The Sun in the Complete Horoscope

The Description of Your Natural State in Classical Astrology

The fundamental force of life and spirit, behaving according to its position, dominating in each moment of stillness. The sun is the most important heavenly body for our existence on Earth, and by far the biggest in our solar system. Also in astrology its importance vastly surpasses that of the other heavenly bodies. When we talk about our Zodiac sign or star sign, we actually refer to the position of the sun at the moment of birth. Those who are Aries have the sun in Aries in their horoscope, and so on. From our geocentric perspective, the sun moves around the whole Zodiac in a year, spending one month in each sign. The dates for each sign differ slightly from year to year, depending on our system of leap years. Below are the normal dates for the sun in each sign, but each change from one sign to the next can differ a day. In rare cases, depending on your exact time of birth, it can differ two days. So, if you are born around the date of change from one sign to another, make sure to check your exact horoscope (see the instructions here). The sun sign dates: Aries March 21 - April 19

Taurus April 20 - May 20 Gemini May 21 - June 20 Cancer June 21 - July 22 Leo July 23 - August 22 Virgo August 23 - September 22 Libra September 23 - October 22 Scorpio October 23 - November 21 Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Capricorn December 22 - January 19 Aquarius January 20 - February 19 Pisces February 20 - March 20

The Sun and its traits. Woodcut by Hans Sebald Beham, from the 1530's.

Your basic state of mind

The sun rules over your basic personality, the way you are before you engage in something that awakes another planetary force. The horoscope is a dynamic thing. The planets are forces, energies, with their particular traits and modes of expression. But the sun is neutral in itself, so it becomes its position in each horoscope - for example the Zodiac sign it's in, but it is also influenced by any aspects to other planets. Normally, it is when we relax and involve in nothing particular that we express our sun position the most.

Zodiac Sign Traits of Your Father

The sun in the horoscope also shows a lot about your relation to your father, or the father figure in your family. The moon shows your relation to your mother, and any aspects between the two in your horoscope shows their relation to one another, at least as it comes across to you. Men tend to identify with their father, at least as adults. Women often do the same with their mothers. It is also quite common that men find wives that are somewhat similar to their mothers, as shown by the moon in their horoscopes. Again, women tend to do the same with their husbands: they are attracted to men with some links to the sun of their horoscope. It's not certain, though, and it depends quite a lot on the horoscope as a whole. Other factors can alter it.

Helios, the Greek sun god.

Planet age
Each of the heavenly bodies represents a period in your life of about seven years. In the case of the moon it is early adulthood, from about 21 to 28 years of age. The position of the sun in your horoscope reveals what that period of your life is like, generally speaking. The twenties is the period in life where we start to bloom as adult individuals, showing who we really are. That's to a large extent the character that the sun in our horoscope shows.

Mercury in the Complete Horoscope

The Source to Language and Understanding in Classical Astrology

The immediate intellect and comprehension, adapting language spoken and written, the urge to express and to perceive. Merrcury is the fastest moving planet in the solar system, but in the geocentric perspective used in astrology it never moves farther than 28 from the sun. Therefore, it still takes about a year to travel through the whole Zodiac. In the horoscope, Mercury represents the everyday intellect by which we communicate, make ourselves understood and understand others. Of course, language is a great part of it, but also conscious thought in general.

There are two planets representing the mind: Mercury handles normal thought, and Uranus is involved in profound speculation. The former is what is at work in us daily, one could say superficially, and we are quite aware of it. The latter is a process that will make us mature toward insight, in due time.

The Power of Love in Classical Astrology

Mercury (Hermes), the messenger god. Statue by Giovanni da Bologna, 1580.

The pleasurously creative ability seeking joy and delight, finding soft solutions, gentle turns. Venus is the second planet from the sun. Since it moves inside of Earth's orbit, we see it as following the sun around the Zodiac - never more than 48 from it. In the horoscope Venus represents pleasure, desire, and therefore also your erotic taste and actions. It is also the planet of creativity, showing in what field and to what extent you are talented. It is a beneficial planet, often doing good and very rarely causing problems. When too stimulated or enforced, it can make you overindulge in something - but you probably would not complain about it.

It is not really weakened in any Zodiac sign, because of its own beneficial capacity, but it might be sligthly less suited for Aries and Sagittarius, maybe also for Pisces.

The Force of Aggression in Classical Astrology

The fiery, impatient force, building or tearing down, challenging for challenge's sake. Mars, the red planet, is a symbol of war in many cultures. In astrology it stands for aggression and personal power. It is a force of destruction, but also construction - the ability to get things done.

Jupiter in the Complete Horoscope

The Resource of Luck and Opportunity in Classical Astrology

The expanding, enriching possibility of luck and opportunity, which adds to life and widens it. Jupiter, the biggest planet in the solar system, stands for expansion and good fortune in astrology. It may seem odd that luck should be a fixed capacity within the human being, but our experience tells us that this indeed seems to be the case. Some of us are lucky, and some not. Also, we can be fortunate in some aspects of our lives, and much less in others. This is what Jupiter reveals in the horoscope. The basic trait of the planet is expansion: in what fields of life we experience a multitude, and get enriched. Jupiter shows what our lives will mainly be about.

Chinese years
In Chinese astrology, each year is given one of their twelve Zodiac signs. This is decided by Jupiter, which takes about a year to traverse a sign. Saturn in the Complete Horoscope

The Indicator of Somber Duty in Classical Astrology

The demanding duty towards past and present, honor, its toll and limits, what tradition insists upon. Saturn is the outermost planet that can be seen with the naked eye, so it has been known and studied for ages. In astrology, it stands for sinister things: tradition, the merciless intervention of fate, the unavoidable and the decisive. The god that it got its name from was a cruel creature, indeed. Saturn castrated his father and ate his children. The planet's astrological traits are not that terrible, but the planet is regarded with some awe in the horoscope. Mainly, it stands for duty and tradition - what is passed on from generation to generation, just because that's how it has to be. Saturn takes almost 30 years to complete its orbit around the sun, and to traverse the twelve signs of the Zodiac. So, it stays for about 2,5 years in each sign. Therefore, people born in the same year pretty much share the same Saturn position, which means that they share moral values and have a similar sense of duty. Of course, other ingredients in their horoscopes vary, so they can still express their Saturn quite differently.

Saturn in the Zodiac

Here are short descriptions of how each Zodiac sign influences Saturn, your basic values and sense of duty, when that's where it is in your natal chart. Aries brings a demanding attitude and intolerance. Taurus brings conservatism and fixed values. Gemini brings some confusion as to what are lasting values, and a keen capacity to negotiate. Cancer brings a love for the ways of the past and for the bloodline, also some angst. Leo brings a sense of importance, and determination to reach one's goals. Virgo brings a strong conviction of the necessity to strive for perfection. Libra brings a very firm and usually conservative moral, and unwillingness to tolerate any deviation from it. Scorpio brings strange morals, or none, and many complications. Sagittarius brings a loyalty towards the future, and not towards the past. Capricorn brings a grim and focused mind, set on duty and on doing what must be done. Aquarius brings serenity and a tendency to take everything very seriously. Pisces brings confusion about values and duty, and some angst because of it.

Keywords
Here are the twelve Zodiac signs, and keywords for the character they give to Saturn, i.e. your basic values and sense of duty. Some of these words are quite strong, but they should be uderstood as indications only: Aries provocative Taurus conservative Gemini reasonable Cancer protective Leo egoistic

Virgo critical Libra fanatic Scorpio threatening Sagittarius revolutionary Capricorn authoritarian Aquarius traditional Pisces alienated

Saturn and its traits. Woodcut by Hans Sebald Beham, from the 1530's.

Ruler
Saturn rules over Capricorn, the sign of ambition, which means that it tends to be the most obvious and enforced in this sign. It might be said to exalt in Aquarius, the sign of somber contemplation. It fits the best in cardinal and fixed signs, and prefers the elements earth and air over fire and water. In fire signs, it can become dreadful. It is likely to be frustrated in Pisces, which can lead to severe complications.

Planet age
Each of the heavenly bodies represents a period in your life of about seven years. In the case of Saturn it is the period of adult life where we have reached the height of our careers, and enjoy the respect of others. A time of authority and settlement. That's approximately when we're 42 to 49 years old, but it can last another ten years or so - because we normally live much longer than our ancestors.

Uranus in the Complete Horoscope

The Source to Insight in Classical Astrology

The strife and ability to see through, capture the essence and comprehend it, a learning leading to insight. Uranus is the closest of the planets that can not be seen with the naked eye. It was not discovered until 1781, so its role in astrology is rather recent, compared to the closer planets that have been observed for ages. In the horoscope, Uranus represents the higher intellect, like sort of a bigger sibling to Mercury. A good word for it is insight. Profound thought, things that take a lifetime to learn fully. Whereas Mercury deals with the everyday conscious intellect of communication and such, Uranus is the analytical process going on inside our minds, making us come to an understanding of life as a whole. The bystanding observer we all have somewhere in our minds. What we learn from our lives.

Uranus in the Zodiac

Here are short descriptions of how each Zodiac sign influences Uranus, your insight and revelations, when that's where it is in your natal chart. Aries brings an improvising mind, with difficulty to concentrate for long.

Taurus brings an inward mind and an interest reserved for what's palpable. Gemini brings a mind that is quick to understand even complicated matters, but not that interested in developing them. Cancer brings a capacity to see through others, to understand motivation and things implied. Leo brings a fascination with one's own mind, and constant curiosity to explore it. Virgo brings a mind set on detail and on what makes things work. Libra brings a profound capacity for logical thinking, and readiness to revise one's ethics. Scorpio brings an understanding of the incomprehensible, and an interest in anything mysterious. Sagittarius brings a visionary mind and thoughts that wander very far. Capricorn brings a competence to analyze complex situations and reach wise decisions. Aquarius brings a mind capable of great feats and insights that few are able to reach. Pisces brings bewilderment about the world and everything in it.

It fits the best in air signs, which stand for thought. It is less stimulated in water signs, but there is really no sign where it gets restrained - with the possible exception of Aries.

Planet age
Each of the heavenly bodies represents a period in your life of about seven years. In the case of Uranus it is the period before retirement, when we are the wisest and know our ways as well as can be achieved. That would be approximately from your late 50's to your early 60's. What you have learned from your life so far. It is time to find that out, and to contemplate it.

Neptune in the Complete Horoscope

The Source to Fantasy and Dreams in Classical Astrology

The dreamer with far-reaching fantasy, imagination unfettered by reality, to perceive also what is not there. Neptune is one of the outer planets, invisible to the naked eye. It was not discovered until 1846. It is quite slow, taking 165 years to orbit the sun and complete the Zodiac. That means it stays approximately 14 years in each sign, so a whole generation shares almost the same Neptune position in their horoscope. In astrology, Neptune represents fantasy, dreams, and imagination. It is the planet of the unreal, which still affects us to a large extent. Our subconscious and our fantasies are quite real inside of us. Also, such things tend to influence our choices and actions greatly. Because of its dreamlike nature, Neptune is the only planet that blooms in the 12th House, which is the House of what is not lived out, what we have to sacrifice in order for the rest of our characteristics and talents to manifest themselves. What is not acted out is kept inside, and that's the natural realm of Neptune.

Here are short descriptions of how each Zodiac sign influences Neptune, your fantasy and dreams, when that's where it is in your natal chart.

Libra brings a fantasy that deals with the abstract, and dreams that focus on good and bad. Scorpio brings a weird imagination, and a rich fantasy favoring the unthinkable. Sagittarius brings glimpses of a distant future and of far-away places, and dreams escaping interpretation. Capricorn brings dreams and visions of a concrete nature, many of them possible and rewarding to realize. Aquarius brings contemplations to get lost in, and transcending meditation, not to mention fascinating dreams. Pisces brings blossoming fantasy and imagination.

Pluto in the Complete Horoscope

The Power of Metamorphosis in Classical Astrology

The metamorphosis of circumstance, drastic change out of nowhere, leaving nothing as it used to be. Pluto is no longer called a planet, but that makes no difference to astrology and how it is interpreted in the horoscope. This small heavenly body is the farthest from the sun, and the slowest to orbit it. Pluto takes 248 years to pass through the whole Zodiac - a quarter of a millennium. Because of its elliptic orbit, Pluto stays between 11 years (in Scorpio) and 32 years (in Taurus) in each Zodiac sign.

Pluto's speed through the Zodiac signs.

Its slow progress makes its position in the Zodiac shared by a whole generation. Still, other ingredients in the horoscope can make its effect differ considerably from one person to the next. Pluto is quite invisible to the naked eye. It was not discovered until 1930, so we still haven't experienced more than its passing through half of the Zodiac. In 1930 it was in Cancer, and in 2008 it entered Capricorn. In the horoscope, Pluto represents drastic change, the metamorphosis from one situation into something utterly different. Its positon in the horoscope shows how and where such events take place for the person in question. In spite of its miniscule size, Pluto is regarded as sort of a big brother to Mars. Where the latter causes sudden dramatic events that don't last long, Pluto causes great changes that can last forever.

Pluto in the Zodiac

Here are short descriptions of how each Zodiac sign influences Pluto, your most important and dramatic changes in life, when that's where it is in your natal chart. Aries brings sudden and drastic changes, rarely foreseen.

Taurus brings long-foreseeable concrete changes that last. Gemini brings a lightness to great events in life, as if they are mere spectacles. Cancer brings upsetting surprises and events that stir up emotions. Leo brings drastic changes and a sense of destiny in the making, to one's personal life. Virgo brings concrete and predictable changes, more often small than big ones. Libra brings radical changes on theoretical levels, and renewed ethics. Scorpio brings a sense of doom, but little evident change, and still a kind of metamorphosis. Sagittarius brings premonition of radical future change, and a force to head for it. Capricorn brings ability to handle crisis and to excel where others fail. Aquarius brings revelations of the mind and the way to look at the world. Pisces brings chaotic circumstances and difficulty to foresee anything.

There is really no Zodiac sign where Pluto is weakened, except maybe Aquarius and to a lesser extent Virgo. Also, its effects tend to be less evident in air signs.

Planet age
Each of the heavenly bodies represents a period in your life of about seven years. In the case of Pluto it is really the transition from life to death, or the very last phase of life, at whatever time that happens. A change having only one equal in significance: that of birth, which can also be described as an Plutonian event.

Ascendant in the Complete Horoscope

The Key to Appearance in Classical Astrology

The appearance of a personality, true for the first moment of encounter, as one wants oneself to be seen. The Ascendant (AC) is also called the Rising sign. It's the point on the Zodiac that is exactly at the east horizon in the horoscope. Its counterpart is the Descendant, at the west horizon. So, the Ascendant is not a heavenly body at all, but in astrology its function and meaning is quite comparable to the planets. It moves much faster, though. It passes through the whole Zodiac in 24 hours. Therefore it is important to know the exact birth time, in order to establish the correct position for the Ascendant. In the horoscope the Ascendant shows how you want to present yourself to others, the impression of yourself that you consciously strive to project. So, it is the first impression others get of you. The Ascendant is the cusp of the 1st House, i.e. its starting point. Whereas the Ascendant is the image of yourself that you project, the rest of the 1st House shows how others perceive you as they get to know you. But the Ascendant is the role you play, and the way you prefer others to perceive you.

The Ascendant (AC) in the Zodiac

Here are short descriptions of how each Zodiac sign influences the Ascendant, the first impression of yourself that you intentionally give others, when that's where it is in your natal chart. Aries brings some rudeness, and obvious impatience. Taurus brings neutral behavior towards others, and an everyday appearance. Gemini brings eloquence and a sense of humor appreciated by all, although regarded as superficial. Cancer brings a pleasant way of behaving, with no fear of intimacy. Leo brings an impressive appearance and the admiration of others. Virgo brings a critical and demanding attitude, that might put others off. Libra brings a diplomatic appearance, keen on not being misunderstood. Scorpio brings a secretive, intriguing attitude. Sagittarius brings an unattached appearance that many find fascinating. Medium Coeli in the Complete Horoscope

The Description of How You See Yourself in Classical Astrology

The understanding of oneself, how one perceives and regards oneself, independently of what others might surmise. Medium Coeli (MC) is also called the Midpoint, because it is the Zenit of the Zodiac in the horoscope. Its counterpart is Imum Coeli (IC) the lowest point on the3 Zodiac, below the horizon. Medium Coeli is not a heavenly body at all, but treated much the same in astrology. It moves much faster than any of the planets: the full circle of the Zodiac in 24 hours, just like the Ascendant. Therefore it is necessary to know the exact time of birth, in order to establish the correct MC. Because the Ascendant is the eat horizon, and MC is Midheaven, the normal distance between them is 90. But it can differ, because of celestial and heavenly angles. Still, MC is never below the horizon, and positions close to 90 from the Ascendant are the most common ones in horoscopes. In the horoscope, Medium Coeli represents one's image of oneself, how you perceive your own personality. That might be close to how you really are, but that's not at all necessarily so. We all risk fostering completely delusional images of ourselves - to some extent it's what we like to do: regard ourselves as fancier than others are likely to describe us. We also tend to present ourselves to others (through the Acendant) in a way that we ourselves regard as far from the truth. That's shown by the normal right angle between the two points of the horoscope. It is typical for the human character not to trust that what we believe ourselves to really be is enough to impress others. So, we play roles. Anyway, what we believe ourselves to really be is exactly what Medium Coeli presents in the horoscope.

Aspects to MC
The aspects (special angles) that the MC has to planets in the horoscope show to what extent we agree or are aware at all of other sides of our personality. So, an opposition to a planet shows that we refuse to recognize or accept that side of our character, whereas a conjunction means that we are completely convinced about the existence and importance of that side to us. A trine or sextile means a positive attitude to the character in question, but a square means struggle with it. If there is no aspect at all between the MC and a planet, it means that you're not aware of this side of yourself at all.

House
In some House systems, MC is always the cusp (starting point) of the 10th House. But in other systems, such as Equal House, it can be in anyone of the 7th to 12th House. The deviation from the cusp of the 10th House depends very much on the latitude of the place on which the horoscope is based - the farther from the equator, the farther from that point MC can be. Most common, though, is a position in the 9th or 10th House.
