3ri8in# Training of personnel% both technical and commercial% is very essential for the successful operation of any industry. )ith the birth and gro'th of Indian *erchant *arine% gradually emerged '.4. !EFF,7 N$'.4. 7"J,N!7", +irectorate of *arine ,ngineering (+*,T"% -al !ahadur Shastri .autical and ,ngineering College and other institutions for training navigating officers% marine engineers and seamen. There 'as% ho'ever% no organised attempt in our country to train personnel for the commercial operations of shipping. /ersons see$ing professional 0ualifications in shipbro$ing used to appear for e(aminations conducted annually by foreign institutions. Thus there 'as a dire need for an Indian Institution for training of personnel on commercial aspects and management of shipping particularly in the 'a$e of e(pansion of Indian *erchant *arine and Shipping activities in our country. The .ational Shipping !oard 'hich is a high level advisory body set up under the *erchant Shipping Act% 1234 recommended to the 5overnment of India for the establishment of an autonomous institution for training personnel and conducting e(aminations on the commercial aspects of shipping and for helping the shipping industry by underta$ing necessary research into various problems facing the industry. The 5overnment accepted this recommendation. /recisely to fill up this need% an Institute of Shipping named after late Shri .arottam *orar6ee in recognition of his great pioneering contributions to Indian shipping 'as established on 3 rd 7anuary% 1282 under the 6oint auspices of the 5overnment of India and the Indian Shipping Industry. The Institute is registered under the Societies 9egistration Act as 'ell as under the !ombay /ublic Trust Act. 3b<e/ti.es# The main ob6ectives and purposes of the Institute are: (a" (b" To encourage% promote and assist the study of shipping business in all aspects. To initiate% foster and maintain investigation and research into the best means and methods% practices of conducting shipping business% the problems involved and their most satisfactory solutions and in particular to study the economics of operation in the various international trade routes and India;s share in the different trades. To e(tend% increase and disseminate $no'ledge and e(change information and ideas in regard to all 0uestions connected 'ith shipping and to assist and further in all practicable 'ays the development and improvements of shipping industry in the national interest. To create and provide facilities for education in commercial% technical and other aspects of shipping business and all other allied sub6ects and to ta$e all steps for spread of shipping $no'ledge and to find and support establishments for this purpose. To devise and impose means for testing the 0ualifications of candidates for admission to membership of the Institute by e(amination or by any other actual or practical tests and to grant certificates of 0ualifications<diploma to successful candidates. To e(ercise professional supervision over the members of the Institute and other members of the profession and to frame and establish rules for observance in matters pertaining to professional practices. To hold conferences% meetings% seminars% refresher courses for discussion of shipping business in all its phases and for delivery of lectures and to collect% collate and publish information of service<interest to members of the profession. To establish<develop relations 'ith shipping organisations in other countries and in international shipping organisations and to see$ affiliations 'ith other educational<social organisations in shipping.

The Institute conducts various part time courses of studies leading to the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement = >irst ?ear and >inal ?ear% Associateship and >ello'ship covering practically all important aspects of commercial shipping.

,li8ibility# Admission to the Studentship for the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement = >irst ?ear% is open to all those 'ho are not less than @ years in age having a degree in Arts% Commerce% Science% -a' or in any other faculty. Ao'ever% admission for the course leading to the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement = >inal ?ear% 'ill be restricted only to those 'ho have passed the Institute;s e(amination for the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement = >irst ?ear. Admission to the Brdinary *embership of the Institute is open to all those 'ho are not less than @ years in age having the minimum 0ualification of Aigher Secondary School Certificate e(amination or its e0uivalent rendering him eligible for admission to a college and necessarily possessing before the commencement of the e(amination at least e(perience of three years engaged in any shipping or associated industry% 5overnment +epartment connected 'ith shipping% Customs% /ort Administration or any other organisations closely related to shipping business. Such persons are entitled to the category of Brdinary *embership of the Institute on payment of prescribed fees. Brdinary *embers can ta$e the Associateship ,(aminations of the Institute. After passing the e(amination% they are eligible to become Associate *embers but such eligible persons 'ill have to get themselves elected as Associates of this Institute after paying the prescribed fees before they are allo'ed to ta$e up the >ello'ship ,(amination. Admission to the >ello'ship ,(amination is open only to those 'ho have passed the Associateship ,(amination. Successful candidates in the >ello'ship ,(amination are re0uired to satisfy the 5overning Council of the Institute that they are not less than @@ years in age% that they possess e(perience of not less than C years in shipping and that they have paid the prescribed fees% before they are elected<admitted as >ello' *embers of the Institute. )hile the persons allo'ed to ta$e up Associateship and >ello'ship ,(aminations are admitted to the *embership of this Institute 'ith attendant rights and obligations% the persons 6oining for the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement courses are admitted to the Studentship of the Institute 'ith no such rights and obligations and after obtaining the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement% the students concerned can leave the Institute. Those 'ho have passed the >inal ?ear /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement ,(aminations 'ill% ho'ever% be eligible to enroll themselves as >ello' *embers of the Institute provided they possess the prescribed minimum age and e(perience in shipping as applicable to >ello's of the Institute. The !i:loma in 4hi::in8 used to be a'arded by the Institute from the very beginning 'as restricted to Dniversity 5raduates. The Institute *anagement later re&titled this !i:loma as !i:loma in 4hi::in8 Mana8ement 'hich has been again re&titled no' as Post 6ra9uate !i:loma in 4hi::in8 Mana8ement. 6ui9an/e 2e/tures# 5uidance lectures for the benefit of those 6oining the classes for the Associateship% >ello'ship and the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement = >irst and >inal ?ears% are delivered at the Institute in *umbai t'ice or thrice on 'or$ing days during evening hours from 7une to 7anuary end every year. Ao'ever these class participants 'ould be engaged on holidays for longer sessions. >or the benefit of correspondence students contact classes 'ould be held at *umbai bet'een 1 .3 a.m. to 3.3 p.m. on t'o consecutive days& usually on a Saturday and Sunday in .ovember and 7anuary every year. 4yllabus# The syllabus for the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement = >irst ?ear ,(amination is the same for the Associateship course and the syllabus for the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement = >inal ?ear ,(amination is the same for the >ello'ship course.

Co.era8e# The courses cover practically all commercial aspects and *anagement of Shipping !usiness such as *aritime 5eography% Shipping /ractice% Commercial E Shipping -a'% *aritime ,conomics% Current Shipping ,nvironment% -iner Trade% *ultimodal Transport% Shipping >inance% *arine Insurance% -a' of Sea Transport and Chartering = dry cargo and tan$ers. 4/o:e# The contents of the courses are specially designed and 'ill be of great interest to those 'ho 'ish to ta$e up commercial shipping as a career% also those 'hose e(perience is confined to a specific field of shipping and 'ho 'ish to broaden their understanding of the industry and all ne' entrants to the business of shipping. !istan/e ,9u/ation Pro8ramme# The Institute has been so far conducting personal coaching classes only for the above courses. Since the inception of the Institute in 1282% a large number of persons have 0ualified in the various e(aminations. )ith the introduction of the multi&modal transportation and containerisation% many Inland Container +epots and >reight Stations are being set up. )ith this% the demand of trade and commerce for personnel conversant 'ith shipping has increased. In order to meet the increased demand from up&country candidates the Institute has introduced +istance ,ducation /rogramme by correspondence courses since 1224. Instead of helping the candidates by personal coaching% the distance education programme aims at preparing the up& country candidates for the e(amination by providing them necessary study materials through correspondence courses. Any candidate 'ho 'ishes to ta$e up any of the Institute e(aminations 'ould have to compulsorily attend the coaching classes or undergo the prescribed correspondence courses. Those 'ho are admitted to the classes should have put in at least F3G attendance in the classes for each year before they are allo'ed to ta$e up the annual e(aminations. Those 'ho undergo correspondence courses should have ans'ered at least @<3 rd of the model test papers included in the course of study in order to be eligible for admission to the annual e(aminations. Correspondence courses are available for all the e(aminations presently being held by the Institute. ,)aminations# ,(aminations are normally held in the first fortnight of *arch every year at *umbai% .e' +elhi% Hol$ata% Chennai% Cochin% Vasco&da&5ama% Ahmedabad% 5andhidham% +ubai and any other cities and centres in India or abroad 'herever a minimum of 1 candidates opt to ta$e up the e(amination. ,ach sub6ect for the e(amination carries 1 mar$s and the candidates should secure a minimum of 3 G of the mar$s in each sub6ect for passing the e(aminations. >ailed candidates are e(empted from appearing for e(aminations in those sub6ects in 'hich they could secure 3 per cent or more mar$s in earlier attempts. These e(emptions are valid only for a period of 3 years from the date of their respective e(aminations. .o other e(emptions are given in any sub6ect based on any special 0ualification or e(perience% etc. held by the candidates. 2ibrary# The Institute at *umbai is e0uipped 'ith a -ibrary having useful boo$s% magazines and literature on shipping and allied sub6ects. -ocal members can borro' boo$s from the -ibrary on depositing prescribed amount. 5o1 the nstitute hel:s you# The Institute provides facilities 'hich enable a member or a student to gain professional 0ualification in commercial shipping% hitherto not available in our country. The syllabi of the courses see$ to impart the essential theoritical $no'ledge on commercial shipping 'ith a vie' to helping a member or a student to ta$e up shipping as a career or to improving one;s o'n prospects in that field. *embers interested in the study or specialisation of any aspects of commercial shipping% on their o'n% can utilise the library facilities available at the Institute in *umbai sub6ect to the conditions prescribed therefor. Mana8ement# The management and control of the Institute is vested 'ith a 5overning Council consisting of @C members 'hich include the +irector 5eneral of Shipping% *inistry of Shipping% 5overnment of India% representatives of Dnion *inistries of >inance and ,ducation% .ational Shipping !oard% .ational Aarbour !oard% >ederation of Indian Chambers of Commerce E Industry% Associated Chambers of Commerce E Industry% Indian .ational Shipo'ners; Association% the Shipping Corporation of India -td.% elected representatives of the various categories of members and co&opted members. 6uest Fa/ulty# The guest faculty members of the Institute include e(perienced and 0ualified e(ecutives from shipping companies and allied organisations as 'ell as professors from Dniversities. Special lectures are also delivered by e(perts in relative field. 'imin8s# The Institute Bffice 'or$s bet'een 1 .3 a.m. to 8.3 p.m. every day e(cept on Saturdays% Sundays and !an$ Aolidays. The library timings are the same as office timings. Pri.ile8e o( Members# A member of the Institute is eligible: (a" (b" (c" to obtain gratis publications of the Institute# to the free use of the 9eference -ibrary of the Institute# to vote at meetings of the Institute or on any matter referred to the 5eneral !ody of *embers.

'ermination o( Membershi:# A member shall cease to be a member of the Institute: (a" (b" if he is ad6udged as insolvent# fails to pay subscription 'ithin four months from the due date and if the same is not paid 'ithin one month after the receipt of a 'ritten notice re0uiring the member to ma$e payment of the same# provided that the 5overning Council may% on application made by the person ceasing to be a member under this clause readmit such person on such conditions as they may thin$ fit#

If he is convicted of any offence involving moral turpitude# If he is e(pelled for any act or conduct 'hich% in the opinion of the Institute% is detrimental to its interest provided such e(pulsion is authorised by a resolution passed at a 5eneral *eeting# upon the 5overning Council being satisfied about the death of a member% his<her name shall be removed from the 9egister.

7esi8nation# A member may resign his<her membership of the Institute after giving 3 days 'ritten notice to the +irector. >ees<subscription once paid by a member 'ho resigns shall not be refunded under any circumstances. 6eneral n(ormation# 1. A list of recommended readings for the various e(aminations is furnished in the follo'ing pages for the guidance of the members<students. The list is not e(haustive and the candidates are e(pected to refer further literature<boo$s<6ournals etc. on respective sub6ects covered by the syllabi. Copies of the 0uestion papers of the previous e(aminations held by the Institute can be obtained on payment of 9s.@3<& per set of each year;s e(amination. The Institute reserves to itself every right to amend the syllabi for the various e(aminations or any other rules and regulations governing its activities at any time. The Institute reserves the right to re6ect the application of any person for admission 'ithout assigning any reasons. /ersons admitted to the Studentship of the Institute for the /ost 5raduate +iploma in Shipping *anagement course 'ill not have any of the rights en6oyed by the regular members of the Institute. Candidates 'ho pass in a minimum of three sub6ects in the first year e(amination 'ould be allo'ed to $eep terms (ATHT" for the final year courses sub6ect to payment of prescribed ATHT fees. Candidates preparing for the Institute e(aminations are advised to study topic&'ise the syllabi of the sub6ects concerned% referring relevant boo$s% literature and 6ournals. The latest syllabi for all the courses along 'ith lists of recommended boo$s have been given in the follo'ing pages. The Institute does not have any Aostel facilities.
