Film Sequence Matrix Cinematography Analysis The short sequence of film that Ive decided is particularly effective when

analysing how it creates meaning and responses from the audience is a scene from the movie, Matrix (1999) of the clip on Trinity escaping the agents which I will use to pay attention to certain aspects of Film studies by analysing that particular scene (Duration: 00:00-3:15) Camera Shots/Movement There are various alterations between shots in each cut. The director uses close-up shots as this showed very little background and concentrated on Trinitys face. Everything else was just a blur in the background as the shot clearly displays Trinitys facial expressions to cause anticipation towards the audience because it I like an ellipses in framing/shot length form. The symbolic ellipses waits for her to strike, this causes slight tension to rise from the audience. There is also evidence of extreme long shots being displayed in the clip. It was of buildings, like a scene-setting, establishing the shot. It displayed the exterior of the building because it is used to show thrilling action which this movie is really about so it contributes towards fitting in the genre. There is hardly any detail in the shots of the near-distant buildings because it allows the audience to acknowledge the great height and profundity of the buildings which Trinity jumps from one to another. It is meant to give a general impression, in this case rather than specific information. The Camera Movement The director moves action by moving the camera with the action and uses zoom lenses to change the magnification if the scene; the director is able to get a close up shot while being a short/long distant away from Trinity when she is trying to escape from the agents. The zoom lenses seem to be drastically over-used by the directors to distort and alter the clip, thereby making the agents appear closer than they really are. This gives the impression of movement and exhilaration in a scene where it does not exist. Overall, the camera movements are both left and right, however fastspaced. Locations Used The locations used in the clip also creates both meanings and responses from the audience because it subsidises to the genre of thriller and action which typically consists of dark atmospheres (as greatly expressed in the Matrix clip) which gives out unnerving vibes towards the audience which keeps them cautioned and alerted. The locations also include an abandoned warehouse and buildings both high and narrow. The dramatic sound effects perceived are all elements of a thriller movie; however, the director seemed to deliberately avoid using horror conventions in his movie so the genre is clear since the Matrix is not of the horror genre. He did this by including numerous appealing visual backgrounds such as the beautiful night life scenery (with the lights and the buildings) during the course of the clip, This avoids minor misconceptions and doesnt question the genre.

The Soundtrack As briefly mentioned earlier, the soundtrack plays a great deal of meaning and importance along with emotional responses from the audience while watching the clip. The soundtrack begins quietly with a low pitch tone because slow, low sounds builds up tension which is compatible to the scene as the policemen search for the fierce Trinity. When the camera focuses on the action, there are frequent sound effects that come into play such as gun clicks, shooting bullets, and policemen in agony etc. The sound track automatically increases its volume, pitch and also speed in many of the cases during this cut, the reason for this is that it increases the dramatic effects of the scene and makes it seem more sensational and action-packed than really is. This is usually known by Empathetic sound, which is sound effects whose mood matches the mood of the action, just like on the clip. The dramatic sound effects such as the shooting bullets enhance the realism and excitement of the scene, which is part of the film-making. The Costumes The costumes used are also beneficial in the meaning and audience responses the costume designers design the costumes in a particular way depending on what kind of look they want to achieve; nevertheless, it must be based on the context (of movie) and personality of the characters portrayed. Trinity is dressed in a close-fitted, leather outfit which is described as Badass by some young people (target audience of the Matrix) and it also helps the audience grasp the way she fights because it can be seen clearly. The dark audience worn by Trinity is also an attempt to camouflage herself (from the agents) in the dark and shadowy locations. The costumes the agents dress in, are suitable for their superiority and power. The suites along with the sophisticated sunglasses look intelligent, yet it gives them a sense of authority and a brief judgement of their suspicious identity, in terms of appearance. The Actors The actors chosen for the roles provide meaning and importance due to the mass auditions cast out before the production of the movies for the best actors/actresses suited for the role. Trinity is played by Carrie-Anne-Moss, she is female and this is a significant factor in the scene because it destroys the stereotypical image of women being the weaker gender in terms of physical abilities which grabs the audiences attention and causes thrill. The agents were created to look identical as this adds a strange air to the clip. The Lightening The lightening alters and differs throughout each cut depending on the appropriate light intensity, position and duration. It commences with a pitch dark background, a circle of light is visible in the centre which extends itself making it look larger. The audience soon come to realisation that is is in fact the policemans torch (searching for Trinity and the lightening begins to adjust from there. The purpose of this is that is causes anticipation, the audience also become cautious and are deeply willing to see what happens next.

The lightening is very bright in the distance where the policemen are walking, this makes the audience feel like they are there, in that very moment, since the background is dark. Overall, not a lot of harsh bright lightening is used because the darkness suits the concept of the scene. -The End of 500 wordsNote: Hope this has been any use to you, and I hope you have learnt something from this, however small or big, all knowledge comprised into tiny pieces, make up an entire civilisation. Whether you choose to look at it this way or not, it is all ONE. Everythingits all connected, look up the quote.
