EXHIBIT-exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further information call 518-747-9108 or email wchs@wchs-ny.org. NEW YORK NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE (NRCS) ANNOUNCES NOVEMBER 15, 2013 AS THE EXTENDED APPLICATION CUTOFF DATE FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY INCENTIVES PROGRAM (EQIP) AND WILDLIFE HABITAT INCENTIVES PROGRAM (WHIP) FOR FISCAL YEAR (FY)2014. Applications accepted after November 15, 2013 may be considered for funding if additional application rounds are announced or for potential consideration in FY2015. All applications are competitive and are ranked based on national, state and locally identified resource priorities and the overall benefit to the environment. Although a new Farm Bill has yet to be approved, applicants may still apply for funding through the same programs offered through the 2008 Farm Bill. At the time of application, applicants must specify the resource concern(s) that they intend to address. Once further guidance on the 2013 Farm Bill is provided, NRCS will work with applicants to transfer applications to the appropriate conservation program. NRCS NY looks forward to helping farmers and rural landowners address priority resource concerns on their land, said Donald Pettit NRCS State Conservationist. Each year NRCS offers a variety of programs which help landowners address a wide range of conservation needs in New York. Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP): offers financial assistance for practices which address soil erosion, water quality and habitat degradation. Practices implemented through EQIP include strip cropping, grassed waterways and manure storage facilities. Focus areas within the EQIP program include soil health, livestock waste, habitat, forestry and grazing. Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP): helps participants restore and protect fish and wildlife habitat in grassland and shrubland areas. If you are interested in applying for an NRCS conservation program please visit our web site for information on applying at: http:// www.ny.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/general_information/how_to_apply.html. You may apply by visiting your local NRCS field office, which can be located using the web site: http://offices.sc.egov.usda.gov/locator/app?state=NY. For Albany County and Rensselaer County the office is located at the USDA Service Center, 61 State Street, Troy, NY 12180. (518)271-1740. GOOD NEWS FOR THE SALEM AREA VAN ENDEAVOR The Salem Area Van Endeavor (SAVE), under the management of the Courthouse Community Center, has welcomed a new driver to the program. Trip Sturgis is a Shushan resident, and will share the driving responsibilities with Ken White by driving on Tuesdays. SAVE is a wonderful initiative that offers free transportation for grocery needs each Tuesday and Thursday. This service is available to any individual in the Salem area in need of transportation. On Tuesdays, Trip transports his passengers to the Hannaford in Greenwich. On Thursdays, Ken makes the trip to Price Chopper in Granville. The passengers are picked up at their home around 9 am, and extra assistance is provided when needed. Any individual desiring this service should contact the dispatcher at 518-854-7497. It should be noted that both Trip and Ken volunteer their time for this initiative. The CCC is also pleased to announce that a generous grant was recently received from the Washington County Home for Aged Women, Inc. to help support SAVE. The money will be used for daily van expenses such as gas, maintenance and new tires. This much appreciated support will be of great help since this service is offered at no charge. Anyone needing this means of transportation may contact the CCC at 518-854-7053 for details. The CCC also respectfully requests readers to share the contact information with anyone who may benefit from SAVE.
YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM BENEFITS FROM FUNDS RAISED BY HUDSON RIVER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION
As part of its ongoing Community Heroes Campaign, Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) recently presented a check in the amount of $250 to Youthbuild, a program sponsored by the Troy Commission on Economic Opportunity. Each month, HRCCU chooses a local not-for-profit community organization and donates five dollars for each new member that joins or existing member that upgrades a service. To date, HRCCU has donated thousands of dollars to local organizations. In YouthBuild programs, lowincome young people ages 16 to 24 work full-time for 6 to 24 months toward their GEDs or high school diplomas while learning job skills by building affordable housing in their communities. Emphasis is placed on leadership development, community service, and the creation of a positive mini-community of adults and youth committed to each others success. Students may earn AmeriCorps education awards through their homebuilding and other community service. At exit, they are placed in college, jobs, or both. Hudson River Community Credit Unions mission is to improve the well-being of members and their families by providing quality financial services with the best overall value. Hudson River Community Credit Union has five branches located in Corinth, Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, Troy and Cohoes. The Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned and governed by its members. Anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school or businesses and other legal entities located in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties or the Towns of Cohoes, Watervliet and Green Island and their family members are eligible to join the credit union. The exhibit will run from December 7 through January 15. Local residents are invited to submit their dollhouses or "room boxes" for consideration at this juried show. Due to dollhouse sizes and space considerations at the museum, the number accepted must be limited. While entries from neighboring towns are welcome, those with connections to Warrensburg are especially encouraged. Submission forms must be received by November 1. Box 441, Warrensburg, NY 12885, delivered to the Museum (see below) or submitted on line to delbert33me@yahoo.com. Acceptance will be based on age, uniqueness, quality, furnishings, whether it is hand-made or factory produced, and its historic provenance. Prior to making a final decision, members of the Dollhouse Committee will visit the location to confirm their decision. The Museum will arrange for pick-up and return of the selected items, if so desired. Once installed at the museum, lenders will be invited to arrange furniture to their liking, if preferred.
