(Miami News, 4/14/73) Photo by PINO TUROLLA 638/10 JOURNAL OF PopuLaR cuLrure Winter 1971 ‘At base, anomalies are of two kinds: (1) anomalous objects (things oF events), and (2) anomalous processes clationships). An anomalous object consists of the existence (or claimed existence) of some thing or event which is somehow a deviation from the usual, credible order of things, e.g. the sight- ing of an abominable snowman, a levitated fakir floating in the air, or a giant sea serpent. An anomalous process, however, can consist of quite ordinary things or events in some extraordinary conjunction. Thus, an occultist may believe that a pin placed in a wax image will lead to the death of someone (neither death nor wax images and pins themselves being extraordinary), or that the position of the planets at certain times ean effect the personality development of children born at certain places on the earth at those times (planetary positions and children born with personalities in themselves being ordinary events), Anomalies can be further classified as being isolated or integrated with By Marcello Truzzi cone another. Thus, some anomalies are quite singular and disconnected from ‘other anomalies. A typical example would be belief in the existence of an Un- identified Flying Object. Though some groups have turned belief in UFOs into an integrated anomaly by seeing flying saucers as vehicles piloted by angelic spacemen,17 most believers in UFOs sce them as unexplained phenonomena within an otherwise normal scientific world-view, Integrated anomalies seem to mote often consist of process anomalies than object anomalies. An occultist who believes in a set of magical processes is often likely to accept (or atleast reserve judgment on) the credibility of someone elses claim about other magical processes, but a believer in UFOs is usually no more likely to accept the claims for a Loch Ness Monster than those who disbelieve in UFOs, Since anomalous processes are usually based on the inference of strange Causalities among otherwise ordinary events (events the non-occultist would simply label as “coincidences”), the establishment of such anomalies requires more evidence to convince the skeptical than might the anomalous object. This has implications for the frequeney of belief in such anomalies (Continued on page 201) 188 Se NOVEMBER 1973 the Professional Cranks’ Newsletter 1973 - A GREAT FORTEAN YEAR Everything is happening at once! A major UFO flap began in Febr- uary and is still continuing. Monsters and A.S.S. (Abominable Swamp Slobs) have appeared in Pottstown, Pa. and Enfield, Ill. The Enfield critter had three legs, which figures since the chief witness was a crippled war veteran named McDaniel. (Another McDaniel family was the center of the 1966-67 Mothman fracas in W. Va., and the cover story of Anomaly 9 was about a man named Mopaniga who encountered "the devil” inthe Catskill Mts. one hundred years ago . Old-timers will recall that several different unrelated people, all named Reeve(s), in scattered parts of the country had UFO and monster sightings back in 1965-66. What's in a name?) In Garland, Texas (home of the famed Varo Corporation) a Blob...alive and growing...has appeared. Several well-financed, well-equipped (including helicopters and electronic gear) expeditions are exploring the northwest this summer in serious efforts to track down and capture the elusive Sasquatch, the legendary tall, hairy humanoid. One group already claims to have taken new photos of the beast. In Scotland, equally well-equipped groups are launching an all- out attempt to solve the riddle of the Loch Ness monster. And in Florida teams of scientists, including North American Rockwell's massive and somewhat mysterious project, are stepping up their investigations into the notorious Bermuda friangle...that area of the Atlantic where so many ships and planes have vanished without a trace. Let's not leave out Lost Atlantis. Mrs, Maxine Asher raised @ lot of money from a group of intrepid college students who accompanied her to Cadiz, Spain to find Atlantis. Spanish authorities were not enthused about the project and Mrs. Asher departed with the money, leaving the students behind. Lost Atlantis is still lost. Lawyer F. Lee Bailey recently told the Treasury Department he has a client who has located the long lost treasure of the Aztecs. It is in a cave in the White Sands Proving Grounds. Bailey produced some of the gold as proof. The government wasn't interested. Finally, the sun has been misbehaving this year. Unusual magnetic conditions prevail, probably accounting for some of the strange things that have been happening. Both the U.S, and U.S.S.R. have quietly sent a number of rocket probes to the sun to find out if it is planning to blow up on us this year, If not, there is a major comet which will bypass Zarth this December and put on a sky spectacular. Maybe even kill us all. It's going to be a great year. - John A, Keel ANOMALY is published at indecent intervals and distributed free.
