How I Journal
For instructions on how to make your own journal, click here.

Paper:

I LOVE a!riano artistico "either natural or !ri#ht white$ %&' l!. hot press "smooth$

watercolor paper. (ou can #et the !est prices throu#h www.)ick!lick.com or www.)anielsmith.com )epen)in# on who*s runnin# a sale. I !uy the sheets in the ++,-. si/e an) cut them )own to make a journal out o them. "I*ll e,plain journal !in)in# in the ne,t 0how1to0$. 2nyway...o course, any paper will )o, !ut I ha3e come to know an) a)ore this paper in particular. 4ry !uyin# a sheet or two, cuttin# it )own to 5,%', an) then just journalin# on the in)i3i)ual pieces o paper. 6o not !uy 2rches unless you )o not plan on ol)in# it. It cracks alon# the ol) an) e3en thou#h may !e cheaper, is not #oo) or !in)in#.

First Layer: 7atercolor.

7hen I ha3e my 5,%' " a3orite si/e$ journal !oun) an) rea)y to #o, I*ll just )o a color wash on the irst %' pa#es or so "a ter those irst ew pa#es #et completely ille) I then )o the ne,t %' pa#es$. I use either 6aniel 8mith tu!e watercolors, 9ol)en li:ui) acrylics, or occasionally other paints such as lui) acrylics ma)e or pens or twinklin# h+o*s. I just s:uirt paint )irectly rom the tu!e onto the pa#e an) smoosh it aroun) co3erin# the pa#e with color. I )on*t necessarily try to make any )esi#ns at this point, !ut rather play with color com!inations an) enjoy the process o paintin#. 4ry li tin# o the paint with a paper towel while still wet on some pa#es, or just playin# aroun) with )i erent i)eas that come to you. (ou can sprinkle salt on a watercolore) pa#e !ut must wait a lon# time or it to )ry. when thorou#hly )ry, !rush o the salt an) you*ll see a won)er ul te,ture in the paint. 2lso try takin# a re#ular ol) ;rayola crayon in a li#ht color an) )rawin# a ran)om )esi#n on the pa#e !e ore paintin#. <e,t, usin# the watercolors in a )arker sha)e, paint o3er the crayon. (ou will see a 3i!rant line emer#e rom the crayon that looks antastic with )arker watercolors.

8econ) Layer: ;olla#e.

I like to cut a shape out o a lar#e color=pattern that I mi#ht in) in a ma#a/ine. For instance, look or colors=patterns you especially like in the clothes o a ashion ma#a/ine, or the so a*s or curtains in a )ecoratin# ma#a/ine. cut strips, stars, circles, !lumps, whate3er...an) a)) them to your journal. I usually ha3e a piece o colla#e that I really like an) I*ll look throu#h my %' painte) pa#es to see which pa#e it looks !est on. 4he ima#e may !e in pink an) oran#e !ut it mi#ht look super! on the tur:uoise pa#e you painte). start placin# ima#es here an) there on the pa#es, makin# !or)ers aroun) the e)#e an) somewhat workin# on a theme or the mi))le... or instance, houses, lowers, lea3es, people, aces, spheres, trian#les, etc. Ha3e somethin# in min), so you know which shapes to cut out an) #enerally place. Howe3er...)o this ast an) without thinkin# too lon# an) har) a!out it. >e instinctual a!out it an) )o not think too much a!out the outcome !eyon) a 3a#ue i)ea. 6o not a)) too much colla#e. Pieces here an) there are #oo) !ut lea3e yoursel room or other layers. you can always come !ack an) a)) more. 4o in) #oo) colla#e o))er, look throu#h ma#a/ines upsi)e )own, so your min) can*t associate as well with what it is seein#. 2lso...e3en i you !uy my colla#e sheets, use parts o the ima#es rather than the whole ima#e. >e rankenstein an) put )i erent thin#s to#ether to help it !ecome more your own. "a ter #ettin# some inishe) pa#es un)er your !elt, take your journal )own an) make color copies o the pa#es, makin# re)uce) copies an) enlar#e) copies as well. 4hen use parts o these pa#es in new an) )i erent ways in uture journalin# pa#es.$ Oh an) a!out a)hesi3e or the colla#e: I*3e !een usin# )ou!le si)e) tom!o mono a)hesi3e in a roller. Howe3er, we just oun) a new pro)uct which we like so much we are carryin# it. ";lick here to or)er$ It is calle) 4rio tape an) has - )i erent wi)ths o )ou!le si)e) a)hesi3e in the same applicator.

4hir) Layer: ;rayons.

4his is my a3orite part an) a3orite me)ium. I use caran )*ache neocolor II*s. 4hese are water solu!le artist crayons an) can a)) lots o ener#y an) color to your pa#e. 4hey also help incorporate your colla#e into your pa#e rather than the colla#e just sittin#

on top, lookin# like you just stuck it )own. I #o aroun) the e)#e o my colla#e pieces with this crayon, )rawin# a little on the ima#e an) a little o the e)#e o the ima#e. I also use these crayons to chan#e the color or )esi#n on the piece o colla#e itsel , makin# it more my own. 8ometimes I use these crayons to )raw wor)s as well. 2lthou#h I rarely a)) water to the crayons which make them into a paint1like me)ium, you can )o that as well. Howe3er, !e care ul to just a)) small amounts o water "with the tip o a in#er$, so you )on*t start wrinklin# the pieces o super thin colla#e pieces rom ma#a/ines.

Fourth Layer: Pens an) pencils.

I like neon #el pens, colore) pencils, #raphite, Fa!er ;astel PI44 !rush tippe) pens "#reat or #oin# o3er the crayon an) #lossy colla#e$, Fa!er ;astel PI44 super ine in !lack "lo3e this pen or writin#...!ut it won*t #o o3er the crayon$, an) assorte) other pens I pick up here an) there. I use these instruments or )oo)lin#, writin#, a))in# )etails to some o the colla#es, an) !asically messin# aroun) with lots o )etails. 4he colore) pencils are #oo) or sha)in# an) a))in# )epth here an) there an) e3en more color.

Lastly:

I keep workin# ? workin# ? workin# on the pa#es, jumpin# aroun) !etween the .1 %' that I painte), always in)in# a pa#e I eel like a))in# somethin# to. It takes a lon# time or me to eel the pa#e is inishe). as lon# as there are empty spots, it isn*t inishe). Howe3er...when I inally eel like they are close to !ein# )one or I am rea)y to mo3e on to new stu , I*ll paint the ne,t .1%' pa#es an) !e#in all o3er a#ain with the layers. I like to )o all the art1ie stu at home an) )o all the writin# when I am out at co ee shops or !ookstores. 4he two acti3ities are totally )i erent an) you*ll ha3e more success o you )on*t try to )o !oth at the same time. It is a lot o un to !e in the moo) or writin# in your journal an) openin# it up to in) little spaces here an) there on the pa#es that you ha3e alrea)y )ecorate). (ou ill in all the holes with wor)s an) your pa#e will !e ull, ener#etic an) )one....althou#h I usually #o !ack a ter the wor)s are written an) work it e3en more with colore) pencils, #el pens, ink, whate3er I eel in the moo) or. lastly...no, I )on*t seal or spray my pa#es. I I )o occasionally use port olio !ran) water solu!le oil pastels "which a)) #reat color as well$ I ru! them in 3ery well an) they simply )on*t trans er to the other pa#e. I ha3e a eelin# this has somethin# to )o with the #oo) paper I use. It seems to suck the me)iums )own insi)e an) trap them there. 9oo) luck journalin#. an) most o all, ha3e un with it. play an) )on*t care a!out how it turns out. you will ha3e pa#es you like !etter than others an) some pa#es turn into one #iant mess...!ut you learn rom these thin#s. an) or the recor)...I ha3e a lot that come out !a). >ut sometimes, these !a) pa#es turn into some o my most a3orites, !ecause you put e,tra e ort into them tryin# to turn them into pa#es that work.
