his book was created using ABCexplorer. ABCexplorer is a freeware software program for windows written by Grard Dumont in Pouldergat, France. ABCexplorer converts ABC les (a text based sheet music le) into actual sheet music that can be viewed on the computer screen or printed. ABCexplorer also has the ability to play the music, slow down or speed up the tempo, and transpose the music into dierent keys. By using the Hall Crystal Flute format le ABCexplorer is also capable of displaying nger patterns underneath each note as a learning aid for beginning ute players. This option may be toggled on and o. The Hall Crystal Flute format le is now included with the ABCexplorer program and is also available from the link at the bottom of the page. To turn on the Hall Crystal Flute nger patterns in ABCexplorer, click on [Options] from the top menu bar, then click on [external tools]. Next click on the le folder button just under [Path of the format le for the tablatures:]. Then click on [hall_ute.fmt] to select the le. Click [OK] and you're done. To toggle the nger patterns on and o click the [tablature button] see illustration. By using the tin whistle format le ABCexplorer will display the nger patterns for the tin whistle. The whistle_new.fmt is included with the ABCexplorer program.
Tablature Button

The ABCexplorer program is an excellent tool for learning the Hall Crystal Flute or tin whistle. ABCexplorer contains no advertising and is completely free. You can download ABCexplorer from the link below. If you would like to use this book with ABCexplorer, the link for the free ABC le is available below. ABC notation is a system designed to notate music in plain text format. It was designed primarily for folk and traditional tunes of Western European origin (such as English, Irish and Scottish) which can be written on one stave in standard classical notation. At the time of this writing around 390,000 tunes, available as free sheet music or midi sound les, are available on the ABC notation website.

About This Book:

This book uses the D ngering for all the songs, but can be used with all sizes and keys of crystal utes. D ngering is standard for the crystal ute as it places the notes on the middle of the sta and makes it much easier to read. When used with an instrument that is not in the key of D, the nger pa erns become transposing ngering. The song will be transposed up or down according to the key of the instrument that is being played.

Accidental Notes:
For most six hole utes and whistles, the diatonic notes will all nger the same. However, you may nd varia on in the ngering of the accidental notes. You may have be er results using an alternate ngering for some of these notes. The chart below shows several op onal ngerings for you to try. While the best eort has been made to pick the best ngering for each song, not all of the alternate ngerings will work on all utes and whistles. You need to pick the one that sounds the best, or for fast passages, the one that is the easiest to nger.

Veiled or Half holed notes:

By varying the seal of the lowest covered hole, the ute can slide from one note to the next. The correct pitch for a semitone is formed when the tone hole is about one quarter covered. These notes are tuned by the player and are best played by stopping the air with your tongue un l the nger is in the correct posi on.

If you are playing the Hall Crystal Flute in D, this chart will play the exact notes shown below. If you are playing the Hall Crystal Piccolo in D the actual notes played will be one octave higher than shown below. For all other Hall Crystal Flutes and Piccolos, you can use this chart as a transposing chart. The D fingering chart is the standard because it places the notes in the center of the music staff making the music easier read. The keys of D and G are easily played using the D chart and are common keys for Irish and folk music.
