ACTIVITY 1

It is important to try to separate different plastics early in the recycling process. 1. Why is waste separated into different plastics always likely to be more valuable and more useful than waste which remains mixed? Because the plastics are cut into flakes and mixed with a liquid so that some float and some sink, or can be spun in centrifuges.

2. Why are dark plastics separated from clear plastics even though they are made from the same material? Because depend the dissolvent and identify the plastics.

3. Have a look at home at the plastics packaging materials in the kitchen or bathroom. Look for the code number stamped on the bottom or inside of a container. Make a table showing which plastics are used for which purposes. 1 2 6 Containers Bottles School material.

4. Make a careful note of where two different plastics are used in the same item e.g. for a lid and a container. Why are different types selected?

Pen and plastic box. Because the resistance must be different.

ACTIVITY 2
1. The density of polypropene is 0.91 g/cm3. The density of polystyrene is 1.05 g/cm3. What density would a liquid need to be to make sure that the polypropene floated and the polystyrene sank?

The density of a liquid must be less than 1.05 g/cm3 and more than 0.91 g/cm3, because the polypropene float and the polystyrene sank.

2. PET has a density of 1.35 g/cm3. What density would a liquid need to be if it was to separate PET from polystyrene?

The density of a liquid must be between 1.35 g/cm3 and 1.05 g/cm3.

3. Ease of separation of plastics materials is now being taken into account at the design stage. What recommendations about design rules would you make? Think about densities, colour, inks and lebels.

We should analyze the different properties of plastic like densities, colors, inks and labels because depending in it you can use it to different designs because for example in the case of materials made of polyethylene has a lower density than other materials, so, you cant use it in the manufacture of waterproof objects.

4. Recycling makes a lot of sense, but only if demand for recycled materials matches the supply. If demand is much less than the supply, what will happen to

The price paid for the recycled materials. The price paid for the recycled materials will increase depending on the quantity of recycled materials. The amount of recycled material in storage.

Depend on the factories, products and population, so, in can increase or decrease because the population uses different stones The cost of the process. Will be more expensive but often that you can obtain good results for a long time if you invent before. The profitability of the process? Yes, maybe if the process of recycling is rentable because if you invent more money than you retire.

5. If there is a large difference between supply and demand, the amount of wasted being collected will have to be reduced. What effect might this have on public opinion and on the wisdom of recycling?

This will be a negative effect in the population because they wont support the recycling of plastics because they dont fell the results of the recycling because its not or you dont obtain profitability.

ACTIVITY 3.
1. Summarize these processes in a flow diagram. Make sure that you distinguish between the different stages, and between the usefulness of the four end-products.
Feedstock recylcling Energy recycling Degradability Landfill

2. What other factors do we need to take into account before we can know whether processes such as these are actually of benefit? Think of the costs involved.

The factors are: Use cheap materials that are easy to recycling. Ensure maximum recovery. Packages useful life. Use a cheap recycling process.
