A call for grateful living

Many American adults consider Thanksgiving to be their favorite holiday. While Christmas or the Christmas season, really is a festive, nostalgic celebration, lets be honest, its A LOT of work! Thanksgiving, on the other hand, is a day thats good for the soul. If we are fortunate, we may be able to take a break from our hectic lives, gather with family members, share a meal with loved ones and give (not gifts, but) thanks. Many of us may not be aware of just what a powerful emotion gratitude really is. It may be surprising for some to learn that those who practice gratitude as a way of life feel better about themselves, are more optimistic about the future and improve their health! In fact, scientists are finding that these grateful individuals consistently report many health benefits, including: Stronger immune systems. Lower blood pressure. Higher levels of positive emotions. More joy, optimism and happiness. Feeling less lonely and isolated.1 how traditional Chinese medicine can safely address some of our childrens common health concerns. And, theres much more, so please read on! Best wishes for a Thanksgiving Day thats good for your soul. Challenge yourself to keep the gratitude of the day flowing in your life so you, too, can reap the benefits! In health and happiness,

Now thats power! Lets take this as motivation to think and feel gratefully every day, not just on Thanksgiving Day. Image what could happen I am grateful for all of our wonderful advertisers who submit articles to educate their communities about more options for living healthy lifestyles. In this issue, Dr. Steve Puckette encourages us to think thoughtfully about what our food choices really mean to us and to eat wisely for our total health. Barry Kerr educates us about soul-based astrology, and how it can help those of us seeking healing or clarity. Michelle Buchanan explains

A difference of energies
By Don Neviaser

appiness is an ecstatic state of mind, and natural byproduct of positive experiences and attitudes, with the effects on your mind, body and life varying in impact and duration. Positive experiences are enjoyable on their own accord and are further enhanced by the release of endorphins and other feelgood chemicals. Afterwards, you can still enjoy positive memories and take heart in good experiences, but the effects of any positive physiological contributions are relatively short lived.

Negative emotional energy and its effects are very different, however. Whatever the reasons you may carry or live with such burdens, particularly when based on feelings of choice such as resentment, frustration, prejudice or antagonism, negative energy has a way of sinking deep within the carrier and coagulating in the heart. From there, any accompanying negative perceptions, thoughts and attitudes have a way of permeating throughout the mind, body and spirit, seeping outwardly towards those near you and taking a toll in each place that is at least destructive, if not permanent. Even though others may be impacted by such pervasive negativity, it is the carrier who stands to benefit the most from stopping such caustic cycles and their effects. In fact, with the right attitude, many existing negative effects can be positively countered, resulting in less overall impact on your relationships, health, heart and sense of inner peace! But in order to affect the thoughts and feelings that have far too often taken an unknown toll, you must be able to make enough solid, positive changes of heart and mind to counter them as they arise. It would also be to your benefit were you to attempt becoming more aware of existing or habitual negative perceptions and condemnations, and what effects they may have on you. These are the draining mindsets that linger in the back of your heart for a chance to spring to the forefront and they always leave their mark.

As an example, how worthwhile is it to carry around the onus of hatred for someone else? Are you aware that all youre doing is giving them ongoing control over your happiness? Does anyone really deserve to have that much power over you? Or if there is something in your past bothering you and nothing else can be done about it, you owe it to yourself to leave it there and walk forward, more freely, into a new future that is both unwritten and filled with potential. You are the only one who can control your thoughts and perceptions, so why not do yourself a favor and begin making daily mindful efforts to release any wasteful emotional obstructions to your happiness that are weighing upon your heart. Do you really want to carry unnecessary emotional distractions that accomplish little more than diminish your energy, hold you back and make your journey through life all the harder? If you were two people, would you really let another person weigh you down with so much unnecessary baggage that you couldnt even see the light of your own life? Hey, just asking.

Spiritual awakening
By Michaela Torcaso

ore and more people today are recognizing the value of connecting with their authentic selves and awakening spiritually. As a facilitator, I am committed to helping people awaken to the remembrance of all they are. There exists a bit of a misconception about the nature (spiritual vs. religious) and process of this life-changing experience, however. So, Id like to share the following Q&A in hopes that it may help people better understand this process of spiritual awakening. Q. What is the word spiritual, and how is it defined for individuals? A. Each individual has their own unique relationship with God/goddess/spirit/ divine/creator/one/nature/all that is. For me, the word spiritual refers to the relationship we have with and between ourselves and spirit. Therefore, simply stated, spiritual awakening would be remembering/ reclaiming this relationship. As we work on this, sometimes the focus on spiritual awakening can actually get in the way of the simple remembrance of who we are and our relationship with the divine. Exercising the muscle of finding and staying in the Center of Self supports the presence of clarity and ease while awakening. Center of Self: Being in the center of ones biofield/aura; being in conscious alignment with the truth of who one is. Neither forward nor back; neither rushing in with an agenda nor withholding ones
www.naturespathways.com

natural contribution. Related to, but distinct from grounding, like bumper cars solid, heavy, connected to their power source by a rod that stays in a constant position, even when the cars turn. We have that same constant current connecting us to God, while we experience moving with weight on the earth.1 Q. How do I find my true self? A. Start with a question: How do you define true? I refer to (small t) truth differently than (capital T) Truth. (Small t) truth can best be described as that which appears to be true In Time, while (capital T) Truth refers to Out of Time. An example of truth could be: I am female, 55 years old, grandmother, 5'4" and on and on it goes. An incorrect representation of truth might be: I am a procrastinator, afraid, selfish and so on. These have been identified as truth within a locked system of awareness, harboring a multitude of experiences, with a significant amount of data confirming its perceived reality. When we are in the experience of our Truth, we are present to our true self. We have found an actual experience rather than struggling to find a description of who we think we are. In Time/Out of Time: What occurs In Time is reality as we know it, here and now: visible, tangible, governed by the laws of physics a closed system, or so it seems. Out of Time can be experienced In Time, as being in the flow perhaps while dancing, painting, gardening, performing

or competing fully absorbed, with little awareness of time passing. There is a sense of having all that is needed, a sense that all is well. There is peace and an absence of hurry, as if time itself has paused. In these moments, we are tasting divine order, heaven on earth, reality in the here and now.1 I hope these gave you some insight into the concept of spiritual awakening. If you are currently in the process of connecting with your authentic self/awakening (or have interest in getting started), be aware that somewhere on your journey you may have an experience of confusion or not knowing. Please know that this is normal and no cause for concern. A spiritual teacher once shared with me that confusion and not knowing are very high states of awareness, and that it is possible to find tremendous joy amidst these states! I regularly witness the strength it takes to remain true to ones authentic self. I applaud the commitment required to continue strengthening the muscle to choose nothing while remaining open to everything.

Crystal singing bowls for meditation and manifestation

By Luna Lynn and Andrew Frey

n todays technological world of over-stimulation and constant sensory bombardment, so many people struggle to achieve the quieted mind state necessary for deep meditative journeying. For people to just close their eyes and go into an alternate state of consciousness takes an immense amount of time, training and effort. Crystal singing bowls offer a shortcut to this mental territory because they balance the hemispheres of the brain and can put

you in a hypnotic state when you play them or they are played near you. In a way, they work similarly to yoga and tai chi from the perspective that the bowls keep your body distracted enough for your mind to achieve an alternate level of consciousness. Crystal bowls are made from highly purified quartz powder (99.9 percent silicon quartz) that has been fused together in a centrifuge at high temperatures, so they retain the qualities of quartz itself. Quartz produces pure tone and also contains the full spectrum of light as it relates to the seven chakras in the human body. When played, crystal singing bowls emit a measurable wave pattern similar to alpha waves of the brain, and heal the listener by bringing this pure full spectrum light, in the form of sound, back into the human aura. Crystal singing bowls come in a variety of sizes, formats and notes. They can range from 5" to 22" in diameter, can be frosted or clear, and may have either round or flat bottoms. Some have a handle on the bottom for more mobile playing. They can be one of the typical seven scale notes or be from the diatonic scale. Frosted bowls are the most economical and most common, but some newer processes infuse precious gemstones, rare crystals, minerals or precious metals into the bowls when they are formed. Some bowls are even printed on or glazed with 24K gold for the ultimate regal touch (and sound). Singing bowls are an active archetypal symbol of creation. The bowl itself represents the feminine womb of the great mother. The wand is the masculine activating or releasing force of the father. Together, they birth sacred sound, which, in turn, is excellent for manifesting and healing because of the balance and focus of energy it contains. Holographic sound healing practitioners often utilize the crystal singing bowls as master manifestation tools. In the hypnotic hug of sonic resonance, change can be more easily projected into the subconscious to affect personal transformation, once the intention is chosen. Not to be taken lightly, the gravity of setting ones intention is pivotal because SOMETHING will be magnified, so you will want to make sure it is the most beneficial thing for the situation you are dealing with.

The complexity of the lowly rib

By Jed Downs, MD, MPH

ibs dont get the respect they deserve. Since they can cause chest pain and contribute to upper back pain, people sometimes forget the importance of their normal functions: clearing upper back pain and preserving health. The ribs appear to be simple bones, but their anatomic relationships are myriad. Most ribs share joint connections with two vertebrae. The ribs then continue around to the front of the body, where they change from bone to cartilage. This cartilage connects to the rib and, directly or indirectly, to the breastbone, creating two more joints, which can be stuck, sprained or partially dislocated. Between the ribs, there are three muscles. The ribs connect to the low back and sacrum, serve as anchors for the neck and shoulder girdles, and connect to the endothoracic fascia (to which the lining of the chest cavity connects). And so, the mechanical complexity of the ribs becomes self-evident. In front of the ribs, on the inside of the back of the chest, the sympathetic chains that serve to carry much of the autonomic nervous system input for the body are tethered. When the ribs are stuck, jammed, twisted or otherwise distorted, mechanical tension is transferred to these chains, which may in turn negatively influence blood flow to the heart, lungs and gut, heart rate, stomach acid production, or other gastro intestinal or bronchial symptoms, depending upon the level of the lesion. Rib problems can affect the muscles that attach to them, either causing tension or weakness and incoordination. This includes neck muscles, muscles that anchor the shoulder girdle (e.g., pectoralis muscles, rhomboid muscles, upper and lower trapezius muscles) and others less commonly spoken of in gym circles. When the balance of these muscles is thrown off, problems with shoulder blade control arise, which in turn can stress the A-C and ball and socket joints of the shoulder, leading to impingement syndrome or longer-term pinching and erosion of the rotator cuff.

Compliance or flexibility of the chest wall is related to the work of breathing. Those who have underlying lung disease need a chest

hen is the last time you went to the doctor for a health checkup? It can be a hassle to call for an appointment, take time off work, drive to the doctors office and wait in the exam room with only old magazines to read. dog doesnt jump all over the car, or shed or vomit on the seats. Just doesnt sound like a fun! So why should you bring your pet in for an annual exam, especially if your pet is acting just fine? Doesnt the veterinarian just give a quick vaccination and thats the end of it? Why do indoor cats need to go every year? As you know, cats and dogs age more quickly than humans. After the kitten or puppy series of vaccines, another year will go by before the next vaccinations are due. For a 10-year-old human child getting the last MMR vaccine, that is the equivalent of waiting until they are about 20 for their next exam. A lot can happen in that span of time! There are many problems and diseases that can occur in young adults, including dental disease, diabetes, obesity, hip dysplasia and heart disease. So what do veterinarians really check when you take your pet in for a wellness exam? The first thing is getting a weight. This is compared to the pets last weight and leads to a discussion of diet and exercise. The pets fur may be combed to look for fleas, hair loss, scabs or dandruff, and the body felt for any lumps or growths. This leads into discussion about scratching, allergies and flea/tick preventative. The veterinarian often starts at the front of the pet and works down the body, evaluating each body part. Is there symmetry of the face? Any discharge from the nose or eyes? Are any lymph nodes enlarged? What do the teeth and gums look like? Are there cataracts in the eyes? Is the ear drum normal? A stethoscope is used to listen to the heart, as animals can have heart murmurs and irregular rhythms just like humans. The lungs are evaluated for normal airflow and noises. The neck and spine are palpated for any discomfort, the legs and joints put through a range of motion, and the paws checked for broken nails or saliva-staining

(a reddish brown coloring of the fur). The abdomen is felt for any pain or enlarged organs, the anus is examined for any growths and the prostate is checked in intact male dogs. After the exam, vaccinations are given, based on your pets risk factors. Core vaccines are ones all cats and dogs should get: rabies, upper respiratory (cats), parvo and distemper (dogs). Non-core vaccines include feline leukemia, Lyme and bordetella. Blood may be drawn to test for heartworms, tick-borne diseases (like Lyme), feline leukemia and feline AIDS. A stool sample is checked for parasites. Because dogs and cats age more quickly, baseline blood work is highly recommended. Regular blood work and urine checks can help us find problems when they are easily treated, before your pet is acting sick. Your veterinarian also spends time asking about bathroom habits, behavior problems you might be seeing and diseases to be aware of as your pet ages. It is very helpful to bring a list of your concerns to the visit, so you can be sure to get all your questions answered! So while it can be a hassle to get your pet to the veterinarian, it is very important in keeping your furry friend healthy for years to come. And who knows, maybe it will be more enjoyable than you think!

There are many ways to experience the benefits of crystal singing bowl therapy on any budget: purchase your own bowl, attend a singing bowl performance or meditation, or book your own one-on-one sound therapy session. If youd like to hear singing bowls played, the cosmic sound chamber at Cosmic Delights is a particularly unique place to visit. The old bank vault was revamped for sound therapy sessions and intuitive workings. It condenses and magnifies the vibrations with an urgent intensity not found in other spaces, and transports you to a place between the worlds thereby creating a sacred temple for healing and manifestation. People who receive a session also report feeling like they have been washed and cleaned by the sonic vibrations of the bowls. Everyone can benefit from crystal singing bowls!
Luna Lynn Frey is a certified holographic sound healing practitioner and has been doing work with crystal singing bowls in the Madison area for over 8 years. Almost every person she has worked with has reported a heightened sense of awareness lasting a few minutes to several hours after a crystal singing bowl session. Her husband, Andrew Frey, is a visionary artist and self-initiated ascensionistic metaphysician and long-time student of the left-hand path. Meaningful, practical, space-saving gifts for seniors

By Ann Albert

robably the last thing your Mom or Dad needs this holiday season is a knick knack to display on an already crowded shelf. Crock pots and blenders are no longer practical, and there are only so many pairs of socks, pajamas and CDs a person needs. Many adult children agonize over what they can get for Mom and Dad especially if they live far away. Is there a perfect gift for someone we love and cherish who is thinking more and more about how to simplify life? This holiday season, as you prepare your lists and check them twice, you may find it helpful to consider some service-oriented gifts for the hard to buy for especially older adults in your life. Rather than something to put on a shelf or store away, maybe one of these gifts will delight your loved one: Housecleaning: There arent too many people who wouldnt mind someone else scrubbing their bathrooms or mopping their floors, at least occasionally. Considering your budget and their

needs, buy your parents a New Years/clean house surprise, or purchase monthly or every-other-month cleaning services. Landscaping: Whether its a weekly mow, seasonal leaf removal, or more in-depth planting and gardening services, many seniors living in their own homes would love to forego some of their lawn tasks. Maybe something simple like a gift card for a raised garden or special flower garden would be appreciated. Handyman services: This would likely be welcome for any senior. Handyman services can range from cleaning out the garage and light electrical work, to painting and clearing the eaves. Scheduled handyman visits can help older adults preserve what is often their most valuable asset and stay safe in their homes. A persons balance and strength can change dramatically over the years, which makes climbing ladders and carrying heavy items very dangerous for many. Home organization/decluttering: Just thinking about what needs to happen in order to move from ones home to a smaller place or a retirement community can be overwhelming. Because, like most of us, seniors often have too much stuff that has

accumulated over the years. Hiring a professional organizer to help Mom or Dad sift through years of things they may no longer need, can take the stress out of this ahead of time. Those who offer these services are often skilled at working with people to help them navigate the emotional minefields of clutter. Organized, uncluttered homes tend to be safer and significantly more pleasant to live in. Using a service to help in this endeavor is often liberating and empowering. Personal history: Do you have a loved one who says they want to write down their life story, but never gets around to it? Or possibly, they love the idea but find it overwhelming? Consider hiring a professional to work with them to help get the stories on paper, CD or DVD, and saved for future generations. Their creation can also serve as a wonderful gift for the whole family to enjoy and pass on to future generations. Cab gift cards: If your loved one doesnt drive or prefers not to drive at night, consider a gift card with a local cab company. This opens up many possibilities for seniors to attend functions they might dismiss due to transportation needs.
Memberships/gift cards for social activities: Encourage your

loved one to stay active by giving gift cards for exercise classes in the community or senior center classes, or memberships to organizations like the YMCA, PLATO, Sports for Active Seniors, Supporting Active Independent Lives (SAIL), University League, or other similar organizations. (Also consider pre-paying for Meals on Wheels, another wonderful program for seniors that delivers nutritious meals.) Hopefully, this list will generate some useful ideas and make your holiday season more enjoyable. If money is tight, think about asking your siblings to pitch in and do a group gift. wall that will move freely when breathing in and out. Their lung disease may not be reversible, but they should not be working harder than necessary for each breath. Being able to breathe is necessary for normal function in bringing venous blood and lymphatic fluids back towards the heart. With every inhalation, a negative pressure occurs in the chest and a positive pressure occurs in the abdomen. With exhalation, positive pressure in the chest moves air out of the lungs and the diaphragm relaxes and gives the abdominal organs more room, decreasing the pressure in the belly. When the ribs lack full range, for whatever reason, fluid flow may be compromised in the whole body, but will be compromised locally. Local fluid flow restriction can lead to decreased local immune function as well. In the days prior to antibiotics, osteopaths treated pneumonia by clearing rib and local vertebral problems. During the 1918 influenza pandemic, those treated with osteopathy were much more likely to survive. Patients hospitalized for pneumonia who were treated osteopathically were discharged on average over a day earlier than those receiving usual care.1 Problems with rib joint mechanics and function lead to issues of pain. Costochondritis, the most common medical

diagnosis of non-cardiac chest pain, rarely has inflammation at the tissue level. The tissues are crying out in duress because the nerve endings are being twisted, sheared or crushed, not because of inflammation from an autoimmune or other disease processes. Chest wall pain of this nature may come from direct trauma, coughing or sneezing, falling asleep over the arm of a couch, a problem with a vertebra or tension from connective tissue within, such as scarring post pneumonia. When cardiac chest pain has been ruled out and pain persists, keep in mind the complexity of the lowly rib, and consider looking for an osteopath or other manual practitioner who understands its importance and knows how to restore its function!

couldnt be further from the truth! Grassfed meat is healthier and safer for you, not to mention that its also healthier for the animals and the environment when done properly. Remember, You are what you eat! Despite the clich, its truly more accurate than many think. Farmers who embrace the grassfed method follow natures way over the entire lifetime of their cattle. It starts during and after birthing, in the pasture in late spring, as the cows are free to graze about. The baby is allowed to nurse the mother for up to 10 months, allowing full development of their rumens (stomachs). A short time after birth, the baby calf will begin to eat grass. As the American Grassfed Association shares, Ruminants have evolved to eat grass and not much else. Feeding them a diet rich in grains creates an acidic environment in the digestive system, leading to disease and the need for treatment with antibiotics.1 Grain-fed beef animals are more prone to health problems than grassfed cattle. The grain-fed method remains popular, however, because the animals mature faster. Grain-fed beef cattle are market ready in 14 to 18 months, whereas grassfed beef cattle require 2 years before harvesting. Feed for some non-grassfed cattle can include things other than grains, however. In factory farms, animals are switched to an unnatural diet based on corn and soy. But, many large-scale dairy farmers and feedlot operators save money by feeding the cows by-product feedstuffs as well, according to eatwild.com. Which means cattle is being fed things like: bakery and potato waste, municipal garbage, pasta and candy.2 So, factory farming provides a cheap and convenient food supply year-round. Another way farmers committed to the grassfed method follow natures way is by raising the cattle with no confinement. On the other hand, most grain-fed cattle finish their lives in CAFOs, or

confined animal feed operations. Facilities like these and factory farms are generating increasing concern that mechanized systems are causing a host of problems.2 Some of these include: unnecessary use of hormones, antibiotics and other drugs; air, land and water pollution; and animal stress and abuse (as well as the food with less nutritional value mentioned above). To maintain health in an unhealthy environment, cows are then given antibiotics. According to Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, The extreme overuse of antibiotics in farming 80 percent of the antibiotics sold in the United State is used in farm animal production has led to an explosion of antibiotic resistant bacteria and infections. More people now die from MRSA each year than die of HIV/ AIDS, and these infections are getting more common and harder to treat. Decades of research has shown that daily dosing of antibiotic to healthy livestock is largely to blame for the rises in antibiotic resistant bacteria. These bacteria are found on most meat available in our grocery stores, according to recent FDA data.3 Additionally, growth hormones are permitted for use in cattle in the United States on grounds that no risk to human health has been proven even though measurable residues turn up in meat we eat. These contribute to the build up of the estrogenic compounds in the environment.4

American Grassfed Association certification means:

forage from birth to harvest no grain, animal by-products, antibiotics or hormones, ever. The animals are never confined in a feedlot, but are instead allowed to roam free on pasture, living a happy, stress-free life and expressing their natural behaviors. The animals are born and raised in the United States on family farms, and every animal is tracked from birth to harvest. The farms and ranches are audited annually to make sure that when consumers see the AGA logo, they know that the meat is produced according to the highest standards.1 The USDA Organic Grassfed label adds an even more stringent list of prohibited substances for animal and land use. Consumer Reports offered this advice about grassfed meat, Look for the USDA Organic seal or you can look for the American Grassfed Association logo, which certifies that the animal was fed only grass and didnt get any antibiotics.5

Kids and constipation

By Wade E. Anunson, DC

ccording to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), 5-30 percent of the child population will experience constipation, and symptoms become chronic in more than one-third of patients. It is actually a common reason for children being referred to secondary care. To get a better idea of what constipation is all about, consider this statement from the NICE 2010 clinical guideline: The exact cause of constipation is not fully understood, but factors that may contribute include pain, fever, dehydration, dietary and fluid intake, psychological issues, toilet training, medicines and familial history of constipation. The signs and symptoms include infrequent bowel activity, foul smelling wind and stools, excessive flatulence, irregular stool texture, passing occasional enormous stools or frequent small pellets, withholding or straining to stop passage of stools, soiling or overflow, abdominal pain, distention or discomfort, poor appetite, lack of energy, an unhappy, angry or irritable mood, and general malaise.1

The medical solution for constipation is to prescribe laxatives that pull water from the body back into the colon, loosening the stool and forcing evacuation. This treatment is controversial even among pediatricians as it leads to long-term use and falls short of addressing the cause of the problem. Its clear that there is little understanding in the medical community as to the actual cause, other than family history, related potty training obstacles and to a lesser extent, diet. Asking one more question may just put you closer to the cause of the digestive or metabolic precursors of constipation. Such as, Why is my child constipated in the first place? Or, Why would my infant, only weeks to months old, have bowel problems already?Aside from the transition from breast milk or formula to solid foods when constipation is more of a short term occurrence, healthy bowel activity of pooping daily should be the norm in children and adults. In my clinical experience, infants and children now present with chronic constipation and the use of laxatives daily, with no expectation of ever being off the medication. As a short-term solution, the laxative gets the job done but not without a cost. Over the past several months, Ive covered the topic of the nerve system and its essential role in coordinating literally every bodily function. In the June 2013 issue, I discussed the connection with antacids creating inflammation throughout the body due to the masking of one symptom that ends up creating deeper issues elsewhere in the body. That same connection with improper

digestion is all too often evident in many childhood constipation and diarrhea problems. So, what if you knew that autonomic nerves in your spine innervate and coordinate digestion, and smooth muscle found throughout the small and large intestines? And what if you knew that constipation meant your system was out of balance from diet, stress or injury, potentially irritating the autonomic nerve system? What if you could do something about it that didnt require putting drugs into your childs body?In my clinical experience, I have found a direct correlation with spinal misalignments and digestive health.

purposes.Within hours after an adjustment, the flood gates would open so to speak.I would get reports that both kids would have significant diaper filling sessions. The parents are still amazed that an adjustment has that type of an effect on the body.Of course, it makes sense its all connected.

The missing link

In my pediatric practice, it is more common to find digestive and bowel habits an indicator that the body is out of balance before a complaint of musculoskeletal pain.My approach is pragmatic in that I look first at the basics such as diet and environmental challenges the infant or child is exposed to. Both of these can adversely impact the autonomic nerve system as well as trigger a hypersensitive immune response leading to food sensitivities ultimately affecting bowel habits. My 1- and 3-year-old nephews recently confirmed the role the nerve system plays in bowel habits. Their mom and dad focused on natural childbirths, breastfeeding at least 12 months, a diet of organic foods whenever possible, and avoiding sugar and refined foods. Following a daily Vitamix blended vegetable/fruit juice, with all the enzymes and raw nutrients, the oldest would still only have about two or three bowel movements per week.I would adjust the youngest for torticollis and the older for preventive

subluxation.

Chiropractic is NOT a cure for constipation, but rather an effective solution to restore balance to the nerve system, allowing the body to function properly.

Beautiful teeth at any age

By Amy Sergeant, DDS

Before and after.

re you happy with your smile? Do you wish your teeth were whiter, straighter or more uniform? There are many dental options to help you obtain the perfect smile at any stage in your life. Porcelain veneers and crowns, dental bonding and Invisalign are all routinely used to fix teeth that are discolored, worn

down, chipped or broken, misaligned, uneven or irregularly shaped. They can close spaces between teeth, make teeth look longer, change the shape of the teeth and protect them from decay.

Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic

dentistry procedure used to repair or reshape teeth. A porcelain veneer is a thin layer of porcelain permanently bonded to the surface of a tooth to change its size, shape and color. The porcelain veneers provide results that are immediate and dramatic! Veneers offer many advantages. The

color of a porcelain veneer can be selected such that it makes dark teeth appear whiter. They provide a natural tooth appearance that is stain resistant. Gum tissue tolerates porcelain well, and veneers provide a strong, aesthetic alternative to crowns, typically lasting ten to fifteen years.

Crowns

A porcelain crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth, covering it to restore its shape, size and strength, and improve its appearance. The crowns, when cemented into place, fully cover the visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line. Porcelain crowns also offer many advantages. They are natural looking, stain resistant and durable (last five to fifteen years), and restore the ability to speak and chew, protect damaged teeth from further decay and restore confidence in your smile.

are customized tooth coverings that must be manufactured in a lab, bonding usually can be done in one office visit, unless several teeth are involved. Another advantage is that very little tooth enamel is removed. Also, unless dental bonding is being performed to fill a cavity, anesthesia is usually not required. The disadvantages are that dental bonding typically does not last as long as veneers or crowns, and it is less stain and wear resistant.

removable, clear, custom-made mouthpieces. Each Invisalign aligner is worn for about two weeks and then the next aligner is administered. By gradually changing aligners, your teeth will be moved into place as if traditional braces were worn. Because Invisalign mouthpieces are removable, there are no food restrictions or flossing problems, and appointments are only required every six weeks. If you suffer from crowded teeth, spaced teeth, overbite, underbite, crossbite or other bite problems, you may benefit from this treatment. Straight teeth not only improve your facial aesthetics, but also help you to effectively bite, speak and chew. Tired of looking in the mirror and wishing you liked your smile, or starring at your friends perfect teeth and thinking, Why cant my teeth look like that? There are many great options that can accommodate any budget.

Bonding

Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-colored composite resin material (a durable plastic material) is applied and hardened with a special light, which bonds the material to the tooth to restore or improve a persons smile. The largest advantage of dental bonding is the ease and inexpensive nature. Unlike veneers and crowns, which

he herb peppermint, a cross between two types of mint (water mint and spearmint), grows throughout Europe and North America. Peppermint is often used to flavor foods, and the leaves can be used fresh or dried in teas. Today, peppermint oil is used as a folk or traditional remedy for nausea, indigestion, cold symptoms, headaches, muscle and nerve pain, stomach problems and bowel conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. Essential oil of peppermint may be found in very small doses in capsule or liquid forms. The essential oil can also be diluted with another oil and applied to the skin.

What the science says

Although there are some promising results, there is no clearcut evidence to support the use of peppermint oil for other health conditions.

Results from several studies suggest that peppermint oil may improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. A few studies have found that peppermint oil, in combination with caraway oil, may help relieve indigestion, but this evidence is preliminary.

Peppermint oil appears to be safe for most adults when used in small doses. Possible side effects include allergic reactions and heartburn. Capsules containing peppermint oil are often coated to reduce the likelihood of heartburn. If they are taken at the same time as medicines such as antacids, this coating can break down more quickly, thus increasing the risk of heartburn. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Why am I me?
By Barry Kerr

o you ever wonder why your life is what it is? Why do you have your particular appearance and personality? Why did you inherit those exact genes? And what about that childhood family, those parents or lack thereof? Perhaps, for you, there is some level of pain or discomfort that accompanies these questions. Perhaps you remember, like most people do, that as a small child, you felt some sense of wrongness or pain about being in this world. Something wasnt right. It might be an obvious memory of being physically or psychologically abused or neglected. Or it could be a subtle feeling, a latent adult and vague awareness of something amiss and incomplete in those early years of naivety. Whether obvious or subtle, such childhood experiences carry deep and profound messages into our adult years, often resulting in repeated patterns of sadness, anxiety, fear, aggressiveness, withdrawal, depression or an assortment of other life-depleting behaviors. At some point, if your own pattern becomes enough of a hindrance to your sense of enjoyment or well-being, you may find yourself confused and seeking answers to these questions, longing for some perspective and meaning. Ultimately, you may be longing for relief, for healing, for wholeness. You might turn to a healer, a therapist, a psychic or a spiritual teacher. Among the many effective resources addressing this longing, there is one that is emerging as a profoundly direct and efficient channel to decipher the context and meaning of your unique life and your avenues for healing and fulfillment. Whether you suffer from ongoing pain and seek healing, or you just feel a need for clarity and direction in your life, soul-based astrology offers clear and reliable guidance and answers. When combined with modern psychology, healing and spiritual growth coaching, it becomes a powerful tool for personal transformation. You probably know your own astrology birth sign, whether its Leo or Capricorn or some other. Perhaps you occasionally read the simplistic astrology forecasts in your newspaper. If thats all you know of astrology, put aside your preconceptions, for you will be surprised to discover that in your astrological birth chart (based on the date, location and exact time of birth), there are many other factors involved, including all the planets, the moon and other astronomical references. These all have particular meanings that

reflect the complexity of your own, unique inner make-up. Some are contradictory, reflecting the inner parts of you that often seem contradictory. Others represent the ways your inner parts seem to co-exist with ease and contentment. This is a deep and rich blend of science and wisdom, used by thousands of well-respected mental health professionals, including Jung, himself. Unlike psychic readings or serendipitous moments of inner revelation, within this complex language of symbols, a combination of logic and intuition allows you to read for yourself, the information that can answer your deepest questions about your life. You can find revealed, in your birth chart, the reasons your soul chose this particular lifetime, the goals your soul wants to reach, and the particular ways that your personality, parents, siblings, other significant relationships and childhood circumstances, including the pain, are supportive and loving parts of your souls plan. Your chart can also give you and an ally insights into how, with more awareness of that plan, you can increase your prospects for healing, learning and growing faster, so you can increase your sense of fulfillment and maximize your life potential. A soul-based astrology reading, for many, is a life-altering experience. To be able to know, first hand, that your unique personality and life was reflected accurately at birth in the configuration of the planets in our solar system is not only an awesome mystical experience that confirms the absolute positive and loving nature of our universe, but also one that you can return to at any moment throughout the rest of your life. That makes it a very useful tool for ongoing self-awareness and for understanding your relationships to others. No wonder so many healers, coaches and therapists are using astrology as part of their ongoing service to clients. By tapping into the archetypical energies of a persons make-up and current situation so directly, it catalyzes and amplifies the intuitive awareness from the soul that enhances lasting healing and personal transformation.

Solar domestic hot water systems

By Mark Warnick
olar domestic hot water systems are used to offset the energy used by your existing hot water heater, be it natural gas, electricity, LP or something else. The main components of these systems are one or more hot water collectors, a pump(s), a controller, a heat exchanger and a solar storage tank. Solar hot water collectors usually are 4 feet wide by 6, 8 or 10 feet tall, and are usually installed on the roof. Other sizes are also available, which provides options to the installer to accommodate

the demand or the available roof area. The collectors should be rated by the nonprofit Solar Rating & Certification Corporation (SRCC). This organization runs collectors through a rigid testing regime to ensure they meet specific construction standards and provides performance ratings for apples-to-apples comparison among different manufacturers products. The solar storage tank contains the water that will be heated. Many hot water heating companies have gotten into the solar market during the last several years, which has led to many improvements resulting in quicker installation and increased efficiency of the systems. The standard sizes of tanks are 50, 80 and 119 gallons, although other sizes do exist. An installer has the choice of models with a built-in heat exchanger or others that would be paired with an external heat exchanger. Either option will work well if the system is designed properly. The controller is the brain behind the system. It monitors the temperature of the solar storage tank and the temperature at the collectors. If there is heat available from the sun, and the water in the tank has the capacity for more heat, the controller turns on the pump. A nontoxic antifreeze solution circulates through the collectors, picks up the heat and transfers it to the water in the storage tank through the heat exchanger. The controller then turns off the pump when the tank is up to the preset temperature or the there is no solar resource available. What happens if it has been cloudy? In our climate, a backup water heater is used to deliver hot water during these times or at night. Your existing hot water heater plays this role. The flow of domestic hot water in a home with one of these systems is as follows: Fresh water enters the home from the utility or well, and is conditioned if needed. It then flows into the solar storage tank to be preheated. It then flows into the backup hot water heater to be brought up to the desired temperature, if needed, typically 120 F. The temperature of the water in the solar storage tank can be as high as 160 F. A thermostatic tempering valve is installed after the backup hot water heater. If the water temperature is higher than is

Fight infections naturally!

By Jack A. Erb
lmost 30 years ago, the U.S. Surgeon General testified before Congress saying, It is time to close the book on infectious diseases. We declared war on microbes. Flash forward to today and, well, let me say this they are winning. The overuse of antibiotics has weakened our immune systems. Sure, antibiotics may kill bacteria, but many only work on specific bacteria. They also do not work on viral or fungal infections. Despite this fact, antibiotics still tend to be used in many of these cases, with little or no benefit. In addition, bacteria are extremely clever. When exposed to antibiotics that wipe out 90 percent of their population, the remaining 10 percent adapt and form new colonies that can live in the presence of the antibiotic.1 Such antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria are increasingly common today. It is leading to the reappearance of some diseases once believed to have been conquered. Conditions like tuberculosis, gonorrhea, malaria and childhood ear infections are now more difficult to treat than they were a few decades ago. Another example of the cleverness of microbes is the fact that some strains actually produce spores that allow them to survive extreme conditions. Its no wonder health experts call them superbugs! Harvard University Professor and Nobel Laureate Dr. Walter Gilbert has warned, There may be a time down the road when 80 to 90 percent of infections will be resistant to all known antibiotics. Scary, to say the least. What can be done? We can use herbs and other natural remedies to fight infection. Herbs and natural remedies get good grades. Heres why: Natural remedies are very complex and their chemical nature varies slightly from year to year that they are grown. This prevents microbes from developing resistance to them. In addition to killing microbes, natural remedies strengthen the immune system, while antibiotics actually weaken the immune system by disrupting the friendly flora. Herbs and friendly flora get along quite nicely. Many natural remedies are antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. They can be effective in many cases where antibiotics are not, such as: colds, flu, sinus and respiratory infections, sore throats, earaches and bronchitis. What are some of these antibacterial herbs and remedies?
www.naturespathways.com

Hi-potency garlic and Echinacea/goldenseal come immediately to mind. For viral infections, a product like Elderberry D3fense is very good. It contains elderberry fruit extract, Echinacea purpurea, vitamin D3, willow bark extract, olive leaf extract and royal jelly. This has shown to be a great thing for both adults and kids to take during the winter months to ward off colds and flu. Pure colloidal silver is excellent to take in liquid form. A monthly advice column for your energy system

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, What is up with astrology? I am obsessed with my horoscope, but Ive never really understood how and why it works. Some days its very accurate and other days its completely off. Is astrology just generic mumbo jumbo? Star-Curious Dear Star-Curious, Oh, I used to be obsessed with my horoscope too. In my younger years, I would buy the sun-sign horoscope books and read them every day. Those books and what is found in the newspaper or elsewhere are generic. Not mumbo jumbo, but generic. True astrology is much, MUCH more in-depth than just your sun-sign. An astrologer can look at the date, time and place of your birth to calculate exactly where the planets were as you were born. This reading is known as a birth-chart reading. Barry Kerr, a local certified spiritual astrologer, explains that in a birth-chart reading, You will discover why your soul chose this present lifetime to accomplish its next purposes for spiritual growth and evolution. We will examine how the particular traits, strengths, weaknesses and conflicts of your egos personality are configured to help your soul toward that mission. And we will seek to understand how your past (the good, bad and ugly) fits into your souls plan. An astrologer can also examine the sky in regards to your relationships, your business, your children, a particular decision, relocation plans, etc. As for your horoscope obsession have fun! If the days horoscope pertains to you, then enjoy. If not, just remember that it is generic amongst everyone that has a birthday in your sign.
Tina Bensman is the owner of Madisons The Chakra House and mentor to hundreds of spirit-driven women and men around the world, empowering them to be amazing just as they are. Known for blending heart-centered, compassionate, intuitive healing with down-to-earth reality-based transformation, Tina gets results in big ways. Above all, Tina is passionate about empowering women and men to create their lives exactly as they wish to live them on their terms. She and her clients are living examples that you can finally feel like yourself again!

safe, this device adds cold water to the hot to reduce the temperature to one that will not scald the person waiting at the faucet. The amount of hot water used in your home will drive the size of the system. The most cost-effective size of system is one that produces about 100 percent of your needs in July, the month with the best solar resources. The rule of thumb for our area is, one square foot of hot water collector for each gallon hot water required for each day. The rule of thumb demand is 20 gallons of hot water per day per person. A family of four would require 80 square feet of collector area, or two 4 x 10 collectors. Do not fear if you have a large family! The average demand per person lowers as the number of people in the home increases. All this being said, you should review your habits to see if this rule applies to you. Your usage may be lower if you wash all your laundry on cold and/or take only showers with low-flow showerheads. A well-designed system consisting of high-quality components, installed by an experienced contractor, can operate for three plus decades. Examples can be seen throughout Wisconsin in systems that were installed in the early 1980s and are still producing hot water. Imagine the tons of CO2 saved from the atmosphere!

immune system. It is non-toxic (does not accumulate in the kidneys or cause heavy metal contamination) and does not destroy beneficial bacteria in the colon like many pharmaceutical antibiotics. This product is usually also available in a gel form for topical use. I use this on my 12-year-old dog, Toby, when he gets sores and such on his body. This does a great job! Another great topical antiseptic that also speeds tissue healing is pure Australian tea tree oil. It works well on wounds and injuries to prevent infection. Dont get me wrong here. Antibiotics have their place in fighting disease, especially in cases of serious illness or postsurgical infection. But they do tend to be overused for common illnesses. This is where herbal remedies can be used more effectively. Please keep yourself and your loved ones healthy and safe throughout the holidays!

As the days get shorter, our bodies makes virtually zero vitamin D. Taking a good vitamin D supplement, 1,000 - 2,000 IUs daily, is a wonderful way to ward off the winter holiday blues and keep your immune system strong and vital. (Speak to your local health practitioner about specific dosage.) Countless studies have shown how marvelous green tea is for our health. With anti-aging, cancer-fighting and anti-inflammatory properties, and metabolism-boosting effects, green tea is a onestop shop for preventative medicine.1 Loose leaf, tea bag, flavored, gunpowder, jasmine it doesnt matter what kind, its all good and full of healthy plant-derived antioxidants. Drink a cup right now, and then, one later, and then, another one after that!

Is it local?

Eating local fresh winter vegetables, dairy and meat increases the local economy and decreases your carbon footprint. Check the farmers markets and co-ops for garlic, onion, sweet potatoes and kale, which are packed with minerals and vitamins that boost immune function, and are mighty delicious. Also, many farms have meat and dairy CSAs that run through the winter, so check in with your favorite farm to see whats available.

How Patient Should a Patient Be?

Get in for your physical faster at Group Health Cooperative!
Some folks wait for months to see their doctor for a routine physical. In most cases, Group Health Cooperative will get you in for your physical faster so you dont have to be such a patient patient. Faster physicals another way that you and your doctor are Better Together.

Reduce sugar

Eating cane sugar lowers your immune system, increases inflammation and widens your waist. Try some alternatives: Maple syrup is packed with minerals and is a local favorite, while honey is an excellent alternative to cane sugar in baked goods (use half the volume of honey to sugar). As the holidays are approaching, limit your cane sugar intake until the big dinners or parties; itll be worth the weight (pun intended) in gold.

Get outdoors

Now is not the time to hole up in front of the TV! Bundle up and get outside instead! Emerging research by the American Association of Ophthalmology2 and the American Public Health Association3, among others, shows that getting outdoors is good for your health. Spending time in nature reduces stress and increases blood flow. Walking briskly in the woods and breathing in the cold, clean air will warm your insides and keep your immune system strong. Sitting next to your favorite tree, visiting a beautiful stream or going to a program at your local nature center is a sure way to improve your life quality and overall wellness. Honor your contracts

By Rebecca Grazulis, MA, M.Ed.

eve all had the experience of meeting someone and feeling like we already know them. The connection is natural. The feeling is sincere. Its just easy. In the healing arts, so many practitioners know that these connections are so powerful because they arent new. Feel like you already know someone even though youve just met? Well, its because you do already know him or her. In the intuitive arts, it quickly becomes undeniable that we have all had other lives, frequently called our past lives. In addition, so many of the people who are currently fulfilling significant roles in our present lives have also been with us before in our past lives. This is all incredibly interesting to consider, but what is also important to know is that all of these relationships represent soul contracts that we have created. In fact, we have contracts with almost every person who crosses our path. What is a soul contract? Basically, it is an agreement we make with another person to help them. On a soul level, we are constantly creating and amending contracts, and sometimes, we even agree to help someone by not helping them. Contracts can be huge and involve relationships that last your entire lifetime. Others are tiny and can be completed in just minutes. During intuitive readings, many of the contracts that come forward involve primary relationships with parents, significant others or children. Most of the time, there is unfinished business or karma to level. Help needs to be offered and accepted. However, when we dont accept help, or when we dont step up to the plate and offer help, we arent doing our part to honor these contracts, and, as Ive been told in intuitive readings, it is very important for them to be honored and completed. It serves our soul. And it serves the highest good of the other party. For example, if someone is trying to do you a service in this

lifetime, it is very possible that he or she is trying to make amends for something that has happened in another life. You may actually feel resistance towards this person because you subconsciously remember what happened between the two of you in another lifetime. However, allowing this person to help you assists you both. You receive help you need, as well as the opportunity to release any old feelings of anger you are harboring. The other person receives the gift of balancing his karma.

Winterizing your skin

By Angela Kowieski

he winter season can wreak havoc on not only our snowy streets, but also our skin. The cold air and windy breeze can cause our skin to become chapped, dull and dehydrated. To keep your skin healthy during this time of year, you may have to double up on moisturizing and possibly use a product that is heavier in nurturing oils than what you would normally use. Some of the ingredients you should look for in a product include:
Shea nut butter Coconut oil Mango butter Cocoa butter

Coconut Banana Mask

This mask is great for dry, dehydrated, sensitive, wind-burned skin!
Ingredients: 1- to 2-inch piece of banana Coconut milk Directions: Mash the banana piece with a fork until mushy. Add coconut milk by the teaspoon and keep mashing with the fork until a creamy paste is made. Apply to clean skin and leave on for 10 minutes. To remove, wipe off with a wet paper towel and splash with water to remove any other residual leftovers of the mask. Follow with a moisturizer.

Soothing products such as these are best used at night, when your skin has a little more time to absorb it, or before going on an outdoor adventure that exposes your skin to freezing wind. Wintery conditions such as these are known to cause chapping and that dreaded wind burn, which leave skin raw and red. Another helpful natural ingredient to look for is lavender essential oil. Lavender not only has an aromatizing and relaxing scent, but also is extremely reparative. You can put a drop of lavender in a tiny bit of olive oil and put it on areas in need of healing (great for dry and cracked lips). Applying a moisturizing mask once a week will also give your skin the love it needs. Consider trying this made-from-scratch recipe to keep your face moisturized and looking fresh for those holiday events. Enjoy!

Honor your contracts continued from page 31

When I have been on the receiving end of a contract, I have been offered many different kinds of help: a job, a compliment, some friendly advice, a door held open or, sometimes, even a door closed. Some of the best help I have ever received has been in the form of a missed opportunity or someone saying no, as those times have allowed me to find the right opportunity and the best possible door through which to walk. You just never know how your reaction or your words will affect the course of someones life. So, be aware that all of the people in your life represent opportunities, and they also represent contracts. When they are in need of help, step up to the plate. Not only is it simply the right thing to do, but it also helps you and the growth of your soul. Likewise, when you need help, be open to receiving it. Let not pride nor ego get in your way. You will get what you need and learn valuable lessons about your own strength. And, always, when we improve the conditions of our lives, it improves the condition of every life that we touch. Begin to view the relationships in your life as the soul contracts that they are. Be your best self as you play out your own role in a contract. Be kind. Lend a hand. And offer help by accepting help. It is a profound act of healing.

For what we seek is within, and in yoga, this is where we dive headfirst.
 Max Strom

Susan was a quiet, thoughtful, hardworking woman with a lot on her plate: a husband and two active high schoolers at home, a stressful full-time job, an elderly mother in poor health and more. This busy life left this weary and anxious Fitchburg resident with little or no time to herself. She had grown accustomed to this doing and accomplishing frame of mind, moving through her life in autopilot mode, but had a growing awareness of what she had lost: the spiritual connection to her self, her trademark vitality, the ability to stay in the present moment, her inspiration and purpose, and the balance in her life, being the most concerning. Then, early last year, a caring friend, who understood from personal experience what Susan was experiencing, brought her to what would be a life-changing class. This was the moment when she found yoga. Despite her initial trepidation prior to and upon entering the front door of Perennial Yoga and Meditation in Fitchburg (Perennial), it didnt take long for Susan to feel a connection. It was a relaxed and inviting place. She found the serenity that enveloped her intoxicating. Classmates were welcoming and supportive, and the teacher was inspiring. Susan began to practice meditation and yoga regularly, and almost immediately felt better physically. She started sleeping better, choosing better foods to eat and making healthier lifestyle choices. She felt emotions like anger, worry and frustration move through her without the need to instinctively react. She experienced how long-held

By Jackie Peters

resentments can fall away, and she felt forgiveness of self and others take root. Today, after almost two years of yoga and meditation practice, Susans vibrant state of aliveness shines forth. As she enthusiastically shares, The teachers at Perennial, as well as the friends Ive made there, have helped me reach a place of splendid health, strength and peace. Theyve inspired me to regain a connection to my self. I am now more mindful and thoughtful to others and to myself. Im able to stay in the present moment instead of dwelling in the past and future. I have reclaimed my life!

Stories like this warm Meg Groves heart. Its why she opened the studio, after all, as her own story is much like Susans, and she believed there were many more men and women just like her. Megs life had a trajectory similar to others. She earned a masters degree, got married, birthed two beautiful sons and was working in a career that gave her the personal satisfaction of making a difference in the world. But with each passing year, a greater sense of unease set in, her marriage ended, her boys were needing her less and her work stopped nurturing her spirit. I couldnt

even name the source of the unease at first, Meg says, but in my late 20s I had studied the work of Joseph Campbell, and now in my mid-40s, my life seemed to be the symbol of what he was referring to when he said, I dont believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive. Then, almost by accident, Meg found yoga. She went to her first class, rolled out her rented mat and, after 75 minutes, discovered her destiny to become a yogi. It was unbelievably liberating to be in my body, flow through the asana and take deep cleansing breaths, knowing I was connecting with a practice that had guided humans for thousands of years. With a regular practice in place, buried emotions started to come up, new awarenesses seemed to be dropping out of the sky, and the beauty and awesomeness of very simple parts of my life came to my attention. I made some difficult, long-postponed decisions. I connected with other yogis who were experiencing this same wake-up, Meg proclaims. Yoga taught Meg one of her most important life lessons, and now, at the age of 51, she lives by the idea expressed by Robert Frost: The best way out is always through. As Meg explains, There are so many times I wish my life was easier; I wish for always joy-filled moments, uncomplicated relationships and certainty in answering all the unresolved parts of me. But then Frosts words ring through my head, and my time on my mat and cushion remind me that burying the messy and less-than-perfect parts of myself is to deny myself the greatest opportunity to truly feel connected and alive. They are the fastest way through to a greater understanding of myself. With a deep desire to help others come alive in this way, Meg took a leap of faith, left her human service career behind and opened Perennial in 2011. Great care was taken in choosing the location and creating the inside space for this peaceful sanctuary. The studio is free of distraction and complexity, instead offering the simplicity of natural surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow the beauty of the natural world to seemingly come indoors. Students can cast their drishti gaze out onto the dynamic and ever-changing prairie and see it as a perfect metaphor for how we are meant to live our lives. Many say that being in this retreat-like setting is healing all by itself. Megs business model revolves around three commitments, which carry through her everexpanding vision for Perennial. First, to honor the true nature of yoga by offering yoga and meditation classes that maintain the physical, mindful and spiritual aspects of these 5000-yearold practices. She accomplishes this by infusing Perennial with authentic, deeply devoted teachers who, according to Meg, walk the talk; can

Perennial Wisdom Yoga Teacher Training

Next program starts in February 14! Perennials Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School is for students who know they want to teach or who want to deepen their own personal practice. It offers the rich experience of learning from several teachers who offer different expressions of the practice of Vinyasa yoga and meditation. Youll step deeply into the practice of yoga, learn the process for internalizing that knowledge and inner wisdom, and leave with the ability to be an inspiring yogi and an impactful teacher if that is your path!

Vinyasa and Yin yoga classes are on the schedule several times a day and every day of the week, but no cookie cutter yoga happens at Perennial, which is Megs third commitment. I believe its when our teachers combine their experience and training with their own artistic expression of the practice that authentic yoga happens and the true value of these practices are revealed to our students, Meg says. Yoga classes for beginners, therapeutic yoga, intermediate level classes and yoga for breast cancer survivors lend a special focus to the already full menu of classes. Meditation is offered regularly, and many of the yoga classes begin or conclude with a shorter meditation as well. For those who prefer the one-on-one setting to begin or deepen their practice, many of the teachers offer private sessions. Enriching workshops, kirtan and yoga/music events round out the experience of yoga and meditation at Perennial. Perennials Yoga 101 is a free 75-minute introductory class for those brand-new to yoga. It is offered because of Megs recognition that it can be intimidating to walk into your first yoga class. This is my opportunity, she says, to welcome new students with open arms and into a practice I believe will forever change their lives for the better. Yoga and meditation truly are for everyone! Whether youre seeking balance in life, mental, physical or emotional health, spiritual enrichment, a reclamation of your self or just a new, challenging physical program, let Meg and the other inspirational teachers at Perennial get you started on your life-changing yoga and meditation practice today. Theyve made it easy attend a free Yoga 101 class or take advantage of their wonderful new student introductory offer.

see others and are willing to be seen; willingly invest their time to make a sincere connection to their students; are willing to show how they still fall down, but, with the practices of yoga and meditation, get back up and on with this epic adventure of life. From her career in human services, Meg learned that true healing and transformation only happens when there is a genuine exchange between human beings. So, her second commitment is to create a space where satsang can be experienced. A satsang, Meg explains, is a place where people seeking greater truth and understanding about life gather together. Everyone here becomes both student and teacher for themselves and for others, and we hold the space for one another to share, explore and deepen what it means to be vibrantly alive, living our own lives the best way we know how.

on this grew stronger. Not sure where to turn, I contacted an old friend who had once worked as a life coach in the Madison area. After catching up on each others lives, I explained my situation and asked for her advice. She immediately responded that I had to go to the Inner Essence Center.

After a bit of hesitation, I overcame my fear of the unknown and called for an appointment. I explained my desire to have a deeper understanding of my life and my souls purpose. The caring man on the phone, who introduced himself as Barry, recommended that I have an astrological birth chart reading, followed by an energetic healing session. Given my old friends high opinion of their work, I agreed to try these services. After setting up the days and times to meet, Barry asked me some questions about my birth, including where I was born, and the date and time. Upon arriving at the Inner Essence Center for my appointment, I was greeted by a kind couple who introduced themselves as Barry Kerr and Kristine Gay, the owners. They guided me to a peaceful room, where the three of us took our seats. (Kristine sat in on my astrological birth chart reading to listen and learn. Also, it was recorded.) Barry began by sharing my astrological chart, which he had put together based on the data he collected during our phone call. Then he confirmed a few things he had found in my chart: a separation/communication gap with a

sk anyone what a surrogate is, and you typically get the response, A woman who carries a baby for someone else. If you dig deeper, most people dont know the details of surrogacy, such as who needs a surrogate, what the process is and whether there is compensation involved. Most people who desire to form a family will never need to know this information. However, for thousands of people each year, their dream of becoming parents only comes true via surrogacy. Families in our very own Wisconsin communities have formed via surrogacy. And, many Wisconsin women choose to be surrogates for families from Wisconsin, and across the United States and even the globe.

A true surrogate is a woman who is genetically related to the child she is carrying. The pregnancy comes from her egg and develops in her uterus. The sperm is usually from the father-to-be and sometimes from a sperm donor. Prior to advances in reproductive technology, this was the most common type of surrogacy. However, complicated legal and social issues make true surrogacy less desirable

My S.A.D. addiction
By Dr. Steve Puckette

Hello. Im Steve, and Im addicted to the Standard American Diet (S.A.D). Im 60 days clean. Why just days instead of years, you ask? Because I, like most of us, was raised with plenty of junk food in the house. Up until about 100 years ago, people lived on organic foods. The development of fertilizers and pesticides introduced us to conventionally grown foods and a better living through chemistry attitude towards food. The high demand for convenience and shelf life degraded our food supply one more step and brought us to the Standard American Diet of highly processed and junk foods, which have little, if any, nutritional value. Like many of my generation, my mom gave me treats as rewards for good behavior and as expressions of love. Junk food has been intricately and indelibly woven throughout my life. It satisfies my desire to live spontaneously. I can live off of the modern landscape and find food wherever I happen to be thanks to the fast food industry. I can be self-sufficient. The long shelf lives of processed foods as well as frozen and canned pre-made meals have cut the ties to the home kitchen and scratch meals every day. None of this is actually true. Dr. Pepper and slice-and-bake

chocolate chip cookies arent really love, but they do remind me of Saturday morning breakfasts with my Dad. We are whole human beings. We have many needs and desires. Food and chemical nourishment are just a couple of them. When I have a craving for Dr. Pepper, what is really happening is I am missing my Dad. Once I recognized that, Dr. Pepper became totally inadequate. But it took me years to realize the connection. This is food nostalgia. Recognize it for what it is. Get nostalgic. Remember the past and celebrate the important parts of your history. But I bet it wasnt really the Dr. Pepper in your life that made those times special. Drinking Dr. Pepper now and knowing how it will make me feel later, doesnt give me the same warm fuzzy that it used to. Since food has emotional and social meaning, it is extremely stressful to make abrupt changes to our diets. When we make a change to an autoimmune diet, success depends on fanatical abstinence of the foods we react to. This is why gluten-free junk food exists. Not because being gluten free automatically makes it healthy, but because it is a less-damaging alternative to satisfying our emotional and/ or social needs. If food is a way to connect with our community or with our past, we can still do so without risking the immune systems extreme reactions to gluten or other things like dairy and soy. As we near the end of 2013, we are moving into the time of the year that is often filled with a variety of holiday parties and social gatherings. Food seems to be a central piece to each of these celebrations. So enjoy the festivities, honor your traditions and think thoughtfully about what your food choices really mean for you. Food nourishes us in many ways. Lets eat wisely for our total health, not just for our chemical health, while we get stronger.

Jane seeks her souls purpose continued from page 36

parent while I was growing up, anger issues and my sensitivities to others feelings/emotions. Well, he sure hit those realities on the head! Next, Barry told me that my souls purpose was to work on relationships. Relationships are my souls career, he said. When Barry stated that my assertiveness in getting things accomplished has caused me to struggle in relationships throughout my life, I was floored. That was me to a tee, but I had never quite looked at it that way. I suddenly had a new understanding of my actions and the consequences that followed. About a week later, I had my soul-guided energetic healing session. After catching up on a few things from my first session, I was lead to a comfortable room and asked to lie down on the table. Kristine used a tuning fork to begin the process. As soft music played in the background, Kristine helped me connect to my body and intuition so that my own higher knowing could guide me to the memories most relevant to my need for healing in the present time. I began to re-experience a memory of walking alone on a long, steep, winding road and, once again, could feel the loneliness that I had experienced as a child. While Kristine held the energy of love and safety, I was encouraged to let those emotions out. While there were times I felt like screaming, I held back ... but the tears did flow. Throughout my session, I could feel the genuine love and compassion that both Kristine and Barry had for me. It seemed as though they had a deeper understanding that I so strongly desired to know. When the session ended, I received hugs and comfort from them. They also provided me with a complete book about my astrological reading. As I walked outside, it seemed like something had lifted from me. The sky was a little bluer and the clouds a little fluffier, like I could ride them if I wanted to! Some may say that I was experiencing peace or bliss. That is the exact feeling that Id like to hold onto for this lifetime and lifetimes to come. Like many others, I have experienced shame and guilt about some of the decisions Ive made in the past. Barry and Kristine helped me understand that all of those things had been put in place a long time ago for my souls growth. Without a certain amount of pain and suffering, there would be no reason to strive for spiritual growth. These lessons were no mistake; they were gifts that led to spiritual growth. Having an understanding of where Ive been in past lives and of my souls current purpose makes it easier for me to see my pattern and make different choices. The followup session gave me much-needed healing from the shame, guilt and hurt inside. My overall experience at the Inner Essence Center was so meaningful that I later signed up for a 6-month course that Barry and Kristine offer. I am very much looking forward to it! If you are in need of some healingand desire tofeel good again, I encourage you to work with Barry and Kristine. A new cycle
By Rick Martin

o its raking season, yippee! Were all done mowing the grass, but now we have to keep it clean. This reminds me of an idea that I read about a couple years ago in Sustainable Times magazine, so Im going to pass it along to you. Lets think about this: We suburbanites have chosen to cut down all of the freegrowing flowers with long-lasting nectar that attracted butterflies, birds and honey bees. We have chosen to call the violets milk weeds and dandelions weeds and have gone to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass. Grass is not that colorful and only attracts grubs and worms. It takes a lot of water to keep it growing, and when it does grow, we cut it down. Then, instead of saving it for compost, we rake it up, put it into bags and pay to have it hauled away. After all this work, we should be relieved when fall arrives and it stops growing so fast. Youd think that would save a lot of work. But no, thats when we haul out the hoses again and pay to water it even more. It can now continue to grow, and we can continue to cut it and pay to have it hauled away. Well, at least we have kept some of the trees. They grow nice beautiful leaves that provide us wonderfully cool shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep
40
Natures Pathways | November 2013

moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. Its a natural cycle of life, right? Not exactly! We suburbanites have drawn up a new cycle. As soon as the leaves fall, we rake them up and pay to have them hauled away. What do we do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose? After throwing away the leaves, we go out and buy mulch. And where do we get this mulch? We just go out, cut down trees and grind them up! What is beautiful about many homes in the Madison area, however, is that they are allowing natural cycles to take over. While out driving, isnt it refreshing to see a yard that is in full bloom? I actually wish I wasnt driving many times. I wish I was walking and could stop and stare. Then I take it a step further as I think about how these people avoid the weekly billowing of gas and oil smoke involved in mowing it all down. They also get to see the rain and wind blow on their colorful spaces, instead of thinking about the rain just washing the pesticides and weed killers away (into the lakes). I am very grateful to these people who are taking the initiative to be a little different. Eventually, I hope there can be a continuous landscape of wild growing flowers over the city blocks. I hope that a day might come that even the suburbs will begin this new trend of beauty.

In fact, this year, start a compost pile or buy a bin. It is so easy to do! Then your punkins and gourds can go in there and be part of the best and richest dirt your plantings have ever had next spring. These decisions are personal, but have global impact. I am also thankful for everyone who does their little part to help Earth breathe easier and healthier. Many people are eating more locally grown vegetables (which need less fuel to transport), maintaining compost piles or bins, buying more energy efficient appliances, carpooling to work and using the most natural type of diapers available! Keeping plastic and chemicals off of our childrens skin is a healthy choice. The use of cloth diapers also saves consumption, as were not contributing disposable diapers to landfills. Its good to note that cloth diapers can be used many times before they are sent off to retirement. They are used by car washes and sent to less-fortunate countries where people are currently using newspaper or whatever else might be available for diapers. Cloth diapers are a win-win for us and the environment.

What is surrogacy? Can just anyone become a surrogate? continued from page 37

the people who seek surrogates are: Women with medical conditions that make carrying pregnancies themselves very dangerous. Gay couples or single men wanting to become dads. Women with uteruses that are not shaped to carry pregnancies. Women who have experienced five, six or more miscarriages with no identifiable causes.

Exploring the option of becoming a gestational surrogate

Requirements for gestational surrogates

The American Society of Reproductive Medicines (www.asrm.org) guidelines for women considering surrogacy include, but are not limited to, those who: Loved being pregnant and want to help others (very important!). Are age 21-45. Were pregnant at least once with a term delivery and are raising that child. Have had less than five pregnancies and a maximum of three previous C-sections. Embrace healthy living habits. Are emotionally and financially stable. Arent taking medications harmful to a pregnancy. Have a reliable support system.

When parents-to-be seek gestational surrogates, they are always attempting to create the most optimal arrangements for safe, successful, healthy pregnancies and deliveries for the surrogates and for the babies. These goals are kept in mind when considering which women are ideal for becoming surrogates. Typically, potential candidates are helper types who really enjoyed being pregnant, but are not interested in more diapers and sleepless nights. They also take surrogacy seriously by learning about the process and deciding if it is a good fit for their families. Most women who are considering becoming surrogates contact a service agency that specializes in guiding, supporting and matching gestational surrogates and parents-to-be from their first point of contact through the delivery. The gestational surrogate application process involves: Completing an online application. Participating in a phone interview. Obtaining all medical and delivery records. Participating in a home visit. Passing a background check. The applicant also writes a letter to the potential parents-to-be describing herself,

her family, her pregnancies and her personal motivation for becoming a gestational surrogate. In addition, an agency representative spends time with the woman discussing her preferences. Common questions include: Are there certain parents-tobe you would like to help? Would you be willing to carry twins? Can you travel for this process or do you need to stay local? Compensation issues are also covered at this time. Once the surrogate application is complete, the service agency arranges meetings between the gestational surrogate and parents-to-be who have compatible visions of the process. However, the surrogate and parents-to-be ultimately select who they want to work with as they embark on a journey to help make a dream of parenthood come true. Return for the December issue of Natures Pathways to learn about the medical, legal and psychosocial components of preparing for an IVF cycle with a gestational surrogate.

Ctrl-Alt-Delete
By Brian R. Wussow, DC

ust 20 years ago, if youd have said the words control, alt, delete, very few people would have known what you meant. Now, this term is universally understood. When our computers dont work right, its the first thing we do. What if we could Ctrl-Alt-Delete our brains? Literally reboot rebalance, de-stress and refocus them. Stress is perceived in our brains, but its effects are felt globally. The nerve system, specifically the autonomic nerve system, is divided into two parts. One is called sympathetic and the other parasympathetic. The sympathetic system is concerned with the fight-or-flight response, whats called a defense physiology. When this is dominant, we are in survival mode. Its designed for when the saber-toothed tiger jumps out at us at the watering hole. The other half is called the parasympathetic. Its concerned with rest, digestion and the immune system. When this is dominant, the body is focused on healing. Both nerve systems are important, and they need to be kept in balance. When the stress in our lives causes our brains to get locked into sympathetic overload, we get stuck in survival mode. In other words, growth, repair and healing cannot take place with any level of efficiency. It turns out that the chiropractic adjustment is one of the most effective ways to reboot the brain. It takes about 100 biofeedback sessions to see the brain changes that a single chiropractic adjustment can create in an instant. It is the Ctrl-Alt-Delete for the human brain! Remember, stress causes the brain to go out of balance. When the brain is stressed, the body becomes stressed. If this is chronic, it leads to sickness and disease. The chiropractic adjustment reboots/rebalances the brain, which, in turn, rebalances the body, which promotes healing and health. Meditation can support this process. Breathing in stimulates the sympathetic system, while breathing out stimulates the
42
Natures Pathways | November 2013

parasympathetic system. This is why so many meditations focus on breathing out longer than breathing in. Once our brains have been rebooted, meditating regularly where we breathe in for 4 seconds and breathe out for 8 seconds can help to keep stress from knocking us out of balance again. Certain types of massage can also be helpful for this. Technology now exists to assess the balance of the nerve system. An inexpensive, well-researched, non-invasive test is called heart rate variability. Using this data can help assess your current state of balance and the health of your brain, body and nerve system. It can be used to monitor the effectiveness of lifestyle changes and therapeutic interventions. Stress is everywhere. The bodys ability to adapt to that stress dictates whether the brain will be more concerned with survival (sickness/disease) or thrival (health/healing). We are all under unprecedented stress. My recommendation to my patients is to: Ctrl-Alt-Delete their brains by getting adjusted. Reduce the stress in their lives by eating healthier, stretching and exercising regularly, and working on emotional stressors (career, finances, relationships, etc.). Reprogram their brains through meditation, visualization, prayer and/or ZenFrames.

Restore a life and sometimes a soul

Time away to do nothing (and enemas?)
By Kristina Amelong

ately, Ive felt stressed out, overwhelmed and easily triggered into a deep sense of dread by tasks that I usually handle easily answering the work phone, making lunch for my daughter, doing the dishes after a full day all simple tasks. I would try to remind myself to breathe more deeply or of how much I love this work of life: helping people, parenting and keeping a house; but I couldnt shake the overwhelm. Now, after five days at Lake Superior, I can reflect that I needed time away to do nothing. I hadnt had more than a few sustained hours away from work for over a year. Yes, I love my work and life, so I dont often get the feeling that I need a vacation, but my mind and soul were craving other things. When time away by Lake Superior emerged as a possibility, I found it surprisingly easy to cover my responsibilities. My partner and I quickly packed up our Kombuchas, sardines, wintergreen essential oil, pocket knife and iPhones, jumped into my black Prius and left Madison. Six hours later, we arrived on the shores of the immense lake, near the Devils Island sandstone sea caves in Cornucopia, Wisconsin with nothing to do. What did I find? Simple beauty: my toes meeting the lake as the surf came in and left, came in and left; an aquamarine bug Id never seen before crawling on my hand; nothingness; light meeting sand; a daddy longlegs scurrying across a stone sculpture. I also found memory and transformation. I remembered when, as a child, I would pull those towering, thread-like legs off the beautiful brown body and I felt horrified, horrified that I could add to the suffering of the world. I shivered and moved on, pleased at the changes in myself. Later that day, I found an amber moon setting on the eastern horizon of the lake, becoming a glowing tooth and then dropping
44
Natures Pathways | November 2013

down to a pinpoint of light. Moon on Lake Superior ... I had never seen the moon set in this way. Later, unbeknownst to us, the Perseid meteor shower appeared. (How did that happen?) Then, we had the pleasure of viewing the Northern Lights. All of this natural beauty in one night, as we sat on a deserted beach next to our campfire.

I like this thing called life! Sometimes I find it challenging to really share the depth of healing that Id like for everyone. Yes, enemas work. Each day when I answer the phone or read the emails at work, I get to enjoy stories about how lives have been profoundly improved. Here is one such story: About 6 months ago, thanks to a few blogs and your informational website, my life changed. Literally. I lost half of my colon and rectum from cancer. Life was miserable. With no rectum, I lived on Imodium and was not eating because I went to the bathroom for hours at a time. Anyway, I learned about your enemas and now have a life away from the restroom. If there is anyone you think I can help that is going through a rough time and is on the fence about everyday enemas, let me know. Now Im able to get back in life. I am very grateful for your passion and willingness to share your knowledge. Cranked up my hobby band again. Thank you soooo much. Bob S. I wrote back: This is awesome, Bob, and any more details would be useful! Im sure your story will make a difference to others. Im so happy you found the enema! Kristina Bob replied: OK, kiddo, here goes Life was miserable after losing half of my colon and my rectum due to stage 3 colon/rectal cancer. With no holding tank (rectum), feces would ease out 24/7. Three to four hours at a time with brief breaks. The area stayed inflamed from overuse. Sleep? Forget about it. Got to where I would not go anywhere. As grateful as I was for my doctors saving my life, I was just miserable. Was told the only option was a permanent colostomy. I tried all kinds of foods, including high-fiber options to slow it down, but nothing worked. Was diagnosed with LARS (lower anterior resection syndrome). Imodium no go. Tried everything over the counter. No go. I didnt have loose bowels or constipation, just no holding tank. Like a Pez candy dispenser, just constant small pellet eliminations. Food in general would trigger bathroom duty. My record was 23 trips to the restroom in an hour and a half one Thanksgiving. My parents just hugged me and left crying. Enough pity pot; lets get into solutions. The first enema I took gave me 23 hours of no bathroom duty. Yup, you read that right. Based on my experience, anyone that would benefit from emptying their large colon would benefit from what I call a proper enema. Was I scared to do an enema after the aftermath of chemo, surgeries, radiation, etc., etc., etc.? Sure, but I was desperate. A proper enema to me is as Kristina (angel with wings) suggests on her website. It gave so much information. I had never read that a daily enema was an option. Well, drum roll: I have done an enema a day for about five months, and guess what? No problems. Why? Beats me; I just did what was suggested. Bought a stainless bucket, quality surgical hose and medium-size nozzle. Used salve, essential oil blend Purification, splash of sea salt, goats milk soap, warm water and my iPad (something to read). Forty-five minutes later, all done. As in 24 hours done. Can you do an enema every day without problems? Absolutely. Just get the proper equipment (goes a lot faster) and the proper additives to mix in the warm water. A little weird at first with the flow of water; however, I dont even think about it anymore. A little crampy
www.naturespathways.com

after all the solution is in, then as it starts coming out its very cleansing. Has my life changed? Wow, wow, wow! Cruise, anyone? Pack the bucket and lets go. What can I eat? Anything. Do I get any sleep? Zzzzzzzzzz. Do I feel 20 again? Sorry, Charlie. Im still 50 when I creak out of bed. Is my life perfect? No. Is it better? Way mucho! Best 45 minutes of the day. Why am I writing this? I suffered almost two years before running across this website. I was desperate. Now? I have a life! Dont believe me? Check out www.gettheboomers.com. Thats me, the shy one with shades on, playing sax and keys, and singing the way I used to. You can do this. You can do this. You can do this! Bob S. (have enema, will travel) I teach people how to colon cleanse, how to relieve physical suffering, how to enhance their lives with an enema and how to feel better. And, Id like to continue to grow this colon cleanse website to its full potential as a healing resource; to share within its pages the millions of ways there are to restore a body, a heart and a soul. Yes, the enema, even daily, can restore a life and, thus, sometimes a soul, like time doing nothing but noticing existence on a getaway to Lake Superior. Triple your energy

By Joanne Flanagan

o you struggle with lack of energy on a daily basis and wish you had more? Have you tried various things (coffee, energy bars, etc.) with no results? Maybe its time for you to consider the effects of different external factors on your energy field. Electromagnetic fields can cause you to experience serious fatigue and stress. Luckily, there is a scientifically proven energy field regulator available called Equilibrex, which keeps your energy field in balance regardless

of the stressors around you. Equilibrex was designed in laboratories with the highest degree of precision to duplicate the geometrical structure of the manifestations of higher energies constituting what is commonly known as life force. It acts as a constant pulse transmitter that generates a powerful energy field similar to the one created by the forces responsible for our vital energy. This process neutralizes potentially harmful molecular vibrations by magnifying stable energy fields. The key to Equilibrexs success lies in its mathematical blueprint. Equilibrexs design is a mathematical reproduction of the universal life force geometrical configuration. Its quandra-dimensional design acts as a transformer that intensifies ascending energies by magnifying specific frequencies. It was designed by physicists on the phi mathematical ratio. Everything in nature contains this ratio. Introduce Equilibrex to any living system, and the result is a more powerful, wellbalanced and extremely healthy energy field. We all know the vital importance of a strong energy field. Modern science is now just recognizing its mere existence. A strong and balanced energy field leads to a healthy physical life, but more importantly, it insures that we are mentally ready to tackle all of our daily problems and exponentially better our lives. It has been discovered that when

Equilibrex is introduced to a living system, its entire structure rearranges itself at the molecular level to become more ordered and closer to the structure of a purer element. In fact, extensive studies have shown that contaminated aqueous solutions rapidly transform and show amazing signs of purification within a very short amount of time. When the Equilibrex Pendant is worn anywhere on the body, the living system becomes balanced and enjoys vital energy. Combine this with meditation, proper nutrition, exercise and positive thoughts, and your energy will definitely triple!
Dr. Joanne Flanagan is a world renown expert in stress-handling technology, which includes physical, mental, emotional and environmental stressors. She has worked diligently in the past ten years in determining the nature of hidden stresses that destroy vitality. The result is her invention of the Equilibrex Pendant, which lessens the effects of stress on the bio-energy field surrounding the human body. Abdominal fat, be gone!

By Hallie Ringhand

hy cant you lose abdominal fat? Why, as a man, are you experiencing increased chest fat? Why is your libido lower? The culprit could be too much estrogen. One of the most common causes of estrogen dominance is a class of compounds known as xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens are manmade compounds that mimic the effects of natural estrogen in the body. Sources of these synthetic estrogens include chemical pesticides and fertilizers, growth hormone fed to cattle, pigs, poultry and other livestock, and chemicals used in cosmetics and toiletries. Some xenoestrogens are phthalates, benzophenone-3, homosalate, 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor (4-MBC), octyl-methoxycinnamate, octyl-dimethyl-PABA and estradiol. They can also exist in coffee and other caffeinated beverages, BHA and BHT, and FD&C red dye #3. How do you know if these things are to blame for your expanding waistline? Eliminate them from your diet and your home completely for at least 30 days and journal your health symptoms. Heres how: Eat organic and/or local foods. Research whats in your synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, and select a different kind if in doubt. Eat only organic, grass-fed meat and
www.naturespathways.com

dairy. Check out www.reapfoods.org to find a farmer near you. Due to the high residue of xenoestrogens, always buy organic when purchasing these fruits and vegetables: strawberries, spinach, cabbage, pineapples, green beans, asparagus, apricots, raspberries, cherries, apples, peaches, grapes and sweet peppers.

Read the labels of your cosmetics and

skin care products. Check out www. ewg.org/skindeep for specifics on ingredients and alternatives to your current products. Because your skin is your largest organ and you absorb these directly into soft tissue, these can be especially problematic.

Caring for children with traditional Chinese medicine

By Michelle Buchanan, CA
raditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a complete holistic healthcare system that safely addresses common health concerns affecting our children. TCM encompasses more than just acupuncture; it includes Chinese herbalism, therapeutic

massage, acupressure, magnet therapy and nutritional supplements. This medicine easily helps children newborns through age eight strengthen their constitution and immune systems for long-term health and wellness.

Newborns and infants respond quickly to customized acupressure routines and therapeutic massage when used to help regulate their new digestive systems and address any asymmetrical development in the womb. Routines are developed by trained acupuncturists based on the individual needs of each baby and are taught to the parents to apply once or twice daily. New mothers report improvements with babies struggling with colic, reflux, gas, cramping and breastfeeding within two weeks. Lavender therapeutic-grade essential oil combined with infant massage has been proven to help new babies suffering from colic. One study involved newborns, from two to six weeks of age, who received abdominal massage with lavender oil by their mothers. The results showed reduced length of time crying when compared to infants in the control group.1 Breastfeeding provides little ones with nutrients that can improve health and brain function. According to the Center for Disease Controls (CDC) 2012 Breastfeeding Report Card, breastfeeding is initiated with 76.9 percent of newborns and only 47.2% of babies are breastfed at six months. Custom Chinese herbal formulas can boost milk supply and improve letdown for easier latching for mother and baby. In the Midwest, doctors are now recommending vitamin D supplementation for infants. It is important to find a brand free of food colorings, dyes and sugars. Probiotics can help with digestion and the immune system in infants. It is important to find probiotics that are specially formulated for newborns. Higher quality supplements for infants can be found at health food stores and

TCM from age one through age four

In addition to the therapies listed above, after one year of age children can safely take pediatric Chinese herbal formulas. Chinese herbal manufacturers provide herbal formulas that have been used for thousands of years in easy-to-administer, alcohol-free liquid tinctures. These pre-made formulas address common childhood issues, including:
Ear aches and sinus infections Cold symptoms and strep throat Lung congestion and chronic coughs Teething and irritability Stomachache and loose stools Bedwetting Difficulty focusing

Avoid using plastic wrap, never heat anything up in the

microwave that is in plastic, purchase as many of your groceries in things that arent packaged in plastic, use BPAfree cans and avoid using Styrofoam. Use baking soda, Borax and vinegar for cleaning whenever possible. Avoid using dryer sheets, and use laundry detergent with few ingredients or make your own! A whole house water filtration system is something to consider because our tap water also contains xenoestrogens.

Custom Chinese herbal formulas are another option for complex health concerns and chronic conditions. These formulas are prepared into powdered granules that can be added to juice or yogurt. In addition, custom acupressure and therapeutic massage routines are enjoyed as bedtime rituals to promote self-healing. High-quality vitamin and mineral support is recommended starting at age two. Current farming practices and diets high in processed foods are creating mineral deficiencies and diets high in fats from vegetable oils. Omega-3 fish oils, minerals and vitamin D supplements are important for proper brain, hormone and immune system function.

You dont have to live in a box of fear, but if you have a nagging health issue that you are trying to address, why not rule out all possibilities? Go into this elimination process in a way that makes sense for you and your family. My family and I have eliminated all food and drink xenoestrogen possibilities, as well as detergent and cleaners. Next on the list are personal care products and cosmetics. We have done this over several months, and it HAS made a difference in our health. It can do the same for you!

TCM from age four through age eight

In addition to the above-mentioned therapies, children around age four and older respond well to magnet therapy. Low-gauze magnets are used to stimulate acupuncture points to encourage the body to heal itself. At this age, children understand why we apply the magnets and how to be responsible when leaving them on for a few hours or overnight. Children can now participate in Japanese-style techniques used to choose the best point location for each child individually. For children at any age, TCM offers several natural, safe and effective options to address any health concerns. Prior to age nine, the health of children improves quickly and easily with a proper direction, and a stronger constitution can make a difference in health for a lifetime. The earlier health concerns are addressed, the more quickly they respond to holistic medicine. Always work with licensed healthcare providers specializing in pediatric care to build lasting positive relationships.

Carrot love
By Debi Morton

he virtues of carrots are endless! Carrots make a wonderful holiday side dish. This vegetable goes savory, sweet and sour without effort, and can be eaten raw or steamed, stewed, roasted, grilled, fermented, made into soup, added to smoothies and, dont forget, made into carrot cake! They are a portable snack. And, a vegetable that is sometimes taken advantage of. We think carrots will always be there. They have longevity in our root cellars and refrigerators, sometimes sprouting but still good to eat! Carrots are beautifully orange and brighten every dish with color.

This accent color is also what makes it so healthy affording us beta carotene (see health benefits). The only downside I can think of about carrots is that they are a little hard to grow well. They need deep, cultivated soil, as in a raised bed or sand, and they need steady moisture to avoid cracking (see growing & harvesting).

Cooking

Carrots are a pleasure to cook with and go well with many spices and rhizomes (ginger, turmeric and galangal). The cupcake pictured is carrot cake with cardamom, and fresh and candied ginger icing, which we make at my shop. People love them! Carrots also marry with apple cider vinegar or white wine. Their flavor brightens with a little acidity. The recipe that follows features cumin and adds some acidity by using orange juice. Another acidity variation is to use tomatoes (fresh or high-quality canned), and then profit from the beautiful red contrast against the orange carrots, finishing with fresh basil, and served hot or cold. When designing your dish, dont forget to take advantage of all the ways one can present a carrot: rounds, broad slants, strips and curls (using a peeler), julienned, whole if small, mashed and even using a cookie cutter for more design effects. Happy cooking!

Carrots can be harvested at any time, early for small carrots from thinnings, right through the frost. Covered with straw, they can be dug up all winter. Carrots can be stored for up to six months if done properly: cut off the end of the carrot where the green growth starts; dab in a little dirt to protect the cut; DO NOT WASH; place in a box lined with plastic, layering carrots with old, damp saw dust, and close the plastic; and keep in a cool place like a root cellar at 40-45 degrees. Next year, start sowing this cool-weather crop in Wisconsin from April to July (see Organic Gardening Growing Guide).

Health benefits

According to healthaliciousness.com, Beta carotene is a carotenoid compound responsible for giving fruits and vegetables their orange pigment. A powerful antioxidant, beta carotene has been found to help protect against cancer and aging. Beta carotene is

a fat soluble vitamin, so eating the following foods with a fat like olive oil or nuts can help absorption. Top 10 vegetables in beta carotene are: sweet potato, kale, carrots, turnip greens, mustard greens, spinach, dried herbs, butternut squash, lettuce and collards.

Carrots with Cumin

Contributed by Benot Guichard, www.foodandwine.com/chefs/benoit-guichard These beautifully seasoned carrots were on the menu when Benit Guichard reopened Jamin, in Paris, France. The chef s secret weapons are orange juice (which adds a note of fruity acidity to the carrots as they cook) and cumin seeds.
Ingredients: 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 pounds carrots, sliced on the diagonal -inch thick Sea salt 1/2 cup fresh orange juice Directions: 1. Set a small skillet over moderate heat for 2 minutes. Add the cumin seeds and toast, shaking the pan constantly, until the seeds darken slightly and are fragrant, about 1 minute. Immediately transfer the seeds to a plate to cool completely. In a spice mill or mortar, grind half the cumin seeds to a fine powder; add to the whole cumin seeds and set aside. 2. In a large skillet, warm the oil over moderately high heat. Add the carrots and stir to coat with oil, then reduce the heat to low and season lightly with salt. Add the orange juice, cover and cook, stirring often, until just tender, about 15 minutes. Season with the cumin mixture and salt, and cook, uncovered, until the carrots are lightly caramelized, about 15 minutes. Serve warm. Make ahead: The carrots can be refrigerated for up to 1 day. Reheat gently before serving.

Living a life of purpose

By Teresa Martens

Love will immediately enter into any mind that truly wants it, but A Course in Miracles it must want it truly.

hat if I told you the only purpose you have in this life is to love? Sounds easy enough, doesnt it? Your soul purpose is to love and accept yourself, and once that is achieved, to spread that love and acceptance to others, to Mother Earth, and even to situations or circumstances. So many people feel disconnected and empty, and are living with anxiety or stress-related illnesses simply because they think they should be living a life of purpose; and most often they dont know what that purpose is or even what it looks like, but for some reason they know they should be living it. We put so much pressure on ourselves to find what that purpose is because someone has told us that we have a purpose. They say, Follow me and Ill show you what your purpose is. Follow this path or follow that path, the truth is youre still not following your path. No one, no

matter what they say or claim, can tell you what your purpose is the reason why you chose to come to the earth realm. That reason is specific only to you, and unless you look into the wisdom of your heart and do the work that is required to find it, you will not come to an understanding or find the inner peace and calm you ultimately want for yourself. Stop the madness! Find a quiet place to sit, preferably out in nature, and go inside your heart. Look into the wisdom of your heart to find the answers. You know what they are, but you just dont trust yourself enough to believe that you know. Perhaps thats a good place to start. Work on trusting yourself. When you tune in to the messages and signs that you receive every day, you will come to that place of knowing. Once in that place of knowing, you will begin to realize that the answers have always been there, sitting dormant, waiting for you to unlock the door, step inside, and partake of the beautiful, tangible knowledge and wisdom that you were born with. You just forgot what it was. When we are children, were so tapped into the knowledge and wisdom we came to earth with. As we grow older and begin to learn the ways of the world, we begin to forget or were told to forget. Stop playing or talking to that invisible friend, were told as we get older and begin to embarrass our parents, friends or, worse, ourselves. We lose sight of what we came here to do because others dont understand what their purpose is, let alone anothers. As children, we are free and unencumbered, and are totally living in love and acceptance. As we grow older, we are taught whether knowingly or unknowingly by our elders that this person, place or thing is unacceptable. And we begin to become angry, disconnected, lonely and forgetful forgetful of our purpose, which is simply to love. Try living for one day in love. Love your alarm clock that

Healing digestive distress

By Lindsay Geier, LAc, LMT
t seems everywhere you look these days there are headlines about lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance, food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome and leaky gut syndrome. There appears to be a virtual epidemic of digestive distress. Even those of us without these issues can experience bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue and weight gain on occasion.

What is going on with our collective digestion?

These symptoms and syndromes are all indications of a weakness in the spleen system, the main organ system of digestion in Chinese medicine. A healthy spleen system should help break down and separate the food we eat into two parts: the pure or nutrient-rich part that is used to create energy for daily activities and to help build new tissues in the body; and the turbid, or waste material. In Chinese medicine, digestive upset can arise from one of many causes, including poor diet (processed foods that contain more chemicals and less nutrition, or too many rich, fatty foods), inappropriate eating habits (skipping meals, overeating, eating on the go, etc.), stress (hormonal and chemical changes occur in response to mental and physical stress that effect the digestive system) and miscellaneous causes like antibiotic use, for example. Any one of these causes can weaken and/or overwhelm the spleen system. Once the spleen is weakened, it can get a little lazy, no longer doing a good job of separating the pure from the turbid. This can result in excretion of nutrients that would usually be absorbed and retention of waste materials that can lead to inflammation. Unfortunately, once digestive issues start, they can trigger a domino effect and become self-propagating. In Chinese medicine, once the spleen is weakened, it is difficult to correct the issue without pointed lifestyle changes or outside intervention. The same idea is true in Western medicine as well; poor digestion can lead to inflammation, inflammation can lead to poor absorption and other health issues, which can cause stress and lead to a further compromise of the digestive system.

system by eating smaller meals with more nutrient-rich food choices, ideally foods that are lightly cooked or warmed (oatmeal, and soups or stews that are loaded with vegetables and whole grains or legumes are a great options). The idea here is that part of the burden of digesting/breaking down the food into its usable components is done through the cooking process, so your spleen system doesnt have to work as hard to access those nutrients. The third step is to strengthen the spleen system. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been used for thousands of years to return balance and strength to the spleen system. Of course, there are at-home tips to try as well to help improve digestion:
Exercise regularly and get your Zzzs: These are two keys

to lowering the levels of stress hormone that can wreak havoc on digestion. Stay hydrated: Your digestive track works much like a plumbing system; you need enough fluid to keep things moving along smoothly. Get your fiber: The bulk provided by indigestible fiber acts likes a broom, sweeping through the intestines to make sure no waste gets left behind to cause inflammation. (Tip: try to get approximately 25-35g/day.) Probiotic supplements: Help restore the naturally occurring good bacteria in the gut with a course of probiotics, or about one month of daily use. (Tip: not all probiotics are created equally. Look for a brand that submits to third-party testing to verify the number of strains of bacteria, as well as viable CFUs or colony forming units.) Omega-3 supplements: These act as the backbone of your bodys own anti-inflammatory chemicals and help naturally decrease any inflammation in the gut. Spice it up: Many cooking spices not only add flavor to healthy food choices, but also are actually beneficial to digestion as well. Some top picks include black pepper, cardamom, coriander, cumin, turmeric, fennel and ginger.
Lindsay Geier is a licensed acupuncturist and licensed massage therapist, with a Bachelor of Science in biology. Her practice focuses on using acupuncture and Chinese medicine to improve overall health and wellness. She currently works at Elevation Salon & Spa, 15 N. Butler St., 3rd Floor, in Madison. So, how can we right the ship?

The first step is to identify the root cause of the digestive upset (poor diet, inappropriate eating habits, stress or miscellaneous) and remove it. The second step is to ease the burden on the spleen

Burial vs. cremation Which is right for you?

By Jone Brown, CPLP
he death of a family pet is an event that brings with it a special sorrow. Making this mournful period even more stressful is that fact that the pet parents are immediately faced with the decision of what to do with the remains of their loyal friend. Most of us think about the options for own passing, but have you thought about which option will be best for your beloved pet?

Cremation

Burial

Given the necessity to quickly provide a final resting place for a treasured pet, burial on or near the owners property is a popular choice made by pet owners. Not only is this method relatively inexpensive, but it can also provide the grieving owner with comforting closure in knowing that the pet has received a final resting place near their home. The addition of a memorial stone or engraved marker on or near the pets grave adds a lasting remembrance and memorial to the beloved pet. Unless you live in a rural area, local city laws and/or home associations most often prohibit pet burials on an owners property, so be sure to check the local ordinances for your area. If burial is allowed, special care must be taken to prepare a hole deep enough to discourage scavengers. A proper casket or container would need to be purchased so as to prevent a depression in the grave once decomposition begins. Realize, too, that should your pet pass in the middle of a Wisconsin winter, digging a 3-foot hole may be impossible. Gone are the days where people lived in the same houses their entire lives. What if you moved or the person who owned the land where you buried your pet sold their property? Would you be OK leaving your pet with someone you didnt know? A pet cemetery can be a viable option, though many find it challenging to locate a cemetery near their homes.
54
Natures Pathways | November 2013

If youre not sure what you want to do, cremation allows you more time to decide on your pets final resting place. When the cremation option is chosen, the grieving owner is spared the grief of handling the remains, checking the local laws regarding pet burial and digging the plot. The cremains can either be kept in a beautiful urn of your choosing next to a framed picture of the beloved pet or scattered in a yard that the animal loved to play in. If so desired, a small portion of the ashes can even be put into a tasteful piece of memorial cremation jewelry. Depending on the size of the animal and the type of cremation chosen, the price of a cremation can range anywhere from $75.00 to $500.00. As the pet industry has grown exponentially, there are now more service and product options available to pet parents. Know that you have the option of taking your pet directly to the pet funeral home/crematory after their passing or working through your veterinarian, who will subcontract the cremation service. Many crematories now offer home transportation, private viewings and even memorial services very similar to what you would expect from a human funeral home. The choice between burial and cremation is not an easy one for a pet owner to make. Losing a pet is a very emotional experience, so considering your options prior to your pets passing can make the process somewhat easier for most. While the factors of cost and convenience should be considered, ultimately it will be the heart of the pet parent that will decide upon the final resting place for the lost companion.

wakes you up to enjoy another day or the sun flowing through the window gently coaxing your eyes to open. Love your shower (or bath) and the water that cleanses you. Love your breakfast (Yes, even that burnt piece of toast. Give it to the birds and pop another slice of bread in the toaster!). Love your car that gets you to work on time. Love your job. Love yourself, your co-worker, your friend, your partner. And then, at the end of the day, love your bed as you snuggle in for the night. I suggest that you stop trying so hard to find your purpose. Spirit and your higher self already know what that purpose is. Instead, focus on your heart center, feel it filling with love, and then accept that love for yourself, watching, in gratitude, as it spreads out to others and to the world. When you start living in love, things will start to change and shift. You start creating the life youve always dreamed of, and the next thing you know, youre doing what you love and youre loving what you do. And that, friends, is living your purpose. Love really is all there is.

My pain is gone! I have energy again! I lost 30 pounds! No more brain fog! My constipation is gone! Im sleeping well again! My sons ear infection is gone and no antibiotics! These are just a few of the exclamations youd hear if you spent the day with the doctors of Wussow Chiropractic. We take our tagline Todays choice for health and vitality. very seriously, says Dr. Brian Wussow. Our new patients realize pretty quickly that theyre not going to have the typical chiropractic experience here. Your first visit is much more comprehensive than what you may have experienced in the past. We dedicate more time for these appointments because they are crucial interactions in which we can identify your sources of stress, and assess how stress has impacted your brain, your nerve system and, ultimately, your body. We use cutting-edge techniques and technology to evaluate each patient, so we can create a customized, individual program of care (not just adjustments!) that will bring you health and vitality. To help patients with not only pain resolution, but also function restoration to optimize their health requires this more comprehensive approach. The amazing healing power of the chiropractic adjustment is at the center of this. Without its ability to reboot and rebalance the brain, the body cannot utilize to the fullest the rest of the package. We use fast, efficient, gentle techniques to get patients out of pain and back enjoying their lives again. And once they are out of pain, if they choose, they can immerse themselves in the lifestyle improvement opportunities we offer, so they dont re-stress right away. This is the key to our success, shares Dr. Ingrid Recnik.

The health benefits of far infrared heat therapy

By Douglas Nicholson, LMT
here is nothing new about the concept of heat treatment. It has been used to induce sweating and promote healing throughout time. Heat treatment was utilized in ancient religious ceremonies for mental, spiritual and physical cleansing. Egyptians treated tumors with heat back in 5000 BC, and Paraminides, a Greek physician, proclaimed that induced fevers could cure any disease in 500 BC. People have

benefited from sweating and continue to do so from Turkish baths to todays modern spas. So whats different now? With the advent of far infrared (FIR) heat therapy, or light therapy, the benefits are much greater in depth and scope. Infrared is a band of light that, although not visible to the human eye, is felt as heat. FIR heat is one frequency of the light wavelength that can deeply penetrate organic substances such as the human body, and can be used as an effective adjunct to massage therapy. The BioMat is one such modality that uses amethyst and tourmaline crystals in a mat to generate FIR heat and detoxify the body. FIR heat therapy has been found to increase blood flow and white blood cell function, which in turn improves immunity. It helps to remove toxins from the body and facilitates the healing of tissues. There are numerous diseases that seem to respond to FIR heat therapy. A reduction of symptoms or improvement associated with arthritis, bursitis, rheumatism, Raynauds syndrome, Lou Gehrigs disease, Parkinsons disease, lupus and chronic fatigue all have been documented, plus many more. Due to the dilation of blood vessels and the increased oxygen flow to the joints and muscles, pain and inflammation are greatly reduced. Blood pressure is

But will you make me cluck like a chicken or rob a bank?

By Dr. James E. Todd Jr.
any people have a misconception as to what hypnosis is. This is mainly due to stage hypnosis acts and TV shows that depict hypnotized people doing things they would not normally do on their own a form of mind control. In reality, hypnosis is the practice of bringing a patient to a relaxed state, near sleep, wherein the mind is more subjective to new ideas or images. Rather than trying to control the patients mind in thought and free will, hypnosis is a process that can help the patient recondition their own thought patterns and become more in control of their state of awareness. Have you ever been driving and had to ask yourself, Have I passed that already? This is hypnosis. During that time, you are in what is called an alpha state of hypnosis. You are fully aware of everything around you, but your subconscious mind takes over for you. We go in and out of an alpha state of hypnosis several times a day and dont even realize it. It is also the lightest state of hypnosis, but where you are 200 times more susceptible to suggestion. Your mind slows down and your focus is narrowed, your breathing is slowed and you are relaxed. If you go deep enough into relaxation, you can even undergo medical procedures without pain medication or anesthesia. Since your ears never sleep, you may be fully aware of everything the hypnotist

says during the session, and that is quite normal and expected. In fact, hypnotists use this to your advantage, because if you do fall asleep, your brain is still recording everything in your subconscious mind, just as we want it to do. Once the proper suggestions have been given and accepted by the subconscious, you have 95 percent of your mind working for you, compared to the mere 5 percent of the conscious mind. What we tell our minds to believe

good or bad we will believe. Positive thoughts will equal positive results. The following Q&A addresses the most common inquiries about hypnosis: Q. Who can be hypnotized? A. Anyone with reasonable intelligence can be hypnotized. The only ones who may not be able to be hypnotized are people with severe mental disabilities and

Helping legs look and feel better

f you suffer from discomfort due to varicose vein disease, Bruce W. Cardone, M.D., and his dedicated staff at Vena The Varicose Vein Institute want to get you on the path to healthy legs! Varicose veins affect 50 percent of women ages 40 to 50 years old and 25 percent of men ages 30 to 40, and become more common with age. By age 70, 75 percent of women and 50 percent of men show some sign of varicose vein disease. Symptoms can include pain, aching, fatigue, itching, burning, tingling, swelling, cramping, restlessness and throbbing. Varicose and spider veins get worse with time, so the earlier they are treated, the better off youll be. Patients who visit Vena The Varicose Vein Institute will have a complete history taken along with an exam. Proper diagnosis is critical, Dr. Cardone says, and thats where ultrasound comes in. Dr. Cardone is board certified in diagnostic radiology and is a diplomate of the American Board of Phlebology. He is fellowship trained in diagnostic ultrasound and holds special credentials from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography as a registered vascular technologist (RVT). Treatments at Vena The Varicose Vein

Institute include several non-surgical, minimally invasive options. One is endovenous laser or radiofrequency ablation, which Cardone says is the treatment of choice for reflux of abnormal major superficial venous structures. Patients are awake during the treatment and afterwards wear medical-grade compression stockings for up to a week. Normal activity can be resumed after that. The number of endovenous treatments needed varies, depending on severity. People with large bulging veins may need additional treatment, such as microphlebectomy. And a procedure called sclerotherapy is used for smaller veins (including spider veins) that are visible to the naked eye. These procedures are safe and generally cause minimal discomfort, according to Dr. Cardone. Treatments are most often covered by insurance if Dr. Cardone confirms by ultrasound examination that the patient has varicose vein disease/reflux. In most cases, the ultrasound is covered by insurance because it is a diagnostic test. Patients are responsible

for deductibles and/or copays, of course. Regardless of which procedure you may end up receiving, the first step is making the call. You do not have to suffer from varicose vein disease, Dr. Cardone says. Advances in diagnosing the problem, as well as in the technology used to treat it, make treatment easier and more affordable than ever. You owe it to yourself and your legs to take the next step today!

reduced, cardiac performance and metabolic rate are increased, and mental acuity is improved. Athletes and the elderly can benefit from this effective means of relaxing sore muscles and stiff joints. And FIR heat therapy serves as a means of weight loss and cellulite reduction for those people who are limited or cannot exercise due to health concerns or immobility. The BioMat is ideal for any skin type and is not contraindicated for most physical disabilities or limitations. Heat therapy alone, incorporated for as little as 15-30 minutes per day, will benefit a person and promote a higher quality of life. When used in conjunction with massage therapy, the benefits are magnified exponentially. Recently there have been concerns and reports about the hazards of exposure to certain kinds of electromagnetic fields, such as those from cell phones, hightension power lines and computer usage. Infrared heating systems have been tested in Japan, as well as by the Swedish National Institute of Radiation Protection, and both have determined that infrared heating is not detrimental to a persons health, and that it actually offsets the negative effects of toxic electromagnetic sources. FIR technology has even been incorporated into the treatment of cancer, and although still experimental, the results are encouraging. Modern life is stressful, hurried and overrun with toxins. FIR heat therapy sessions with the BioMat offer a comfortable, relaxing, convenient way to reap the benefits of a full exercise workout within a short period of time, and deliver numerous health and detoxification benefits without stressing out the body. FIR is cutting-edge technology that is an effective treatment for a multitude of health issues that plague us in modern society. The future is now, and FIR heat therapy should be a consideration for all people desiring a healthier, less limiting, more fulfilling life.

children under the age of 5. In both cases, it is because they may not understand the words you are saying or be able to follow your instructions. Q. Am I sleeping? A. Actually, it is just the opposite: You are wide-awake when under hypnosis! You are very aware and focused on the words of the hypnotist, and outside sounds seem to fade away. Q. Can I get stuck in hypnosis? A. No, the hypnotic state can be terminated at any time you desire. Q. Will I tell you any deep, dark secrets? A. Not unless you want to. Hypnosis is NOT a truth serum. Q. Is hypnosis dangerous? A. No, it is no more dangerous than sitting in a recliner watching TV. The only side effect will be that you will be very relaxed afterwards. Every 15 minutes of hypnosis is equal to approximately four hours of sleep. Q. What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy? A. Hypnosis had been around for thousands of years. Hypnotherapy is simply

therapy that uses hypnosis as a powerful tool to facilitate change. Q. Are drugs used? Are there unwanted side effects? A. No drugs are used in hypnosis. Only the natural power of your mind is used to relieve symptoms and alter unwanted behavior patterns. Q. Will I be in control and aware of what is happening? A. Yes, all the time. You are not unconscious, but youre in an alternative state of consciousness with a very narrow focus of attention. You can hear everything that is being said. Nothing happens without your consent. You have absolute control. Q. Will I do anything against my will? A. No, you will not do anything that you dont think is acceptable or thats against your nature. You are in complete control at all times.
