How the SAT test is scored?

Each of the three sections (writing, reading, and math) are graded separately. For reading and math: you start at zero. You get 1 point for every question you answer right, 0 points for each one you leave blank, and -1/4 for every one you get wrong. Then these numbers are added to get the raw score. A chart that consists of raw scores on a side and a scale from 200-800 on the other is used to find the grade. In addition, for the mathematics grid in section, examiners get the 1 point score for each correct answer and they are not penalized for the incorrect answer. For writing: it's a little more involved. They do the same raw-score thing for the multiple choice, and give you a sub

score from 20-80. But then they also grade your essay, from 2-12. They have a huge chart with all the possible multiplechoice scores going down the side and all the essay scores going across the top, and at the intersection of your two raw scores they'd find your 200-800 scaled score. Both of these "charts" are unique to each administration of the test, and calculated precisely to make sure the SAT is always graded the same way (so if you get a hard test, the chart will have a higher curve).
