A Letter From Coach

Dear Students, Thank you for joining us today! The Monarchs team and I are proud to be able to turn the Verizon Wireless Arena into the largest classroom in New Hampshire. You will learn a lot through this workbook today but one of the most important lessons that our team can teach you is teamwork. Our players work together for a common goal each and every time they step out onto the ice and play, not as individuals, but as one cohesive team. Working together with your peers, teammates and eventually coworkers is helpful for success in the future. Each member of this team works to improve his game every day. They have studied the skills of other players, spent countless hours honing their craft and are learning from the instruction of their coaches with the goal of graduating from the American Hockey League and playing in the National Hockey League. As you learn from our team both through the workbook and out on the ice, I hope it teaches you to reach for the stars and believe in yourself. You can accomplish anything you put your mind to and the possibilities are endless. Good luck and thank you for being a part of Monarchs Education Day!

This workbook has been designed to provide students with a resource guide on the Manchester Monarchs hockey program as well as the sport of hockey. It is our sincere hope the students will draw on the resources within the workbook and the provided source materials to expand upon their reflections and responses. The activities were developed to provide crossdisciplinary opportunities for students to write about what they read, solve problems and analyze print and on-line resources. The workbook highlights a students ability to interpret, analyze, compare/contrast, describe, explain, and integrate resource materials. We wish each student the best as they embark on the challenges and tasks outlined in the 2013 Education Day Workbook. Good Luck!

The Monarchs are tough, but that does not mean they do not need to protect their bodies during a game. They wear equipment that was designed specifically to keep them safe and keep them from injuries. The most important part of the Monarchs equipment is their helmet. Not only does this protect them from head injuries, players in the AHL are required to where a visor to protect their eyes and face from sticks, pucks, and skates. This helmet rule in the AHL is a very modern adaptation to the equipment rules in the sport of hockey. The NHL did not institute a requirement on wearing a helmet for players until 1979. And that was only required for every new player entering the league after that date. The last player to not where a helmet was Craig MacTavish in 1997 as he was in the league before the 1979 mandate was passed by the league. This shows the progression toward player safety and the need to protect ourselves from head or facial trauma in any activity where injury is a risk. Always wear a helmet when riding your bike to protect yourself against brain injury. Each year, half a million kids are seriously injured in bicycle-related accidents, and most of those injures could have been prevented if they wore a helmet. Here are some important things to remember when buying a helmet: choose a helmet that has bright colors or fluorescent colors so that you are visible to drivers and other cyclists make sure your helmet is well ventilated and fits correctly your helmet should have a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) or Snell Memorial Foundation sticker; these indicate the helmet meets standards set by at least one of these nonprofit groups that tests helmet safety

Protective Gear
The Human Body & Equipment
The human body is a remarkable and complex structure. An adult has approximately 630 muscles and 206 bones! The Monarchs protect themselves by always wearing equipment to protect every bone in their body including their shoulders, elbows, legs and head. The average time for a Monarchs player to put on their equipment is 3-10 minutes, depending on which player it is. Some players like to put on the equipment that covers their lower body and then wait to put on their upper body equipment, while other players like to put their equipment on all at once. The typical order that the Monarchs put their equipment on is shin pads, socks, skates, pants, shoulder pads, elbow pads, jersey, helmet and then mouth guard.

Analyze the protective gear that the players use in the pictures on these pages. Write a letter to a friend on what equipment their friend needs to wear in order to be safe while playing hockey. Why did the author write this text? Provide evidence to prove your point. How did the illustrations help you analyze the text? Compare and contrast the differences between Andrew Campbell and Martin Jones protective gear. Use critical thinking to explain why Campbell and Jones have to wear different equipment. What is a potential injury if you do not wear a helmet? ____________________________________

Monarchs Statistics
Hockey Abbreviations
GP (Games Played) - The number of games a particular player played in one season. G (Goals) - A point scored when the puck crosses the goal line into the opposing teams goal. A (Assists) - Credited to the player who handles the puck before the goal is made. No more than two assists are counted for each goal. PTS (Points) - Total points, one each for goals and assists. Plus-Minus (+/-) - When a player is on the ice and his team scores an even-strength goal (not when the opponent has a player in the penalty box), he receives a +1. When the other team scores, that player earns a -1 if he was on the ice. The sum total for the season to date is the players plus-minus rating. SOG (Shots on Goal) - The number of times a player shoots the puck on net. A shot on goal is either stopped by the goaltender or scores a goal. PIM (Penalties in Minutes) - The number of penalty minutes a player has served. Forwards (F) - A Forward is a hockey players position on the ice whose responsibility is primarily offensive. Generally, the offensemen try to stay in three different lanes, also known as thirds, of the ice going from goal-to-goal. It is not mandatory however, to stay in a lane. Defensemen (D) - Defense in hockey is a players position with a primary responsibility to prevent the opposing team from scoring goals. Defense players are often referred to as the D. In regular play, there are two defense players and three forwards on the ice along with the goaltender. Goaltender (G) - The goaltender (also known as goalie or netminder) in ice hockey is the player who defends his teams goal by stopping shots of the puck from entering their teams net, thus preventing the opposing team from scoring. The goalie usually plays in or near the area in front of the net called the goal crease (often referred to simply as the crease).

Science of the Ice Surface

What is a Zamboni?
In 1949, Frank J. Zamboni developed a machine that is used to clean snow off of an ice surface. This device, known as a Zamboni, produces a clean, smooth sheet of ice for hockey players and ice skaters to perform on.

How does a Zamboni work?

Behind the rear wheels of the device, hidden from plain sight, is a large device called a conditioner which holds the most important features of the Zamboni. There is one large, sharp blade that is the width of the machine that is used to shave or scrape the top layer of the ice surface off. The shavings that the blade creates are then swept away by an auger which is a horizontal, rotating screw that is located just above the blade. From the center of the horizontal auger, the shavings then spin up a vertical auger. Once the shavings reach the top, they are thrown into the bucket which is the large box on the front of the Zamboni. While the shavings are being picked up by the auger, water is sprayed on the ice from one of two water tanks. One tank sprays water onto the surface to wash the ice and remove any dirt and debris. A rubber squeegee then removes the dirty wash water. For the final step, hot water is pumped onto the ice from the second water tank to soften the ice and fill in the deep cuts in the ice. This water is extremely hot, typically between 140F and 160F. The Verizon Wireless Arena keeps the temperature of the water in the second tank around 150F. The hot water loosens the crystal structure of the old ice that is underneath the layer that was just scraped off. The extremely high temperatures of the new ice will form a more solid bond with the top layer of old ice than cold water would form. The excess water is removed by a large towel that is attached to the back of the machine. The smoother the ice surface, the faster players can skate. The puck also travels faster on a smooth sheet of ice rather than an ice surface with a lot of shavings on it, this is similar to when it snows in the winter. The snow and ice on the sidewalks become more slick than the snow and ice on the grass.

FUN FACTS:

At approximately of a mile per resurfacing, if there are four resurfacings per game, the machines travel an average of three miles during each hockey game. On average, a Zamboni machine travels close to 2,000 miles each year in the course of resurfacing. In 2001, a Zamboni machine was driven from the East Coast of Canada (St. Johns, Newfoundland) across to the West Coast (Victoria, British Columbia). At about nine miles per hour, the journey took approximately four months. The blade on the Zamboni machine is sharp enough to slice through thick stacks of newsprint, weighs 57 pounds and is inch thick. Approximately 3,661 snow cones can be made from the shavings produced by one resurfacing. When the machine resurfaces the ice, it is capable of removing close to 2,500 pounds of compacted snow, while it can leave behind about 1,500 pounds of water.

Explain Frank Zambonis idea of the zamboni. Using context clues, define conditioner from the above information. How does the illustration help you understand the text? Convert the temperatures from above from Fahrenheit to Celcius. (C=F-32 * 5 / 9)

Anti-Bullying
Stick Up for Yourself using our Hockey Stick Method!
In hockey, players use a stick as a tool to move the puck to achieve their goal. When facing a bully, we also need tools to help us get to our goal. Our goal is to protect ourselves, protect our feelings, and feel good about the choices we make.

Remember who you are and what is important. Ask yourself; What type of person am I? What type of person do I want to be?
This can be ignoring the person, walking or running away, asking an adult to help, or calmly but clearly standing up for yourself- but all with non-violence and calm. How to use our Hockey Stick to Stick Up for Ourselves!

What would you do in this situation?
Connor was at recess, when he tried to join the soccer game with the rest of his friends. We dont play with babies! They told him. Connor had no idea what they were talking about, until he went and sat on the swing with Kallie. Kallie is on his afterschool hockey team- so they are good friends and teammates. Kallie tells Connor that when he got hit with a puck last night someone had taken a picture of him crying and texted it to their friends, which is how it got around that he was a baby. Connor felt humiliated, embarrassed, and angry. That puck had really hurt - he had needed a few stiches and he bet anyone would have cried. He wants to get up and punch the kids playing soccer, lets see who cries now! he thinks. Connor is getting really upset now, his face is getting red, he starts walking over to the soccer field. What should he do?

What Is Bullying?
What is bullying?
Teasing, threatening, physically hurting, taunting, damaging property; being mean with words or actions with the intention of being hurtful.

Who are bullies?

Anyone can be a bully. Sometimes a person can be really nice to some people, and then bully others. It is important to watch how you treat EVERYONE in your life. (That includes little brothers and sisters!)

Why does bullying happen?

It is about POWER. Bullies try to take your power by damaging your confidence and self-esteem. People who bully usually do not feel good about themselves and look to feel better by putting others down. Bullies dont know how to find their own power in a healthy way.

Is this Bullying? (the Quiz)

1. A girl in your class has seizures. Now the kids all call her a mean name. You dont call her the name but you still laugh with the rest of the kids. YES, This is bullying NO, this is not. 2. The same girl is in the bathroom and some girls block the door and will not let her out. They push her and tell her to leave school cause no one likes her. YES, This is bullying NO, this is not. 3. A teacher decides to break up your usual group and have you work with different partners in science. YES, This is bullying NO, this is not. 4. You are sitting at a lunch table with your friend and a group of girls tell you to move saying you are not cool enough to sit at this table. YES, This is bullying NO, this is not. 5. Your best friend decides not to play soccer with you at lunch and instead plays kickball with another kid from your class. YES, This is bullying NO, this is not. 6. A boy you know keeps getting mean messages on his Facebook page. The messages make fun of his religion and tell his family to move. YES, This is bullying NO, this is not. 7. On the way home from school, there is a boy that is always getting hurt on the bus. Two kids hold him down and take turns punching him. YES, This is bullying NO, this is not.

How To Eat Healthy & Stay Fit Like The Monarchs

Staying Healthy

5-2-1-0 Healthy NH is a statewide public education campaign to bring awareness to the daily guidelines for nutrition and physical activity. Its message is simple and clear and represents some of the most important steps families can take to prevent childhood obesity.

Fruits and vegetables...more matters! Eat fruits and vegetables at least 5 times a day. Limit 100% fruit juice. Cut screen time to 2 hours or less a day.

Participate in at least 1 hour of physical activity every day!

Restrict soda and sugar-sweetened sports and fruit drinks. Instead, drink water and 3-4 servings a day of skim or 1% milk.
What are some of your favorite fruits and vegetables? Name at least five activities you can do instead of watching TV and playing video games. What are some activities that you can do to get your body moving and speed up your heart rate? When should you choose a glass of water or a glass of milk instead of a can of soda? Why is it important to eat healthy?

Train Like A Monarchs Player

Staying Fit Like A Monarchs Player
To stay in shape for the games, the Monarchs workout about four times a week. During the workouts, the players work on their legs by doing squats, lunges, and running. They work on their upper and lower body by doing pull-ups, push-ups, and sit-ups. Before every game, the Monarchs do a light workout which primarily consists of stretching but it also includes shoulder and leg workouts. The Monarchs do a pregame workout to keep their bodies loose so they do not pull a muscle during the game. The players pay close attention to what they eat and when they eat.

Eating Like A Monarchs Player

Pregame meals include pasta, chicken or beef, and vegetables. Food gives your body energy to play a sport and the right kinds of food give the Monarchs the right amount of energy. Chicken or pasta is a favorite of the team because these foods can be easily digested and give the players energy. Not only is it important what you eat but when you eat it. A pregame meal for the Monarchs is typically around 12:30 p.m. This is a big meal that includes lots of proteins and carbohydrates. Eating a big meal early in the afternoon allows the Monarchs players at least four hours to digest and convert the nutrients into energy for the game. Your typical portion size is about the size of your palm. The portion size for a player depends on not only the size of their palm but also how they feel. The teams athletic trainer suggests a lot of colorful vegetables and protein for the players so they have the right nutrients to perform their best on the ice. The postgame meal is very similar to the pregame meal. This meal typically includes chicken, pasta and vegetables. Following the game, players often eat peanut M&Ms. This snack provides the player with a small portion of protein from the peanuts and simple sugars from the chocolate. The players body craves protein and sugar after exerting so much energy during the game.

Hydrating Like A Monarchs Player

During the games, the Monarchs drink a large amount of POWERADE to keep their bodies hydrated and allow them to have the right amount of electrolytes, potassium and sodium. The more the players sweat during the game, the more potassium and sodium they lose through the sweat. POWERADE helps replenish those key nutritional elements.

To measure your heart rate, place your first two fingers on 15 138 151 158 165 171 178 192 either side of your neck or on your wrist to measure your pulse. Count the number of beats you feel within one minute. Normal resting heart rates range between 40-100 beats per minute. Ideally, you want your resting heart rate to be between 60-90 beats per minute. Above and to the right is a table for what your heart rate should be when you are exercising depending on the level of your activity.

Did you know that exercising can lower your resting heart rate? Consistent physical activity will lead to a lower resting heart rate which is great for your body. A lower resting heart rate means that your heart has to work less to supply your body with enough blood to properly function.

How Important Are Your Muscles?

The muscles in your body are responsible for pumping your blood and delivering oxygen to the rest of your body. For hockey players and other athletes, core strength is very important. Your core muscles are those found in the center of your body. These muscles stabilize your spine and hips. Hockey players need strong abdominal muscles to strengthen and stabilize their core. Having a strong core helps the players skate and shoot, as well as the ability to hit and check players into the boards. A strong core also helps them to absorb hits without being knocked off their skates. The muscles in a hockey players arms, the biceps, triceps and deltoids, help to battle against their opponent, control the puck on their sticks and shoot the puck.

The Monarchs are responsible for coming into each training camp fit and ready for the season. This is without the help of the teams strength trainers. What important lesson can you take from their selfpreparation during each off season? Watch the Monarchs during warm-ups. They do a considerable amount of stretching prior to playing hockey. Why do you think stretching is important for not only the Monarchs, but for you before any physical activity? Test your resting heart rate. Record this number and track it over the next couple of months while maintaining a healthy exercise regimen!

Hockey History in New Hampshire

With its close proximity to Canada and cold winters, it is no surprise that there is a rich hockey tradition in the state of New Hampshire. What many people may not know, however, is that the Granite State was the birth place of hockey in America. On November 17, 1883, students from St. Pauls School in Concord played the first ever organized ice hockey game in America. Along with Manchester and Berlin, Concord became one of the three cities that were vital to the early development of ice hockey in New Hampshire. Each January, Concord is also host to one of the nations largest pond hockey tournaments, the Black Ice Pond Hockey Championships. Twenty years after the first organized game, Hobey Baker came to St. Pauls School. Baker went on to contribute nationally and internationally to the game of hockey. The top NCAA mens ice hockey player is awarded the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for excellence in hockey both on and off the ice. Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations, Hubie McDonough is a native of Manchester and won the small college Hobey Baker Memorial Award while at Saint Anselm College in 1985. After winning the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, McDonough went on to play in the NHL for the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Islanders and the San Jose Sharks. Along with McDonough, eight other players born in New Hampshire have gone on to play in the NHL. Of the nine players that made it to the NHL, Durhams Deron Quint had the longest career playing in 463 games over 10 seasons. Three of the nine players also have ties to the Manchester Monarchs. In addition to McDonoughs current role, he appeared in five games for the Monarchs during the 2001-02 season. Nashua native Jeff Giuliano collected 88 points (30-58=88) and 103 penalty minutes in 273 games with the Monarchs from 2002-08 before being called up to the Los Angeles Kings. Prior to being named the Monarchs Assistant Coach in August 2012, Freddy Meyer recorded 73 points (20-53=73) in 281 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, Phoenix Coyotes and Atlanta Thrashers. Its not only men in New Hampshire who have had success on the rink. Two of the states most decorated hockey players are women. Concords Tara Mounsey and Salems Katie King-Crowley both played on the United States Olympic Team. Mounsey, who was selected to the US National Team while she was still in high school won a Gold Medal at the 1998 Olympics held at Nagano, Japan and won a Silver Medal at the 2002 Olympics held at Salt Lake City, Utah. In both Olympics, she was named to the All-World Team. King-Crowley played for the United State in three Olympics and six World Championships. Like Mounsey, King-Crowley won Gold in 1998 and Silver in 1992. King-Crowley also won a bronze medal in the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy. That year, she was also named the USA Hockey Womens Player of the Year. King-Crowley is currently the womens hockey coach at Boston College. Throughout the years, a number of professional hockey leagues and teams have had a home in New Hampshire. In Berlin, organized hockey began in a Mill League between 1910 and 1920. In 1923, the Berlin Athletic Association was formed and played until 1928. The Berlin Hockey Club became a force from 1928 into the 1930s, and played many of their games at the Boston Arena. The Berlin Maroons were a top New Hampshire hockey team starting in 1937 and won numerous Amateur Athletic Union championships in both New Hampshire and New England, and continued to play up until the 1990s. The Concord Hockey Club became Concords first organized team in 1927. Sacred Heart Catholic parish and the Millville Bruins were the top two teams in the Concord area. Sacred Heart Catholic played at a rink on Pleasant Street which also hosted the US Olympic team when they played games against Sacred Heart and St. Pauls School. The Concord Shamrocks, the Coachmen, the Eastern Olympics and the Budmen were also prominent teams in Concords hockey history. In Manchester, the St. Jean Maple Leafs were founded in the late 1930s and the Manchester Beavers began to play in 1958. The Alpine Club and Tam-O-Shanters both started in 1962, playing outdoors until the JFK Coliseum was built in 1964. The Blackhawks formed in 1966 and played in the New England Hockey League until 1970 when the original Monarchs were founded. Prior to the current Monarchs, the last organized mens ice hockey team to compete in Manchester was the Bush Blues in 1986. The Blues competed for five seasons.

Kings & Monarchs History

The Los Angeles Kings began on February 9, 1966 when Los Angeles Lakers owner Jack Kent Cooke was awarded a hockey club as the National Hockey League was expanding from the original six to 12 teams for the 1967-68 season. A Canadian-native, Cooke wanted to give his new franchise an air of royalty and so the Kings were born. Over the years, several notable players emerged from the Kings roster including Dave Taylor, Marcel Dionne and Charlie Simmer in the late 70s and early 80s whose line was eventually penned the Triple Crown Line. Other key players in the Kings history are goaltender Rogie Vachon, left wing Luc Robitaille and right wing Daryl Evans. The most notable player to don the Kings jersey and who changed the landscape of hockey in southern California is center Wayne Gretzky. On August 9, 1988, the Kings acquired arguably the greatest hockey player of all time when Gretzky came to the organization from the Edmonton Oilers. Not only was Gretsky a huge asset on the ice, but in the southern California community. Tickets were tough to come by, merchandise sales were through the roof, and local ice arenas were rejuvenated as youth hockey participation increased substantially. In 1992, the Kings made their first Stanley Cup appearance with an historic run that fell just shy, losing to the Montreal Canadiens in five games. Despite the loss, hockey fever continued to spread across the state. In the summer of 1995, Philip F. Anschutz and Edward P. Roski, Jr. purchased the Kings out of bankruptcy and the franchise began to rebuild. On April 21, 2006 the Kings hired Dean Lombardi as teams General Manager. Lombardi brought his philosophy of building from within to the organization and all of their hard work paid off with the franchises first Stanley Cup Championship on June 11, 2012. The Kings purchased the Manchester Monarchs on June 14, 2000. Over the next 20 months, the front office set up shop in Manchester and started integrating themselves into the community while the Kings began signing players for the team. Bruce Boudreau, the current Head Coach of the NHLs Anaheim Ducks, was named the first coach in franchise history and served as the teams bench boss from 200105. The Monarchs first game was played at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Massachusetts, against the Lowell Lock Monsters on October 5, 2001. The team lost their first game, 6-3. The Verizon Wireless Arena, the home of the Monarchs, opened their doors for the first home game in franchise history on November 16, 2001. The Monarchs won the game, 3-1, over the Lock Monsters and defenseman Joe Corvo scored the first goal on home ice in franchise history. The city of Manchester and the state of New Hampshire were put on the hockey map when they hosted the 2005 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic at the Verizon Wireless Arena on February 13-14, 2005. The two-day, sold out All-Star Skills Competition and All-Star Game aired nationally on ESPN and featured future NHL stars like Dustin Brown, Michael Cammalleri, Patrice Bergeron, Ryan Miller, Jason Spezza and Zach Parise. Over the last 12 seasons, the Monarchs have developed numerous players who have gone on to play in the NHL, including 14 players who won the Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2012. Jonathan Bernier, Dustin Brown, Kyle Clifford, Davis Drewiske, Dwight King, Trevor Lewis, Andrei Loktionov, Alec Martinez, Jordan Nolan, Scott Parse, Jonathan Quick, Brad Richardson, Slava Voynov and Kevin Westgarth all spent times in a Monarchs uniform before becoming Stanley Cup Champions with the Kings. Outside the thrilling entertainment on the ice, the Monarchs have been a great part of the New Hampshire community. The Monarchs Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Monarchs, has distributed over $2,000,000 in cash, merchandise and tickets to the community. Several local organizations who have benefited from these donations include the Ace Bailey Childrens Foundation, Boys & Girls Club of Manchester, Catholic Medical Center, Child Health Services, Heritage United Way, New Hampshire Legends of Hockey, Special Olympics of New Hampshire and Toys for Tots. The Monarchs continue to develop hockey stars of the future, provide exciting ice hockey action to their fans and give back to the Manchester community.

What is the biggest challenge the Los Angeles Kings face by having with their development team being located in Manchester, New Hampshire? The Monarchs saw 14 of their former players win the Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2012. How hard do you think it is for a player in Manchester to get called up to the Kings and play in the NHL? If you worked for the Monarchs and could give back to the community, what type of event would you create and who would benefit from it? Why did you choose this event and cause?

Its All About The Temperature

Forming an ideal hockey ice surface and environment is not as simple as making a tray of ice cubes in a freezer. In fact, freezing a rink correctly takes a lot of work! Creating the perfect hockey ice is like manufacturing the perfect storm - it is about the right ingredients and timing. Crews must use water along with high-tech refrigeration equipment to get the ice just right. It takes between 12,000 and 15,000 gallons of water to form the ice surface inside a hockey rink. The freezing point of water is 32F but the ice needs to be very hard so the temperatures must go even lower when the rink is built. The first layer of the ice that is put down is only about one-sixteenth of an inch thick. White paint is sprayed on to the thin layer of ice. Then the lines, face-off circles, goal creases and logos are painted by hand on top of the white paint. The ice surface is then flooded or sprayed with more water that freezes until the ice measures between seven-eighths of an inch and one-inch thick. The skating surface needs to stay below freezing and ideally no higher than 23F. The building temperature does not have to be freezing but it should be cool and most arenas are about 63F at game time. The indoor humidity, or the moisture in the air, needs to be at about 40 percent. Even one degree can make a big difference in the quality of the ice. Even when the conditions are ideal, the doors must open to let the audience come in for the game. If that change increases the humidity in the arena, a fog can develop over the ice. To control an arenas atmosphere, many arenas use dehumidifiers and coolers to compensate for the heat and humidity that will come in when the arena doors are opened to fans and spectators. The Verizon Wireless Arena uses boilers and chillers to control the atmosphere inside. The boilers are used to dry out the air in the building and chillers are used to cool down the building quickly. By using the boilers and chillers simultaneously, the air stays cool and dry which prevents a fog from forming above the ice surface. Hockey players prefer colder, harder ice. With many skaters on the ice at one time, it is easy for the ice surface to get broken up. For hockey games, the ice surface at the Verizon Wireless Arena is kept at 22F. Ice that is too warm might cause players to lose their balance during a crucial play and ice that is too cold may chip too easily. Hockey players skate on harder ice than figure skaters. The ice for figure skaters is kept around 26F. The warmer temperature produces a softer surface which makes it easier for skaters do their jumps and spins. It is not just the ice that needs to freeze for a hockey game! The ideal temperature for pucks is 14F. Experiments show that a frozen puck will move faster and bounce less on the ice. The Monarchs Equipment Manager Mike Holden keeps the pucks that are used during the game in a freezer in the equipment room. The National Hockey League has created a traditional New Years Day game played on an outdoor rink. The Winter Classic is primarily in cold climates but this season, the NHL has introduced a Stadium Series which will include a game in Los Angeles between the Kings and Anaheim Ducks at Dodger Stadium.

How will the ice crew control the temperature of the ice surface at Dodger Stadium when they cannot control the atmosphere inside the stadium? Is it more challenging to control the temperature of the ice surface in Arizona or Alaska? Write a letter to your friend and explain to him or her how the ice surface of a hockey rink is created. In conjunction with the Zamboni information on page six, how does the hot water the Zamboni pours onto the ice to clean it, help keep the ice frozen and ready for the next period?

Outdoor Games
From its beginnings, the game of hockey Nov. 22, 2003 - Montreal 4, EDMONTON 3, 57,167 fans, 16 F has been an outdoor sport, but it was not Jan. 1, 2008 - Pittsburgh 2 (shootout win), BUFFALO 1, 71,217 fans, 36 F until recently that the NHL began playing Jan. 1, 2009 - Detroit 6, CHICAGO 4, 40,818 fans, 32 F some games outdoors. On January 25, Jan. 1, 2010 - BOSTON 2 (overtime win), Philadelphia 1, 38,112 fans, 37 F 2014, the NHL will take playing outside to Jan. 1, 2011 - Washington 3, PITTSBURGH 1, 68,111 fans, 40 F a new level when the Los Angeles Kings Jan. 2, 2012 - NY Rangers 3, PHILADELPHIA 2, 46,967 fans, 41 F face-off against the Anaheim Ducks at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. With the average daily high in Los Angeles in January around 65F, the ice crew will face a different set of challenges than they did on New Years Day in 2010 when the Boston Bruins took on the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park when the temperature at puck drop was 37F. The crew in Los Angeles may have to handle temperatures that could be in the 70s, but they probably will not have to deal with precipitation. History shows that on January 25 in Los Angeles, there is only a 13% chance of rain. Also unlike the weather in Boston in January where there is a 41% chance of snow, record books show that it has only snowed six times in Los Angeles in the month of January.

If you were in charge of the ice crew, would you rather have a game in Boston or Los Angeles? Explain why. Using the fact box above, what is the average attendance and average temperature for NHL Outdoor games? Outdoor games have been played in both baseball and football stadiums, but could be played anywhere. Where would you host an outdoor game and why? Max Explains The Penalties

Penalty Signals
There are four different types of penalties that a player can be given during a game: a two-minute minor penalty, a five-minute major penalty, a 10-minute misconduct penalty or a match penalty in which the player is ejected from the game. The most common type of penalty is the two-minute minor penalty. All of the calls that Max is demonstrating to the right could be called as twominute minor penalties. A five-minute major penalty is most commonly called when players on opposing teams drop the gloves and fight.

Name all of the penalties that you see in the first period! Which penalty was called the most during the game? If you created a penalty in the game, what would it be and why? If you look behind each net, there is an area that is sectioned off into the shape of a trapezoid. That is the area that is designated for the goaltender to play the puck. If he plays the puck outside of the trapezoid behind the goal line, he is called for a two-minute delay of the game penalty! If you were designing the area for the goaltender to play the puck, what shape would it be? What would it look like? Explain your answer and draw a diagram!

Design Your Own Goalie Mask

History of the Mask
Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jacques Plante is credited with creating and wearing the first full goalie mask when he debuted the mask on November 1, 1959 against the New York Rangers. Prior to Plante, goaltenders served as the last line of defense in the game without any form of protection on their face or head. Plantes goalie mask was made of fiberglass and covered his entire face. Nowadays, goaltenders are required to wear helmets that include cages for additional protection. One of the most iconic goaltender masks belonged to former Boston Bruins netminder Gerry Cheevers (pictured to the right).

Many goalies decorate their masks with drawings and pictures of their favorite things while others design them to make them stand out on the ice. Use these templates to design what your goalie mask would look like.
