Convert VAC-charts from JeppView to PDF-files with bookmarks

The main goal of this document is to collect& translate and group all instructions in a common document. The initial reason to pro(ide these instructions was the lack of application from )eppesen for the *pple i+ad. )eppesen has released in the mean time an application $)eppT,%& which enables pilots to (iew the )epp-iew airport charts on their i+ad. .ut other applications like !*ir 'a(igation +ro" or !/ood0eader" can still make use of the +1 -files generated using the following instructions. This post describes a way to generate +1 -files with automatic .ookmarks for each airport from within )epp-iew.

The software tools described hereafter ha(e been designed for #icrosoft 2indows3. .ut they ha(e been successfully tested in a (irtual 2indows4-en(ironment using +arallels3 on #ac 5673.

Jeppview Jeppesen#
The )epp-iew-application pro(ides all airport charts included in the subscription. $8 0/- 0% )epp-iew should be installed& configured and acti(ated using the corresponding subscription from )eppesen.

This software can be downloaded at http://www.iteksoft.com. The actual price of 961 2:.$ eb;2011% is fair for the performance offered. The software should be installed and a new printer a(ailable. The printer referred to in this document is called !e1oc+rinter +1 +ro"& but this can be named differently.

Procedure
%elect charts
irst of all select the charts to be e<ported in one +1 -file. 8t is possible to select the charts manually or using the integrated filter function. =ou may also add the charts to routepacks& which may be sa(ed and reused in later on. >> +lease be aware that airport charts in e<isting routepacks are automatically updated& but will not include new additional charts >>

Print out
0ight-click on the selected charts and select !+rint". Then select the options according to the following screenshot:

+lease make sure that you checked the bo< !*irport 8nformation"& which is re?uired to generate the automatic bookmarks ,heck !)epp-iew ,harts for@"

Then click on &Print %etup'(

6elect the correct printer& eg. !e1oc+rinter +1 +ro" 6elect the page siBe *C 6elect 5rientation !+ortrait" ,lick on !+roperties"

%elect the &Pa)e( tab* which should look like this+

6elect 1C01+8 for the resolution& which is a good compromise between ?uality and file siBe.

Select the Bookmarks tab, which should look like this:

,heck !Jnable *utomatically 1etect and add .ookmarks" ,heck !5pen bookmarks within le(el" and select !1K *dd an entry in the Table of ,ontent and gi(e it a name& eg. !*irfield". 6elect the new entry to see the attributes on the right side. ,heck ! amily" and select the font !*rial" ,heck !6tyle" and select !.old 8talic" ,heck !6iBe" and select font siBe !20K with tolerance !1K ,heck !,olor" and select black 'ow you can sa(e the setting for later use& in case you need to use the automatic bookmark feature for another purpose.

,lick 2 times 5N to get back to the !+rinting" menu of )epp-iew ,lick on +rint

Depending on the PC-performance and how many charts youre printing at once, the procedure can take a few seconds up to several minutes.

The highest amount Ive een printing at once was !"" charts #$""" pages%, which took appro&. '" minutes. *fter this the application will prompt you to enter a file name for your +1 -file& then click !6a(e". $you could also check the bo< !-iew +1 or J<ecute +ost *ction *fter /eneration" if you;d like the application to automatically open the +1 -file after sa(e% ,pen the new )enerated PDF-file *s soon as you open the file in *dobe *crobat or any other +1 -tool& you should be able to see and na(igate through the generated bookmarks.

1. /reat informati(e post& howe(er one further ?uestion. 8s there a way to get further bookmarks created automatically& like the 0unways& 6T*06& 6816 or 8M6 pages etc& rather than Lust the 8,*5 bookmark. or e<ample& this would allow me to go straight to the 8M6 for 0wy 33 instead of ha(ing to scroll through multiple pages or printing each chart indi(idually. Met me know if you know a way to do this.

Pi. Thanks for your comment. 8;m only using - 0-charts& so 8 don;t know how it looks like for 8 0-charts. 8f you can distinguish the te<t (ia its format& it could be possible to do it. 8f you ha(e a sample +1 -file& 8 could ha(e a look. $send it to takeoffrunwayQatRgmail.com.

*ctually 8 figured it out. or )epp(iew user with 8 0 charts& under the .ookmark tab& section *ttributes& change color to 2P8TJ instead of .M*,N or else no bookmarks will be created.
