WHY TEACH FOR INDIA?

The Present Picture: 4% - of Indian children never go to school.

42% - drop out before they finish primary school. 90% - drop out before entering university.
The achievement gap between the privileged and under-privileged schools is aplenty. This is because of the lack of quality teachers and efficient teaching methods. Thus, the child loses interest and is not able to reach his/her true potential. And the day that all children reach their potential, is the day that India reaches her mark, a step near towards its vision to development.

HOW DOES THE TEACH FOR INDIA MOVEMENT OPERATE?

The Fellowship: Teach For India recruits Indias most promising college graduates and high performing professionals to serve as full-time teachers in low-income schools for two years. Fellows work tirelessly to bridge the immense gaps their children face, putting their students on a fundamentally different life path. Teach For India staff provides training and support to Fellows so that they can employ innovative teaching strategies to maximize their effectiveness in the classroom.

In the second year of the Fellowship, the Fellows undertake Be the Change project which creates impact beyond the classroom to the school or community towards tackling a challenge which hinders the achievement of their students.

The Alumni Movement: Teach For India Alumni are a powerful and growing leadership force. Informed by their experiences and insights, the alumni movement works from inside and outside the educational system to effect the fundamental, long-term changes necessary to ultimately realize educational opportunity for all. Teach For India Alumni stay connected to each other and to Teach For India, working towards eliminating inequity across every part of India.

Teach For Indias Teaching As Leadership (TAL) model is based on the belief that excellent teachers employ the same skills as excellent leaders in any field. The TAL model requires teachers to plan purposefully, execute, effectively, work relentlessly and reflect continuously in order to push students to significant academic gains. Through the TAL model, Fellows become leaders who can make significant academic gains in the short run and advocate educational reform in the long run.
