Add some whole wheat pasta drizzled with the porcini EVOO, and asparagus drizzled with lemon EVOO for a fast, easy and delicious dinner. For dessert, take your favorite brownie mix, substitute the same amount of chili or orange EVOO for the vegetable oil and bake. If
44

the chili is too spicy, use chili EVOO and plain EVOO. Using EVOO in your cooking is so easy and will make any dish an experience! As a substitute for butter, EVOO will also help keep you and your heart healthy on the inside. A win-win for everyone!

Beef Tenderloin con Balsamic

( Recipe courtesy of David Rocco)
Ingredients: cup extra virgin olive oil 2 large white cooking onions, thinly sliced 4 (8-ounce) beef tenderloins 1 cup balsamic vinegar Salt and freshly ground black pepper Directions: 1. Heat a skillet with 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil over medium heat and add the onions. Cook until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, for about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. If the pan is getting dry, add some water. Set aside. 2. On high heat, add the remaining extra virgin olive oil in another skillet and lay in the beef when the oil is hot. Sear both sides for about 30 seconds, turning only once. 3. Add the balsamic vinegar to the beef and deglaze the pan. Cook until the balsamic is reduced to a syrupy consistency. 4. Plate the beef tenderloins with the caramelized onions on top. Drizzle the beef with the balsamic reduction. Serve hot.

Make your body a calorie and fat burning machine with interval training! continued from page 42

As Lucy Fowler of The Cooper Institute in Dallas explains, A HIIT exercise program often entails a lot of resistance and compound exercises. Compound exercises are holistic in nature, and utilize more muscle and joint systems in large motion rather than a small, individual motion.

What can HIIT do for me?

Increase your fat-burning potential and total caloric

expenditure: HIIT workouts increase your fat-burning potential in less time than it takes to burn the same amount of calories doing your normal steady-paced routine. Even if you increase your intensity and heart rate for just a short time, youll burn more calories than you normally would if you maintained your normal pace or workout intensity. Also, HIIT training has a longer-lasting effect after you are done working out, meaning youll burn more calories as you recover from your training session than you would after a normal workout. Increase the efficiency of your workouts: You can achieve more in a 15-20 minute HIIT workout than you would jogging or walking on a treadmill for 45 minutes. Bring the excitement back to working out: Boredom is a major factor in why many people either dislike working out or stop all together. A HIIT workout brings the excitement back to exercise, revs up your intensity, makes your workouts go fast and cuts your training time in half. You dont need additional equipment: With HIIT, you can use the same equipment that youve been using or simply apply it to your existing walking/running routine. It is done at the pace you set for yourself to meet your own goals. Increase your aerobic capacity faster: As you continue to do HIIT workouts, your cardiovascular fitness will improve, and youll be able to exercise at a higher intensity for longer. According to a 2011 study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting, just two weeks of highintensity intervals improves your aerobic capacity as much as six to eight weeks of endurance training.

What are the risks with HIIT?

Every type of exercise has risk involved, and the same holds true for interval training. If you have not been exercising regularly or have cardiovascular and/or musculoskeletal concerns, you should consult your physician before beginning any type of exercise program. Also, you should start slowly by incorporating interval training into your routine no more than once per week. Be aware of overuse injuries, as you need to give your muscles enough time in between workouts to recover. Are you ready to increase your calorie burning potential? Do you want to get a quality workout in less time? Then give interval training a try! The possibilities are endless, and you will reach your fitness goals in a more timely and exciting fashion.

Preparing for Change of Season Storage Day

By Sam Kim

hen I see leaves turning colors, I know its time to pack away our summer clothing. As I mentioned in a prior article, most of us spend thousands of dollars on our

second skins. The investment can be substantial, particularly if we choose natural eco-fiber clothing, which is good for our health and the environment. Protect that investment by storing clothing properly. Involving children in a Change of Season Storage Day (CSS Day) helps teach them the importance of maintaining their things.

Getting ready for storage

The best time to pack away your clothing for the season is right In the week or two prior, sort items that will need dry or wet

after having them cleaned or laundered.

cleaning in advance. Plan the day that is best for drop off in order to have them back in time for CSS Day. This is a great time to purge unused, worn or outgrown clothing. Before washing, empty pockets of candy and do not use starch, as these will attract insects. Make sure all fabrics are completely dry after cleaning and that non-airtight containers are used to prevent mildew. Wash or dry clean even if youve only worn the item once. Your skin contains oils that are slightly acidic. If these oils remain in the fabric for extended periods, they will slowly break down 9:14 AM the fibers. Stains, particularly from perspiration, will set if left in the fabric too long. Avoid storing in cold basements or unheated attics, as temperature extremes and excess humidity will damage fabric. Instead, use a dry closet in the heated part of the home for storage.

Aromatic essential oils in cedar repel pests such as moths,

silverfish and carpet beetles. For cedar to be effective, you must be able to smell it. Cedar can be renewed with a gentle sandpaper rubdown. Dont allow fabric to touch the cedar. Protect clothing from the oils in the wood with quilt material or acid-free paper. Never use wallpaper or adhesive shelf paper to line storage trunks or shelves, as the backing will attract insects. Tight on space? Get creative. Store under beds or couches (clean first), in stand-alone wardrobes, under window seats, and in storage hassocks and bins.

Discard cardboard inserts or forms because they are acidic and

will damage the fabric, unless they are labeled acid-free, of course. Store wedding dresses in archival containers and separate the veil from the gown with archival tissue paper or fabric. Fold tablecloths, runners, napkins or quilts with acid-free tissue between the layers, and wrap the folded item completely in acid-free tissue before boxing in acid-free containers.

About pesticide mothballs

Avoid using insecticidal mothballs or crystals. If you must, do

Fabric handling

For specialty items like wedding or baptismal gowns and heir-

loom cloths, use archival storage. Archival means its free of acid, which breaks down fibers. Linen cloth should be rolled to avoid creasing and then covered with a freshly-washed muslin cloth. Silk and knitted fabrics should always be stored flat. Otherwise, pad them well with acid-free tissue or padding, and cover with clean muslin. Rayon is best stored flat. If it must be hung, use acid-free padding and cover with clean muslin. Leather and suede are best preserved in cool, well-ventilated closets or wardrobes. Cover with clean muslin cloth. Lay supple leather garments flat and pad well with acid-free archival tissue paper.

not allow them to touch the fabric and always wash clothes after. Babies have died or suffered brain damage from being wrapped in blankets that had been stored in mothballs. Both chemicals have been banned in the EU since 2008. Read labels carefully and do not mix older mothballs made of naphthalene, with the more modern paradichlorobenzene type, as harmful chemical reactions occur. By planning ahead for CSS Day, you can teach children to value their second skins and make sure there wont be any costly surprises at the next big change of season.

Jane tries a complementary approach for her (and her horses) pain

fter many years of back and shoulder pain and visits to different therapists, I decided to try another approach. I had heard many good things about Dr. Amber Erickson, an area doctor of chiropractic, so I made an appointment. That day, I had a beautiful, relaxing drive to Erickson Family Chiropractic, which is in the Richfield/Hubertus area. After being warmly greeted upon entering the office, I was shown to a private consultation room. Dr. Erickson arrived promptly, and after introductions, asked me about my health issues. I explained that I had been suffering from upper back and shoulder pain from an accident that left me with a grade 3 separated shoulder. I also shared that I had knee issues from a repaired ACL and two surgeries. After our discussion, Dr. Erickson performed a complete physical and neurological exam, including a detailed spinal and joint check. She then performed numerous chiropractic adjustments on my neck and back, as well as my shoulders and knees. I was impressed with how gentle she was. Dr. Erickson was able to send me out the door feeling better than I had in months! Overall, I really appreciated her natural approach to medicine and nutrition, so I scheduled another appointment for the following week. Unfortunately, that weekend, I took a tumble off my new horse. When I hobbled into her office for my next appointment, I was in even more pain than when I had first seen her. When she asked what had happened, I hesitated to tell her since Id run into enough doctors that didnt appreciate the hobby of horseback riding. After I explained my incident, she informed me that she also owns horses and rides frequently, so she completely understood. This is when we started to talk about how there are a lot of factors as to why a horse would act the way my horse did, most
Natures Pathways | November 2013

of them coming down to the horse being in pain. She told me that she did equine chiropractic and bodywork, and that it could help with my horses unexplainable behavior. My horse had been constantly swishing his tail and pinning his ears at me whenever I had asked for transitions, and sometimes refused the transition altogether, especially the trot to canter. This particular time, when I asked for the trot to canter transition, he bucked me off! Dr. Erickson was able to adjust me and gave me some stretching routines for at home. I then made an appointment for her to come out and see my horse. When she examined him, she was able to reproduce his nasty behavior (head tossing, tail swishing and ear pinning) right away by touching him in certain places. After she worked on him for a short time, I could already see him start to relax. By the end of the session, he was almost asleep! (This from a horse that cant stand still even after having done 50 miles of riding!) When she finished with my horse, she told me to give him a few days off, as he may be sore after treatment. Three days later, I took him out, not expecting much of a change. But I could tell right away even just tacking him up that he had a different attitude. While riding him, I could really tell a difference; he was more focused on me and what I was asking of him. None of his previous bad behaviors were exhibited. I think he was still anticipating pain at this point, but I could tell he was almost surprised that it didnt hurt. I continue to have Dr. Erickson work on both my horse and me. We have become a much better team thanks to her! Erickson Family Chiropractic is located at 2998 Beechwood Industrial Court in Hubertus (village of Richfield). Explaining the gluten-free diet

ietary fads come and go, but the glutenfree movement is one nutritional trend that seems to have staying power. The gluten-free diet was once largely exclusive to sufferers of Celiac disease, a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine, preventing it from absorbing parts of food the body needs to stay healthy. That damage is the byproduct of the bodys reaction to gluten, a term used to describe proteins found in specific grains. But while the gluten-free diet remains a necessity for those who cannot tolerate gluten, nowadays even non-sufferers are embracing the gluten-free diet for a variety of reasons. One such reason is non-Celiac gluten sensitivity, or NCGS. Though NCGS is not as severe as Celiac disease, research has suggested that a gluten-free diet can relieve NCGS symptoms, which include abdominal pain and headaches. Allergies are another reason some people may opt for a glutenfree diet. Unlike Celiac disease or NCGS, both of which are digestive system responses to gluten, wheat allergy is an immunesystem response and, like other allergies, can be outgrown. But until a wheat allergy is outgrown, its best to avoid foods, including

those with gluten, that might trigger an allergic reaction. While a gluten-free diet is a necessity for people with Celiac disease, NCGS or wheat allergies, according to Michell Nacouzi, MD, a primary care physician at Duke Primary Care Brier Creek, it may provide little health benefit to those without such conditions. But that doesnt mean the popularity of the gluten-free diet is about to wane. Those without a preexisting medical condition who are considering a gluten-free diet anyway should know a few things about this diet before making such a drastic change. Gluten-free is not easy. Unlike eliminating sugary soft drinks or cutting back on fried foods, going cold turkey on gluten can be very difficult. Many people who adopt a gluten-free diet find it extremely challenging, as gluten proteins can be found in additives, making something as seemingly simple as reading labels a lot trickier than it looks. Though labels may not list gluten among a products ingredients, men and women must be aware of all additives that contain gluten proteins in order to avoid gluten entirely. Sleepless through the ages

By Karen Block

leep apnea is a hot health topic these days, yet its been a debilitating and often fatal disorder for quite some time. Its widely known that Reggie Whites death was attributed to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but long before that, President Howard Taft was also afflicted with the condition. Indeed, OSA has affected people of all ages, genders and sizes through the ages. OSA is dangerous because it essentially causes a person to stop breathing during sleep, often for up to a minute. And its not uncommon for these pauses in breathing to occur hundreds of times a night. Left untreated, OSA can not only decrease a persons quality of life (due to excessive daytime sleepiness), but also result in serious health concerns including:
Type 2 diabetes High blood pressure Increased risk of heart attack and stroke Sexual dysfunction Fatigue-related motor vehicle accidents Work-related accidents

Many sufferers are unaware that they have OSA. Often, the partners or roommates of these individuals identify excessive snoring often characterized by moments of silence followed by a gasping for air as an issue. Common symptoms of OSA include: excessive daytime fatigue, insomnia, loud snoring, dry mouth, morning headaches, uncontrolled high blood pressure, increasing blood sugars, and decreased libido or erectile dysfunction. If you have noticed any of these, seek diagnosis and treatment. While its commonly thought that OSA predominantly afflicts middle-aged, overweight men (typically with a neck size > 17
50

inches), its becoming apparent that women and even children as young as ten years old can suffer from the condition. So, no matter your age, gender or size, if there is a concern, you should seek diagnosis. Its easy to diagnose OSA with a sleep study conducted at a certified sleep testing facility. Sleep experts advise that people start with a free ApneaLink home sleep screening if they are not certain of the need for a full sleep study. The ApneaLink is a simple, portable device that can be taken home for a night and brought back to the sleep center the next morning. This screening detects abnormal breathing patterns during sleep to help determine if a full sleep study is needed. It is recommended that people choose to have their studies conducted in well facilities that specialize in sleep medicine, and that they take time to shop around to make sure their insurance plans are compatible. People are also advised to be careful with facilities that want to charge them upfront. With more and more patients taking control of their health costs today, providers are becoming accustomed to phone inquiries about the total cost of services, so no one should be tentative about asking. What many individuals find is that a very wide range of charges exists for similar services. If you or someone you know shows signs of OSA, take action today. Early diagnosis and treatment can save a life!
Karen Block is the owner/administrator of Endeavor Therapy & Sleep Center, 11649 North Port Washington Road in Mequon, a sleep diagnostic facility that is offering free ApneaLink sleep screenings as a community awareness project to help educate people about their sleep. Endeavor is open seven nights a week for their patients convenience and is one-quarter of the cost of the hospital sleep labs. Many doctors also recommend men and women on a gluten-

more gluten-free products, shopping for groceries while on a gluten-free diet can be tedious. Certain foods and drinks must be avoided. Though people considering a gluten-free diet are aware that such a diet requires some sacrifices, they may not know which foods and beverages they will need to avoid until they have instituted the diet. For example, a gluten-free diet excludes any beverages that contain barley, meaning beer cannot be part of a gluten-free diet. Though many gluten-free beers are now on the market, beer aficionados may find such alternatives cannot compare to the real thing. Rye and wheat products also must be avoided, and these include products whose labels list bulgur, durum flour, farina, graham flour, kamut, semolina and spelt, among their ingredients. Though there are now many gluten-free foods on the market, unless labels say gluten-free, the following are a handful of products that should be avoided: Breads Cakes and pies Cereals Croutons French fries Pastas Salad dressings Soy sauce Soups

free diet avoid oats, as they can easily be contaminated with wheat during the growing and processing stages of production. Be mindful of the dangers of cross-contamination. Crosscontamination can occur during the manufacturing process when gluten-free foods come into contact with foods that contain gluten. Manufacturers typically include the phrase may contain on labels as a warning to consumers looking to avoid gluten and other ingredients. When labels include this phrase, theres a strong chance that cross-contamination has occurred, and such products should be avoided by men and women on gluten-free diets. Cross-contamination also can occur when gluten-free foods are prepared on the same surfaces as foods containing gluten. For example, toasting gluten-free bread in the same toaster as regular bread can easily lead to contamination. Preventing crosscontamination can be a difficult task, and that difficulty merits consideration by people who want to adopt a gluten-free diet. A gluten-free diet may lead to a vitamin and nutrient deficiency. Grains are often rich in vitamins, and avoiding grains as part of a gluten-free diet can deprive men and women of these vitamins, weakening their bodies as a result. When adopting a gluten-free diet, speak with a dietitian to ensure your diet has enough iron, calcium, fiber, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and folate. If the diet is lacking, you will need to make adjustments.

Designing interior spaces for the soul

By Leona Knobloch-Nelson

hanksgiving, the autumn traditional American holiday, is a time to celebrate with food and family. Shortly following, come the various winter religious and ethnic celebrations. The hope for this time of year (and the holidays) is that we are presented with comfortable chaos. This eventful time provides opportunities for uplifting spiritual and soulful activities. At the same time, unfortunately, it tends to be the most depressing time of the year. To know how to capture the healthier aspects of the season, we must be in tune with our environment. Now is the time to take inventory of our surroundings to assure that we are providing a healthy, healing environment in which to live and work.

they do in nature. Textiles like leather, wool and linen are excellent healing materials (especially if they are produced without pesticides). Additionally, these items will result in a limited amount of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which are often found in synthetics, escaping into your space. Introducing these items does not mean a complete remodel is required. Subtle changes to your space can be made with accessory items, such as pillows, blankets and other decorative elements.

Spaces of nourishment

Spaces for socializing

Social gathering spaces are key areas for healing. These areas provide an avenue for relaxation, as well as community activities. Assure that these areas in the home and workplace provide a variety of comfortable seating options. Additionally, these areas should provide a familiar comfort through common seasonal objects and materials. Autumn months within the Midwest offer a variety of natures beautiful changing colors and textures. Now is the time to capture these comforts within your living environment. Go for a nature walk to gain a sense of peace with your surroundings. During this time, gather natural items (dry leaves, flowers, pine cones, etc.) that can be used for table settings and displays. For a more intense look at revamping your environment, investigate your current finishes. Provide familiar textures and colors within your space that reflect those of nature. These familiar elements will provide opportunities for spiritual renewal, just as
52

Nourishment, both spiritually and physically, can be found in food preparation and eating areas, which are also significant social gathering spaces. In homes and offices, the kitchen/break room generally serves as the hearth. Throughout history, the hearth provided the life source to the population, in that both warmth and food preparation were key elements to survival. Today, many social rituals include the emotional soul fulfillment of food. These spaces harmoniously bring the natural elements of earth, water, air and fire together. Provide opportunities that enhance this musical combination. Capture earth through the texture of dry goods in glass jars. Accent spaces with the color of seasonal fruits and vegetables in bowls or basket displays. Water should not be looked at as a necessity, but as a life source. Enhance this by emphasizing its healing power through symbolic displays of natural water features near the source. These items could be as literal as seashells and river rocks, or more subtle through items with softer colors and textures. The element of air can be enjoyed through the various aromas that occur in food areas. Scientific studies have shown that
www.naturespathways.com

certain aromas are known to trigger personal responses linked to memory. Even without this information, it is known that aromas have therapeutic properties that are essential to soul fulfillment. The element of fire represents the true hearth, the source of nourishment. Colors from the red, orange and yellow families will enhance the warmth of the source. Symbolic forms in nature, such as the sun or, more subtly, sunflowers, can add beauty to this area. Add the soft glow of candlelight, through simple tea lights, throughout your environment, but primarily in the eating areas. This will not only add the familiar warm color and texture, but also spiritually remind us of the importance of this element in our lives. During this time of year, the earth offers us peace and reflection through the natural cycle of change. Embrace that process in your own life by creating a healthy, healing interior environment for your own soul fulfillment.

Seven mistakes people make in finding their passion and purpose

By Jill E. Greinke, MSW, LCSW, SAC

Good, good, good, good vibrations

The Beach Boys

had a client recently lament about how his work situation was so different from his girlfriends. He works at a job he cant stand because he thinks he must do so in order to pay his bills and live the lifestyle he has become accustomed to. His girlfriend, on the other hand, left a job she hated in order to find her passion. She did this even though she had to make sacrifices in her lifestyle and work part time after school in order to support herself. It was worth it to her, however, because she now gets to do what she loves doing. According to cutting edge physicists, what we think becomes our reality. How does this relate to the work situation of my client and his girlfriend? If we think we have to work or do something that we dont want to do, we will ultimately attract MORE of what we dont want. Our thoughts are energetic vibrations that are sent out into the universe. Once they are sent out, they start to manifest in our physical world, sending off a chain reaction of cause and effect. Since energy attracts like energy, negative energy attracts more of the same negative energy. Thoughts arent the only energy vibrations that do this. Feelings and emotions do the same thing. So, if we are really feeling negatively about something, more negative feelings will ultimately come back to us. Likewise, positive emotions send out higher frequency vibrations that magnetize and bring more positivity. Another term for this is called snowballing. When things snowball out of proportion, the energy in a given situation keeps growing and expanding. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. Steve Jobs My business coach, Shelley Riutta, is a holistic psychotherapist and the founder of the Global Association of Holistic Psychotherapy and Coaching. She maintains, In order for people to truly be happy, they need to be in full alignment with their life purpose. Most of us who understand the dynamics of universal energy agree. When thinking

about ones life purpose, several questions need to come into mind: Who am I? Why am I here? What are my gifts and passions? What do I do with them? Can I make a living utilizing them? These are essential life questions that many of us often ask, especially during crises. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, most of us end up sabotaging ourselves by never answering these questions. The few people that do answer them rarely let the revelation of those answers help motivate them to improve their lives. The seven mistakes that block one from reaching his or her life passion and purpose are: 1. Hanging on to past issues that block you. 2. Being separated from your authentic self. 3. Perpetuating what others think and expect of you, and maintaining rigid thinking. 4. Not knowing or being disconnected from your passion. 5. Not knowing your unique gifts. 6. Cutting yourself off from self-exploration. 7. Living with limited thinking and diminished dreams. To be in the kingdom is to merely focus your full attention on it. You have to be willing to perceive nothing else. A Course in Miracles Helen Schucman So is it really possible to find your life purpose and live it out? Yes! But it takes aligning your intention and accompanying feelings with believing it will happen. What you put out really does comes back to you. In order to change your focus to life passion, possibility and purpose, you need to take steps to discover what they are. Then, with perseverance, you have the power to maintain them continually creating and living your life the way you want it. Your life becomes a kingdom that manifests outward, enabling you to live in joy and authenticity.

Restore a life and sometimes a soul

Time away to do nothing (and enemas?)
By Kristina Amelong

ately, Ive felt stressed out, overwhelmed and easily triggered into a deep sense of dread by tasks that I usually handle easily answering the work phone, making lunch for my daughter, doing the dishes after a full day all simple tasks. I would try to remind myself to breathe more deeply or of how much I love this work of life: helping people, parenting and keeping a house; but I couldnt shake the overwhelm. Now, after five days at Lake Superior, I can reflect that I needed time away to do nothing. I hadnt had more than a few sustained hours away from work for over a year. Yes, I love my work and life, so I dont often get the feeling that I need a vacation, but my mind and soul were craving other things. When time away by Lake Superior emerged as a possibility, I found it surprisingly easy to cover my responsibilities. My partner and I quickly packed up our Kombuchas, sardines, wintergreen essential oil, pocket knife and iPhones, jumped into my black Prius and left Madison. Six hours later, we arrived on the shores of the immense lake, near the Devils Island sandstone sea caves in Cornucopia, Wisconsin with nothing to do. What did I find? Simple beauty: my toes meeting the lake as the surf came in and left, came in and left; an aquamarine bug Id never seen before crawling on my hand; nothingness; light meeting sand; a daddy longlegs scurrying across a stone sculpture. I also found memory and transformation. I remembered when, as a child, I would pull those towering, thread-like legs off the beautiful brown body and I felt horrified, horrified that I could add to the suffering of the world. I shivered and moved on, pleased at the changes in myself. Later that day, I found an amber moon setting on the eastern horizon of the lake, becoming a glowing tooth and then dropping

down to a pinpoint of light. Moon on Lake Superior ... I had never seen the moon set in this way. Later, unbeknownst to us, the Perseid meteor shower appeared. (How did that happen?) Then, we had the pleasure of viewing the Northern Lights. All of this natural beauty in one night, as we sat on a deserted beach next to our campfire.

I like this thing called life! Sometimes I find it challenging to really share the depth of healing that Id like for everyone. Yes, enemas work. Each day when I answer the phone or read the emails at work, I get to enjoy stories about how lives have been profoundly improved. Here is one such story: About 6 months ago, thanks to a few blogs and your informational website, my life changed. Literally. I lost half of my colon and rectum from cancer. Life was miserable. With no rectum, I lived on Imodium and was not eating because I went to the bathroom for hours at a time. Anyway, I learned about your enemas and now have a life away from the restroom. If there is anyone you think I can help that is going through a rough time and is on the fence about everyday enemas, let me know. Now Im able to get back in life. I am very grateful for your passion and willingness to share your knowledge. Cranked up my hobby band again. Thank you soooo much. Bob S. I wrote back: This is awesome, Bob, and any more details would be useful! Im sure your story will make a difference to others. Im so happy you found the enema! Kristina Bob replied: OK, kiddo, here goes Life was miserable after losing half of my colon and my rectum due to stage 3 colon/rectal cancer. With no holding tank (rectum), feces would ease out 24/7. Three to four hours at a time with brief breaks. The area stayed inflamed from overuse. Sleep? Forget about it. Got to where I would not go anywhere. As grateful as I was for my doctors saving my life, I was just miserable. Was told the only option was a permanent colostomy. I tried all kinds of foods, including high-fiber options to slow it down, but nothing worked. Was diagnosed with LARS (lower anterior resection syndrome). Imodium no go. Tried everything over the counter. No go. I didnt have loose bowels or constipation, just no holding tank. Like a Pez candy dispenser, just constant small pellet eliminations. Food in general would trigger bathroom duty. My record was 23 trips to the restroom in an hour and a half one Thanksgiving. My parents just hugged me and left crying. Enough pity pot; lets get into solutions. The first enema I took gave me 23 hours of no bathroom duty. Yup, you read that right. Based on my experience, anyone that would benefit from emptying their large colon would benefit from what I call a proper enema. Was I scared to do an enema after the aftermath of chemo, surgeries, radiation, etc., etc., etc.? Sure, but I was desperate. A proper enema to me is as Kristina (angel with wings) suggests on her website. It gave so much information. I had never read that a daily enema was an option. Well, drum roll: I have done an enema a day for about five months, and guess what? No problems. Why? Beats me; I just did what was suggested. Bought a stainless bucket, quality surgical hose and medium-size nozzle. Used salve, essential oil blend Purification, splash of sea salt, goats milk soap, warm water and my iPad (something to read). Forty-five minutes later, all done. As in 24 hours done. Can you do an enema every day without problems? Absolutely. Just get the proper equipment (goes a lot faster) and the proper additives to mix in the warm water. A little weird at first with the flow of water; however, I dont even think about it anymore. A little crampy
www.naturespathways.com

after all the solution is in, then as it starts coming out its very cleansing. Has my life changed? Wow, wow, wow! Cruise, anyone? Pack the bucket and lets go. What can I eat? Anything. Do I get any sleep? Zzzzzzzzzz. Do I feel 20 again? Sorry, Charlie. Im still 50 when I creak out of bed. Is my life perfect? No. Is it better? Way mucho! Best 45 minutes of the day. Why am I writing this? I suffered almost two years before running across this website. I was desperate. Now? I have a life! Dont believe me? Check out www.gettheboomers.com. Thats me, the shy one with shades on, playing sax and keys, and singing the way I used to. You can do this. You can do this. You can do this! Bob S. (have enema, will travel) I teach people how to colon cleanse, how to relieve physical suffering, how to enhance their lives with an enema and how to feel better. And, Id like to continue to grow this colon cleanse website to its full potential as a healing resource; to share within its pages the millions of ways there are to restore a body, a heart and a soul. Yes, the enema, even daily, can restore a life and, thus, sometimes a soul, like time doing nothing but noticing existence on a getaway to Lake Superior. If you find time, please share your own journey.

Therapy & Sleep Center

n 2003, when Endeavor Therapy & Sleep Center (Endeavor) opened in Mequon, there were no other sleep testing facilities in the area. If a person needed an overnight sleep study, they had to drive into Milwaukee at night, and a lot of people werent comfortable doing that, shares Karen Block, owner of Endeavor. Karen, a healthcare provider in the area since 1979, had a strong belief that people should be able to be tested and treated in their own communities, so the need for a facility of this kind was very apparent to her. Her vision was to have the sleep center be as patient friendly, convenient and cost effective as possible. We looked at the normal procedures at other sleep centers and then wanted to improve upon the experience, from start to finish, explains Karen. She envisioned a process where Endeavor would: receive an order from a patients physician; do the insurance verification and pre authorization; call the patient to let them know their benefits and cost; schedule the patient for their testing; and get the results back to their physician in one weeks time. Karen believed that the expedited process would help the patient realize the importance of not only their sleep disorder diagnosis, but also the need to start treatment as soon as possible. Controlling the cost to our patients was a major goal of mine because I didnt want financial issues to be a barrier that prevents a person from getting a diagnosis and treatment for a major health issue like a sleep disorder, Karen explains. Karens initial focus on the needs of the patients and cost containment have definitely paid off. Today, Endeavor is a growing, wellrespected, health care resource, with clients from all over southeastern Wisconsin. We pride ourselves on offering the highest quality study at a much lower cost; in fact, our rates are one-quarter of hospital sleep labs and their affiliates rates, says Karen. In addition to accessibility, education is an ongoing priority at Endeavor. We take every opportunity to inform the public about the importance of sleep for our health, as well as the ramifications of poor-quality sleep. People need to realize that if they are not

getting the sleep they need, they will have long-lasting side effects with their health, Karen shares. By identifying sleep disorders and getting treatment in a timely manner, people can avoid those health consequences. That is the motivation behind Endeavors community awareness project, which makes home sleep screening devices available FREE OF CHARGE. I wish I had this information for my father 25 years ago. He was a loud snorer who had breathing stoppages. Dad was diagnosed with high blood pressure, which his physician had difficulty controlling, and developed Type 2 diabetes in his 50s, leading to mini strokes in later years. He died at 69. At that time, sleep was not looked at; if it was, he might be here still today, laments Karen. If you are concerned about your own or a loved ones sleep issues, call Endeavor today! The state-of-the-art facility is a true independently owned, Medicare-certified, full-service sleep center that has your best interest at heart. If you are diagnosed with a sleep disorder, Endeavor also offers quality CPAP and BiPAP equipment and supplies for your convenience. Remember, good health begins with a good nights sleep!
