The Great Romance, by The Inhabitant

Introduction
Volumes I and II of The Great Romance, two novelettes 55 pages and 39 pages in length respectively, were published separately under the pseudonym of The Inhabitant in !! in "shburton #or possibly $unedin%, &ew 'ealand, and are worthy of attention for their position in the history of utopias and science(fiction #)*%+ Volume I is interesting as it appears to be the principal source for the frame story of ,dward -ellamy.s # !5/( !9!% influential "merican novel 0oo1ing -ac1ward 2///( !!3 # !!!%, as well as for his short story 4To 5hom This 6ay 7ome8 # !9!%+2 9et both volumes I and II are also of interest for: #i% providing an instance of how widespread the writing and publishing of )* was in the 9th century, particularly the e;istence in rural &ew 'ealand of a distinct "ntipodean )*<utopian tradition evidenced elsewhere by the li1es of )amuel -utler, =ohn 6acnie, "nthony Trollope and =ules Verne> #ii% demonstrating a cutting(edge position in the writing of late 9th century )*, with a focus on the future, interplanetary travel, a sympathetic treatment of non( humanoid aliens, technological developments in space travel and non(o;ygen environments> and #iii% as a further e;pression of a late 9th century -ritish 'eitgeist with an emphasis on progress, morality and race+

0oo1ing -ac1ward recounted the tale of a wealthy -ostonian named =ulian 5est, who having fallen asleep in the year !!3, awa1ened in the year 2/// to see a wonderfully advanced society which had resolved all the problems plaguing the industrialising 9th century world+ The divisions of the old -oston, namely poverty, unemployment, labour(capital conflict, corruption, class barriers, and ine?uality of wealth, had all been resolved in the new society as a conse?uence of the nationalisation of the economy by the state, which in turn had allowed for the complete social and political e?uality of all citi@ens regardless of se;+ "s a result of the novel.s readable prose #a practical problem facing many late 9th century utopianist<)* wor1s%, as well as -ellamy.s sincere and logical vision of a potential socialist utopian future, 0oo1ing -ac1ward ?uic1ly became an international best(seller and went on to establish -ellamy Aas one of the Bnited )tates. most widely read and ideologically influential writers. #-owman ;i;(;;%+ ,verett *+ -leiler in his history of early )cience(*iction says

D that 0oo1ing -ac1ward may well be Athe most international "merican boo1 since the wor1 of ,dgar "llan Eoe and =ames *enimore 7ooper. #;;i%+ -ellamy.s ideas went on to affect in varying degrees the *abians of -ritain, Russian Revolutionaries in 9 3, 'ionist leaders in ,urope and Ealestine, labour leaders throughout the -ritish settlement colonies, and Theosophists the world over+ Fis ideas also influenced such writers and thin1ers as 7harles -eard, =ohn $ewey, "nton 7he1hov, ,ugene V+ $ebs, "natole *rance, 6a;im Gor1y, George -ernard )haw, 0eo Tolstoy, Thorstein Veblen, ,dward 5ee1s, and F+G+ 5ells+ The vogue for )* and utopianism which resulted from -ellamy.s novel was even Asuch that Gilbert and )ullivan+++ thought it worth a whole operetta, Btopia 0td+ #first performed in !93%. #"mis 3!%+ &or was &ew 'ealand itself immune to the popularity of -ellamy.s message+ 5illiam Eember Reeves, later 0iberal 6inister of 0abour from !92( !9G, celebrated the novel in !!9 on account of the fact that -ellamy had Amastered, and digested the creed of )ocialism+++ without being dull+++. #Roth 23 %+ "lthough there is no evidence to show the number of people who read -ellamy in &ew 'ealand, one year after Reeves. comment local newspapers in "uc1land, 7hristchurch and $unedin were announcing that they were ?uic1ly selling out of copies of the popular boo1+ "ccording to one correspondent from the &ew 'ealand Tablet: H*or some wee1s past the first ?uery on the lips of every second person whom one met in the street or elsewhere was 4Fave you read 0oo1ing -ac1wardI8 #Roth 232%+ ,ven as late as the 9G/s the former &ew 'ealand Erime 6inister 5alter &ash said that he regarded -ellamy as Aprobably one of the greatest, if not the greatest, prophets of the development of world conditions. #-owman ;;%+ The relationship between -ellamy and &ew 'ealand, however, may not necessarily be only one way+ It now appears highly li1ely that the &ew 'ealand novelette The Great Romance is the principle source for the frame story of 0oo1ing -ac1ward+ This conclusion appears all the more certain when The Great Romance is compared to -ellamy.s !9! short story 4To 5hom This 6ay 7ome8, on which its influence is pervasive+ In both The Great Romance #GR% and 0oo1ing -ac1ward #0-% the narrator #=ohn -renton Fope 3 and =ulian 5est respectively%, awa1es after a long sleep ( 93 years for Fope, 3 years for 5est+D 5hen Fope awa1ens he sees a strange man staring at him who appears to be a Amesmerist.+ 5est in 0- was put to sleep by a mesmerist+ -oth protagonists after wa1ing in their respective futures also fall in love with women named ,dith+ In GR she is the sister, in 0- the daughter, of the man present at their awa1ening+ *urthermore each ,dith is a descendant of a friend of the narrator from his previous time: ,dith 0eete is the great grand(daughter of 5est.s 9th century fiancJe ,dith -artlett, while ,dith 5eir is descended from Ktare 2, no+ 2 # 999%, pp+ 3C 3+

5 =ohn 6alcolm 5eir, Fope.s closest friend+ "nd in both wor1s these women function not only as romantic love interests to help enhance the plot, but also serve a more practical role by acting as guides for the protagonist #and reader% in these future worlds+ 5here the two wor1s differ is in intent+ The author of GR appears primarily concerned with producing an entertaining and romantic story, and even ?uite possibly a promotional piece aimed at attracting settlers to &ew 'ealand+ The flight into the un1nown reads li1e a fevered dream or prophetic vision, the author indicating a passionate thirst for 1nowledge and new e;periences, an innatus cognitionis amor, li1e $ante.s Blysses: Awe wandered and searched, li1e children on a holiday, ever eager to see, to 1now, and to discover+++. Earts of Volumes I and II can even be li1ened to a -oy.s Kwn or an "merican dime novel with an emphasis on technological wi@ardry, Fope.s adventures on Venus, and his companions. dangerous return Lourney amongst the stars+ -y contrast -ellamy.s prime concern is to stress the need for a type of socialist transformation that would end Athe old laisse@ faire capitalist order. #0ipow 23%+ 0- is therefore more concerned with a concrete and practical reality+ Its utopia is firmly grounded upon the earth and appears achievable> it is not simply an adventurous dream as in GR, the focus of which soon leaves the planet altogether+ This divergence in intent raises another difference between the two wor1s, namely the means by which these utopias come about+ 5hereas the Inhabitant attributes the rise of utopia to the advent of telepathy, -ellamy envisions it as the result of nationalism wherein the old predatory capitalist monopolies have been peacefully and gradually absorbed into one central governmental monopoly which operates in the interests of all+ Telepathy, therefore, plays no part in 0-.s cooperative -oston of "$ 2///+ -ellamy did, nevertheless, credit the rise of a utopian society to telepathy in 4To 5hom This 6ay 7ome8, published in !9!+ In this short story the shipwrec1ed narrator is rescued by the telepathic inhabitants of a group of )outh )ea islands cut off from the rest of the world by savage currents+ Fere, as in GR, the fact that one.s every thought is public, so that wic1ed intentions cannot be concealed, has resulted in all having only honourable thoughts, or #in GR% in the isolation of those who have socially undesirable motives+ "nd here again the narrator finds both a friendly guide to educate him in the ways of this telepathic society as well as the love of a beautiful woman+ In the history of )* The Great Romance appears to form an important bridge between -ellamy.s 4To 5hom this 6ay 7ome8 and another noteworthy and influential )* wor1 of the late nineteenth century, namely The 7oming Race, Ktare 2, no+ 2 # 999%, pp+ 3C 3+

G which was written in !3 by the -ritish novelist, dramatist, politician and statesman ,dward -ulwer(0ytton+ That the writing of GR was influenced by -ulwer(0ytton is suggested by the following: #i% the inhabitants of -ulwer( 0ytton.s utopia #which is located in the centre of the earth% are winged people #despite their otherwise human appearance%, as are the non(humanoid alien HVenuses. which Fope meets in volume II> and #ii% the scene in which 6o;ton uses Hmagnetism. to control the movements of a stic1 is reminiscent of the rod used in The 7oming Race to control the power of vril #an energy which permits the transfer of thought and mind(control%+ )usan )tone(-lac1burn, who discusses the treatment of psi powers in The 7oming Race, calls -ellamy.s short story +++ a trailbla@er in its e;ploration of effects telepathy might have on society, and in its suggestion that under special conditions evolution might distil ancient and genuine but sporadic and unreliable human psi abilities into universal and reliable ones+ #2D3% 5 It should now be evident that the trail was bla@ed not by -ellamy in !!! but by The Inhabitant in !! + It was not long after this that psi powers developed into a staple of modern )*: AThe notion that new mental powers would be developed in the course of man.s future evolution became commonplace in the early 2/th century. #Eringle 35%+ -ellamy scholars #including his biographer "rthur ,+ 6organ%, have suggested that -ellamy may have borrowed some of his ideas for 0- from =ohn 6acnie, a )cottish(born "merican educator and Erofessor of *rench and German who in !!3, after GR and before 0-, published a dystopian novel entitled The $iothas+ "ccording to 6organ in both The $iothas and 0-: +++the device of hypnotism was used+++ MandN the hero had a sweetheart named ,dith+ Kn awa1ing from the long sleep in each case the hero fell in love with a distant descendant of A,dith.+ In each case too, the father or guardian of the heroine, a man of e;ceptional intelligence and culture, became interpreter of the new world to the hero who had emerged from the nineteenth century+ ,ach of the wor1s forecasts radio, television, automobiles, and other technical developmentsO #2D %+ -leiler, in discussing the merits of such a possible connection, does point out that both 6acnie and -ellamy were in correspondence with one another before their wor1s were published #335%+ The possibility that 6acnie himself was Ktare 2, no+ 2 # 999%, pp+ 3C 3+

3 influenced by GR cannot be e;cluded at this point+ 7ertainly he was familiar with &ew 'ealand for he devoted a great deal of space to the material progress which the "ntipodes were supposed to have made over the course of centuries and refers to &ew 'ealand #which he terms A6aoria.% many times+ In fact the protagonist of The $iothas from the future ( Ismar Thiusen ( is identified by 6acnie as originating in the &orth Island of the country #5!%+The ?uestion now arises how -ellamy #if he did not borrow the plot of GR via The $iothas% came across The Inhabitant.s novelette, for he never visited &ew 'ealand+ It is possible that someone visiting &ew 'ealand brought bac1 a copy to the Bnited )tates, a copy that eventually made its way into -ellamy.s hands+ It is even possible that the publisher sent copies of the boo1 to "merican publishers for possible reprinting or distribution+

In addition to its probable influence #either directly or indirectly by way of 6acnie% on -ellamy, GR is unusual among )* wor1s of the time in being primarily science(fictional, in other words ta1ing the real world and technological innovation #as opposed to fantasy% at its starting point, rather in the mode of an earlier and more famous )* author, =ules Verne+ -leiler designates such a position as being ?uasi(scientific as opposed to pseudo(scientific Awhich suggests falsity. #;i%+ GR is also of interest for ostensibly introducing a number of innovative technologically(related firsts for )* which have now become ?uite common to the genre+ The Inhabitant.s attempts at verisimilitude are evident early on in Volume I which begins not in the time of the author and reader, in !! , but in a scientifically(advanced 95/+ The chemical potion that puts Fope into a state of suspended animation, which he enters in order to e;perience for himself the future, has been concocted by A=ohn 6alcolm 5eir, the greatest chemist of the day+. In addition, the Fope of 95/ is himself a renowned scientist whose concepts have been, at least in part, responsible for the technological developments that have led to the world of 2 D3: A9ou first started the mechanical world on this new trac1+ 9ou found out the power which so swiftly drives us through the air and over the earth+++. The Great Romance is also interesting for its depiction of space travel+ 5hile a number of space(travel stories were published earlier, there was perhaps only one, Eercy Greg.s "cross the 'odiac # !!/%, which provided so detailed and e;tensive an account of the difficulties involved+ Ktherwise many of these earlier wor1s Atended to turn a blind eye to the problems involved in moving outside the ,arth.s atmosphere. #Eringle 5/%+ -y contrast the Inhabitant.s vision Ktare 2, no+ 2 # 999%, pp+ 3C 3+

! of the shape of things to come, both on his Lourney to Venus and during his friends. return, includes: accounts of the absence of gravity on a spaceship and the need for e;ercise to prevent muscle fatigue> the problem of meteor damage to a ship #avoided by the spaceship )tar 7limber having a defensive cannon powerful enough to destroy a moon P la $eathstar%> possible regions in space, passage through which would disable a spaceship> the need for a cooling device on board to prevent damage from the e;treme heat generated by a planet.s atmosphere during ta1e(off and re(entry> the apparent use of a planet.s or comet.s rotation and<or atmosphere to increase #in a sling(shot li1e effect% or decrease a space vessel.s speed> initial landings in a planet.s ocean #reminiscent of "merican manned capsules returning to the Eacific or "tlantic%> the problems of fresh air and monotony on a long space voyage> the reasons why Venus is chosen over the moon as a destination for the voyage #there is no atmosphere on the moon and apparently one on Venus%> the description of Venus from space Ali1e a moon at three(?uarter.s full., which is stri1ingly reminiscent of today.s television images of the view of ,arth as seen from space> the fact that before a launch can occur a suitable window of opportunity is re?uired: A,arly morning was the time appointed for their leave(ta1ing> then the planet would bring us round to the appointed place+++.> and the depiction of wal1ing in a low(gravity environment that so clearly resembles the frustrations, dangers and humour of the first moon wal1s: A$on.t fool about 5eir+ I believe a good Lump would send one clear altogether.+ "s far as the primary propulsion system of the )tar 7limber is concerned, it is not driven by anti(gravity or any such similar power common to late( nineteenth(century space flight #for e;ample Aapergy. in Greg.s "cross the 'odiac%, but while in the atmosphere of a planet it uses metallic wings that, li1e those of a hummingbird, flap so rapidly that they cannot be seen at full speed+ This pictures?ue but improbable image aside, the )tar 7limber can also achieve alternative velocity in space or during ta1e(off by a variant of the more conventional means of roc1et(propulsion: 6o;ton determined to poise the )tar 7limber in the air, 1eeping her steady and motionless with her lesser vibratory motion, till, li1e a rifle or telescope, she was accurately sighted, then discharge, as we had done in the 6agellan could, our rearward artillery ( this would give her a swift and true start+ #Volume II% )uch a method of ta1e(off as described from the planet Venus, loo1ing Ali1e a falling tower across the firmament. and leaving a Afearful deafening roar., is very Ktare 2, no+ 2 # 999%, pp+ 3C 3+

9 much a1in to late twentieth century images and after(effects of modern "merican, )oviet or ,uropean roc1et launches+ "nother technological innovation of interest found in volume II includes the use of a spacesuit which is worn by Fope.s companions to e;plore a passing comet: Athey prepared their air(pipe supplies ( something li1e a bagpipe in appearance> they could breathe in the air through a mouthpiece+++ 5ith these on they could wal1 in a vacuum for an hour or more+. Eart of this spacesuit includes glasses tightly fastened over the face Aso that the atmosphere could touch no part of his body+. =ohn =+ Eierce in *oundations of )cience *iction states that the *rench novelists Georges 0e*aure and Fenri de Graffigny who wor1ed collaboratively in the late !!/s and early !9/s were Aapparently the first to thin1 of+++ space suits. #D/%+It now seems clear that this particular necessity of space e;ploration first ma1es its appearance in GR and as early as !! + Kther apparent technical firsts for GR include the e?uivalent of a 1ind of shuttle(craft or lunar rover in volume II which is used by Fope to e;plore the planet Venus> he calls it Athe 6idge. and it is described simply as a 1ind of fantastic Aboat. that can Arun, or fly, or swim.+ The author of GR also appears acutely aware of the need to maintain an air(tight environment during space travel, and conse?uently volume II includes, ?uite possibly for the first time in the history of )*, the use of an airloc1 as we 1now it today+ )uch a device first ma1es its appearance with Fope.s friends during their reconnoitre of a passing comet: AThe sliding doors were shot bac1 and closed again behind them, then 5eir opened the outer one and stepped out+. The Great Romance may also be the first story in which a person travels into the future via induced suspended animation rather than simply by sleep> none earlier is mentioned by -leiler in his history of the early years of )*+G It would later be left to F+G+ 5ells to develop what is today probably the most well 1nown means of intentional travel into the future #or even the past for that matter%, the time machine+ Kther aspects of GR worth mentioning, which if not uni?ue to nineteenth century )*<utopianism are interesting in their own right, include the future relationship between the se;es and the physical description of the new cities+ The society described in GR is a free(love society+ 5hereas se;uality in any physical sense never influences the behaviour of 5est and ,dith 0eete in 0-, it does play a part in the relationship between Fope and ,dith 5eir: AIt was with us, then, li1e $anty.s MsicN lovers, when they ceased to read of the loves of 0auncelot and the Queen+. 5hen Fope is about to embar1 for Venus he wonders whether ,dith will follow him, an issue which constantly dominates Fope.s thoughts during his Robinson 7rusoe(li1e period of isolation in volume II+ " further li1eness between GR and 0-Ralthough one common to utopian Ktare 2, no+ 2 # 999%, pp+ 3C 3+

/ tales of the future beginning as early as Thomas 6oore, and probably reflecting contemporary preoccupations over fin de siScle urban reform rather than further similarities between GR and 0-Ris that for both The Inhabitant and -ellamy the future assumes millennium(li1e dimensions of a Golden "ge+ The cities of the future are depicted in both wor1s as the apotheosis of an urban planner.s dream+ 5hen Fope is shown the urban landscape of the 22nd century for the first time, he sees Aan immense city+ The streets were as thic1ly peopled as the old 0ondon streets, but they were four times their width, and planted with trees along either side+. 5est.s description of -oston in the year 2/// is similar: A"t my feet lay a great city+ 6iles of broad streets shaded by trees and lined with fine buildings+++ stretched in every direction+. Eossibly one of the more interesting developments in GR relating to the genre of )* as a whole, aside from the technological innovations already mentioned and the novel.s potential influence upon 6acnie and<or -ellamy, is its treatment of the alien AVenuses.+ Bnli1e many later )* wor1s of the post(5ar of the 5orlds 1ind, the two Venuses which Fope encounters #one male and a smaller female% are not menacing bug(eyed monsters #-,6s%+ Instead they are given some basic character development and attempts are made at apparently realistic ;enobiological characterisation+ 5hen the two races first meet there are some introductory problems of communication as the aliens do not spea1 ,nglish and hand gestures are re?uired to initiate a greeting+ *irst contact description between the races also appears particularly credible+ The smaller female shrin1s bac1 with fear as Fope first approaches> there is a rather moving description of Fope and the male alien initiating physical touch> and there later occurs an e;change of gifts and hospitality between the two species after some confidence is established between them+ The alien couple also appear to have a belief system, evidenced by the fact that while later agreeing to act as Fope.s guides, before doing so they enact a 1ind of Asolemn covenant. which Fope presumes to be an oath of secrecy: Awherever your native home may be I will always hold it as a sacred thing+. " believable e;ploration procedure is also evidenced by the fact that Fope.s companions, before they begin their return Lourney home, Acollected fruits, flowers, and the smaller animals, to be ta1en bac1+. )uch an accumulation strategy resembles =ames 7oo1.s e;ploration in the )outh Eacific or even more modern inter(planetary e;peditions to the moon or 6ars+ GR is not by any means the first wor1 to develop the concept of life originating away from ,arth+ "s early as the 2nd century "$+, the Gree1 author 0ucian of )amosata was peopling the moon and other heavenly bodies with strange races+ 6ost of his creatures, however, fitted Amore into supernatural Ktare 2, no+ 2 # 999%, pp+ 3C 3+

fiction than ancestral science(fiction. #-leiler D55% and were intended for satiric purposes li1e )wift.s creations in Gulliver.s Travels+-y comparison, those later )* authors who did develop a concept of intelligent alien beings such as the A6artials. in "cross the 'odiac, tended instead to restrict their descriptions to a type of humanoid: ABntil The 5ar of the 5orlds, interplanetary fiction had typically peopled other worlds with beings little different from ourselves. #Eierce, *oundations%+ The 6artials in Greg.s story, for e;ample, are essentially Lust shorter and wea1er human beings+ "ccording to Eierce, it was for plot reasons having to do either with a need to develop a human(alien romantic interest #,dgar Rice -urroughs% or a malevolent -,6 threat #F+G+ 5ells%, that Afor the most part, the story of aliens in science fiction before 93D is one of missed opportunities. #Eierce, Great Themes 2%+ The Venuses in volume II of GR, however, are a visibly physically and psychologically distinct species from homo sapiens: +++there before me in the uncertain distance, some thing with two colourless insect(li1e wings stood up+++ )trange beingsT how shall I describe themI with no li1eness to humanity e;cept that they stood on two legs> with arms, yet not arms> faces human, yet how unli1e+++with soft eyes+++ their fine bodies covered with a down ( neither of bird nor animal ( soft and dar1, and their heavy, lithe limbs, such as might have developed from that earliest of prehistoric elephant+++ "lthough at times GR may read li1e a safari adventure with its descriptions of various Ahuge lion(li1e animals., Atigers., and strange landscapes, the planet Venus and its creatures appears to represent a more believable alien(world creation+ 5hat is more the author at times seems sympathetic to the aliens #who often become parabolically displaced by )* authors in time and space with native peoples%+ "s early as volume I, and before contact has been made, Fope concludes that if alien life does e;ist on the planet then ,arth colonists will Lust have to find another world to develop: A+++we must see1 another planet ( for over earth.s over(crowded happiness++. )imilarly the Venuses are described as having a degree of mental ability: AThere was intelligence, 1nowledge, in every line of their features+++. )uch an apparently more enlightened late(nineteenth( century point of view in GR contrasts remar1ably with the actual history of ,uropean coloni@ation of the "mericas and "ustralasia, many of whose indigenous peoples were either displaced or eradicated during the settlement process+ In discussing contact e;periences in )*, =ohn Eierce states that Ktare 2, no+ 2 # 999%, pp+ 3C 3+

2 *lorence 7arpenter $ieudonnJ in her )* wor1 Rondah, or Thirty(Three 9ears in a )tar # !!3%, is Aahead of her time+++in defending the rights of aliens. #*oundations 59%+ )imilarly Uingsley "mis states that sympathetic attitudes to native peoples Mread alien speciesN can only be found to have developed in "merican )* from the middle of the 2/th century onwards #95%+ The empathy for a non(human species in GR appears to put the wor1 ahead of its time in the genre of )* as a whole+ )uch an attitude in !! &ew 'ealand )* may well reflect a 1ind of noble savage mentality that was re(affirming itself in the wa1e of late(nineteenth(century social and environmental concerns, as well as a ,uropean<&ew 'ealand sense of guilt or shame over the realisation that colonisation in many cases had disastrous effects on those coloni@ed+

Conclusion
Initial sympathy for the aliens aside, there are also paternalistic elements towards the Venuses that mirror late(nineteenth(century cultural attitudes of racial superiority towards native peoples+ "lthough in volume I Fope stated that coloni@ation would not proceed should there be life on Venus, that idea is ?uic1ly forgotten by volume II> for even after Fope has befriended the Venuses he has grand plans for the alien world: AThey had come to find a future home for the growing millions of their native earth, and here all around the tropical @one was a region fitted with everything necessary+. The imperialistic<militaristic is also visible by the fact that Fope has his own version of a frontier fort to which he can retreat if attac1ed, his Alittle castle. with its Aformidable+++powers of defence.> he additionally carries around with his person a revolver whenever he travels beyond the confines of his private sanctuary+ There are a number of other acts which Fope underta1es which could be interpreted as e;amples of Victorian cultural superiority+ )oon after contact with the Venuses, for instance, he names them+ 5hat is more he chooses the classical<mythological appellations of Ehilomenia and Fyperion, and in using such classical designations appropriates automatically the legacy of the Greco( Roman heritage and all its intonations of civilised authority+ This was a favourite tactic of late(nineteenth(century empire propagandists: Ain the Erotestant countries+++ classicism as the uniform of civili@ation. #Eieterse 9%+ )uch a naming process is in fact very similar to the way in which Robinson 7rusoe names 6an *riday, although Fope does recognise that Ahe would learn their own names as soon as he could master their most strange speech+. 3 inferior, as evidenced by the description of their little boat as Arude.+ Their apparent se;ual behaviour towards one another from a mid( to late(Victorian perspective could also indicate a relatively uncivilised culture, although at the same time it may represent to the author a 1ind of innocent nobility of which he is envious: Athey seemingly grew ?uite unconscious of any onloo1er, in their soft and lover(li1e play together+. It does not ta1e too long, then, for Fope to try to begin civilising the two Venuses whom he encounters+ Fe shows them the benefits of fire while simultaneously teaching them to coo1 the local Afish.> in the process he comments that they will soon be Aas completely civilised in these respects as the inhabitants of the earth+. The Venuses, therefore, are presented as a 1ind of simplistic and primitive noble savage, and the planet Venus itself as a 1ind of Terra Nullius<Garden of ,den+ The implication appears to be that there is much which humanity could teach these people and that the planet is well(suited to human settlement+ The theme of coloni@ation is itself raised by the apparent promotional and<or reformist nature of GR+ The novelette, apart from its )*<utopian theme, also appears to be an e;ample of a sub(genre of literature designed to either attract emigrants to the supposedly "rcadian lands to be found in the "ntipodes or to advance the benefits of political or social legislation+ The reader has simply to substitute the advanced but overcrowded utopia of ,arth in the 22nd century with that of ,urope in the late !3/s or early !!/s, and then replace the descriptions of the vast and supposedly nearly uninhabited lands of a Venus rich in wildlife and natural resources with either &ew 'ealand or "ustralia, for the booster intent of the publication to become readily apparent+ The author, in fact, has included 1angaroos as one of the e;otic animal species on Venus in volume I+ ,ven the choice of The Inhabitant as nomenclature is important, as the pseudonym was one common at the time to guideboo1s in Great -ritain and the Bnited )tates+ The Great Romance, therefore, in addition to its possible influence on -ellamy and its cutting(edge position in the writing of )*, particularly with regard to the use of telepathy, technological realism, and alien ;enobiology, is also of interest as a 1ind of cultural barometer+ 0i1e much other )* it can be used as an alternative means to analyse popular perceptions from a specific historical period, in the same way that more modern )* sources such as films li1e Invasion of the -ody )natchers or the old television series )tar Tre1 can be used to e;amine the 7old 5ar paranoia of the 95/s or a change in "merican opinion towards the Vietnam 5ar in the late 9G/s+ GR is also of interest from a literary point of view+ "lthough there are obvious holes in the plot #telepathy is relatively important in volume I but appears to be forgotten in volume II%, and Ktare 2, no+ 2 # 999%, pp+ 3C 3+

although at times Fope.s lamentations for ,dith in volume II can appear repetitive at best, the wor1 does read ?uite well as a wor1 of fiction and is not ?uite as dull as a good deal of similar )*< utopian material produced during this period+ The episode regarding Fope.s companions on the comet, particularly 5eir.s fall off the face of the comet, is particularly gripping and is literally a cliff( hanging conclusion to the second volume+ "ll that remains to be done is to perhaps find volume III #if it e;ists at allI% and to continue the search for the identity of the author+
