Film Questionnaire Evaluation

My sample was 20 people. I believe this is a great sample because my results will be more accurate and thus I can generalise to the population. Moreover I have questions which are bot qualitative and quantitative as stats may not always tell the truth so peoples opinions are vital.

1)

50% of my sample is males which is 10 of the 20 participants thus meaning that 10 people are female. I believe that having an equal sample will make my results more reliable in terms of generalising them to all genders. Despite this, my research on audience profiling suggests that my movie will be more male dominated and thus it would probably have been more worthwhile to have more of a male dominated sample and so the fact that the gender is equal may reduce the relevance of our findings in later questions. Having qualitative data though, helps increase the relevance of this questionnaire as I will take peoples view into account. Furthermore, I must take into account that all of the research I have acquired prior to this questionnaire is secondary information so it will be interesting to see whether my results supports my assumptions made through my secondary research.

2)

What I have devised from this is that my sample age is quite mixed. One reason this was a good question is because I found that my participants were of a wide age range and as I have noticed through my audience profiling is that the ages that watch the sort of film that we will Nadib Islam

be producing is quite mixed and so this shows that each of the responses that we gain from our sample are as imperative as another to see whether my film idea is a good one and would be liked by this wide target age. As audience profiling is very limited and unreliable as its a form of secondary research, asking questions like these will re-enforce the validity of my findings.

3)

My third question consisted of the participants selecting two of their favourite genres out of a selection. What I have noted from this is that there will be interest for a movie of our genre. This is shown as 60% of our participants which is 12 people said that Drama was one of their favourite genres and the sports genre had a 40% interest. This is particularly surprising for our group as we predicted a lower interest for a boxing genre due to the scarcity of boxing movies in Hollywood and the UK film industry. Action was the majoritys favourite genre whereas thriller was the least. I feel this is because there is a lot controversy on what really is a thriller movie and it can be seen as a sub-genre.

Do you like going to the Cinema?

No

4)

Question number four was quite a simple one but still offered my group and me a lot of information regarding demand for films. Knowing that 85% of the participants enjoy going to the cinema. This ultimately tells me that there is currently a high demand for movies; especially a sports/ drama based movie which means that if we were going with this questionnaire, our movie should be a success.

My qualitative data started from this point and so I will quickly summarise what was said by the participants and evaluate it.

1) What sort of elements do you expect to see in a boxing movie? We put this question in to see how much our participants knew about movies and we also worded it in a way to indirectly challenge them. Surprisingly we got some good responses from the majority of the sample. What most of the sample said was that they expect to see highlights of a fight and it must be very fast paced. We intend on including both of those aspects in our trailer as we are going to start our trailer off with a fight and end it with a fight as well. Furthermore we have done enough soundtrack research and produced a piece which will really complement a fast paced trailer. 2) How often do you watch sports/drama films? Looking back at this question, I felt as if we should have offered it in a quantitative format as it would lead to a better evaluation. Furthermore, a multiple choice format offers a much more precise idea of how we want the question answered. Almost all people said that they tend to watch drama films very often but watch sports films rarely due to the lack of production of sports movies in the modern era. 3) This question basically asked the audience what was the most recent boxing film they have watched. All of the audience said Rocky. I feel that they had said this because rocky is ultimately a monopolistic film in the Boxing sub-genre and so I feel that other film production companies have purposely avoided entering this boxing genre due to Rockys dominance. This also tells me that I must go back and watch the Rocky movies and study them in order to see what made them such a success.

One aspect that I felt we had done really well is that we had a wide range of quantitative and qualitative data which gave us a wide range of responses. This was especially good because it affected the relevance of our questionnaire as it helped us accomplish almost everything we wanted to find out from our questionnaire. One thing I felt that could have been done a bit better was making the purpose of the question clearer in our heads. We had included three other qualitative questions which I felt there was no need to analyse as we were receiving similar responses in our other questions. This ultimately meant that it was a bit of a waste of time for us but also our participants as well. The reason for these additional questions is because we wanted to be sure that we wanted to get the information we information we looked for in our questionnaire and thus were too over-cautious. Another thing that I have felt we had done well was acquiring a large sample size considering that this is a media project. This would make our results more accurate and make this questionnaire one of the most relevant aspect of our entire planning section of this media project.

Film Questionnaire Evaluation

Overall this questionnaire has helped me a lot as it tells me that there will be a genuine interest in our movie but also it makes me feel that there is a gap in the market for a movie such as ours and thus we have our unique selling point right there. Despite this, we know that there is a high level of risk as we really dont have a movie apart from Rocky where the first film in the series was produced for a different generation. This ultimately tells us that we must ensure that we do everything in our power to reduce this risk. The questionnaire has told me that filming a boxing fight is a definite way of reducing the risk of failure for our trailer.
