Research & Development

Facilities Directory
Introduction Greater Washington Research &
Development Facilities Directory

The Greater Washington Initiative, a regional economic development marketing

organization, developed this inaugural directory of research facilities in the
Greater Washington Region—encompassing 21 jurisdictions in Northern Virginia,
Suburban Maryland and the District of Columbia.

This project was undertaken to begin to define the breadth and scope of the
region’s research capabilities. The directory serves as a business resource by
highlighting the region’s diverse array and quantity of public and private sector
research assets. It also provides information on the type of leasable lab space
existing in the region. This information will allow firms with temporary or start-up
needs potential access to existing facilities. In addition the directory highlights
potential partnership opportunities.

This directory represents a list of participating institutions and is not comprehen-

sive. We hope to expand its coverage over time. We welcome your comments
and feedback. If you would like to add your organization to this directory,
please contact the Greater Washington Initiative at www.greaterwashington.org
or call us at 202-857-5999.
Letter from the Chairman

The Greater Washington Initiative is pleased to present the region’s

first Research & Development Facilities Directory. With this publication,
we recognize the profound contribution research labs and facilities
make to the region’s business community.

This directory demonstrates the diversity of research institutions in the

Greater Washington region. Not only is Greater Washington a leader in
biotechnology and aerospace, but the region leads the research world
in many industries, such as environment, health and systems integration,
and we are one of only a few metro areas in the world to have such
diverse capabilities.
Sincerely,

John M. Derrick, Jr.

OVERVIEW

T
he Greater Washington Research and Development Facilities Directory provides a database of firms
that conduct physical research in the Washington, DC region – a document compiled and
researched by the Greater Washington Initiative (GWI), an economic development marketing
organization. This directory includes facilities and their programs in private, academic, government and
independent research sectors. These facilities conduct physical research in a broad list of areas – from
aerospace to transportation. These combined criteria make this document a first for the region, under-
scoring the wide variety of research activities in Greater Washington.

This document is not comprehensive and includes participating firms only. Participating firms submitted
information via a survey instrument from GWI (see Methodology on page 4.) GWI mailed the survey to
1,600 potential firms and followed up with two rounds of phone calls to solicit participation. This directory
is a useful tool to help companies locate potential partners and serves as a business resource for many
organizations. We hope that by publishing this document, facilities currently unlisted will provide
information to GWI to be listed and analyzed. This online document will be updated on a quarterly basis.

Industry Sectors

Industry Sectors
The Greater Washington Research and
Development Facilities Directory includes
127 research and development firms. Of the
directory’s facilities, 61% (77) are in the private
sector, 18 are classified as independent
research institutes and the remaining 32 are
government or academic institutions (16 each).

Employment / Internships
These 127 firms employ an impressive 81,151 people – that’s about half the size of Greater Washington’s
employment in the finance, insurance and real estate industry. Twenty-five percent of these employees
have advanced degrees: 9,715 employees at these firms have masters degrees and an additional
10,478 hold doctoral degrees. In addition, the firms listed host 4,818 interns or co-op students.

–1–
Occupational Background
The occupational background of facility employees ranges from test pilots to librarians to administrators,
but science-related backgrounds are most prevalent. The survey prompted responses for major science-
related backgrounds. Of these prompted options, engineering is present at 49% of all firms, followed by
life sciences (43%), physical sciences (41%) and computer/mathematics (40%).

Student Recruiting
When asked the question, “From what academic institutions do you typically hire student interns or
researchers?” the region’s research firms cited 37 different educational institutions. Six institutions account
for 60% of these academic mentions: The University of Maryland College Park (UMD), Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), Georgetown University, George Mason University, The George
Washington University and Johns Hopkins University. UMD College Park is noted most often (23%).

Research Activities
Research activities at the listed firms vary from basic research to product testing and certification. The
type of research most often conducted (59% of firms) is applied research and development. Fifty-eight
percent conduct collaborative research – multiple organizations working together on the same project –
while 57% have in-house research and development operations. The graph below provides a breakout
of the major types of research conducted by directory facilities.

Research Activites

–2–
Fields of Research
Biotechnology is most prevalent in the facilities listed; 35% of all firms listed work in this area. Thirty percent
of firms conduct health-related research, 27% conduct environmental research and 24% work in the
fields of aerospace, pharmaceuticals, computers/information technology and systems integration.

Type and Availability of Lab Space
Total lab space reported by the regional firms amounts to approximately 7.3 million square feet. Fifteen of
these facilities control 37% (2.7 million) square feet of lab space and indicate that leasing opportunities
are available to outside research and development groups. The type of lab space in Greater Washington
ranges from “wet labs” to “clean rooms” to “computer labs”.

Future Growth Factors

Finally, the directory looks at future growth factors for research and development facilities. When asked
“What do you see as the three primary requirements for future growth in your field of research?”, 26% of
responding facilities list “funding” as a requirement for future growth. This figure is nearly three times higher
than “workforce/education” (9%). “Awareness” and “partnerships” were cited by 6% of these firms and
“market development/marketing” round out the top five growth factors with 3%.

METHODOLOGY

G
WI compiled this directory by first creating a list of potential participants to survey. The sources
included: D&B MarketPlace, Master Government List of Federally Funded Research and
Development Centers, Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer General Point of
Contact List, St. Mary’s County Technology Handbook and Maryland Department of Business and
Economic Development. These lists formed a master mailing list for an initial mailing of the survey
instrument, which was followed by two rounds of phone calls to solicit participation. Approximately 1,600
potential firms were contacted and asked to participate in the survey; a number of listings were later
determined to be duplicates or ineligible non-research facilities.

The survey instrument was developed by GWI with assistance from the research department of the Fairfax
County Economic Development Authority. The instrument was intended to collect information to represent
the broad research abilities of local firms and provide information for analysis.

Prior to publishing, the information provided for the directory was sent to each participant to confirm
and review for accuracy. All analysis in this document is based on information provided by the
participating facilities.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

T
hank you to the investors of the Greater Washington Initiative for their generous support that makes
GWI’s work possible. Special thanks to Lisa Tate from the Fairfax County Economic Development
Authority for assistance in the creation of the survey instrument and in methodology development.
Thanks to Will Baber from the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development for providing
special assistance with facility list development. Thanks also to GWI staff Bill Webb, Julie Jackson and
numerous interns who worked so hard to produce this report.
