Job Requisition Number: 006935. The Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS), an
innovative leader in the field of science and mathematics education, is the public
science center on the Berkeley campus; it serves a quarter million visitors a year
and provides programs for schools that serve a quarter million students at LHS and
at their schools annually. The Center for Technology Innovation (CTI) has a dual
function within LHS of developing innovative multimedia solutions that enhance
math and science learning and supporting LHS staff and processes with their
computing and network needs. The Creative Director of CTI will lead the
educational technologies development group at LHS, by providing the vision and
direction for technology use in educational products at LHS and by directly
managing and supervising the production staff. The development group is
responsible for any LHS technology products online, on the museum floor, in
curriculum, and for teacher training programs. The Creative Director will directly
supervisor project managers, production assistants and an art director in order to
carry out intra and inter-departmental projects in LHS. Additionally, the Creative
Director will provide major contributions to the vision and creative direction for the
department and its entire staff as the developer of new projects and project ideas,
as a collaborator and major writer on funding proposals and as the creative lead on
established projects.
Responsibilities
Leadership, Development, and Design - Contribute to Center Leadership - Work
with the CTI Director to develop and support a vision for the center that will go
beyond immediate demands and address future directions. Stimulate and facilitate
the creative drive in center staff across multiple projects. Support connections to
LHS as a whole and demonstrate by communicating a viable model for the
integration of technology in all museum exhibits, curriculum, and teacher
professional development efforts. - Represent the Center and LHS professionally. -
Submit and present work at professional conferences and meetings organized by
potential funders, and national and regional organizations Attend meetings offsite
with potential collaborators. Establish and maintain professional connections within
the science educational field. Be a part of LHS and campus steering committees on
technology and multimedia development. Communicate with LHS staff about the
state of educational technology and lessons learned through research to ensure
staff remains current to major developments in the field. - Create and design new
projects - In conjunction with the CTI Director, develop independent and
collaborative projects that include innovative uses of technology. Play a major role
in conceptualization, design and execution of projects. Conduct brainstorming
sessions with staff to carry out projects and forge new ideas for proposals. Write
and edit grants involving center resources originating from inside or outside LHS.
Understand science concepts and pedagogy being conveyed in projects and
contribute science content to technology pieces when necessary. - Designer - Play a
major creative role in LHS exhibits and curriculum projects involving technology.
Bring multimedia and technology ideas and concepts to reality through experience
and management of CTI staff. Act as a team member in LHS project brainstorming
sessions and contribute to working copy for exhibits and curriculum development.
Investigate software and hardware possibilities to fit the technology needs of LHS
projects in a given budget. Project manager and staff supervision - Liaison to
outside and LHS Project Directors - Represent CTI staff in outside and internal
projects involving technology. Meet with clients to develop scope, design and
schedule of projects. Be familiar with the needs of a wide variety of clients,
including curriculum developers, professional development designers, assessment
designers and researchers, and be able to work within the client?s individual
constraints. Allocate realistic CTI resources based on projections of technology
needs in projects and present departmental staffing levels. - Supervise Project
Managers - Direct multiple CTI projects that utilize a wide variety of technologies.
Supervise CTI project managers by providing key goals and milestones. Work in
conjunction with project managers to create project timelines and budgets.
Establish and run weekly departmental meetings reviewing all CTI projects. Manage
LHS web site by coordinating and working with LHS web producer and staff.
Requirements
This position requires a highly creative person with a science and/or science
education background (Master?s or Ph.D. preferred), who has a strong interest in
the latest technologies and is unafraid to take initiative and lead a diverse
production group to develop cutting edge, research-based educational multimedia
pieces. ?5-10 years experience in educational technology development. ?
Demonstrated ability to lead a production group to bring in a project on time and
within budget. ?Excellent leadership, communication and negotiation skills. ?
Demonstrated presentation and collaboration skills.. ?Demonstrated written skills.
Demonstrated ability to write successful funding proposals. ?Proficient in the latest
technologies and their uses in educational environments, both formal and
informal. ?Self-motivated and highly organized.
