CHICKEN INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE REPORT

EXPLANATORY NOTES
This semi-annual Industry Performance Report on chicken
presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by type of chicken
and age classification; volume of production; and monthly average
prices at farmgate, wholesale and retail levels.
This is the first issue of the semi-annual Industry Performance
Report. The Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) intends to release
this report every 15th of September to cover January to June data of
the current year.
The Livestock and Poultry data system of the Bureau of
Agricultural Statistics (BAS) is supported by two (2) major surveys
namely:
1) The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) covers
one (1) replicate sample of the Palay and Corn Production
Survey (PCPS) consisting of 9,700 sample households in 673
sample barangays nationwide; and,
2) The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS)
covering about 579 sample layer farms and 857 broiler
commercial farms and contract growers. Commercial poultry
farms are those farms with a population of at least 1,000
broilers, 500 layers or a combination of 100 broilers and 100
layers.
Both surveys for chicken are simultaneously conducted every
quarter in all provinces.
Another survey is the Survey of Abattoirs and Dressing Plants
(SADP) which covers around 105 accredited dressing plants and
Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRME) nationwide and is
undertaken in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Service
(NMIS).

At current prices, gross value of

chicken production in the first half of
2011 declined by 1.38 percent.
This was due to the decrease in
farm prices during the period.
However, gross value of chicken
egg output grew by 6.21 percent in
comparison with last years level. At
constant prices, chicken and chicken
egg production contributed around
12.01 percent to the gross output of
agriculture in the 1st half of 2011.

Volume of Chicken Production

For the 1st half of

2011, total volume of chicken production was estimated at

635.36 thousand metric tons. This was 3.80 percent higher than last years output
of 660.30 thousand metric tons. Production in the 1st and 2nd quarters posted
output gains of 3.72 percent and 3.83 percent, respectively.

Broilers accounted for around 70.0 percent of the total chicken production. The

total chicken production consisted of broiler meat, meat of native and improved
breed of village chicken, meat of culled layers and, meat of culled breeders (GP
and PS) and meat of culled game fowls.
Volume of Chicken Egg Production
Total egg production from January to June 2011 reached 200,218 metric tons. This
registered an increase of 3.40 percent from last years level of 193,629 metric tons.
This growth was attributed to the increasing layer inventory from commercial farms,
particularly, in top egg producing regions.
